Ok ive looked and looked for this but never found a clear answer. So here I go...
Hey guys I've been reading a lot about rooting, the pros and cons, well I've made my decision and I want to root it.
My number one reason for rooting is I want to delete unnecessary apps on the phone and I want to use DroidWall (Firewall) so my apps don't use up my data plan (this is costing me a lot when I enable 3G), and I want to use Titanium Backup to backup all my data. I don't want to use custom roms or anything like that, well at least not now, cause I dont feel confident yet.
Back to my question, If I root my Gio can I Hard Reset my phone from system recovery?? Or what is the equivalent of hard reseting on a rooted phone?? , Im afraid because this one time my Gio wouldn't go past the boot screen and I had to Hard reset from recovery menu, and since then it works just fine, but If I ever need to do this again, I want to be sure I can use Hard Reset like I did before.
I ask this because I googled this question and I got results that said "don't factory reset if you are rooted", "Never factory reset when rooted on (x phone)" but then I see many threads here that say "factory reset before and after (x process)" So im a little confused.
Thanks in advance
by the way Im on android Froyo 2.2.1 don't know if it matters
and my phone is unlocked and don't want to loose that if I ever need to flash it

Factory reset is recommended both before and after flashing a new ROM. Doing it before flashing is very important because you can have bootloops and other problems otherwise.
I have personally done factory reset numerous times on my rooted gio and never faced any problem.
I see... By the way if I remove an unwanted app for example "Samsung Apps" will it be there again once I do a factory reset (or hard reset from recovery menu)??? Or will that app be gone forever? And also is a factory reset the same as hard reset (when you reset with the recovery menu)?? Sorry for so many questions but im new to all of this and dont want to mess up my phone.
By the way I wanted to share with you guys that I just upgraded my phone from Froyo 2.2.1 to Gingerbread 2.3.4 with Kies and it is much faster then before. I was afraid cause ive read many posts where other people were not happy once they upgraded. Now I can only imagine how fast it can go if I install custom roms in it.
It will be gone forever but samsung apps is good sometimes

Factory reset = hard reset.
Yeah, people not much happy because of gingerbread lag. I used official 2.3.3 after froyo and it lagged the less out of all gingerbreads I tried after that. Then I switched to custom roms.
I hope your experience with official gingerbread remains good throughout because lags can get very annoying at times.

I was starting to get that idea since no one used both terms. Well thanks for your reply's I really appreciate your help. I will now root my phone and hope for the best, ill stay official until I get problems with lag.
UPDATE:
I rooted mi Galaxy Gio and have successfully done a factory Reset while rooted. So for any other person wondering the same as me, It is ok...

Hello all, another noob, been lurking and reading for a while, getting ready to root my 14 month old EVO...have researched this question, but haven't found any solid answer as yet. I have all my apps, etc backed up, and was wondering if it really matters if I do a factory or a hard reset before getting my s-off? I thought maybe it would be best beings the phone has been in use now for a while, and don't want to run into any glitches during the root process....if I even will? any suggestions appreciated! Thanks in advance!
It is safe, but not necessary if you are going to use Revolutionary or unrevoked (for Froyo not Gingerbread). Just make sure you don't have HTC sync installed on your computer.

That depends, are you going to keep the stock rom or flash a new one? If you are going to keep the stock rom, it can't hurt to do a factory reset first to clear up any glitches that may have happened. If you are going to flash a new rom, then it doesnt matter, as flashing the new rom will wipe everything.
Thanks, being a virgin at this, I'll probably keep the stock rom for a while, I just want to get rid of the bloat, and play around with it for a while...apppreciate your answers, great site, our IT guys at work are going to wonder why I'm spending so much time here!
I have looked around and am still not sure which way would be best to un-root my Evo 4g. Can I just use ( wipe data/factory reset ) then update my contacts thru asurion ? and reload the apps i want from the market ? right now i am in ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.05 ( it was originally rooted with unrevoked ) not unrevoked forever. I thought i would like to try the latest official build for a while. ( not looking forward to the sprint bloatware ) or would the easiest thing be to try and update to the latest ClockworkMod or some other build. Thanks for any info you might have.
Best way to unroot is to grab the unrevoked s-on tool. Flash that and run a ruu or grab a stock non rooted rom.

so i guess wipe data is really no good ?

Not really sure what you are asking here. A factory reset will NOT unroot you, it will just reset whatever rom you are on. And updating contacts through Asurion? Asurion is your insurance provider, they have nothing to do with contacts....
I thought i would like to try the latest official build for a while.

You don't have to unroot to do this, just flash a rooted stock rom. This way you stay rooted. If you unroot, and then update to the latest stock rom, it will be VERY difficult to re-root.

I think you need to read a LOT more about rooting before you proceed to do any more, you don't really seem to know what's going on. ClockworkMod is your recovery, which has nothing to do with your rom. Updating Clockwork will not update your rom, or unroot you.
LOL I guess you are right. A LOT more reading in my future.. Thanks though.
I guess I will go ahead with the idea to update to the newest rom. I thought because ClockworkMod gave me the option to " wipe data/factory reset. " it would set it to factory default, which I thought might be un-rooted.
Side note: Asurion also syncs my phone contacts. I had to use it once when my phone was lost. to update / sync the new phone. It worked very well. Google sync stopped working long ago. I get an error message every time.
But thanks again. that post was very helpful to point me in the right direction. and make me feel a little foolish LOL BE WELL

did you try setting up a new gmail account? or maybe jsut delete it on your phone and re-set it up.
not yet. but i will soon. ill let you know how it goes. I've read that it works for some and not for others. haven't found a lot of info directly from Google though. it seems they don't acknowledge the issue. but I am sure i'm not the only one experiencing the error message.
If you really like the new sprint os but hate the bloatware, why not use a rooted sprint rom that one of the devs has made, kind of exactly what sprint/htc gives you but minus the bloat!
Thanks I will. i'm very new to this, how do i go about getting the correct one ? as you can see from above. I have Alot more reading to do.
just did a search on the rom you are running. How do you like that one.
The Rom I am running is great! Just can't post the link to it in this forum due to forum rules. But the Rom I am running is similar to a stock rom, just not a stock rom of an evo 4g. It's ics os which stands for (ice cream sandwich) the new HTC os. Its the stock upgrade for most of their new phones such as the Samsung Galaxy SII. Evo 4g was left out, but due to the devs on this site and others the evo 4g will be just fine!
Edit: Well there is alot of reading and research involved. But for me the best kind of research is trial and error. I read up on certain roms that interest me that have key perks. Such as ICS (newer roms), or wimax enabled (4g enabled and typically on the older roms). Then I read up on peoples response to the roms, what issues they have had, how they have fixed them, how the developer has fixed them. And then after that I'll flash the roms and see how they run. Usually a day or two of use can tell you if you like it or not. Its like a car test drive!
That's Great. I will look around a little more. and get a new rom, I'll probably try the one you mentioned, ( found the link ) Hey, I really appreciate the info, I just need the time to screw around a little more. LOL. Be Well. I'll let ya know how it goes. It is pretty interesting.
Yes on the site you are currently on, there should be a few helpful tips on how to flash the roms and kernels properly. Good luck, also a bunch of great tips on the CM7 Wiki
Just got this phone and I love it but the seller on ebay had it rooted and had one of the roms from here on it. They said they would put it all back to stock for me. I like to start with a clean slate if you know what I mean. Well, it is back on gingerbread but root is still there and a whole bunch of other stuff (apps, roms, titanium backup) etc etc in folders on the internal storage. My question is can I safely get this phone back to being stock just like it was from the factory, without the risk of bricking it? I know how to use Odin for the Epic 4G and all. I knew there were some problems with the touch and some phones getting bricked. I have no clue what they may have done to the phone so I am a bit concerned to do anything to it till I hear from someone who has done this (gone completely back to stock) Also, is there a tutorial somewhere?? Thanks guys for your help with this.
Oh here is some more info if it helps looks like I am on Android version 2.3.6, EL29, kernel 2.6.35.7 there is some other info if you need it please let me know I do see a Caulklin's folder in there in the internal storage so most likely they did have that rom on there at one time. There is also a ACS folder in there but when I try to open any of the folders in there I get an error that there is no program that can perform this action. Grrrrrr
Hi.
When messing with Gingerbread, especially stock, bricks are pretty hard to come by nowadays.
Here is what I suggest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
(from what you said, you probably understand this already)
Just run the EL29 OC. You'll be good to go.
In terms of the internal storage, just delete it all or run a format. You won't get yourself in trouble that way, it's just the internal storage.
If you're concerned about the data wipe brick, that is only on ICS. So since you're on GB, it is not a problem (and totally unrelated to clearing internal storage.)
Post back if you have any questions or anythin'.
If you are on gingerbread then there is no danger of the EEMC superbug(As far as I've heard/read). As for reseting I don't have a link to a tutorial off the top of my head, however the process is pretty simple. Start searching through the development forums for the stock odin files and then flash them. I can try to find you a tutorial/links tonight but I don't really have time right now...besides the search function works the same way for you as it would for me! Feel free to ask if you need anything else!
Hahaha MochaCharok beat me to it!
Thanks guys. The phone at one time was on an ICS rom and yes I can search for it. I just wanted to make sure before I did, that this could be done. So, I will see about finding the tutorial and how to go about getting the phone all back to factory like. I know I am so anal this way, but I really do like to start with a clean slate before I do anything to any phone. thanks again guys I will holler if I run into any problems. LOVE this phone though.

When you activated the phone on your account it should've wiped everything they had on the phone prior and reset it to stock. At least that's what happened when I activated a phone I'd bought from an XDA member. So I started with a clean slate automatically.
It didn't for whatever reason. I had to go in and edit the MIN and MDN manually to get it to activate so maybe that is why. That thing was a HUGE pain to do too. It would not take and kept resetting. Had to try it like 5 times.

If you are stuck with what to do next then take it to a Sprint store and let them wipe it for you.
Good info
As I'm going to try this and hopefully get the missus off her Opt S and onto an E4GT this week this was good timing to cover the process.
Here's what I am planning to do:
1) Flash EL29 + Root
2) Factory Reset from Recovery (which should clear NVRAM if I understand correctly)
3) Call MVNO and have them set up phone
4) Allow hands-free activation to hopefully fill in the blanks
If this works as I hope then I shouldn't have to tinker manually with the NVRAM data.... if not then I have my phone to base most of that off of. And of course it depends if the carrier will let me set the phone up - in the past they haven't been warm to using a different phone unless you purchased it directly from them.
All this just to sit tight until we can get the GS3 probably next year.. yeesh.
Hi Guys,
I am very new to this android platform. I had everysingle iphone and i just switched over. I bought an originally rogers, now unlocked, S3 which is rooted and loaded with the Ariel 2.0 Rom. I was wondering, if i go to Settings>backup and reset>Factory data reset.. will it brick my phone or anything? I just want to reset it with the Ariel 2.0 again and delete all my current data because the phone is pretty laggy.
Thanks
Nafizur
Really, 37 views and not a single person knows the answer? please help guys.
No, a factory reset should not brick your phone dude, in fact if you read most developers threads on here they recommend a full wipe prior to flashing ROMS anyway to assure a clean install.I would do it in recovery though not the method you mention
Make sure you back up what you dont want to lose though.
I have a rooted Desire 816. I rooted the phone to get rid of bloatware and free up some space for apps. Well, that was pretty ineffective. I must have screwed something up when I rooted this all that time ago, because I did a factory reset earlier, and now I can't get any mobile data. None whatsoever. Whenever I tap it to turn it on, nothing happens. I guess my only option at this point is to unroot the phone and go back to stock with all the moronic bloatware included. A total wipe and revert to when I first got the damn thing. I'd much rather have Cyanogen on here, but I've been reading people have been having data issues when installing. Anyway, if anyone could please walk me through how to get my phone back to its original state, I'd appreciate it. I'd be really ecstatic if I was able to get Cyanogen on here, so if it's feasible, I'd appreciate help there, too. Thank you.
