Is there a way to modify the stock browser to ALWAYS open a new tab when you hit a link?
I know you can do it with a long press then select new tab, but I want it always open a new one.
Running an. A100 not rooted. Will wait a for ICS before I root

Unfortunately no I don't think the stock browser provides a way to change that setting. I would suggest you try using Dolphin HD. Once its installed you can change it to your default browser. It DOES have that feature and many others. It seems to be one of the must have apps for a tablet.

I'm not a huge fan of the layout that htc Sence uses for the browser. It also has less options than the stock due to the fact you can only uncheck Mobile View not set the user agent to desktop. Now before everyone tells me I can set the user agent to desktop, I am not talking about the ua string agent selection available from about:debug. On stock froyo browser if you set the user agent and ua string agent to desktop you can access Hulu and a ton of other flash sites. Anyone know if this mod is possible?
I also want to do this and made a thread about it but seems its not possible?
I made a thread about doing this too
Unfortunately I was unable to find a way to do it, BUT Vaelpak released a rom a couple days ago that is built off the HTC 2.2 but with AOSP apps that works great- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755074
I'm pulling it and gonna try to install
Edit:
Yeah vael actually has an asop folder just uninstalled default browser with root explorer and rebooted then installed his browser. Works great. Using fresh 3.1.0.1.

YET nothing new I downloaded is in there??
Also, finally I am trying to do the bookmarks as well..

I just bought a Defy and would like to experiment with it a bit. However, I have a few concerns:
1. I have Eclair and want to root using z4root. I have download ver.1.3.0. How safe is it to root and exactly what features will I get if I do?
2. Say I have rooted the phone, in case anything goes wrong can I revert back to the original? If yes, how? (Would be handy to know the steps beforehand)
3. When the official Froyo update is released, can I update even if it is rooted? If yes, after I update will the phone stay rooted?
4. Is it possible to install apps in a non-rooted phone using a PC? (I have Windows 7). If yes, please provide a link with an easy guide.
5. Is Step 4 possible for rooted phones?
These are for now. I am sure a lot will be added to the list.

Let me so how much I can help you,
1.) Using z4 root, should be completely safe. If it doesn't work it will just stp and you back out of it. You don't really get feature per sae, but you get get "admin" rights to your phone. The app superuser which is attatched the root gives you access to delete all the bloatware preloaded on the phone as well as capability to completely mod your phone. Androids are fun, but non compare to being rooted.
2.) If you use z4 root, I believe there is an unroot feature on there.
3.) You can definitely receive the official upgrade if you are rooted, the only way you wouldn't is if you flash a different rom, but even then as long as you flash back to stock you will get it. Altough, why wait when many of us are already running clean Froyo! By the time the official rolls out, we'll most likely be on 2.3
4.) when you say install apps from the pc, do you mean just using the .apk? If you find the apps online, you can simple connect your defy to the pc and drop that apk on your sd card and open the app from the phone, it will begin installation.
5. The way I just referred yes, I may be confused to the question.
If you root (which you should!) you should look into buying root explorer and Titanium Backup Pro from the market. These two things are a modders dream.
@jjp84: Thanks! So I guess I will root my cell after all!
6. To install .apk directly, does the phone needs to be rooted or can it be tried in a non-rooted phone?
7. Any good radio app which allows FM on loudspeaker?
8. How to get offline Google maps?
9. Any sexy compass application?
10. Is Motoblur with other launchers possible?
6. you can install .apk's on unrooted phones...just tick Settings/Applications/Unknown Sources. You'll need some kind of Explorer app to install 3rd party apk's. i.E. ASTRO or ES Explorer. Then copy apk to SD Card and install it with your preferred explorer.
9. I use Compass
10. I guess, yes. I try to avoid MotoBlur.
Sry not allowed to add links.
7) I recomand you this application, I use it and is brilliant:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903103
10) Yes, you can install any other "launcher" ... I tried LauncherPro (works great) and now I'm going with Go Launcher Ex
Thanks for the link to the FMRadio apk
I recommand Go Launcher too, i'm using it for 3 weeks on my defy and it works great!
cool will try it
Does your battery life reduce if you use a launcher from the market? Since it's an extra program that is constantly running.

Not really, it's performing the same functions the stock launcher is with less mess running around it.
Hi thr..Are you the same guy on iGyaan ?

6. Thanks. I just made a folder in the SD card and copied the downloaded APK files there. Then I just tapped on the file and voila, I was asked to install the app. It worked great! Dunno whether this was necessary, but I had USB debugging and Unknown sources checked.
9. Thanks, downloaded it!

JRDNEM_U3_2.52.0 - May I ask why do you need this?
-------------
11. If I root it and install Froyo, will I still have Motoblur? Am I gonna miss any functionality if I upgrade?
12. Is there any way to install apps with a QR code link from the PC? I don't have a data connection yet nor I have WiFi access
13. What are the best sites to download free APKs from? Please suggest some worthwhile free apps/games.
14. I want to use the Nexus One live wallpaper in my Defy. I got the APK as well and it installed successfully. However, when I try to launch it, I always get an error and the screen returns blank.
15. I have problem with my compass. I downloaded the Compass application and I was asked to calibrate. I tried that but it seemed to be little inaccurate. So I tried to calibrate the compass using phone settings. However, here the compass was stuck at red when I tried. I uninstalled compass and tried re-calibrating but it needed a reboot to get it to green. However, when I tried again, it again stayed at red. Had to reboot again. So it works after a first reboot and stops working if I try to re-calibrate. Any fixes?
App request
- FM radio with recording
- Slideshow widget for homescreen. Should be an option to scroll images without opening gallery.
- Offline calendar/reminder app
- Offline maps apk
- Will ask for more later
Can you run a quadrant benchmark and give us the scores? I mean how does the defy match up to high end droids in the benchmark score(which it shows at the end of the test) and how many FPS you get in the GPU benchmark inside that(the test in which graphics is tested using that first person shooter view test). If you dont know how to run quadrant benchmark, google it, its common.(Sorry if it is installed by default, i dont know about it, i am planning to buy an android phone soon so i am interested in defy) and what is the street price of defy? Since MRP is 18.5k INR, street price must be lesser. Thanks.
Abhi seems like Motorola released a newer version of the firmware for India. Because the 2.51 UK was pretty hard to root and z4root didnt work on it. We had to use super1click to root it.
Hmm. . i guess you will also find it unrootable for the moment.
In case you do root it then install the tenfar recovery apk and then make a backup of the stock rom you have before you do anything else to it. That way it might be of use in case you want to get back to original setup or if you decide to return the phone to the company when still under warranty.

Quadrant results: 1080 running Eclair. Only Nexus One running Froyo and Moto Droid X have better performance from the list.
I bought it for almost 19K INR, all incl. I am more than satisfied with my purchase

Is there another way??
Cuz my device isn't rooted, and no one around rooted it it!! As after install, I get a message of "Application not installed" :'(
device is MK802 Android Mini PC
thanks mate
The apk I uploaded needs to be either pushed with adb or moved to system/app with a root file explorer. Both require root, but if you don't have root then you can't remove it either... If you're looking for an ics like search box there's one free on the market.

Thank you for uploading that, it was exactly what i was looking for... I am rooted, and moved it to sys >apps but it doesnt work... it allows me to open in and type, and things auto populate, etc... but it doesnt ever actually search, or open the browser, etc after i hit enter... ??? and whenever i try to open settings, or click on anything in it, it freezes.. any ideas?
It is UNBELIEVABLY hard to find information in this version of google search... or even another google search ics apk for that matter. But on the ROM im using, the guy replaced google search with some other, hideous, quick search application and I would like to get rid of it and put google search back on, but am unable to download from google play, i am running on ICS 4.0.3.
Thanks alot!

Have you set the right permissions? Using root explorer or similar it should be: 1st row tick read, write: 2nd and 3rd row only read should be ticked. Screenshot's from my N5, but exactly the same settings.

Yes I did that back when i was trying to make it work... but then when i rebooted the device, it disappeared from the app list in sys > app and i couldnt find it anywhere else... so basically i just flashed Google Now (velvet.apk) onto it and i got that working fine, I realized that all i really had to do was delete my old Search app that the chef put on there and then my search button automatically made google now the default search. so i figured that one out atleast, that was bothering me hahaha... so i might be getting sick of this google now already though, it's laggy as hell and sometimes doesnt allow me to push on the links it provides, and is impossible to update.... so i might have to come back to this. in which case i shall post if i get it working on my device.
thanks for your help! keep on keepin on... hahaha
EDIT: you know what im gonna try to put it on again right now... haha. this google now thing aint gonna work out... haha. but maybe now that i deleted the other search it might work... we shall see *finger's crossed*
