Dear Acer/Nvidia,
We are owners and prospective owners of the Acer A100 Tablet. However, we were very disappointed to discover that the device's bootloader will only allow packages signed by Acer to be installed, and thus also does not allow us root access to the tablet's operating system.
While we trust that the A100 will be well-supported with official updates, this tablet has the potential to be an excellent platform for development by enthusiasts as well, and we consider the ability to modify the software running on the tablet to be a valuable (or even essential) feature. The current inability of the A100 to accept custom firmware is already dissuading some from buying this tablet, and even causing others to consider returning devices that they have recently bought.
We understand that custom firmware cannot be supported by Acer, but we consider that it is our right to customise our devices in any way we wish: once bought, the A100 is our property alone to modify if we choose. HTC implemented locked bootloaders on their devices last year, but have since seen that giving users this freedom is the right thing to do, and are enabling users to unlock their devices if they so choose. This has been considered very welcome in the Android community, and we hope that Acer will do the same.
Please consider giving us the ability to unlock our tablets. We assure you that fostering a vibrant development community around the will promote sales and establish Acer's reputation in the community as an excellent and receptive supplier of mobile devices.
Yours faithfully,
The Undersigned

Sincerely,

Did we post on rootzwiki in the A500 forum too? There isn't a dedicated A100 forum but there's posts about the A100 anyway. Hopefully the mods will sticky it!

VERY disappointed in Acer
Guys i am so disappointed in Acer, all they do is lie to us.
Sreekanth P: Hi, my name is Sreekanth P. How may I help you?
Mike Daher: i have a few questions for you
Mike Daher: first question is there any plans to update the acer a100 to ice cream sandwich
Mike Daher: ive asked about 4 times on acers facebook and nobody will respond to me.
Sreekanth P: Mike, I understand that you are trying to get the information about Android update.
Sreekanth P: There are no blogs or community by Acer, Mike.
Sreekanth P: May I know the serial number of the tablet?
Mike Daher: hold on let me get my tablet
Sreekanth P: Okay, Mike.
Mike Daher: sn or snid
Sreekanth P: You can either provide the Serial Number/SNID.
Mike Daher: ***********
Sreekanth P: Thank you for the information.
Sreekanth P: We have verified your product SNID *********** and it shows that your product is covered under standard limited warranty.
Mike Daher: what does that have to do with my question?
Sreekanth P: Mike, the Android updates are provided by Google and they are transmitted on air. Whenever the update is available for your tablet, you'll receive the pop up.
Sreekanth P: Acer has no control over the Android updates. You'll receive the Icecream Sandwich update when it is available for your tablet.
Mike Daher: okay, then here is my second question.
Mike Daher: does acer have any plans on unlocking the bootloader for the a100?
Sreekanth P: No, Mike. There are no such options.
Sreekanth P: It's not possible to root the tablet and Acer do not recommend or Support it.
Mike Daher: sreekanth
Mike Daher: it IS possible to root the tablet. im not saying that i have i do know it is possible however.
Mike Daher: i feel like your not giving me correct information
Mike Daher: Software updates are not ONLY from google. Google releases the software and its up to ACERs discretion to release an update or not for their device
Mike Daher: as for unlocking the bootloader.. it IS an option
Mike Daher: but acer so graciously denies letting the consumer unlock the bootloader easily like HTC does.
Mike Daher: therefore making software developers reverse engineer the software on your tablet. (btw the acer a500's bootloader is unlocked)
Mike Daher: now im not trying to be a jerk but you really should know your information if your JOB is support..
Mike Daher: have a good day.
You have disconnected.
I am Mike obviously..
oh and i signed the petition. Smart move OP thank you

Signed. Good Job Mike. Love seeing such passion from the community. How about some Occupy Acer? LOL. (You can see my sig and see how I feel about it)

Signed! Don't know if they will answer, but at least I got to speak my part.

Signed and sent a message over at Slatedroid about the petition.
Edit: Anyone thought of sending news of the petition to Android news sites (such as Android Central, etc)?

Email received from HTC support

Hey everyone,
I went ahead and emailed HTC support asking about if there is plans to have our bootloader unlocked with a future software upgrade. I received a pretty canned response. Just thought I might share for those of you that don't have the time to email them yourselves.
Direct link to HTC email support added, please email them yourself!:

Dear Ryan, Thank you for registering your feedback in regards to HTC’s latest statement on bootloader policy. While the statement notes that locked bootloaders will not be occurring on future devices, the official policy is still being reviewed as it pertains to existing devices. Please keep an eye on www.htc.com and www.twitter.com/htc for the latest news.

Question on unlocking bootloader for Droid Incredible II.
Hello HTC,
I currently own a Droid Incredible and am considering purchasing and Incredible II. I am waiting to hear if you will include a way to unlock the bootloader at some point. A statement from HTC will go a long way in helping me decide on my next phone purchase...
Sincerely,
Scott

Unfortunately HTC will see you as a potential customer of a future device in this case. They will likely push you to a device that will be unlocked rather than a device that likely will not be. I'm not saying don't try it, just that you should expect that kind of response.
Sent mine, i'll post the response when i recieve it.
Let's hope we can get something started here. Here's the direct link to the email support page to make it that much easier for those of you that haven't sent one yet. If everyone that viewed this thread sent an email, it will surely make some difference...? Maybe?

I did specifically state that I wanted the Dinc II.. We'll see. If anything, HTC that we mean business with all of their devices.
I put in my email that i hadn't yet upgraded but i would likely switch to a different brand because thunderbolt was too big for me.
Guess what i got back? The exact same email that you did, word for word.
I think that if you send them a email with the word bootloader in it, you will get the same response. I sent one earlier today and I also have the same reply, word for word.
I think if we keep asking them to make their policy retroactive for all previously locked phones, they might give an official statement that they're releasing the update for all the phones, similar to how the fans got them to stop locking the bootloader.
i got a response from HTC that appeared to be a little more personalized:
"At this point in time, we don't have any information on if and how existing locked bootloaders will be unlocked (although I, for one, will be surprized if we just leave them as-is)."
Take that for whatever it may be worth...

I would be surprised if they weren't working on it now. They did it for the sensation and the DInc2 was the phone that really started the natives grumbling, so... It's a race Between hackers and htc. I would love an official, safe unlock but...

Unlock my WFS bootloader

Everyone that is still s-on goto this page http://htcdev.com/contact and write "Unlock my WFS bootloader" click send and repeat as many times as you can. Cant hurt to try seeing how they are taking their sweet time with the upgrade.
Done.
Now up to others. This is the only way.
Facebook page isn't a great succes.
Really hope in the end of the month cyanogenmod 7 full working (camera, ...) for free on my phone.
Been there, done that and just did it again....
It's about time that something should start happening.
Boo HTCDEV if you're reading this, booo
If there is enough driving force then maybe we have a chance. A handful of users will not be sufficient, we need enough people for HTCDEV to notice that there is a large enough userbase to warrant them developing the unlock for the phone.
At the moment there simply isn't enough people.

I think so too but they probably already have developed the unlock and there's a fat guy in a smelly Big Android BBQ t-shirt sitting at the HTC HQ with a small red button next to his hand. All he has to do is press it and we all get the update, but no. He's sitting there reading these forums sniggering to himself with a fat cigar in his mouth because he's enjoying watching us all suffer at 600mhz.

Dear Pushkar Kurhekar,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service...............................................................In this regard we would like to intimate you that we are currently developing new boot loader unlocked software for your phone. HTC is still committed to allowing our customers to unlock the boot loaders if they wish, however we are still implementing the policy and many updates were already finalized prior to our change in policy. We apologize for the inconvenience, but be assured that we are working on a solution for our customers and our commitment has not changed. Please stay tuned to our official channels for ongoing updates on how we will be implementing this policy. Thank you for your patience.

I already have a magic but today I got a wfs from work, big disapointment to see it's s-on and not much can be done about it
Even the people that are already s-off should bug htcdev with this question, the sooner our devices get the bootloader unlocked the sooner the wfs scene will grow!

We thank you for your interest in unlocking your HTC Wildfire S but do not have information on when updates are released or which devices will be updated
We currently don’t have information regarding which phones will be unlocked beside the HTC Sensation. For this reason I would suggest you to follow our official website and social media networks for further announcements about which phones will be boot loader unlocked.

Let Acer know how you feel

As recently as Feb. 6th, Acer America updated their Google+ page regarding an ICS update: "Acer will be providing some information on Android tablet updates soon. Please stay tune."
A couple of us have already used the opportunity to express our dissatisfaction with their customer service, and I invite the rest of you to do the same.

[wARNING] Searching for blog writers!

Are you loving Android?
Are you into technical stuff?
Do you like to learn more and more about your operating system?
Do you love to write, get feedback, interact with the world?
Are your english skills (write) strong?
As a blog writer with a long activity (starting from early 2007) I never had the will to start an Android blog, thought I think it would be a great way to have visitors, especially if you write in a language that everyone nowadays knows - english.
Maintaining a blog alone is hard, but working together with other peoples it is a joy.
So I am looking for some dudes with strong english skills, strong skills of search and research, dudes with at least one android phone and with some experience in Android world to join me (and others) in the quest of making a great Android blog (and not only). This is mainly a project going, the blog is not created yet (I'll be the one who makes it), it will be on .wordpress.com domain for now (if everything goes well, we might aquire a domain).
The selection of admins will be harsh and I will keep in mind some facts when I will gonna read your application (I will keep in mind your behavior in this forum - if you are helpful, etc).
Here is a small questionaire that you will need to answer when you will apply for this:
Are you confident on writing long texts in english?
Do you own an android phone?
Did you did technical stuff regarding Android (rom building, themes, debugging, etc)?
Do you own a personal blog OR write in a friend's blog?

well, i didn't started it yet. so far I am gathering and forming a team.
also, hosting with .org needs a ftp server and I ain't got one.
