The won't charge extra if you get a tethering plan. That is true. If you try to tether without a plan you will be greeted with a "You don't have a tethering plan. Click here to add one." I tried and tried to get around it. The only way was to freeze the app you are looking for. You need to freeze the tethering manager app. Here is a step by step for rooted phones. http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-h...otspot-on-rooted-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/

But starting on the 25th, if you have an unlimited data plan you won't be greeted by that message and so will not need to pay extra for tethering.

edited to add - ah, you have to ask tmobile to get the tethered plan for free with your unlimited data plan.

Nice. Tthanks.

There is no tethering restriction with prepaid plans. Also, using tethering manager results in an extra prompt while activating the wifi hotspot..... deleting tethering manager removes the extra prompt.

Turns out that if you have an unlimited data plan, starting on the 25th, you have to ask tmobile to activate the tethering.

at&t and VZW are block tethering apps from android market... Will Sprint Also?

BIG RED (Verizon) and BIG BLUE (ATT) are now banning tethering apps from the android market. Will they also ban it from the amazon market also? And will Sprint follow the leader?
Doesn't really matter if they do or not. Just download the .apk and install it if you want it.
I knew it was a matter of time and of course, Sprint has already been discussing the issue. The part I don't like, is about the cell provider auto adding the plan to your monthly bill when they catch you tethering, which I don't see how they can do if CarrierIQ is removed. Unless they drive around neighborhoods in a van, connecting tether frequencies to your address. Lol

As long as the apps are still in the market, you can just get a modded market to see and download the apps.

yeah i am currently using stock. I was using midnight but he stopped development so i went to stock for a little bit. I think that we should be able to use our data in anyway we want to. But the carriers see tethering as a gold mine. I say as a compromise how about this data plans....
plan 1: tethering allowed but speed capped at 1megabit...
plan 2: unlimited Thehering Allowed and unlimited data and only $15 more per month speed capped at 3megabit
plan 3: super data plan same as plan 2 but has full wimax speeds and is free if you get the $99 unlimited everything plan.

How about unlimited data plan still means unlimited data? I am already paying an extra $10 a month for.....? I wasn't paying that with the Palm Pre or Instinct. All could get on the web. The only reason I tether is to see the damn websites and use a grown up keyboard. Should not have to pay another $30 a month for that.

The extra $10 is not because of the data at all. The charge is because you have a "smart phone". This would be like when you purchase a car and the state says you have to pay a gas guzzler tax because your car only get 25mpg and not 35mpg. What sprint should do is whay verizon is doing with the $50 prepaid unlimited plan for features phone. Sprint says feature phones prices per month is this and for smart phones they are this....
on the plus side id you are a sprint shareholder then this may help the bottom line by finding ways to charge more for the same services. I think next sprint will increase the fee for tables to $20 as it is an uber device with a screen larger then 4". They can also charge $15 for any smart phone with a 4" or larger screen. And if you phone has a battery that is not environmentally recycled then sprint can also charge you $10 per month for that...

HaHa! Yes if you have a larger screen you must be using larger data. Their first explanation for the $10 was the higher data use with this super phone. Now they just stumble when you call them on that and say it is for having a premium phone....I paid that cost when I bought the phone. It is more like buying a sports car outright and still having to pay the dealer a monthly fee for it being a sports car.
Do you BONSAI?

Why not root your phone and tether? Not hard.
Use FoxFi if you don't want to root.. you'll have to download the apk HERE.
At&t won't let you download from the market.

Foxfi doesnt show up in market for me on ATT, However verizon did get slapped by the FCC for blocking tethering apps because a deal they had with the FCC for the portion of networks they use, so maybe ATT will copy them since the two compainies copy eachother all the time anyway.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/...ettles-with-fcc-for-1/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter
I personally don't tether. But i know a lot of people that do, some pay for the service from att, some don't. if att is forced to cease blocking tether apps it would almost guarantee a severe enforcement of their policy on"illegal"tethering.
I also wanted to use Foxfi before I rooted, but I couldn't find it in the market. I'm now rooted, so I used the CWM " Tether and Cell Standby Fix" from the MODs section from this thread. It works fine, but I'd be nice if there was a home screen shortcut to enable/disable it quickly.
Hate to go off topic, but in my Captivate I use MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile market. This allow me to install Foxfi directly from the Android market from my rooted AT&T Captivate. I can not get MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile Market on the SGS3. Is there a replacement or fix for MarketAccess or a hack to emulate the T-Mobile Market from an AT&T SGS3?
So if i use foxfi att wont charge me for tethering right?
I have unlimited data on virgin in Canada but my plan does not include tethering and they charge a high rate per mb for tether usage, if i installed a custom rom that enabled tethering would they charge me? they dont when i use apps like clockworkmod tether
Recent at&t customer here, pardon my ignorance...but I'm on the 5gb plan and I thought that it included tethering? Is this not true for all the plans? Seems to me if you pay for 2gb 5gb or a million GB you should be able to use it however you please......
The 5gb plan on ATT does not include tethering unless you pay for it which is an extra $40/month last I checked. If you use tethering apps with ATT and you dont pay for the plan they will send you a test and email stating if you dont stop that they will add the tethering plan to your account automatically.
They are quick on catching you now too. Last time I tethered I used about 200mb of data and I got the email, took a week or so after to get it and yes they can detect you. There are ways to not be detected but they usually can.
About the guy saying you should be able to use it how you want is so true. Verizon just lost a class action lawsuit over this and now have to allow tether apps (which are not illegal) because we should beable to use our data and apps anyway we want without our carrier telling us how. We did buy our devices and pay for the service.
So maybe now other carriers will back off so they dont get sued. Because it was a nice chunk of change Verizon had to let go.
The 5GB plan does include tethering. Using the WiFi hotspot now mad posting this.

Unless they've changed their policy in the last two weeks the AT&T 5GB plan does NOT include tethering. I'm a ex-AT&T IT employee with their now defunct unlimited data plan still in effect as they cannot pull it from me. On my old old rooted and ROM'd Samsung Captivate i'd tether constantly without issue. Since I got the Galaxy S3 (a month ago & still stock) I tried it two weeks ago and the message came up telling me to call AT&T. I called and was told it's a $50 add-on data plan for hotspotting. Hell with that, FoxFi it is, let them tell me I can't do it. it's my data plan and it's unlimited no matter how I use it.

Can I tether ATT without rooting?

Is there any way to enable tethering (without tethering plan) on an ATT S3 without rooting?
Thanks,

If you are on AT&T's new mobile data share plans (or if you switch to it) then yes, you can tether for free and it will count against whatever data plan you chose (or choose) with mobile share. I switched my phones over on Thursday. I have a S3, and an iPhone 4s. We went with the 6 gig plan. All plans come with unlimited talk and text to any number, as well as wireless hotspot and tethering (wifi and USB), with no additional setup fees.
Both my phones share the 6 gigs and those gigs can be used however I choose.

... you DO know that tethering on an unlimited plan also runs the risk of being FORCED onto a different plan, correct?
AT&T seems to be REALLY good at knowing when your tethering. I never had the "unlimited" plan on AT&T to begin with (but realistically, it really isnt unlimited anymore anyways), so I was very happy to see the new mobile share plans that allow me to use my tethering as part of the data I'm already paying them for every month.

I used to tether on my old phone (iPhone) with ATT and one day I got a text saying basically to stop tethering or they would put me into a capped data plan. I continued tethering until I got another text saying they were moving me into a data plan. I called ATT and was polite and played dumb, the girl said she would remove that "flag" from my account since I called. I stopped tethering at that point. Now I just want to see if it can be done on my S3, I will prolly just go with a data plan at some point and tether properly with ATT

Easy. Tethering forces additional hop. Also data usage when on another tethered device has different characteristics vs. data usage on the device.

I have a 3 gigabytes plan. If I do tethering, would at&t give me a hard time? So far my impression is that at&t only cares if it's from an unlimited data plan. Could somebody give me some clue?
Your best bet would be to call and ask only takes a few minutes

Tethering is included with data bucket plans. They'd of course want you to pay for tethering on your plan which imo is ridiculous, but that's the way it is. With unlimited data plans, tethering from At&t isn't even an option. They won't even let you pay monthly for it without giving up your unlimited plan.
You have to have the 5gb plan or mobile share plan if you wanna tether. You cant call and ask them to let you tether on a 3gb plan. If that was the case att would not have a dedicated tethering plan.

Tethering isn't allowed. Unless ya paying for it!!
But if your on a custom Rom. And it unlocked the tethering portion. Which most Rom's give you tethering capabilities anyhow.
With that being said: If you use it every now & then, and don't use big amounts of data then I'm quite sure they won't even notice you.
I'm on a grandfathered plan and use it, every now & then. When traveling mostly or when I have no internet access..

We have a ten gig plan through at&t and I can use the mobile hotspot app to tether. AT&T does not care if I tether and they would like for me to go over my ten gigs so they can charge me extra. They do not allow the folks who are grandfathered into unlimited data because they do not make enough money off of them to allow it. I do not know about the 3 gig plan.
Is there a way to hide your data? I've used ssh tunnel while tethering and I don't think there was a problem.
Xbox doesn't run natively on android phones, however web browsing does

So of course like many people with a GS2 on here I decided I wanted to tether but these last of couple of days have been very odd.
My tethering is no longer blocked for some strange reason and I am free to use tethering as I please this was not the case before.
How is this possible that the stock tethering on CM9.1 has failed all this time yet now it magically works I installed many steam updates and did about 20 speedtests to cause it to fail or disconnect me. It did neither. So I would like to know if this is an isolated incident or not,
