Flashing Roms - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I finally got mms working, but am bored with 2.2. I have been looking at Sense and ICS roms, but was wondering if i were to flash any rom, would i end up losing my configuration settings, or would they carry over? Right now im on Jiminy V

May have to reconfigure the apns to get mms working if you flash a rom

When you flash a new rom, you wipe everything, including data, meaning your phone will have nothing configured or setup, just like a brand new phone.

Lmao im on 2.2 because of Jiminy V rom lmao but i dont wanna be on it anymore

This is partially true. If you were to flash say.... Cm7.0.1 to Cm7.1, it doesn't wipe. It just updates. Or to better explain, if it's the same ROMs, usually you won't have to wipe. But from Froyo to Gingerbread I do believe it will wipe for you. Either way I would wipe anyway going from Froyo to GB. Most ROMs now have everything working. I'd personally recommend Decks 1.3d or CM7 #256 for AOSP. MikG or Kingdoms for Sense. I've heard good things about them. But I've never been a fan of Sense so.... Not much help there.

Technically true, however you should ALWAYS do a full wipe between flashing, even if you are flashing a rom update. I have always had problems when flashing an update and not wiping.

Some say yes, others no. Although it is safer to do it this way to avoid problems, i've never had issues. Hell, I've even went from Decks 1.3 to 1.3d with no problems

sorry..
Hi Guys.. Im new and i was wondering how to switch from rom to rom correctly.. i had one by one team that was sense 3.5 and tried to flash one that was sense 3.0.. i was able to do it but i had both roms almost.. i still had some of the wall papers and apk.. i tried looking all over and no luck.. if anyone can help please pm me or write a response THANK YOU!

[Q] CM6 installed...but NO OTHER ROM WILL!?!?!

So...
anything that is 2.2 (fresh, damage, even OTA, etc)
will install just fine...then
once it gets to the first screen lock before the setup...
it reboots! and roboots and reboots and reboots!
the ONLY 2.2 rom thats worked is CM6.
Sometimes...I'd like to have sense. i used to switch roms on my Hero.
But dammit none of em will work.
any suggestions?
my evo is rooted, s-off, with latest wimax, radio, pri, prl, etc.

did you try changing the bootloader to 0.93? or wiping the cache after install? or even going as far as to stock 2.1 and then update ota and then try to install a new one?

A boot loop in every custom ROM installed?

Hi, my Evo is a launch one (HW002). Ive been running Magnus ROM for the last month, but today I decided to give Virus's ROM a try, and after download and 3 wipes of the usual suspects (cache, dalvik, data) plus the Format All zip, I flashed my ROM but when I came back I was stuck on a boot loop. So I nand back to Magnus again, and then decide to flash Kings 2.3 Sense ROM, and also had a boot loop! This has never happened before, and I was able to nand back to Magnus..... is there something wrong with my phone, that is not letting me flash ANY new ROM at all???
Well I don't own eco but I think u should format data and stuff before flashing and go back to stock and start all over and also I would never try a rom with the name virus smh

What recovery are you using to flash the rom? Clockwork or Amon ra? What radios are you on? Which Virus rom were you trying to flash? I've never had trouble.trying.to boot any of his.roms, they are usually solid.

Hmm, that's odd. Are you sure the files you're trying to flash aren't corrupted? You said you did a full wipe, including a format all, so an improper wipe is ruled out. I unfortunately don't have a lot to suggest. I think if that was happening to me, I would first try reflashing my recovery, and then try wiping and flashing again.

I wish I had more to try suggesting for you. Its odd that both of the roms you tried flashing were sense based 2.3 roms. I wonder if you're phone doesn't like the kernel that comes cooked into those roms. I think virus's 2.3 rom uses the same kernel as the 2.3 king's rom. Perhaps after you flash the rom, you could power off the phone, take out the sd card, and try booting it without the sd card in it. I've heard of weird booting issues being caused by an issue with the sd card. It certainly couldn't hurt anything to try it, but I would think that if that was the issue, you'd have trouble booting any rom. I'd still try it though.

If his phone doesn't like the stock kernel, I'd recommend flashing a custom kernel in the same session, after wiping the cache and dalvik after he flashes the rom.

Right, which is definitely what I'd normally suggest. However, since he's trying to use the new Sense 2.3 roms, there arent really any custom kernels for those roms yet. Some people have reported success with Netarchy's, but it breaks the camera app. Other people reported loops with netarchy. Basically, there arent any custom kernels for any 2.3 GB + sense roms yet, so his kernel switching is limited. He could try another one, and may have it work, as some other people had reported. But his camera won't work!

I had already tried another ROM ( Myn's Warm Z) just to see if it is the kernels and the Sense 2.3 combination, but that didnt give me any problems at all. So Im guessing it is the kernel included in those ROMS. I will try your suggestions, though, just to see if they actually make a difference. Thanks for the kind help.

Damn. That sucks. I'm not sure what would be causing that. You wiped, you tried a different kernel, your radios and PRI are updated, you tried booting without the SD card in place. I'm not sure what'd send you to bootloops. Did you happen to try updating to the most recently leaked radio? The one that was in the dump from the leaked gingerbread rom? Although I doubt that'd make any difference, but you never know. I flashed it the other day, and it works just as good as all the other ones. I never really notice a major difference from changing radios. But the leaked one does work.

[Q] How do you fully wipe everything?

Wanna wipe my evo clean. Any help
Like unroot wipe or just plain ol fresh wipe? If regular wipe just go to recovery and select wipe all data, then wipe dalvik-cache one more time.
Go into recovery and wipe everything in the wipe menu except the SD card. Be sure to make a nandroid backup of your current setup before doing so just in case you want to revert back to what you had prior to wiping. Also, backup up your third party apps if you haven't already.

I just got my replacement phone sat, rooted and went straight back to my mikfroyo 4.5 rom. Yesterday I felt I needed a change and flashed fresh's gingerbread rom, which was too unstable for my liking so I flashed back to mikfroyo. I'm using the latest RA recovery, and I wipe everything 3x's between any flash. But for some reason, that gingerbread rom left something on my phone that had my display @ 80% and draining my battery. So I'm hoping a full full full wipe will solve my problem.
If you're trying out a 2.3 gingerbread sense rom and you have a 0004 evo now, then it will be plagued with the 100% brightness bug. I don't know if that's what happ maybe your replacement is a 0004 now? Fresh's GB rom will be unstable, all the GB sense roms are unstable since they're based on a "leak" or a "port".

[Q] ePST no Longer Accessible?

I used to be able to get into ePST with the ##778# short code. However, it no longer opens. I tried a lot of other things to get it going including re-installing the APK and wiping my caches, but it still won't come up. Anyone have any thoughts (short of punting)?
What rom are you on? I think this will only work on sense based framework roms. And even then I'm not sure if you can simply install it like a normal app, could be wrong tho.

ePST allows you to access the CDMA programming portion of your device. It's where tethering is unlocked, and you can break a whole lot of stuff in it.

Did it work when you were on the debloated rom before? Apps normally don't make it a habit of deleting themselves. My guess is its in the stock rom you used and when you flashed the debloated version it was removed as bloat. Have you tried pulling it from the stock rom and installing it in rmk's rom?

It actually worked in RMK's ROM... I'm planning to give the China Telecom 2.3.4 ROM that andybones made from the RUU posted by relay a go, and if it doesn't work, I'll do a full wipe and completely reinstall RMK's ROM.
Well, the China Telecom one was a bigger debacle (no working 3G), so I wiped everything, but back on the rooted stock and updated with RMK's patch and everything is golden.

[Q] Need help flashing a new rom

I've got my evo rooted, or at least I'm pretty sure I do.
It's currently on 2.3.3, with an H-boot version of 6.16.1002, the software version is 4.24.651.1, and CWM revolutionary 4.0.1.4.
I'm looking to flash a new rom that is very well functioning. I'm just wondering if I've got everything done right so far, and if there is an official version of Cyanogen out (I'm leery about nightlies), and how well it works. The only other rom I've seen that I'm really interested in is this
So have I got everything rooted properly, before I flash are there any thing I need to avoid, and precautions I need to take?

Cyanogenmod has stable releases at http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=supersonic&type=RC
I would always do a backup in recovery just in case...other than that you should be good to go.
Thanks, I found the latest stable release.
I've done my fair share of flashing on my Droid X, but just to make sure I don't wake up to bootloops for breakfast, what are the recommended install instructions for CM?
Also, does CM include a custom kernel, and do you recommend the latest stable, or the latest RC?
Wipe data 3x
Wipe cache 3x
Wipe dalvik 3x
Flash CM
Flash gapps?
(I don't remember if you need to flash gapps with CM)
Not sure if doing each 3x is really needed but that is how I was taught and have never had issues thus far, unless it was a specific rom related issue.
As for kernel since CM is AOSP, I would say it is custom since you can not use a sense kernel on an AOSP rom.
Hope this helps!

I've run into a very odd roadblock...
TiBu keeps freezing before i can even do anything. I've tried reinstalling, using an older version, and fixing permissions, and its still happening the moment I touch the screen.
This isn't too big of a problem as long as I can restore all my apps (including the numerous ones on the sd card) through my CWR backup... is this possible?
I think a lot of my issues I've been having are because I took an OTA update after rooting...
Ummm, yea. The 2 do not mix. Either keep it rooted and no OTAs, or keep it stock with OTA updates (if you choose them).
