[Q] cant access recovery after root with unrevoked 3.21

Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post and i need some help. Here's the story.
I rooted my phone a few weeks ago, everything went stunningly easy, and worked great. Clockworkmod recovery was installed (by unrevoked) at this time. While driving home I broke my phone's screen and had to get a replacement phone. Asurion had a phone to me within 18 hours (my word they're fast). I slapped the 16GB SD card from my first phone in and I was off and running.
So I have my new phone with my original 16GB SD card and set it up normally again. I wanted to wait a bit and get it set prior to rooting again. Tonight I rooted the phone with Unrevoked 3.21 as I did before. It went much faster than before. I now have S-Off but clockworkmod recovery is not on my hboot screen and recovery mode doesn't work at all. Just a black screen for about 15 seconds before loading into the OS.
Have I screwed up a one click root? I've tried a few things.
I used droid-life as a guide to help me root.

build 3.21.605.1 CL231334 release-keys
Although clockworkmod recovery isn't in Hboot the reflash tool still says "Recovery Image: ClockworkMod Recovery" on the bottom. I have tried renaming the clockworkmod folder on the SD card to see if it would create a new one, or boot into clockworkmod recovery after realizing the folder is not there.
I have also tried formatting my SD card and running the reflash tool again. Again no dice, no recovery mode.
I have tried unrevoked 3.21 after every change.
What have I done? what do I do? any suggestions?
Thanks for anybody and everybody's input. I appreciate it. I would like to start flashing roms but really dont want to mess with it if I dont have a recovery option.

Is it a complete download of the unrevoked tool? Sounds almost like the recovery package isn't there. Try redownloading unrevoked and run it again. Do you have root and Superuser app at least? If so, try downloading and running ROM Manager and tell it to flash Clockwork again. Still no dice, try telling it to flash RA recovery. And for the record, which screen do you have?

thanks for the quick reply I will try that. Yes I have root and the superuser app.
I dont know how to tell which screen I have, but I was wondering the same thing. BoyGeniusReport says its incredibly hard to tell the difference and I haven't found were it says SLED vs AMOLED

Downloaded unrevoked 3.21 straight from unrevoked twice.
Tried the reflashing clockworkmod recovery, no dice.
Whats an RA recovery?

It's also the second to the last option in ROM Manager. Flash Alternate Recovery: RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6
I actually like that one better. It was able to format my SD card correctly. I just miss the integration with ROM Manager.

now if I want to flash ROMs do I need to know anything in particular before doing so with the AMON_RA recovery tool.
I downloaded the a4d utility that I found when doing a search for AMON_RA on appbrain. It asks if I want to flash my phone to unlock my bootloader (and void my warranty, haha).
do I need to unlock my bootloader before flashing ROM's
I like the sense UI. thats all I have actually used. Is there anything better? what are suggested, STABLE, ROMs/kernels for the DInc? or should I stay "stock 2.2 rooted"?

Uncommon sense with king kernel bfs # 5 is as good or better than stock.
Btw. Hboot only shows recovery, not clockwork recovery. Did you ever try selecting recovery from hboot?

and still has all the capabilities of stock 2.2 (GPS, WIFI Tether, etc), I know that was a problem at one point. I assume/hope all has been fixed with those issues.
With flashing ROMs. do Custom ROM's have the bloatwear (CityID) removed?

Uncommon sense has some of it removed. Some of it you can remove yourself. It's the only rom I've donated to and had on my phone more than two days.
Just be careful if removing stuff. Some of it has other dependencies. There are guides on how to remove things safely without breaking other functionality.

Also do a backup first. I'm not sure how amon ra works, but it must be in there somewhere.

I used to use Virtuous 3.0.1, but I've switched over to Redemption ROM 2.0.5

It is. In the main menu, just like Clockwork

So I definitely have recovery with the amon_RA 1.7.6 alternative recovery with the ROM manager. but from what I have read I can no longer use ROM manager to flash.
Now I have been searching for information/instructions on how to use AMON_RA but have come up short, at least recently written stuff. I can find a ton of information about clockworkmod which I assume is because of Unrevoked 3.21.
PonsAsinorem as you said you miss the integration of ROM manager. I really want to use ROM manager.
I read somewhere in XDA that people were having trouble using clockworkmod and ROM manager and it could be because of a corrupted cache. there were some LIMITED instructions about using ADB to fix it but I wasn't completely understanding them.
I think my problem is spawning from using my old SD card and maybe a corrupted cache. I have made a back up using Amon_RA (actually two).
Does anyone think that completely formatting my SD card (after moving my backups to my MAC) and factory restoring my phone. then reflashed using unrevoked 3.21, or reflashed clockworkmod recovery using rom manager would work to solve my problem with clockworkmod recovery?
I would have backups if it didn't work. I would just have to restore the Amon_RA backup if I screwed anything up or wanted my SD card back... Right?

Dirtpan. you're a lifesaver thanks for pointing me at this. saved clockwork for me. All this time, its because I have the new SLCD screen as opposed to the AMOLED screen.
For the record, my wife has an AMOLED screen and I an SLCD. I can see no discernible difference.

[Q] Need help with flashing a different recovery

Ok im having problems. I've rooted many phones and never seen this before. After I run unrEVOked the phone say S-OFF which means its rooted but it won't let me change the recovery. Im trying to switch to Amon Ra but clockwork will not go away. Ive tried to flash thru rom manager and using fastboot. It will say its changed but when I go into recovery its still clockwork. Can anyone help with this?

Sometimes when it gets "stuck" like that I'll switch back and forth between ar and cw in the same instance of rom manager. eventually the install takes.

[Q] Gingerbread, custom kernels and Rom Manager

I'm having an issue with ROM Manager. I've contacted Koush and RA and we're are in the midst of working it out. I am curious if any one else has had the same, or similar issues.
I run CM7031 on my Evo. I recently flashed SavagedZen202 kernel from ROM Manager. I used it for about a week and I wanted to check out a taimat kernel. I backedup with CWM and tried to flash to RA to make a nandroid. ROM Manager said the RA was flashed, but when I booted into recovery I was still in CWM. I ttried everything, clearing cash, erasing recovery, un/re installing RM, flashing earlier versions of CWM. Nothing worked. So, without making a nandroid I flashed tiamat405. I figured that would clear up the issue, but I was wrong. Same issue. Finally I flashed a previous backup to CM with its original kernel and everything was fine. I could flash back and forth between CWM and RA. Thinking everything was alright and that I had done something wrong in my other backups, I flashed tiamat again. Same issue, I can not flash between recoveries.
If any one has similar issues or possible causes I'd appreciate the input.

Kinda confused...so what actually is the problem?

Had the exact problem. Stuck on clockworkmod no matter what I do. To top it off clockworkmod didn't even work correctly, couldn't flash correctly. I tried to restore a Rom but it ended up being the same Rom, so it didn't actually restore. I ended up unrooting the phone and flash the Sprint 3.7 ruu to go back stock. Then I rooted again and RA/clockworkmod switching started working again.

I guess the problem is one of functionality, I can't flash back and forth between CWM and RA. Its not a big deal because I'm currently on RA and I like RA. But, I have to wonder if RM isn't working correctly are my nandroids backing up correctly? I could go back to CM7 kernel, but I wanted to push my OC a bit more and I wanted to use _viperboy_ scrip for uv and its built for Evo on tiamat. At least that is my understanding. So, what's the problem? A malfunctioning app, I guess! Or maybe an incompatibility between an app and a kernel?!?! And maybe something to do with the ROM? I don't know! That's why I asked.
I had a problem early on when I uped from CM6 to CM7 with Titanium backup, but I worked that out. I've been running CM7 for a while now without issue, until this.

you should just reboot in to recovery and flash your kernels from there instead of using RM its a much better way...

Yeah, I flashed SZ from RM just to kind of see how it worked. But I flashed the tiamat zip from recovery.

cant flash CWM over Amon RA in rom manager

I've been using Amon RA basically since i've had my incredible, but recently with all these new roms, specifically the 3.0/3.5 roms, they seem to be only CWM compatible, and i was trying to switch back to CWM through ROM manager. It says it has been installed but everytime i boot into recovery, its just going to Amon RA. So i was wondering how i could install this manually? There seems to be a way to do it through ABD, but i have no experience with this, plus all instructions using this method i see seem to be for PC's, I have a MAC...
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Do you have "erase recovery" checked in the settings? It clears your recovery before flashing a new one. I know a lot of people have had issues upgrading versions of CWM because that box wasn't checked.

[Q] Problem flashing ROMs

Hello all. My girlfriends E4G(my old phone before I got me E3D) is having some issues.
Its hboot 6.17
TWRP 2.0
Any ROM I flash it gets stuck at the HTC EVO 4G logo. A few ROMs will boot once but once you reboot, it gets stuck at the HTC logo again. Her current ROM(Swag) is an older version, and shes wanting to "try something different" because she sees all the ROMs for my E3D.
When I had the phone, I didn't have any issues with flashing ROMs. I ran CM7 for a while, then Swag. This was MONTHS ago, so I'm not sure what changed since I switched to my E3D.
I've tried 7 different ROMs, I can't upgrade hboot or radios(the files I have downloaded here wont work with the PC36IMG. The boot loader sees it, then asks to reboot.)
What I want to do is completely return phone to stock, S-SON, install a stock Sprint software, run OTA to update everything(to the newest OTA), then re-S-OFF and figure out the best recovery to use.
I've tried following the S-On tool, but it didnt work for me. Maybe I'm missing something, but any help would be appreciated.

Scroll down to the facts. Follow the "is it possible to restore everything to stock" to the letter. Download that file to the SD card somehow and load up your boot loader. It worked for me. Best of luck.

You can simply flash the newer version of the twrp 2 recovery, or flash amon ra; it seems your recovery isn't wiping.

There may be a possible bug in TWRP so just update your recovery. There is a newer version released revently. Try that first.

Well, I put it back to s-on, flashed latest ota, updated everything, redid s-off used amonra, tried to flash a rom and still had the same issue. I even wiped everything three times.
