cant flash CWM over Amon RA in rom manager - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using Amon RA basically since i've had my incredible, but recently with all these new roms, specifically the 3.0/3.5 roms, they seem to be only CWM compatible, and i was trying to switch back to CWM through ROM manager. It says it has been installed but everytime i boot into recovery, its just going to Amon RA. So i was wondering how i could install this manually? There seems to be a way to do it through ABD, but i have no experience with this, plus all instructions using this method i see seem to be for PC's, I have a MAC...
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Try the PB31IMG versions from http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=85

Do you have "erase recovery" checked in the settings? It clears your recovery before flashing a new one. I know a lot of people have had issues upgrading versions of CWM because that box wasn't checked.

tried checking the erase the recovery box, did not work, but flashing it as a pbimg worked. Thanks guys!

[Q] cant access recovery after root with unrevoked 3.21

Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post and i need some help. Here's the story.
I rooted my phone a few weeks ago, everything went stunningly easy, and worked great. Clockworkmod recovery was installed (by unrevoked) at this time. While driving home I broke my phone's screen and had to get a replacement phone. Asurion had a phone to me within 18 hours (my word they're fast). I slapped the 16GB SD card from my first phone in and I was off and running.
So I have my new phone with my original 16GB SD card and set it up normally again. I wanted to wait a bit and get it set prior to rooting again. Tonight I rooted the phone with Unrevoked 3.21 as I did before. It went much faster than before. I now have S-Off but clockworkmod recovery is not on my hboot screen and recovery mode doesn't work at all. Just a black screen for about 15 seconds before loading into the OS.
Have I screwed up a one click root? I've tried a few things.
I used droid-life as a guide to help me root.
Phone Stats:
Droid Incredible
Asurion replacement
OS 2.2
radio 2.15.00.07.28
kernel 2.6.32.15-gb7b01d1
build 3.21.605.1 CL231334 release-keys
Although clockworkmod recovery isn't in Hboot the reflash tool still says "Recovery Image: ClockworkMod Recovery" on the bottom. I have tried renaming the clockworkmod folder on the SD card to see if it would create a new one, or boot into clockworkmod recovery after realizing the folder is not there.
I have also tried formatting my SD card and running the reflash tool again. Again no dice, no recovery mode.
I have tried unrevoked 3.21 after every change.
What have I done? what do I do? any suggestions?
Thanks for anybody and everybody's input. I appreciate it. I would like to start flashing roms but really dont want to mess with it if I dont have a recovery option.
-MOJO
Is it a complete download of the unrevoked tool? Sounds almost like the recovery package isn't there. Try redownloading unrevoked and run it again. Do you have root and Superuser app at least? If so, try downloading and running ROM Manager and tell it to flash Clockwork again. Still no dice, try telling it to flash RA recovery. And for the record, which screen do you have?
I wish I knew

thanks for the quick reply I will try that. Yes I have root and the superuser app.
I dont know how to tell which screen I have, but I was wondering the same thing. BoyGeniusReport says its incredibly hard to tell the difference and I haven't found were it says SLED vs AMOLED
Grrrr

Downloaded unrevoked 3.21 straight from unrevoked twice.
Tried the reflashing clockworkmod recovery, no dice.
Whats an RA recovery?

It's an alternate recovery. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874
It's also the second to the last option in ROM Manager. Flash Alternate Recovery: RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6
I actually like that one better. It was able to format my SD card correctly. I just miss the integration with ROM Manager.
Phew... It worked.
the alternate recovery worked.
now if I want to flash ROMs do I need to know anything in particular before doing so with the AMON_RA recovery tool.
I downloaded the a4d utility that I found when doing a search for AMON_RA on appbrain. It asks if I want to flash my phone to unlock my bootloader (and void my warranty, haha).
do I need to unlock my bootloader before flashing ROM's
I like the sense UI. thats all I have actually used. Is there anything better? what are suggested, STABLE, ROMs/kernels for the DInc? or should I stay "stock 2.2 rooted"?

Uncommon sense with king kernel bfs # 5 is as good or better than stock.
Btw. Hboot only shows recovery, not clockwork recovery. Did you ever try selecting recovery from hboot?

and still has all the capabilities of stock 2.2 (GPS, WIFI Tether, etc), I know that was a problem at one point. I assume/hope all has been fixed with those issues.
With flashing ROMs. do Custom ROM's have the bloatwear (CityID) removed?

Uncommon sense has some of it removed. Some of it you can remove yourself. It's the only rom I've donated to and had on my phone more than two days.
Just be careful if removing stuff. Some of it has other dependencies. There are guides on how to remove things safely without breaking other functionality.
Also do a backup first. I'm not sure how amon ra works, but it must be in there somewhere.

It is. In the main menu, just like Clockwork
So I definitely have recovery with the amon_RA 1.7.6 alternative recovery with the ROM manager. but from what I have read I can no longer use ROM manager to flash.
Now I have been searching for information/instructions on how to use AMON_RA but have come up short, at least recently written stuff. I can find a ton of information about clockworkmod which I assume is because of Unrevoked 3.21.
PonsAsinorem as you said you miss the integration of ROM manager. I really want to use ROM manager.
I read somewhere in XDA that people were having trouble using clockworkmod and ROM manager and it could be because of a corrupted cache. there were some LIMITED instructions about using ADB to fix it but I wasn't completely understanding them.
I think my problem is spawning from using my old SD card and maybe a corrupted cache. I have made a back up using Amon_RA (actually two).
Does anyone think that completely formatting my SD card (after moving my backups to my MAC) and factory restoring my phone. then reflashed using unrevoked 3.21, or reflashed clockworkmod recovery using rom manager would work to solve my problem with clockworkmod recovery?
I would have backups if it didn't work. I would just have to restore the Amon_RA backup if I screwed anything up or wanted my SD card back... Right?
Thanks for all the help so far.

Dirtpan. you're a lifesaver thanks for pointing me at this. saved clockwork for me. All this time, its because I have the new SLCD screen as opposed to the AMOLED screen.
For the record, my wife has an AMOLED screen and I an SLCD. I can see no discernible difference.
Thanks again everybody for the help.

[Q] Rom manager wont flash recovery

I'm running CM7 with Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5. Im trying to flash the latest radio, so i need to flash back to a Clockworkmod 2.x.
But the thing is Rom manager already says my current recovery is 2.5.0.7. But when i actually reboot into recovery its definitely still 3.0.0.5. I've tried to flash all of the older versions of Clockworkmod available in Rom manager, and it says they flash correctly, and rom manager even reports that my clockworkmod version is the one i tried to flash. But when i reboot into recovery it hasnt changed.
Ive even tried to flash amon ra through rom manager and that did nothing.
I have "erase recovery" checked in settings. I tried to fix permissions. I've rebooted and even wiped data. Ive gone into market and uninstalled the updates to go back to rom manager 3.x but that didnt fix the problem. Ive wiped dalvik cache and that didnt work either.
Does anyone know what the problem is?
If not, does anyone have a link to a clockworkmod 2.x recovery.img so i can just manually flash it through fastboot? ive looked around everywhere but i cant seem to find one.
so i restored a really old backup of cm6 (which has rom manager 3.x), which i didnt even think was possible with CWM 3 and edify scripting, flashed amon ra in rom manager, and once i rebooted into recovery it was actually amon ra. i flashed the radio and all seems well. not sure why CM7 with rom manager 4 wouldnt correctly flash a recovery, but it seems resolved for me at least.
For future reference, it is just as easy and recommended to load amon RA via the bootloader as it is from the ROM Manager app.

whats really the difference between flashing through the bootloader, flashing through rom manager, flashing through fastboot, or flashing through the command line with flash_image?
Obviously rom manager has problems, thats what this whole post is about. But as long as it actually does the flash there shouldnt be difference between the different methods of flashing should there?
You basically answered the question. It's not that ROM Manager is incapable, there have been times when it failed to flash recovery and there have been times when it didn't contain the latest RA recovery. Yea, those things are minor, but it is enough for me to discard using it. Besides, I'm always in the recovery itself so it is only natural for me to do everything from within recovery or the bootloader. But, to each his or her own.

Can i ask why you prefer amon ra over clockwork mod? Does one offer an advantage over the other? Does RA support edify scripting?
I was a faithful ClockworkMod user when I first rooted my device. I had no problems and no intention to switch until around version 3.x.x.x. after that, I started having issues with it not wiping properly so I switched over to amon RA. Although those problems have since been corrected, I have become quite accustomed to amon RA and until it fails me, I will stick with it. Furthermore, there have been times when people's devices have failed to properly boot or wouldn't allow access to recovery until they flashed amon RA. I like its menu layout and how well it works, but that's just me...

How do we update CWM?

I've been doing tons of searching but I can't find an answer, I have still have CWM 2.5xx and I need 3.0.0.7 for most ROMs (I wish I knew that beforehand, I've been flashing roms and having tons of problems, and I'm sure that might be a reason why.)
anyone know how to do this?
Thanks!
Update your Rom Manager in the market and you will have the latest CWM. If you've already done so, go into rom manager and scroll down to "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" and change as needed. Your CWM will be orange now instead of green.

Download an Inc recovery from http://www.dougpiston.com check the MD5 sum with the one provided, rename the file PB31IMG.zip put it on the root of your SD card, boot into HBOOT and follow the onscreen prompts from there. That should do it for you!
EDIT: Or that ^ lol. I forgot about that... Haven't used ROM Manager in a whileeee.

Haha me either, I only use rom manager now to delete my backups. For everything else, there's recovery!
I use Astro for that

edit: figured it out, thanks guys!
Yeah I pretty much had the same issue recently after I rooted with unrevoked and had whatever 2.5.x.x cwm that it put on there, and I wanted 3.0.0.7 so I could try a gingersense rom. After trying the zip method through recovery which I couldn't get working, I ended up just using the Rom Manager app, which brought me to 3.0.0.8 and I downgraded to 3.0.0.7.

[Q] I Can't Boot Into Recovery

I successfully rooted my phone a few days ago using the Revolutionary method and flashed ClockworkMod Recovery without a problem. Then I flashed CyanogenMod 7.1.0 again without a problem. I noticed my gps has been having an issue detecting my location so I figured I should flash the nandroid for my stock rooted android 2.3.3 rom and see if the issue still exists. My main problem is that I can't boot into recovery. Apparently I have the latest version of Clockwork. I try to boot into recovery using different methods and I keep ending up at the white screen that says 'Revolutionary' in pink at the top with the 3 skateboarding androids at the bottom. I try to get to recovery from that screen also still with no success. It just reboots into that screen. I was thinking I may have to use the ruu to unroot my Evo (I rather find an alternative solution). How can I regain my ability to boot into recovery? Any help would be much appreciated...

If grab the pc36img for amon_ra, throw it in the root of your SD, using a card reader in a computer, get into hboot and let it install. Then try to get into recovery. F clockwork anyway.....90% of the peeps around here having problems are running that recovery

Turn off your phone, then when turning it on hold the volume rocker in the down position, you will then boot into hboot settings, hboot will automatically check for the update file(PC36IMG)after its done, scroll to recovery and enter that way,if you still cant get into recovery, you will need to download and reinstall the latest revolutionary root tool,i recommend using "TeamWin Recovery Project" i've never had a problem with it.

I installed a new recovery after i installed revolution, because i also had recovery issues. The version should be at the top of the recovery screen.I didnt like rom manager too much, for some reason it gives me problems.
They say that this version of Amon can be used to restore clockwork backups. I haven't tried it with clockwork myself because I avoids clockworkmod.
Thanks for the help everyone. Everything is gravy now. I'm happy with TWRP. I do have a question for making a backup. By default in TWRP, the 1st 3 boxes are checked up for when attempting to make a backup. Do any of you guys ever check the other boxes (Recovery, cache, .android_secure) and if so, why? Also, when you attempt to wipe before restoring, which items do you guys wipe? Any other tips or suggestions about this recovery would appreciated too.
I backup everything except cache.

why do you boot into the bootloader first?no multi-boot option?Anyway,it sounds like the CM7 rom you flashed is corrupted,It sounds like you might have to format your sd card and start over,or reload a new recovery from the bootloader. If you had a multi-boot option you might be able to solve this without formatting.
hey,
try doing a factory reset getting rid of any apps you currently have and try using the advanced power menu to boot into recovery if that doesnt work, try re flashing a different recovery. let us know how it goes from there!
Good luck,
Stevo
Just try reflashing the recovery, should solve the problem.

CWM is junk, for one. Switch to Amon Ra

What he said. Man, I just finished typing the same advice in a different thread. Lol.
Seems people coming from Samsung devices in particular tend to start with CWM. I'm not speculating on the OP here, just a trend I've noticed as of late.

I used CWM for my initial nandroid, after first rooting with Unrevoked, then flashed Amon. Anyway, as said try re-flashing recovery. Also, FYI, that "all Gingerbread Roms" was just for one device, the article was slightly inaccurate. I flashed the Beats audio zip myself but upon investigating in Roote Explorer saw that none of the files had actually written.
CWM is a great and sometimes better choice for a lot of phones, just not the Evo

I have been thinking about Wiping everything and starting from scratch again, but I am afraid that if I wipe I wont be able to get into the recovery and get screwed and not be able to re-flash C-Mod 7.
I will attach a video of wtf my phone is doing.
