With my Galaxy S, I never experienced any "junk" notifications. With the Galaxy Nexus, I get about three per week. I've owned the phone less than a month. Is it a coincidence?
The notification bar has indicated the following:
- a green plus sign. When the notification bar is pulled down I see an image for "Win an iPod 2!" (does the plus sign mean they are hacking my Google+ account? I there is no notification when I go to Google+ on the PC)
- a star. The notification says "Battery Notice - touch here to increase battery life 200%"
Both scams obviously but I certainly don't want junk notifications on my phone. Any ideas how to stop them?
Find out where the spam is at and deal with it.
I would guess its Google Plus or Gmail.
Yes, it is a coincidence. Some app on your phone is using AirPush or a similar ad network to show these crappy notifications. Try downloading AirPush Detector from the Market to see which one it is.
Do you have an mp3 downloader app? Someone had the same issue a few weeks ago and that was the offender.

Despite being on this board every day since getting my Nexus (and reading the FAQ) I hadn't heard of AirPush. And again, this wasn't a problem for me three weeks ago with the Galaxy S so I thought it might be malware targeting ICS.
The guys a couple of posts above you were most helpful and I acknowledged that.

Ah... no. I didn't think it was the phone. I thought it might have been some hacker targeting ICS.
I'm pretty selective with downloading apps, I have about half a dozen, only ones with high ratings. Mostly the same ones I had on the Galaxy S. Just shows diligence can't be overstated.
Keep in mind that when any app can access the notification tray(on all versions of android), any app can use it for advertisement as well. It is no "hack" they simply create a notification or service that exposes this to you.

Okay, maybe I was a little harsh but it gets very tiring seeing, "Oh my previous phone didn't have x-problem." If people's previous phones never had the problems then maybe they should go back, ya know? So, I'm sorry if what I said was a little more...aggressive but you mentioning how you never had the problem before just set off how I have been feeling.
Quick tip for new Android users: Only install apps directly from the Google Android Market and don't install anything with less than 100.000 installations.
You will avoid most of the malware/bad apps this way (and a couple of good ones too - but you can come back for those later when you have more experience with Android).
Why would any hacker target ICS? The install base is so low that it makes no sense.

I knew there was going to be Bloatware.. Here it is the Verizon Galaxy Nexus will have bloat ware click here. I tried to tell some and i would get slammed when ever i did. If it also hits Tmo or Att, expect the same. The days of bloat free Nexus devices is over.. Im definitely Importing mines now. !
Now mind you i am importing mines soi expect none, but the fact that the verizon version has the Nexus brand name and it has bloat/rear branding horrifies me. its a disgrace
Look at what i just found. while not official it makes sense. One of the bloatware APK's not playing nice with ICS.. SMH
What is going on here, Google?
Unless the definition of what a Nexus phone is supposed to represent has changed, why is Google buckling to Verizon?
There's a Verizon logo on the back of the device too.
looks like the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is exactly that... a Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
You could argue that the two apps are not considered "bloatware", but I agree with OP - it's a slippery slope.
But, since we'll be able to remove them anyways, I dont think the 'sky is falling' is quite necessary. It WOULD be interesting to see what exactly is going on behind the scenes from Verizon/Google (the initial deal, the delays, and the negotiating).

Not the biggest thing in the world, but how does this suggest firmware updates? Does Google send updates to Verizon so they can tweak it before releasing? Does this mean well be at the mercy of Verizon to release updates? This kinda defeats the purpose of a Nexus phone whose updates come directly from Google.
Damn this phone looks worse and worse today. Wifi Death Grip, now the possibility of delayed or lack of speedy updates. Ouch.

Out of the box, you are right. My apologies, I meant to say - give it 2 weeks, and you will not see them. With the large dev community backing the device, any bloatware, annoying searchbox, or other change you'd like will most likely surface soon.
That doesn't change the fact that it was placed on the device in the first place, which I think is the initial complaint of the OP and many others. If a Nexus device cannot keep carrier apps away, little hope is left for any other device.
Damn. Unbelievable. Goodbye Nexus program. It was fun while it lasted.

i'd say it's pretty indicative that updates will have to go through Verizon first. Android updates have always had to go through the carrier if they have insisted on their own bloatware to be preinstalled.
considering a lot of peopel consider those 2 apps useful, its still not a deal breaker.
still, as it hasn't been stated anywhere yet, it's just speculating and rumor-mongering

Yes, this is what you get with a carrier-subsidized phone.
None of the other Nexus phones were sold/distributed by carriers. That is why they had no bloat. The sim-free Galaxy Nexus is also not a carrier phone. It will have no bloat.
If you don't want carrier crapware, don't get a carrier phone. Oh, your carrier doesn't allow any phones on their network that they didn't sell? Well get a new carrier. F***ing CDMA ****e.

Did you even bother reading the article? Christ, you probably should so you don't seem like a complete idiot posting threads like this.
1 of the apps is the My Verizon application, which also allows you to put a widget on your desktop of your phone to monitor data usage (rather useful IMHO). This is hardly bloatware...
The other application is the Backup Assistant application, which allows you to backup your contact information to Verizon's online database, and would allow you to easily, and quickly, transfer your contacts from 1 phone to another without having to transfer them manually.
All things said, these are hardly bloatware applications (like the blockbuster app, or the vcast application). In fact, the article even makes MENTION of the fact that these really aren't bloatware.

There's nothing wrong with expecting things to work. The problem is that most of the things you are expecting are things that you should have known about or things that never existed or were expected to be implemented.
Seems like OP is one of those average Android users who have not seen what stock Android is.

You sound like a facebook addicted teenager. You realized that you bought a device that will set the standard for FUTURE software development right? If you want to be at the forefront of android OS, you have to let app developers to catch up. What, do you think facebook knows what will happen with ICS? If you can't live without those apps, go back to a gingerbread device, there are many choices!
I find it funny that you listed low quadrant score as an issue. You should really research about a phone before you buy it, this will inform you about the hardware limitations such as no sd card support or 5 mp camera before you take the plunge of purchasing the device.

No micro sd card support - this will always be an issue. The first 2 didn't have it, why would you think the 3rd one will. Galaxy Nexus has always been a developer phone so its treated differently.
Confusing user interface - From what everyone is saying, they are loving the new interface. It's refreshing and when you get used to it, its hard for people to go back
No Facebook contacts sync
Nexus S 4G had this issue. This isn't a issue with facebook not following a certain protocol that Google requested. and they took it off the Nexus phones. Or they just don't like them because they have their version of a social network
No native social network widget
They do its called google plus. Everything isn't native but 3rd party sources
Can't add more home screens
As much as I have to kinda agree with you in this because its nice to have 7 or more screens, its a dev phone so you knew this was happening long before ICS was announced
Fuzzy speaker
that sucks, but from reviewers they say its quieter but clear
Lock screen vibration can't be switched off

Just get another widget that looks better anyways. They never truly had a digital clock worth adding on your home page anyways.
Quadrant benchmark only 1500 score
There have been cases that proven that the GN has scored better on web tests and other tests. Quadrant can be faulty. You are using a gingerbread program on a completely different OS. A bigger jump than eclair to gingerbread. I would compare the Razr scores as the initial breakdown (OMAP4430 vs OMAP4460 in the GN) and use that as your base comparing since Razr runs on Gingerbread
Lag in many areas
No Facebook events calendar sync
Only 5m camera Megapixels shouldn't matter. and Someone has done a camera comparison. The GN is not far off and infact has better low light capabilities than the S2. Once again this is a the same story over again, you knew this going from Nexus S that the camera won't be the best class, the same holds true here.
NO SWYPE - Swype will eventually be available through apk once it is compatible. Google isn't going to put swype on their phones. It's a 3rd party software and its up to other manufacturers to decide if they want it on their android device
THE VOLUME BUG HAS REALLY PUT ME OFF AND SAMSUNG ARE STILL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE, I feel ya about the volume bug. But thats what it is a bug. I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.
I installed the new market the other day and now that it is tabbed for the my apps screen and shows every app you have ever installed I have to look through EVERY APP I have ever installed to see my paid for apps. There is no way google would make it like this so how can I filter them so I can see only my purchased apps? I am usually pretty good with this stuff, but I can't find any option.
Edit: Ugh sorry guys I answered my own question. This is COMPLETE BS:
* The*list of apps you have purchased*but uninstalled or haven’t installed yet*has moved*to the All tab… which means it’s now mixed in with the free apps you no longer have on the device. I’m not sure how I feel about that – on one hand, I like that it’s gone from the first list, but ideally there should be a way to filter paid apps from free in the All list. Maybe someday…
Honestly google? Who ever made this design decision should be fired.
Worst design decision EVER.
What the HELL Google?
Yes, worse than anything Apple. I know. I said it.

OK, so this is pretty exciting information, i just hope this isnt something the carriers can disable in some way.
That being said, I do see one major downfall and that is, IMO, this might cause carriers to push the update slower, or even omit some devices that would normally get updated to make sure their apps are getting used on as many devices as possible.
Cant wait!!!
If true, it's a game changer. But why do I get the feeling carriers will still find a way to install crapware/bloatware that we can't remove.

Damn, I agree! The main reason I wanted Root (well two reasons) was for bloatware removal/freeze, and for backing up apps/app data (especially games!)....Well now with most apps doing the cloud-save thing, if Lollipop really does allow us to remove both carrier AND oem bloatware, I won't be as desperate to Root....although IF Root ever comes to our ATT Note 4, I'll still Root, just won't be as desperately needed. I'd still like to put a custom ROM on my Note4 someday, but I can wait a year or so.....after I'm out of warranty
Lets look at this like the millions upon millions of people who own a smartphone and never, ever figure out even the basics on how to use it. You know the ones, the idiots who buy the iPhone for an outrageous price, and don't even know how to use text messaging. (My mother ... I sent her a picture while on vacation of her grand children, then when I got home she handed me her phone and said "What did you do to my phone, it now has this thing on it" and I had to show her the message!) We see it all the time. People who don't even know that there is a calculator, or how to set up their email, or how to do anything other than Candy Crush on it...
The carriers can do whatever they want to those phones. Those people (and I would bet you are looking at 90% or more of smartphone owners) don't know how to uninstall an app, or don't bother to try. You could make the boatware uninstallable and the vast majority of people would still have it, and never know the difference. Up until recently the only people taking off bloatware were people like us who found a way... Root hasn't been this hard for very long, so their bloatware install numbers won't change much if we can uninstall without root.

Yes, for 2 reasons. Buying an iPhone and having absolutely no idea why she did it. I think people who are passionate about the iPhone an want one, more than anything else are delusional, but at least most of them can articulate why they want it, and many of them use it to its very limited potential. Then there is my mom, who got an iPhone because to her, thats was really the only phone they had at the store. Its falling for the advertising.
And the second reason... she released me into the wild to be a productive member of society... anyone with half a brain would have realized that it would be a key step in the collapse of modern civilization. :silly:

I am not sure if you understand that we don't care about those other 90%...we care about our 10% who is smart enough to utilize what we own.

OMG....awesome, thank you so much sir.
What's up with all the iPhone hate? Different strokes for different folks; no reason to bad mouth others for a difference in taste.
Well, seems the way around this is already out there. This will just continue to put these apps on like they currently do, and we still can't remove them. This will only be handy if they have their programs to be downloaded automatically from the play store.....which they probably won't, they'll keep them in the system.

Any proof to this? Where are you getting this information from?
I hope this gives users the ability to remove these apps. Hell if Microsoft can pull it off so should Google. I have disabled over 20 apps on my AT&T Note 4 with the majority being carrier bloatware. Ridiculous.

This is only for phones that come with 5.0 on them. All phones upgraded from KitKat to 5.0 will not have this feature. Also these same updated phones will not have encryption as their default setting either.

This is the first phone I have owned that has made me deal with annoying ads.
1. The ads come up in the locked screen, which is set to a clock. Just a blue screen or my photo of choice- either.
There is actually a clock, and then some total rubbish below it. The most annoying are some idiotic religious ads offering like 3 prayers a day. Sorry, I don't do religion, and i obviously never browse for anything that has anything to do with any religion.
What is this? Where does it come from? How to get rid of it?
2. Being new to Android and in total despise of iOS.... Not much choice- no more good windows phones offered. Obviously this app-based mentality is not really intelligent. Why do we need dozens of stupid little buttons/ icons instead of a normal browser????? I know where to find the source of ads and block them within windows or linux, but these apps... go figure which one of these happy buttons for little children is associated with a particular ad-infested 'app' (or all of them?).
3. Here are some names/ descriptions: some prayers rubbish, no logical names attached, really.
Relay Utah (what???? I don't even live in UT) what is it?
something with cartoons and lolly-pop looking things (am i 5 years old?)
4. called verizon multiple times, and after 30-40 minutes of listening some mumbling couldn't get an answer at all. they don't even know a product they offer! Someone in tech support just keeps browsing for my problem. which I can do just as well. No answers either.
5. verizon connected me to google support. Besides thick accent and really bad, incoherent English, nothing else. Keeps repeating 'this is the way apps work'. Yeah. you can imagine off-shore 'tech support'. Makes my blood boil.
all right, i guess that would be enough.
Any suggestions?

Don't take offense to this question. How old are you? I am asking because that would determine the answers you get and let us know how familiar you are with browsing the internet on devices. Can you take a screenshot? Have you rooted or otherwise modified the device in any way? It is most likely if not definitely something that you downloaded that is now causing this to occur.
Did you download a lockscreen app from somewhere? I'm not familiar with whatever crapware Verizon might put on their phones but the type of adds you are seeing don't sound like anything a carrier would be pushing. You can also download Malwarebytes from the Play Store. Presumably you are familiar with the program on Windows. Do a scan and see if it turns up anything suspicious. You almost certainly downloaded and installed an app that is causing what you are describing.
Just uninstall any weird app you might have installed
I understand that you're frustrated, but please do not join a community and start bashing the very foundation of said community: Android. I've never had an ad problem with Android. It's very clear that either you or Verizon have installed something silly that displays ads on your lockscreen. I'm betting it's the former. I bought a Verizon Pixel XL and for several days I left it completely stock while trying to figure out how to get Project Fi to work (I'm not a Verizon customer) and not once did I have any problems with ads. I browsed the internet, used Facebook, etc. No problems. I would take some time and uninstall any lockscreen apps or customization apps you've installed. If one of the Verizon apps is displaying ads, this is the first time I'm hearing of it.
As for the "App-based Mentality" I'm not really sure what you're getting at. On a Windows machine or a Windows phone, each app / program has it's own shortcut, does it not? If I want to launch Microsoft Word and then launch the internet browser, do I not have to click on two separate icons? How is that any different from Android? Or iOS for that matter. Android is what you make of it. You're not stuck with all the icons on a homescreen like you are with iOS. They reside in your app drawer anyways. You can make your homescreen as clean or as messy as you want. That's the beauty of it.
Hope this helps.
It's not Verizon, I have them as my carrier. I doubt this is a legitimate post, he joined, ranted, left and hasn't been on since. This should be ignored for what it obviously is.

My Pixel 2XL has adds
I'm a first time Pixel 2 XL user, I've been a Verizon customer for years, I've always used Samsung Notes. I decided this year to go with the Google Pixel 2XL.
And from day 1 i get pop up adds. When I'm texting, browsing the Internet. It just goes to a add, or it will be the balloon hang down add. And no I'm not a "Troll"

i also got the the google pixel 2 xl and it got the ads as soon as i turned it on this is annoying nobody can explain how to gte rid of the im ready to smash the phone other than that i like the phone
These ads have nothing to do with your phones. It's bloatware installed by the carrier , or by you installing some app from the app store or third party source. Guarantee if you flash back to stock non carrier branded Pixel firmware they would be gone. Or just freeze/uninstall whatever app you downloaded that causes it.
