I am looking for a GSM Galaxy Nexus kernel with these features:
tun for openvpn
nfs client + server
usbserial driver
init.d
zram
option to undervolt
underclock/overclock
USB drive / keyboard / mouse support
good battery life
very stable
I plan to run an ASOP 4.0.3 ROM. (Right now I'm rooted with stock 4.0.1 ROM.) Thanks
I believe franco kernel has all that, excellent kernel, gets my recommendation
Rom wise, I recommend AOKP

A little OT, but why are you looking for GSM kernels and ROMs when you have a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon? Unless you imported one before the official launch, the Verizon version is CDMA, not GSM.

GSM and CDMA use the same Kernel.

Interesting. For some reason the kernel devs have threads in the dev forums for both GSM and CDMA. It still begs the question of why the OP is asking for GSM specific, since it implies they're going to install a GSM ROM on a CDMA phone, and there are definitely differences between the two on many ROMs.

My Galaxy Nexus is not on Verizon. I have a Thunderbolt on Verizon. (My Verizon Galaxy Nexus had the signal/connection problem, so I returned it and went back to my Thunderbolt and got a GSM GN.)

franco kernel doesn't have usbserial, nfs or zram. But franco talked me out of zram. However, I still need a kernel with nfs and usbserial.
Any other recommendations? Thanks

Just wondering which kernel is currently offering the best battery life
Are you talking about GSM or LTE?
For LTE they all seem to be about the same except stock. That's a little worse.
Sorry I should of said, I am a GSM user
Franco's 12 works great

franco kernel
This needs a bump.
Trinity kernel. I'm using beta 65 at the moment, but most of his kernels are great for battery, especially if you undervolt and under clock the CPU.

Trinity 65c, 307/1036 stock voltage.
Very smooth and responcive.
CM9 kang powered by TRINITY
Running Franco kernel r180. I under clock it to 1036MHz, use Wi-Fi when possible (avoiding cdma/lte if I can, but obviously that's tough when I leave the house and am driving). I also keep brightness around 25%.

Definitely Trinity. Why did you not include it here? And why did you not include an "Other" option?

Because the poll was made in January and didn't need to be bumped, but someone thought we needed ANOTHER POLL ABOUT KERNELS that won't really help anyone.
CMPlus.
Hey guys
I'm experimenting with the Franco kernel (r89 currently) and I'm wondering if anyone has any info on whether one ROM or another is any more processor intensive than another and, if one is better, if anyone has any suggestions for battery friendly ROMs to run with Franco.
Cheers, Paul
GSM Galaxy Nexus
ROM - Cyanogen 9-20120312-NIGHTLY-maguro
Kernel - 3.0.8-franco.Kernel-nightly 89
Liquid gives me the most battery life.
And which AOKP? more details
Galaxy
Yeah, sorry, milestone 4, have you used it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
i cant comment on cm9, never tired it. im currently running milestone 4 and get great battery life. usually about 20 hours idle and 3 hours of screen to kill the stock battery. i dont have anything syncing except weather every 4 hours. No problems with kernel wakelocks.
Awesome, may try Milestone shortly. Is a kernel wakelock exactly what it sounds like, not waking from sleep?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
a wakelock keeps your phone from going to sleep properly when you turn off the screen, ie still using your cpu and battery. check out this thread about wakelocks. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462020
Will do, thanks for the info, learning more every day

For battery life check the 4.0.4 roms or liquidsmooth. better battery and performance too.

OP uses the GSM variant of the Galaxy Nexus. There are no 4.0.4 roms for the GSM Galaxy Nexus.

i m using gsm version too and i m running 4.0.4. There are 2 4.0.4 roms currently modaco and foxhound with aokp modifications.
i have no issues with cyanogenmod (4.0.3) and battery life, though i do run a custom kernel (fugumod's)
I use CM9/Franco-kernel and have better batterylife then stock (4.0.1) but I have also heard thet 4.0.4 should be better. I'm hoping we soon get the source for 4.0.4
Kernel
I need a Kernel that supports Wired Tether, any suggestions?
PS. The ones I saw in development did not have that specified whether or not it would work.
Radios
Quick Question, what are the best radios so far (CDMA)?
Charlotte NC area.
Thanks so much guys.
All kernels should support it if built from the 3.0.8 kernel source. Just make sure you have a rom that supports/unlocks it.

I'm running AOKP toro milestone 4. Is that Rom compatible?
I understand that roms are not fully compatible across different Galaxy Nexus variations, but are kernels? I would love to try some of the Verizon kernels.
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Nexus CDMA using XDA
From what I understand, yes.
Should be fine. The glados kernel is cross compatible with the sprint nexus so I would say yes.

most are. i know that trinity, glados, and franco kernels are. but it all depends on each developer to make it compatible across all the different galaxy nexus variations.
All kernels should be compatible across all devices. I compiled 3 boot.img files, one for maguro, one for toro, and one for toroplus/torospr and all three had the same md5. The only issue you may run into would be a kernel that isn't compatible with a ROM. The stock AOSP kernel doesn't seem to work on CM9 due to some slight changes to the ramdisk, but a CM9 kernel should work fine on stock, and everything else from what I've seen.
hey guys,
I'm looking for a few kernels that, for some reason or another I can't find no matter how hard I look.
maybe you guys could help?
Matr1x kernel
Bricked kernel
Hells core kernel
and last but not least Semaphore kernel.
I'm looking for the latest releases for JB 4.3
Thanks!
Are you on the right sub-forum?

nope, I have a galaxy nexus but cant find these kernels. I can only find about 5 descent kernels for the GNex.
is there a kernel directory or something? how to I find them? the N4 has way more kernels than the GNex for some reason.

Right - N4 is Qualcomm powered.
You can't expect every Nexus phone to get decent kernel development, especially since the GNex is manufactured by Samsung and uses OMAP.

I dont see how that should matter. a chip is a chip... Qualcomm or not.

Example: Samsung b!tches close their Exynos sources, hence much less custom kernels for their flagships.
Having both a Nexus moniker AND a CPU whose manufacturer is more open-sourced definitely helps N4 gets quick feature/ROM backports from N5 and similar architecture'd phones.
Enough N4 chats.

He already said that almost every kernel contains OC and maybe UV tweaks that'll impact on performance and battery. Experiment yourself to see which's fit. I love Franco best (because it has a dedicated controller app!)

man... ive tried an absolute ton of kernels (Overclocking, Undervolting, Underclocking ect.) and I cant pull more than 3 hours of screen on time.
Like, 3 hours is absolute maximum.
time for an extended battery :/

Really there is no best ROM or kernel. Every dev works very hard. Wouldn't it be harsh to say that his work is worse than another devs work? Apart from that. It is all personal prefrence. Its just what you like.. So try them and see which one suits you.
