I have been reading up on the differences between ext2 and ext4. Apparently ext2 is faster and causes lesser wear on the SD card. Can I use an ext2 SD partition instead of ext4 without issues on CM 7.2?
Or is it really better to format ext4 on SD since CM uses it on internal memory?

hey fish,
if you want to use cyanogenmod 7 ( 7.1 / 7.2 ) u'll have to format your second partition to ext 4 format, another formats are not accepted.
Strange.
I've used an ext2 partition on CM 7.1 and currently using ext3 on CM7.2 dt app2sd is enabled and works...
Don't know about the speed and the wear (wear????) on the SD. Speed seems fine, I find apss load a bit faster from SD than phone memory. But then i have a class 10 card.
Hmm, I thought one of the reasons ext4 was developed was to make it faster than ext3, and ext3 is faster than ext2...
im using CM7.2 and my sdcard partition was ext2, and it doesnt matter
i can install darktremor, and anything,,
anybody experienced read/only 2nd ext4 partition?

Hey guys i have a question that no1 did answer in any Sense HD rom tread i posted, namely it's to do with the partitioning of the Sdcard for D2ext Roms'.Almost all dev's say that u need to partition it accordingly to fat32 (w/e GB) + ~1gb Ext4 + 0.1 GB Ext4 + 0.1Gb Swap... or similar.
now my question is...do i really need a Swap partition? and how to get the 2 ext4 partitions, cuz i do my formating via MiniTool Partition Wizard ,and it doesnt have an ext4 support...?
WEll there's a reason why i mentioned MiniTool and not Gparted...i can only use the lather ,that's why i asked. But ok.
Hi,
I have created a separate partition on my SD card for sd-ext and formatted it using pc (Ubuntu) to ext4 then ext3 then ext2 and used Recovery to format sd-ext but whilst apps2sd works, the app is stored on the main FAT32 partition rather than the sd-ext.
Is this still possible to do? I know that apps2sd working using the primary partition is still apps2sd but I would prefer them to use the sd-ext partition.
Many thanks.
p.s. all relevant info is in sig.
ok i moved from wildfire to desire
im not a noobie
but im liitle confused on a few things
Convert sdext to EXT3 wats this all about
do we not use the Darktremor Apps2SD 2.7.5.3 Beta 04 on this device
y do we have to have 2 ext4
etc
2gb fat32
1.5gb ext4
0.5gb ext
this is very strange
Partitioning SDcard
1st Partition: FAT32 - xyzMB
2nd Partition: EXT4 - 768MB
3rd Partition: EXT4 - 256MB
Remember 3rd partition is 1/3 of 2 Ext Partition for Batter Result.
It also work with 2 Partitions but less performance...
1) Place Cool_Rom.zip, flashable_data2ext.zip into SDcard.
2) Reboot in Recovery, toggle signature check off.
3) Flash Cool_Rom.zip. DO NOT REBOOT.
4) Flash flashable_data2ext.zip reboot and enjoy.

You news to understand a few things first.
1) ext is a type of partition that belongs to the Linux family
2) sdext is the ext partition on your SD card that you made.
3) we do use dark tremor.
I think you should do some more reading about your rom first. I don't get why there are 2 ext partition when you only need 1. I guess it's down to how it has been developed.

Well it's not that complicated. I don't know where you read that you needed 3 partitions on the sd-card, but usually 1 ext and 1 fat32 will do.
I only use 1 ext4 on my sd card the rest is fat32. maybe this is the way another rom works?
am using starburst data2sd
HI so just ur normal fat 32 n ext3 will do I read this in leedroid Rom I think I was very confused.
But if its the same then cool

Alright, I'm running darktremor a2sd with an ext4 partition in decks 1.2 and loving it. I'm thinking about messing with synergy and know that I would need an ext3 not ext4 partition to run dta2sd. In amon ra you can upgrade from ext2 to ext3 and 3 to 4. Is there a way to "downgrade" to ext3 without wiping and repartitioning?
Thank you in advance for any help.
Not in any recovery that we have available. I thought I read at one point that you can set SD partitions in Linux, but I don't know if you downgrade in that either.
ok, thanks, thats kind of what i thought.
another question for you or those in the know......i'm pretty sure since i converted my ext3 to ext4 and resetup dta2sd that my temperatures have been getting considerably hotter than before. people suggest that that ext4 isn't the best for the life of an sd card because of extra writing going on.....could this extra work also be contributing to higher temps?
I've got my SD partitioned to ext4 on CM7 with s2e and I've haven't noticed a temperature change, but it sounds possible.
Okay this is really driving me crazy. I have a bunch of custom ROMs on my system and none of them recognize the ext3 (or ext4) partitions on my SD card. I know for a fact that all of them support the sd-ext partitions. (Obviously, I am doing this for A2SD usability)
I have MIUI 1.7.1, CM 7.0.3 and HiApk (with sensefun) v1.1.
I tried creating an ext3 partition in the beginning of the SD card like this,
400MB ext3 (primary) | 1.6GB fat32 (primary)
I tried doing it the other way round too, like this ->
1.6GB fat32 (primary) | 400MB ext3 (primary)
Neither works. I am using GParted on my Linuxbox to do this. What is the problem ? and how do I solve it ?
I have read quite a bit on all this and none of it is straightforward. Can someone explain it to me, like a 10year old ?
Go to into recovery and partition your sd card there.

I can show you how... check my signature... there`s two youtube guides.
One with Gparted, and one with Minitools.
Enjoy.
how do you know it is not working?
the EXT doesnt add up storage space in 'internal storage' in android settings
you have to use Quick System Info from android market to check if a2sd+ is working
and also
the correct partition layout is FAT32 and then (after fat) EXT partition not the other way.
also try with 512mb ext partition.
To see the ext partition, you can either connect your phone to linux or use an explorer which has root access.

Thank you people ! Yup, got the partition working. Also, thanks to dzumagos for the tip on how to see the ext partition space.
