Removing voice command on start-up? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I've searched and haven't found solid answer. If I root the phone can I remove or freeze the built-in voice command that starts up when I use the bluetooth press?
I want to use a third party app I have had much more luck with. But every time I long press bluetooth when driving(in car a lot) the installed program always starts.
I have someone that is going to root my phone and was hoping this is one of the things that can be done.

Yep, once rooted you can use Titanium Backup to remove those pesky programs and bloatware that came with your device. Also, why not root yourself? There are one touch root methods that are "so easy a caveman could do it"

Thanks! I used to tweak my old Windows phone. Went to Android this spring and just haven't felt as comfortable thinking I will screw something up. If its as easy as one touch I'm in. Sorry to be a pain is there one touch instructions somewhere? Thx in advance

Here ya go, one-touch root thanks to sfhub. This is what I used and it worked like a charm. Just make sure to follow directions. This root is for EG30/EG31/EK02 only. If your running EL13/EL26/EL29 click the link in the directions to use that root. Good luck, like I said Simple.

Appreciate it. Won't bother with a lot of questions from here. Got rooted, Titanium, froze the voice command. Works great.
Is there a list of apps I should freeze? Is there a link that suggests what apps I should look at now that I am rooted and what tweaks I should make?

SWEET! Nice job man... Wasn't too difficult was it? As far as a list of apps to remove, I just pretty much removed all stuff I don't use. (Ap Mobile, Buddies Now, Home Screen Tips, Sprint Mobile Wallet, Yahoo Finance, etc.) those are just some of the items I removed, but might be some that you want to keep. Make sure to do a full-backup of all user apps + system data. That way you have a backup if you need to restore. I've read a few threads about "I've rooted now what," you should do a search for one of those. As far as apps, here are one's I recommend: Roam Control (we get free roaming, so why not use Verizon's signal whenever you want. Just don't use all the time!), Wifi Tether (free wifi tethering with this app, it's awesome), Rom Toolbox (cool app with tonz of features for root users), Adfree (Blocks those pesky ads in some of the apps we use) those are just a few. If your feeling a little saucy, you might want to cruise over to the developers section and check out different roms that you can flash. Good luck jhawk, and welcome to the wonderful world of root!

Search de bloater in the development section. Its pretty awesome if you ask me

EVO questions (Noob here)

Noob alert, I'm new here, and I'm new to smart phones, I had the HTC Touch Diamond but it was defective to the point where the only thing I could do on it was browse the web and make phone calls...
I'm not that advanced when it comes to this phone since I just picked it up 2 days ago...
Question 1
I've searched around and saw there was ways to put apps on the SD card, and I'm sure just like a computer you can't run the apps off the SD card (unless you can?)
Well my issue with that is I've tried Astro but I'm dumb and can't figure it out.
Question 2
What's the reason and advantages of "rooting" my phone?
Question 3
Battery life... Battery goes dead in the matter of hours, I took it off the charger and within 10-20 minutes it was down to 89% battery life.
I've installed an app killer to save on processing, and save battery.
Set it to CDMA

Answer 1: as far as i know the only rom using apps 2 sd at the moment is Flipz, ive tried one or two others, but they werent using it and im not sure if you can just add it on top. So you CAN install apps and have them run off the SD card.
Answer 2: Reason, because you can. Advantage, many! There are a lot of GREAT developers on this forum who strive to make this phone what it should have been out of the box. Problems like battery issues, software glitches, addons, features, they do it all.
example:
Free wireless tether that sprint wants to charge you an additional 30 a month for. (its a big draw)
oh yeah and custom roms.
Answer 3: there are MANY threads on battery saving tips and the custom roms that are adding their own battery saving features.
there are a lot of threads that cover your questions, so just look around and READ EVERYTHING.
good luck.

I am only three weeks into this phone, but this is what I gather....rooting your phone allows you to install apps that are not in the market. Some of these apps help you make your phone run better.
- Controlling the CPU - this is an option on an app (forget the name) where you can set the CPU speeds for when your screen is off or many other situations. the responses to that app seem to increase battery life hugely. this is my leading reason for why I 'might' root.
- Cleaning up bloatware - i HATE HATE HATE bloatware and had it off my winmo phone in about three weeks it took to learn how to flash. now i need to learn how to root so i can get rid of the dumb sprint tm'd stuff
- Adding better bits to your OS - (i think this is root and not nand) but you can find better bits for your phone, like a different keyboard or better radio or things like that would work for you better than stock. this way you can do the little tweaks you want.
Lastly you can put new ROMs on your phone. Lots of em already for this phone. So far the Evo seems to have camera issues on the roms...not sure yet which roms have it figured and which are still working on it. But you can try out different roms and see if you like em.
(Hopefully if I got any of that wrong...the experienced ones will correct...but that is what this noob has gathered so far.)

This is not true. You don't have to have your phone rooted to install apps that are not in the market. By default, this option is disabled. To get apps into your Android phone you just have to go into the settings and enable the ability to install apps not in the market. Simple and already in original ROMs.
Now, there are some apps that take advantage of ROOT and have some special feature, but you can still install them on your phone if you do not have ROOT, but you will not be able to use the app's special feature.
As with all apps, some make your phone run better and some make it worse. Caveat emptor.
So again I'm new to this, where do I go to get these cool apps and such, and anyone have any tips and tricks for rooting, some of this stuff is above my head.
I'm sorry guys, I'm a moderator for a car forum so I understand having a noob show up asking alot of dumb questions that should be common knowledge in your circles LOL.
lol,
There is a program called simpleroot over in the dev forum that makes rooting a snap, and I think there are even some video tutorials
...And almost all the apps you would want are on the market
figure out what version you have, menu->settings->about phone->software information->build number
and then go to the read about rooting that version in the developer section
Ok so I read through the rooting instructions made by toast, seems easy enough.
But I also saw that it wipes your phone, meaning?
Am I going to have to re enter all my contacts, download all my apps again, and change all my setting back to the way I like it?
Also after rooting my phone, I won't have to like re activate it to make calls right, and after rooting it when I turn the phone on again for use what will I find? Is it going to look like it did when I first pulled it out of the box?
There's alot of things I don't understand about rooting and if someone would point me in the right direction that would be awesome, I've tried looking but keep coming across discussion threads, and instructions, no real explaination of what it does to my phone and what I can use it for.
Yes it will wipe everything pretty much. You should sync your contacts with google though so you dont have to worry about reloading those. After you are rooted you can use one of those 'root apps' called Titanium Backup and that will let you backup and restore everything.
You will not need to reactivate your phone. After you flash it will basically look like it did when it first came out of the box. Until you flash a custom rom, then some things may be a bit different (maybe custom themes, removed apk's, things like that.
Awesome, thanks for the info. I appreciate the hospitality guys!

I swapped my 1st EVO in a panic after running the 1st June 29 update. I now have a 0003 with .6 and would like to jump into the world of root. My qusetion is at this point should I do the OTA and then root or just root with the 1st toast method 1 and 2?
Also my laptop set up for dual boot so I can use either Ubuntu or win7. One over the other for diving in?
Thanks for any help.

Try to do your root as close to the lowest version you have, but it seems that people have gotten root even after the latest OTA update.
I don't think it matters in what OS you want to work in to root or mod your phone, but it tends to be a bit easier under Ubuntu. It was a pain in the ass to get the EVO recognized under Windows. The easy 1 click root is made to work under windows. I find that creating a kitchen (aka setup to make custom ROMs with apps/features added or removed) is easier in Linux. And doing development and building the OS from source is waaay easier under Ubuntu. I'm doing development, so it's a lot easier under Ubuntu.
Summary, somethings are easier in Windows and others easier in Ubuntu.

AH, well then. That would be why I threw my thoughts out there...for correction if needed. But the SetCPU thing needs root right? And that is the one I think I definitely want.
Thanks JJ you've been a savior!
You guys here have been awesome and very informative on the irc. I'll still need some guidance but you guys have helped a lot and didn't give me hell for being a noob.
Thanks again!

so I've rooted my OGP. Now what?

Rooted it today. First android phone I've ever owned (though been jailbreaking since 2009).
I installed Ttanium Backup, and i think i backed up my apps and data, but not exactly sure where to, as i don't have an SD card in it yet. If I backed up to the phone, I'm guessing that's mostly useless. But I'm new to this stuff so i don't really know.
So, now that i have root access, what apps should i be installing?
What stuff should i be uninstalling or freezing?
What cool things can i now do that i couldn't do yesterday?
Anything specific to the OGP that i should or should not do?

You can block ads, search adaway here on xda since Google recently rid the store of all ad blocking apps. You can use programs like sqlite editor to enable hotspot even if you're not subscribed to a plan that supports it. You can use xposed framework also here on xda (under our phones themes and apps) to apply themes to the phone. You can disable built in apps using titanium backup. Also, you should install Cwm under android development for our phone and make a nandroid backup in case you ever screw up your phone.
Best of all, you can install greenify root to make your battery last a lot longer. It hibernates apps for you that would normally run in the background.
When we have our bootloader unlocked is when the real fun will start though.

Thank you!
Couple more questions...I was able to do a search for adaway, and found it, but you mention (under our phones themes and apps), and could not find that. Is there a section that just has XDA Apps in it? All I was able to find was forums, and not repositories (don't know if that's the right word).
Basic newbie question...if an app is listed as being for Jellybean 4.1, can we use it even it was made for a Galaxy S3 for example? If it's Jellybean 4.1 is it good to go?
As to adaway...if you disable ads, will some programs refuse to run?
Is the hotspot app, safe for my phone bill?
If you "disable" apps using titanium backup, does it remove them from the phone, or just hide them? What is freezing an app? And if later you want to have them back (let's say for a trip to the cell store) are they readily returned to view?
I was under the impression (probably wrongly) that CWM at this point could brick our phone. Am I mistaken? And where does the nandroid backup get stored? Hopefully not on the phone...
I ask a lot of the above questions as being a new android user (2-weeks now), I'm clicking or checking out everything I see on the phone (and in the store(s) to learn about what it can do. I'm also installing a ton of apps that are new to me, and I've also gone to some non-Google Play stores to DL some stuff. I know that sooner or later I'm going to want to restore the phone to factory stock to get rid of conflicts, viruses (virii?), and anything that does not play well with other stuff. So, during this learning quest, I assume I'm going to frag the phone in some way, and will have the need to return it to stock (hopefully without needing to go back to the store)!!! I just want to have a bit of assurance that with everything I do, I can get back to stock.
Lastly, is there anything somewhat similar to iTunes that will make a restore a bit less time consuming. Is Titanium Backup what I"m searchnig for?
Wasn't aware of greenify root.. will give that one a go right now!

Thanks for mention greenify root, I install it. It's a hit!!
Now that I'm rooted (and installed some associated apps) I've noticed some laggy operation. When I'm on pretty much any of the home screens, and click on the app drawer icon, I'm brought to the page where I see "Apps", "Downloads", and "Widgets" at the top, but occasionally I have a blank screen below that. It stays blank for anywhere from one to three seconds and then the apps and folders appear. Sometimes they will show up instantly, but quite often there is a few second lag. The only things I've installed since rooting are Root Checker, Titanium Backup and Greenify. I'm not sure whether it is the root or the new apps, so I guess I can uninstall the three apps and see.
I also seem to be getting the circling "please wait" message more often than in the past.
Anybody else experiencing this? And does this sound like a root issue or an issue from one of the three apps?

I assume your battery drain is normal, or has not changed since the slowness has happened.
You have not stated if you rooted or custom ROM has been installed.
I found a few apps will do this time to time... depending on when they update. I always monitor my apps so troubling apps are always reverted back to their previous version.
You can use security 360 to monitor your tablet... It is a very good antivirus with some nice built in features. One is memory speed up and usage.
Basically it lets you know what apps are running in background, and releases them to speed up the tablet. I like it because it is like having 3 or 4 apps all into one and does not hog memory.
You can search the Q&A for battery drain if you have issues with battery as well ... there are many threads, so at least one will help. The lengthy threads have some good info near the end... as I try to help using simple methods that work with stock ROMs.

If not rooted, do so and you can eliminate apps that you don't use and that suck up RAM. You can as well move programs to an SD Card to increase the memory available.
Additionally, rooted or not you can go in and clean out the cache of all your apps. They build up over time.

SPB launcher??? It must have been rooted. I have a mostly stock ROM... never had speed issues, but it is all in the choice of apps I install.
Given that many apps are developer driven, and from my experience with developers here on the forum, makes me cautious about installing apps. I install only what I need and does the job cleanly. Sometimes the best apps are buggy when being updated to run 4.4.x, as I seen that a lot since Xmas. Though May has been a good start for the year... many apps have been sorted out, but still iffy as there are thousands of apps to choose from.
I places a thread, and an answer to battery, and apps disabling in a simple and minimalistic method. If anyone is interested, they can search for posts by me... they are within this year.

You should not have needed to uninstall SPB unless you already had a whole bunch of apps. I have 200+ Apps with no issues.
Also Clean Sweep is a nice app, but you can do this already without the added app. Open you Google search, look at the bottom left hand tab, open it and you can do the same thing.

[Q] We have root? Great! What can it do?

Guys, please. The point of my thread is NOT whether the root claim is a lie or not. I am asking some questions about what can be done with it regardless, so please, if anyone knows inform me, but don't post guessing games of whether it is real or not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?
Thanks!
There's safe strap which allows us to have custom roms.

did they get a safestrap to work?
I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.
We have root?
what proof?
Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.
Where is root?
Root has not been proven yet. Patience. Everyone is jumping the gun here.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....
There are also a few apps I would delete or freeze with Titanium Backup once we had that option... Turning them off is nice but I want the space back...

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.
root
Do you know if they release their root tool now? If they do, where is it?

The tool is not out. He's asking what can be done with root.
I want to delete all bloatware, install multi window for all apps, adblock, mxtube downloader, and xposed for 4.4.4

Good point I forgot about being able to add multi window for non supported apps... It would be really nice for Tapatalk to support it
Ooh multi-window on almost any app sounds awesome!
you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.
Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

Just an fyi: You can disable bloatware without having root by using @gatesjunior's Debloater utility. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294

I had no idea that existed or was possible without root. Great find!

Package Disabler Pro for the Note 7.

Has anyone tried to see what works with some bloatware disabled & what doesn't work? Personally I would like the iris scanner and samsung pay to be enabled and everything else disabled.
Yeah, it's working for me quite well

Glad to hear it,arguably the best feature available for any Samsung device, short of root/ROMs.
Hopefully it'll still work once Android 7.0 rolls out.

It will. They use Knox which is a product of Samsung.

I'm rather confused by this thread. Is the poster asking what will 'break' if you disabled all the bloatware? Or asking something else entirely? Cause you can disable everything that comes on any phone and it'll always work just fine.
And I have no idea what Android 7.0 would have to do with bloatware, or what KNOX would have to do with bloatware...

I can't speak for the O.P.,but,my guess is, as with me, just making sure that it works before purchasing the Note 7,especially for those of us with the Snapdragon powered versions that may have no other way to disable bloat.
JMHO, but, the Q&A regarding functionality of PDP, whatever they may be, are of merit & might as well have a thread addressing the subject.
Most realize you can disable the bloat, but,not everyone, including yours truly, understand exactly how it works & why only on Samsung devices.
The Knox tie-in makes sense to me, even without a full understanding of how it works.

KNOX doesn't make much sense to me, because that's just a security platform. It just makes sure you protected from being 'hacked' per say. As in like, it adds an extra layer of security over your phone so someone can't just pick it up and plug it into a computer to gain access to all of your stuff. Though thats only the very loosest of analogies.
But I have to ask what you exactly mean by the "not everyone understands exactly how it works and why only on Samsung devices". Do you mean as in why disabling works? or something else. Because you can disable the bloatware on any android phone so long as the carrier and manufacturer didn't lock the option out. Which most devices will let you do it now because of the whole 'you'll get sued for forcing users to use a specific thing without giving them a way out' (an example would be microsoft getting sued over the bundling of Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office with the earlier Windows OS's).
What I'm wondering is, based on the title of the thread after thinking about it some, does the OP mean an app that disables/uninstalls bloat? Because I'm sure there are plenty of apps out there that do it. But most I think require Root in order to do it properly and reliably. I use Sprint for my service, and its Sprint ID and such are a pain in the ass, and they can't just be 'disabled' easily even though there is the option to (every time you disable it, Sprint just re-installs it the next time you reboot the phone because it thinks it got uninstalled somehow). But to get it to disable properly on my Note 5, I had to install some random app that I think was called App Quarantine. It looked like a bio-hazard symbol for the icon. I haven't re-installed it since this last wipe I was forced to do, so I can't remember exactly lol. But it was the only one that would let me actually disable the Sprint ID stuff and not have it re-install all the time.

Yes it's an app in the Google Play Store that has the ability to disable literally anything on Samsung devices,WITHOUT ROOT, so, care must be taken to not get carried away & I recommend only disabling, not deleting, in the event of not being able to take an update otherwise.
Not everything can be disabled natively, so, that explains the appeal of the app.
If you used it, you'd see the tie-in with Knox........

Then that makes alot more sense. I originally just thought they were basically asking if there was an app to disable everything instead of having to do it manually. I've always just manually disabled everything cause its not that hard to do. Just find the troublesome things and hit that disable button lol. But if this can do it all in one quick swoop, then I'm all in =O I'll definitely be looking into it later today when my phone finally arrives...
Sprint screwed up my pre-order, and is sending me the wrong device, so I have to take it into a store to get it exchanged because they refused to cancel my pre-order or change the order at all even though I legitimately ordered the dang thing 2 minutes past midnight on the 3rd. So ontop of that, they also didn't ship the phone when they said they would, AND the put restrictions on my package. I normally have to physically go to a UPS location to pick up my packages cause the dumb driver will never deliver to my house... always states that they can't find my house even though its the ONLY house down the ONLY long driveway... heck you can SEE my house above the trees! But nope, the guy wont deliver. But because of the restrictions, UPS wont let me flag the package as 'hold for pickup' like usual, so I gotta stand at the end of my drive way for hours upon hours just to catch the UPS driver. Then I gotta drive all the way into town to HOPEFULLY exchange the phone for the Black Onyx variant that I was supposed to get...
Anyway, sorry for the ramble o-o; didn't realize it was that long XD

It's a nice tool to have, a powerful one.
Just a friendly piece of advice :
Read up on it before using, check the FAQs on the developers site if need be & go conservative at 1st if you're not familiar with what is safe to disable.
The app gives color-coded guidelines per each app on what is known to be safe to disable. You can go above and beyond that, but, mainly, just disable, do not delete anything & leave the stock keyboard alone.
You might be able to disable the stock launcher, provided you have another one installed, but, I'd leave it alone until you're certain one way or the other........

Lol I'd only disable the things I already know I need to disable. Like all the Sprint stuff. I leave the Samsung stuff alone cause I actually use alot of Samsung's things. But as for Sprint's stuff? All of that goes bye bye lol. Now that is assuming it doesn't somehow show things that you normally can't see from the applications manager. In which case then I wouldn't bother, cause I don't see much of a point lol.

Go with either one,the Pro+ has a hardware lockdown feature, otherwise, there two are identical:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpremium&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=en
I'm guessing Samsung still has a partnership w/Cheetah Mobile, which is one of the main reasons I like having this app,Package Disabler Pro,on-board to ward off the data mining/crapware/etc...
However,I'm not seeing anything in the apps, system or otherwise, that's jumping out & identifying itself as CheetahMobile/CleanMaster/etc.......
I'm guessing it's some/all of the apps identified w/the "Smart" moniker, but,I'm not 100% certain on that.
Anyone have an idea on which,if any,of the apps are actual CheetahMobile bloatware?
Thanks In Advance!
Using EZ Disabler here. Works well, but you gotta be careful using "disable bloat" part as it will turn off many useful things. I just went through and picked what i wanted. Very Easy to use though
Thanks for recommending Package Disabler Pro. I was worried Since not rooted. In past had always used TB . This worked Great!!

Why would you guys use an app for disabling stuff.
Since we're on xda, enable USB debugging and use pm (package manager) cmd from adb shell.
For instance: adb shell pm hide 'package'
There are other interesting options: list, install, uninstall.
