So I rooted my brothers evo about a week ago
But now I see there's a new update for this phon so I want him to get the ota update
I do have a backup of his stock rom
So I can easily return to stock
But that won't remove the root so does anyone know if the update will work if the phone is rooted but on stock rom..? If not then can anyone lead me to a thread that I can unroot the phone but not flash any stock roms and just keep mine so I'm just looking for a simple unroot that's all and only if the update will not work with the phone being rooted
Thanks in advance for any help anyone gives me

Heres the revolutionary root/unroot guide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245649
as far as i know you can't get an OTA being rooted, unless the developer of the rom implements it into an update for his/her rom.
Edit:Heres the newest stock rom,Brad released the latest OTA rom .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455340

Hi, I was wondering if there was any way to flash the official ota for Gingerbread after it comes out. Since I'm am temp rooted I will miss the official ota. I already know there are leaked versions of gingerbread but I would rather wait for the official release.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
well if you ar temp rooted, you might as well finish and perm-root . BUT, you would have to revert back to stock when it does get officially released. itll either brick your phone if you try to update to it, or itll just unroot your phone. you might as well just flash Rmk40's Glite which is the rooted stock rom and you can overclock, and itll be alot faster.
Stock vs Rooted
i would say go with rmk's as well. But I'm not really a fan of stock gingerbread.
Just root already. You won't be sorry.
If you intend on still being able to temp root, or root for that matter, you don't want to install the OTA. Its not rootable, temp or perm, and would need to be downgraded to an older ROM in order to do so.
Once the ota come I won't care about rooting, but will someone post the official ota on xda when it come out?

It's a leaked ota

I dont beleive that there is a recovery that is sticking yet. When I flashed it I did not have root permission. Went back to L2, JB was to laggy. Ofcourse it is only a patch.
how did you do it? i lost root when i tried it. where did you find the rooted version of T999UVDLH3?

Wildchld just release a rom with jb patch. I go grab it in the dev section.

So when this ota update hits, it's ok to update right? Devs give the ok, and we'll be able to attain root even after downloading the ota jelly bean update?

If when the official update is released and you want the official ota you can Odin back to stock and grab it but I suggest you wait it out till devs get a rom you can flash without the worries of losing root. Being able to be rooted after jb ota is still to be determined cuz well no one has it yet.

It'll be easy. The beauty of an Odin flash able recovery means no matter what we will have a custom recovery. I rooted the leak jb build by flashing cwm in Odin. I unchecked reboot so I could pull the battery and key combo into recovery. If you let it boot after Odin recovery you have to Odin recovery again cus it'll be overwritten. When you get into recovery just flash superuser and binary and you'll have root.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Download the official Superuser binary+app at: "h tt p:/ /a n droid su.c om/ sup eru ser/" (no spaces), and flash it in your recovery.
If your recovery is not working (due to the update) or whatever, then just reflash it using odin or heimdall. flash either CMW or TWRP:
"ht tp ://ww w.cl ockw orkmo d.co m/ro mma nager/"
"ht tp: //t eamw .i n /pro ject/t wrp2 /106"
^ NO SPACES (XDA not allowing me to post links before 10 posts)
I think the odin links are pretty famous by now, so I won't bother to post them.

Ok i have a question, if im rooted and lets say an update comes out for jellybean. Am i able to just uprade firmware or do i have to unroot and go to stock first?
Or just wait for someone to make a cwm flashable zip that's already rooted.

If you are rooted and running stock, then you will be ok. If you are rooted and on a custom ROM then just flash the stock rom. Or what Teo says

hey OP have you seen the answers given to you by fellow members? If not when you do be so kind as to thank them for taking time out to help... not saying you were not going to but....
If you want to try a JB rom try AOKP 9/13 or 9/18 both running pretty damn good most
Enjoy!
AOKP / JellyBean

I have to agree with Playya. I'm running AOKP Build 3 and have no issues at all. It's a great JB ROM.
If you flash that, you may need to set your governor to "Interactive" and Scheduler to "Deadline." I did to avoid some constant crashes.

Since ATT claims that they will be doing an OTA update tomorrow I'm wondering what will happen to my rooted phone. Do I install the update? Will it try and automatically install the update itself? If it does what will happen to my phone. I'm currently on the latest version of Clean ROM. Thanks for all the help in advance!
I am kinda curious about this also. I am just rooted tho , with the exploit method. No custom roms or anything. I unchecked the options and rebooted to get phone state normal and then checked for updates , but didn't find anything.

I am also rooted and using CleanRom 3.5. I am sure the build date for the current CleanRom will be newer than the AT&T build date supposedly coming today. I guess I won't be updating since they are only adding multiview and I already have it via CleanRom. When the day comes that 4.1.2 is pushed out by AT&T and an update is needed, will I need to unroot my phone to get that update or is there another method?
If you have a custom recovery and things frozen or deleted with titanium backup you must undo all of that and get a stock recovery and then use ota root keeper to temporarily hide the root and you should be ok

Ahhh, Ok. Thanks!
I'm not sure why anyone would want to go back to stock if you have a custom rom already installed. Custom roms will always be a step or 2 ahead of the carrier releases. This current at&t update is only for multi window and whatever updates are released in the future are likely going to be available via custom roms long before the official carrier release anyway.

I was rooted, running CWM, and CleanROM 3.5. I went into recovery and flashed the stock rom and it automatically downloaded and installed the update even though i had a custom recovery. After the update was complete I lost root and had stock recovery. The official ATT 4.1.2 update is way slower than CleanROM 3.5 so Im rooting and flashing back. Also cant customize toggles like the international 4.1.2.

Interesting. I am running root stock with twrp. I removed root, but still have custom recovery (twrp). Flashing the update fails due to ro.secure==1 or something.
Did you do anything at all to prep for the update, maybe ta or hide root?

Won't brick phone, but you will lose root. There are ways around this... root keeping apps. But if you want to know the best way around it, flash a custom ROM.
What is an easy method to completely unroot my phone?
Full unroot in supersu. Note that if your system status says modified, you cannot get the ota.
Its honestly not worth the trouble imo. We could all be enjoying the next update for a whole month before you ever get it via ota. Just wait till its released and Odin flash the new firmware.
