My guess is in the CWM flashable zip it extracts the system folder to "/system" so it overwrites the system folder and not "/system/" I may be wrong, and probably am, but its just my guess.
Different system, won't work.

I think dewizzed is becoming the best rom ATM. So I would give that one a go and jugs also.

Has anyone made progress on porting a portrait/landscape rotation animation?
Im working on this right now. Found the rotation animation in framework.jar

I'd be curious to know what kernel as well. You try eri n apns for service? Wifi might be the same fix we've used for 2.3.5+ issues in the past as well since our kernel is technically built for 2.3.4.

hey barnacles,
if you grab the 'official' rom from miui.com or even the int'l sgs2 miui port from xda, all you need to do is swap the zimage with one of the epic 4g touch's (like LoStKernel) and it will boot up and function (maybe what the OP of this thread did, didn't download to see). Data and wifi were no go. If I remember, the cameras were working though unlike what this OP says. I've been working on this here and there but I definitely dont have as much free time as I'd like as I'm getting ready to move to the other side of the earth.
I'll be more than happy to answer questions and/or help development going as soon as I can put some time aside to work on this.

I'm not a fan of the MIUI ROM(its to iPhone-ish IMHO) but I still wanted to say thank you for this post. Although I know it wasn't its purpose, it did point me to the SkyRocket's Development, and Themes & Apps Section, and man do they have some goodies over there, which I never would've found had it not been for this post, so thanks again!
so you essentially made small tweaks and got aosp based rom from sgs2 int to boot? if so, nice. I wonder if this works with CM7 as well.
Omggggg we need to get this rolling. I thought someone was already working on a port for MIUI? What is this for? Excited nonetheless lol.

Everything worked fine, granted there was some att crap in wifi settings that is useless to us, but at least we know we can use their stuff too. I also flashed jugs kernel with the rom as Im sure the kernel is different, but maybe not. Anyway, just wanted to let you know. Oh, they just got an ota to 2.3.6 yesterday, ill post the system dump here in a few. Hopefully the devs will move to that base.
*I thought I'd throw a zip similar to what they have together. I think this zip will do the trick. Give it a shot and let me know if auto rotate is still borked. I dont think it will be but I have CM7 setup and working audio so I dont want to ruin that Let me know and Ill fix issues if there is any.

It does have a an issue with our accelerometer it seems though.

The Alien Rom is excellent as far as I'm concerned, if we could figure the orientation issue out, it would be just about perfect.

Maybe some of you on custom ROMs have noticed that your second core functions strange, which would also mean terrible battery life and abnormally hot phones.
Well, this is due to something causing the cores to switch governors to "performance" upon boot. The only way to fix it is from a script or other app that controls CPU. That's not all. The second core seems to not function according to specs. It will either always stay on, or always stay off. mpdecision doesn't appear to work properly.
Well, I've narrowed this down to "samsungani" and "samsungpowersound" which are located in /system/bin/. Removing these at an attempt to get custom boot animations working and to get rid of boot sounds are what's causing the funky core behaviors.
The fix is to restore the two files and chmod them 755 as well as chgrp to 2000 to get them back to the way they're supposed to be.
I'm not sure if any of this effects custom kernels but it sure does on the Stock kernel.
The file I uploaded will restore the samsungani and samsungpowersoundplay files to /system/bin/ as well as copy over silent PowerOn and PowerOff sounds.
Wow that's awesome that you figured this out. Great job!!

Do we need to flash this after we flash a rom obviously your rom will have the fix so I'm not worried about it but for others who arent using your rom.
Edit: is there any way I can test to insure both cores are doing what they are supposed to be doing like an app per say

Well, it really only will matter if your current ROM includes a different boot animation and/or removes those files. In any other case, it will do nothing.

OK thanks again love the rom I know you get asked this a lot but if you ever need a tester let me know I use to test for mijuah but my son stole my s2 so I'm bored now lol.
Zip applied, and I had to duplicate the process to confirm what I thought I saw:
Been running blazer 1.6 for a few days now and I honestly don't know what (if any) boot animations are built into that rom, but in the spirit of testing (and flash addiction) I used this zip.
This is what I noticed (and duplicated to confirm)--
Chainfire's live dmesg/logcat (I used paid versions) were replaced by this zip file.
When I "reinstalled" the first attempt found no boot animation files. I attempted install again and this time it did indeed "repair" the logcat/dmesg boot screen.
This is my first dual core so I have no experience in these apps working or not on such phones.
If this is wide spread then perhaps chainfire might want to look into an update to his code, if this is specific to the sgs3 then maybe we have deeper issues to delve into.
Sprint...LF9...Blazer1.6...no other customizations

This guide is going to show you how to port ROMs to our Sprint GS3!
Before we begin, please download the programs 7zip and Notepad++ as we will need them. And get a Stock JB ROM for our Device(Preferably DeOdexed)
So lets get started!!!
1) Download the ROM you want to port
2) Open it using 7zip
3) Replace the kernel/boot.img with ours
4) Go to /system/lib/modules. Delete everything and replace with ours
5) then go to /system/lib/hw. Delete and replace everything with ours
6) For the Hard keys and soft keys to work go to /system/usr/keychars and delete and replace then go to /system/usr/keylayout and delete and replace with ours
7) Now go to /system/etc and delete the following and replace with ours:
- vold.fstab
- /wifi
- /ppp
Congrats! You have ported your first ROM! But please do the devs, and myself a favor and don't spam the Development Subforum with ports!

I'm thinking the same thing. If so, somebody should start a single thread (idk which section) that houses all of these types of ports. This just sounds too simple to work though.
I believe that there is a program that allows you to link a rom to port with a rom from your device.. It processes it.. And spits out a supposed, ported rom. I don't remember where I read it. Maybe this is the manual method... But, I agree.. It sounds too easy

Yes, it's that easy. But porting,to me, is like the simplest form of creating a custom ROM. Next is theming and modding, then comes building from source.
Nonetheless, hopefully this motivates some people to get their hands dirty with some work

This is good for cm based roms or roms for same device but separate carriers (sprint, Verizon, etc.) But for most others it would take much more. Just have fun and don't go trying to port htc sense right away lol If you're lucky you won't have to edit framework or anything

If we did this would we be able to you the mods/morphs that the ROM comes with? This sounds cool and all but Sprint I believe and I could be wrong are the only one with JB Final others are leaks. Don't want to go down that road again.

I tried porting the gnote 2 sprint rom to my gs3 but I keep getting a status 1 error in cwm. I guess its not that easy. But I did notice that there wasnt a modules folder in the gnote 2 rom that I downloaded but I still added it in there. Any thoughts??

I guess the OP forgot to mention this would only work with ROMs similar to our phones, for example, other GS3 variants. The Note 2 has an Exynos chip, not a snapdragon S4 like ours, so porting will require a bit more effort than what the OP stated.

This is where i started or, i ported a rom from the tmo s3. It may seem difficult at first but trust me when you're done you'll think its a cakewalk

I wanna port a rom of another device to my phone, the main hardware is similar except that, that phone has a wvga resolution and mine has a hvga. Will this method still work?

UPDATE: @enewman17 and @talkingmonkeys have created a working Samsung keyboard for TouchWiz 4.4.2 for SGS3. It is located here in its own thread.
For historical purposes, below is my original attempt.
-------------------------
I updated my phone to @saranhai and @DocHoliday77 's 4.4.2 ND8 port. I have been using @enewman17's Note2 keyboard on Dandroid 4.1.2 for months, so I preferred to keep the same layout.
I used his 4.3 version and modded it to work on 4.4.2. I am not as experienced in smali as others on the forum, but I was able to get the keyboard working with no FCs (so far, been a few hours of use). Unfortunately, I had to remove a few references to "EmojiParser", so I cannot guarantee how well emojis will work; I never use them so I was not worried. If you report bugs, I can try to fix them, but I cannot guarantee it. As usual, logcats will be the best method.
As usual, I cannot be held responsible if your device bricks or you make a nuclear weapon using this keyboard. Make a nandroid, flash, and probably wipe the dalvik cache to be safe.
Let me also reiterate, I am not the original developer, @enewman17 is. He's been a great help to our community and graciously agreed to let me put this up. I simply modded his keyboard.
If you can improve it, by all means. If you can host it elsewhere, by all means. (It's hosted on my personal Dropbox, so I cannot guarantee uptime.)

It wasn't correct but even redownloading it I'm not having much luck. It still won't appear at all. Thinking its something on my end but if you don't mind double checking it and uploading another one I'll try it later today.

Which ROM are you using? Might be a mod in the framework

I got it working after a clean flash of StockMod Rom. So, it might be something that was modified. So, far I installed most my mods and it is still working.

I'm not a graphic designer. I do have the images available. If you or someone would like to modify them, I can make them available as a download, and can repack the keyboard with the new design.
