darktremors apps2sd - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was wondering if this script can be used on MIUI on our phones. I know that we were able to run it on the EVO4G but I'm afraid to try it. Any thoughts?

I guess nobody here came from an EVO4G...and those that did don't think its necessary for this phone.

I used it on my EVO but don't see any need for it on this phone, not yet anyway.

Yeah, everyone keeps saying that but I want to try it anyway.

+1. That thing was the greatest thing since sliced bread on my EVO. No more worries about app storage space at all. However with this phone, I've got more apps than I know what to do with and haven't used up 1/2 the space available (840 MB used, 1.1 GB available) for apps so I'm definitely in the "don't think it's necessary camp".

Why should I root my phone?

Is there a reason for me to root? Everyone is talking greek to me I am a complete noob when it comes to this. I have tethered my phone with no problems, I'm not really interested in overclocking. So is there any reason at all I would want to go through the headache of trying to figure all this stuff out and root my phone?
One of the major reasons I root is so I can use custom roms, edited versions of the stock os, that are modified to include different features and improve the speed of the device, others love rooting for the ability to customize anything you want to.

While all those are valid, none of those exist; and even the current Root is not NAND write enabled.
After seeing all the problems in rooting combined with threads regarding phones REALLY acting up after, I would say ... don't root unless and until you see a custom ROM you like.
Personally, anything Rooting would get me, FroYo will get me too; and while a faster custom FroYo would get my attention; Verizon WILL release Froyo in 2010 at some point. I'll be waiting.

Just don't hold your breath! On the WinMo side, at least, they're a few quarters behind the OS update schedule, mainly thanks to HTC's Sense(less)UI. Since we have a layer of HTC stuff on top of Android, you can expect to wait just as long for 2.2.

I'd bet we'll have a FroYo port waaay before VZ pushes it out over the air. I think (!) HTC's Software Quality Assurance is more thorough (and slower than) Google's Quality Assurance, or at least Google would rather push an update out with fewer features whereas HTC will wait for all features to work. AFAIK, VZ has very little to add or subtract to the mix -- how long does it take to recompile against a new framework and kernel?

I miss messing with stuff... i came from a G1 were i was running a different rom every 3 days it seemed like.. i was constantly messing with things with it just for ****s and giggles
I do feel really locked down with the incredible in knowing that i cant really mess with anything, the only thing ive been able to change is the boot screen and put the nexus animation on that instead of the stupid verizon symbol.
Too be honest though nothings even wrong with my phone whatsoever... the OS is perfectly fine and does everything i want it too, i cant really complain about anything with the software on it now... its just that want to customize thats driving my desire to root.. moreso then any actual need as everything works fine

+1. There is not much that comes to mind with regard to things I'd like to improve with the DI. For example, the phone has more app storage than I could ever use, so there is no need for A2SD. And the processing speed is satisfying, so gaining OC'd kernel isn't a big priority. However, I simply miss being able to **** around with and compare various ROM's and mods, even if they are unneccessary on this device.
I have no real reason to root just yet, well then again I'm totally new to android, so I'm not exactly sure what rooting entails. All I want is stock 2.2 froyo, the day that is ported over to our phone is the day I will be rooted.
Can't wait..

I have 4gb free on my SD card but running out of memory. How to move stuff to SD?

Hey all,
I have loads of space on my SD card but an already finding out that I'm running out of phone memory. I don't think I have that many apps installed but can't seen to move a lot of them to the SD card.
How can I do this or make more space no the phone?

Can only be done with a custom ROM using A2SD+
Wow. I'm a little new to Android, but that seems like a big oversight by Google, or is this a restriction imposed by HTC?
not really HTC. up to app developers to update their apps to allow apps2sd. even then not all of the app will be moved.
tbh wanting to install more apps is the main reason many of us root in the first place. that and many other goodies too!
custom rom with at least A2SD+ is the way to go!

I have been holding out for as long as possible as the phone is a works unit, but not only that, its from Orange. As there is no Orange ROM for the Desire available, I have no real way of going back to a near stock condition in case the phone need to be returned.
However, I didn't realise that even something like this would be a limitation of the stock ROM

There is a bunch of alternatives to A2SD like data2ext or data2sd
StarBurst ROM is even including DATA2SD With up to 2GB of storage!

yes quite annoying. i take back a little bit what i said before about htc, sort of their fault too for providing minimal app storage space.
when u say from orange i take it u mean orange branded right? not an expert, but i thought there would be an orange rom out there if they pushed out an update. mayb search around a bit more?

Yep, Orange Branded. I have swapped over ROMs on a previous Windows phone, but that was a personal phone. Apparently ther isn't an Orange ROM release as it has never been leaked. I must say that I have read then several times now and have yet to see anything to the contrary after a couple of months of looking. Of course, I would be happy the be wrong here.

hmm, that is annoying if it is true, would have thought someone would have leaked it somewhere! slightly annoying combo of branded and work phone too...
i take it you only want the rom as a 'just in case'? i found it v scary at first but there r so many ppl and forums to deal with virtually every problem. the chances of bricking it r small if u follow instructions. if you've been looking for a couple of months then by the sounds of it u would like to go thru with this, and i bet u've probably memorised how to do the steps in your head by now.
to be fair i thought i bricked my phone after trying to flash my first rom. scared the crap out of me. but that turned out to be a bad sd card, nothing wrong with my method as i was following the steps exactly. i did use the RUU to start again so it did come in handy...
Space to me is always and issue
Root to increase space..and of course to miui...I just upgraded from a 16gb to a 32gb. Be warned..once you root and start installing Rome you may get addicted.

Lol android development section is getting raided by the same question over and over but its ok i like answering this question. We cant port it over until we get a gingersense leak for our incredible and take the kernel from that to actually get sense 3.0 to boot up because up until now we havent booted sense 3.0 or gingersense on our device.

Of course there is just look at the evo they basically sense 3.0 with everything working except some apps resized but they have the important parts like rosie and lockscreen. We are a little late in the race but once we get our Gingersense leak for the droid incredible i am certain that our devs will have a port for us on that very same day.
Look at it this way, the EVO guys are doing all of our Dev's hardest work for them. 3.0 has been a royal PITA for them, but supposedly Virus has a 99.9% work ROM that he's going to upload at some point tonight.
I cant wait for sense 4.5. Gonna be sick!
I read it somewhere it cant because the file size is too large. I don't know, I just read it somewhere.

Indeed, the Incredible's internal ROM is too small to accommodate Sense 3.0; however, with the advent of things like DualRom, we are able to partition emmc as bootable media, therefore granting 6 gigs of space for any ROM.

We can also shift around partition sizes and make system bigger and take here and there from the other partitions for those who don't want to lose emmc... I've already done it but nobody decided on how much space they needed on system.

Awesome, this is good news. I always thought it would be possible and that all we were waiting on was a version of GB that already had the sense framework overlaid.

All you have to do is delete the partition table and remake the partitions with a program such as fdisk. AFAIK the internal memory is just one (or two) flash chips that are partitioned off and mounted to separate directories. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that's all you have to do.
i tried playing around a bit last night with my doubleshot (espresso 3.0) port on the tbolt, but even symlinking stuff back to /system was giving me issues. granted i didnt try too hard, i didnt have too much time.
who else is legitimately working on it? ive got that and the sensation working on the tbolt, and i have most of the sensation (normal 3.0) resized and working, and itd be easy to get data for the inc, you could have a DD pretty easily. Id like to see what a group of us could come up with

Virus' was 353 on the EVO. He's gotten a hell of a lot working, still probably 3 or 4 releases away from being a daily ROM but for being something that no one said would work, it's a pretty big accomplishment.
BTW, they're running DTA2SD to get around the size issue cause by partitioning the system file that big.

How exactly did you get it to boot on the T-bolt. I've been hearing that you basically need a GB Sense leak and kernel, or to build a kernel from scratch.

Hi all
Just got an Inc 2. why else would I be posting here ,,,, anyhow I gotta have root mainly just to remove bloat, really undecided on which way though, HTC unlock or a full S off through the downgrade revolutionary method, I'm not realy a flashaholic, I would like to be able to use set CPU or the likes, for battery savings and maybe a little overclocking, phone seems pretty responsive if you ask me just coming from an Eris but I haven't loaded any apps on it yet either, heck I haven't even activated it yet (guess it's a little hard to let Ginger go ) I'd post a screen shot of her but she's a little shy.
So what's everyone thoughts on this if you had just recieved a brand new Incredible 2, with 2.3.4 Gingerbread, 5.10.605.9, 2.6.35.9 kernel; and now the news of Official ICS update soon to be released which way would you go to root HTC or S off?
Can you overclock/undervolt stock kernel?
Is it possible to flash a different kernel?
Any and all input on this will be greatly appriciated, Thanks In Advance

You're gonna wanna downgrade and s-off. It's easier to flash ROMs, also you can flash radios that way. It's a slightly longer process to do so, but its worth not spending extra time when flashing ROMs. Mainly because you have to flash the kernel in fastboot if you use HTC unlock.

It doesn't. It downgrades the hboot version. Now, if you s-off, you can flash any radio you wish. The recommended one is either the latest .1111 or .0722.

Yes I have the latest.1111 with 2.3.4 Gingerbread, 5.10.605.9, kernel 2.6.35.9, it downgrades more than just the hboot doesn't it? I thought it downgraded the whole OS.
It will put you back to 2.2 or 2.3 I think but it does not affect radio. You van then flaws one of the rooms based off the latest stock update ( what you have) if that's what you want. Also, you can't oc stock kernel, use dresdills 21. Also if u use the HTC method you are guaranteed void warranty cause they know what you done. If you use other method you can revert to completely stock if you need too and they will never know if you need to because of hardware issues. Yes I've heard about that kernel, I'm pretty sure that once you root they know it cause all there tracking, or most of there tracking software goes offline for them, and they know that the only reason, for the most part, that the phone dissapeared is root. I thought htc unlock still gave you a warranty although more limitted. And yes I learned from the Eris when the phone is on the charger be extra extra carefull with it, even if it meens don't touch it.
Root doesn't take out anything, and I'm not sure what tracking your referring to anyways. The only way anything would be took out is if you do it, or the rom you install does. If they know you done it, and you think it may be more limited, that's just a way of saying now we have a reason to deny you anytime we feel like it. But if your set on that, do it, not gonna argue its your phone could care less, you wanted opinions you got it, either way good luck...

I never said that root in and of itself took out anything, it's the stuff we take out once we root. Your not sure what tracking I'm referring to, Look up Carrier IQ .
I charged this phone turned it on bypassed activation shut off the networks just to play around with it and it was still reporting network traffic, How, Why?
This phone has the ability to get past the switch thats thrown when you shut off your data connections. I did just activate the phone, I had forgot to turn data back on before doing so, but it didn't matter; after phone booted up and was settling in I saw the 3g icon pop up in the status bar, thats what reminded me, [I thought I shut that off] and sure enough it was still off, yet it still sent data, but where to? I'm not set on anything yet, yes I'm trying to get many opinions and I thank you for your input this phones been out for a while now and many things have changed since it was first released, like ICS, and htc unlock of the hboot. Much of the activity about rooting this phone is a year or more old and with the deals and such that are being thrown around now to move the remaning stock off shelves there will be ( I'm sure ) many newcomers to the phone and this forum so an updated collection of thoughts on this I figured would be welcome especially if there was some input from the veterans of this phone. I know that that's what they had said Officially But I OFFICIALLY have my doubts . Have you ever checked it out with the app?

as a matter of fact yes i have, our stock rom 5.xx is clean
the ports may or may not have it (depending if it was cleaned out or not by individual dev) but since its not running on the phone/carrier it was meant to, it wouldnt properly function
honestly i never really cared that much, i think the ciq drama was blown out of proportion

I'm glad to hear that.
Blown out of proportion? Not really, Think about it you send someone a text messg and CIQ knew what the text said BEFORE your intended recipient even recieved it,....... before you even sent it!

idk, doesnt really affect me...but the Sprint guys were all up in arms about it...mabye if i had a phone that it was an issue on id care more
Anyways, I flashed a custom ROM and CIQ would be gone anyways. I think nowadays we have to realize that we are going to always be tracked in some way.
JRngln said:
I'm pretty sure that once you root they know it cause all there tracking, or most of there tracking software goes offline for them, and they know that the only reason, for the most part, that the phone dissapeared is root.

Yep, I checked, it appears you did say that, but anyways... things are easier with the s off alpha rev x method but the other way will work too so whatever floats your boat...

New to rooting, have some questions. New phone or no?

I'm thinking about getting a new phone. Maybe someone can offer me some info to help me choose. I have a htc evo 4g now. I've been thinking bout rooting it. But a new phone might just be better. I really like my htc though so I was thinking bout a evo 3d maybe. Possibly another brand. I'm not much of a fan of motorola or samsung. But they seem to be getting better. I want to have wifi tethering so I know i'll have to root if I stay with htc. I really like the sense 3.0 my gf has on her evo 3d. The other thing is the ram for storing apps. I only have 512 with my evo and even less is usable. My toshiba thrive has 3gb, I've heard app space is all in the software. Is there a possibility to get a rom that runs sense 3.0 with ics? Would this give me more room to store more apps as well? Thanks.
Edit: My sprint contract is almost up. I think the beginning of july. I don't know if I'm going to stay. Might take whatever phone I get to boost or something.

Thanks. I edited my post. Dunno if I'm going to stay on sprint. I was thinking the 3d cause they can be had relitavely cheap and won't change my contract. Can switch to boost or whatever if I like.

I would definitely NOT recommended upgrading to an Evo 3D. Wait for the Evo 4G LTE if you want to stick with the Evo line. There are other, better phones out there than the 3D, even from other manufacturers.
As for rooting your current Evo 4G, there are Sense 3.0 roms available. I don't believe there are any ICS + Sense 3.0 roms, but I don't keep up with Sense at all. If you need more app storage, you can always partition your SD card and use the SD-Ext partition to store apps & data. You do, of course, need to be rooted to take advantage of an ext partition. Without partitioning, the Sense 3.0 roms will actually leave you with less storage space. AOSP roms will generally give you more space. With a decent sized SD card, you won't have to worry about space for apps.
Since my suggestion is to wait for the LTEvo, I'd go ahead and root the 4G. From there you can use the wireless tether, and/or flash any rom you want. Just be sure to read, read, and then read some more. Understand what you're doing before you do it. With the latest hboot (2.18), you have to use the HTCdev method to unlock the bootloader. You'll still be s-on, and you'll have to flash via fastboot. I'd suggest going ahead with Captain Throwback's method to downgrade and get s-off. From there, your options are limitless.
The fine folks here at xda will be happy to help you out along the way,, just be sure to do your own research. If you get stuck in the process and searching hasn't yielded any answers, then post questions (or send me a pm, I'm happy to help),
Good luck! Hopefully you don't jump the gun and get an Evo 3D, there are much better phones out now and coming out in the near future. The 3D is barely even an upgrade.
Thanks plainjane. The evo 3d is cheap round here. Usually $125-150. The ram is doubled and a 1.2ghz dual core would be better than what I have. I don't see the htc one being much of a upgrade either. I don't care much bout the speed of the camera and taking pics fast. Plus i'm not sure i wanna sign another 2 year contract. The one thing that really turns me off is the non removable battery. Hopefully it will have really good battery life. I still like to have the option to buy extended batteries if i want. What other phones would you suggest?

I agree with the previous comments about waiting on the new HTC phones to upgrade, I wouldn't waste your upgrade on a 3D.
I think you should definitely explore rooting your current Evo to check out some of the awesome custom Roms that are out there, including Sense 3.0 roms. Rooting and partitioning your SD card (maybe upgrade your card) will give you all the storage space you need. It will bring new life to your phone and help pass the time until your contract is up. Me personally, I'm waiting to see how Sprint rolls out the network upgrades/LTE before I get into another 2 year contract. I have a rooted Evo and it does everything I need, I don't need a new phone that is restricted by slow 3G.
Do you know which Hboot you have? Do some rooting research actually, do a lot of research and ask questions. Its not as hard as it seems.
And remember to back up your SD card and Nandroid if do decide to root.
Good luck

Thanks. I def wouldn't waste my upgrade on a 3d. I was just going to sell my evo and buy a 3d on craigslist. Might even be able to break even. I rooted my vizio vtab so I'm kinda familiar. Once you root a evo do you have to flash a rom? When I rooted my tablet it was the same as it was before, just had superuser access. Only did that to free the update service. I've been doing alot of reading. I know I have the newest hboot. From what I've read it will be some fun rooting it. Where can I learn more bout flashing roms and kernels? I've done a good bit of reading but are there any good informative videos?

No, you won't have to flash a rom but, you will probably want to after all the work to unlock it. It took me a week or two to flash after unlocking, and I was on the previous hboot that was a little easier. There should be rooting guides in the development section of the forum and there's also videos on youtube. I used Android Forum a lot at the beginning, they are very user friendly to what may seem like a silly question. Flashing is easy compared to the unlocking aspect, just remember to backup everything, make a Nandroid and wipe everything except sd card prior to flashing.
Does anyone know if you need to unroot before getting the new EVO LTE?

No, I don't think you'll have to even turn over your phone. When I get a new phone I'm keeping my Evo to continue flashing and using it as a kind of media toy!!!
