Pretty obvious that the uber microites run the show, people making totally valid points about an OS with a lack of facilities, that the OS it is replacing had in abundance are castigated and threads closed. Free speech my arse, wonder if the microsoft adverts that keep popping up could give us a clue, and there again perhaps I don't wonder. Whatever happened to democracy, are the uber microites dispensing their sponsors version of that ????
Who ever said this place was a democracy? If you don't like how it's run, maybe you shouldn't be so loyal. Plenty of other sites where you can go and be a rebel.
Personally, I just can't get enough of this place.
Same **** happens in the android section every day. Seemingly the only somewhat mature community on here is the WinMo community and that's because most of them are dinosaurs.

rhory, do the community a favor and leave since you have such a great problem. You don't know how to share opinions, you attack people who disagree with you. You make retarded claims such as 'its a beta OS' when you have no idea what the term 'beta' means. And it gets old you trolling every single positive topic. It isn't that speech is restricted, it's that you feel the need to be a jerk in every single topic and ruin the experience.
The mods probably just don't want trolls running rampent across the forum, which on a forum like this would be easy to have happen. There isn't bias in that.

There is no such thing as free speech without consequences. It gets tiring to hear people say I have freedom of speech. You do, but you can be censored, or penalized for some of the things that you say. This is so in every free, democratic country. Look at Slander and also Hate Speech.
Now to get to the Hate Speech aspect - you want your members to express themselves without negatively impacting on the other members. We all have different personalities and idea and to properly manage a forum to ensure that everyone gets to express themselves without negatively impacting on other members is not easy since we can be hedonistic.
Anyone that has read your posts in the Windows Phone 7 forum gets your point. You think the OS is garbage and not fit to be sold. You could easily just move on, but you do not. I am not your psychologist so I will not bother trying to explain why.
But maybe, just maybe it is you. It is a difficult concept for one's ego to accept. The Cheers song works well in these cases:
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.

I'm sorry to say, but if free speech has such consequences like censorship then it is no longer free speech. That being said, a forum is one of the last places on earth where you would be able to use free speech. Forums have been censored due to political or personal opinions for years. Also democratic countries do not support free speech. They do accept a wider range of topics in the "media" then other governments would allow, but they definitely do not condone free speech.

Still does not change your GDP being less than the 3rd world stated you mentioned.
I hate even giving threads like this any attention, but it's hard to not just ask every time, If you don't like it, why are you here? Let others talk about the OS without having to sift through your stupid threads and pointless rants. If you don't like it... go away. Stop acting like an infant.

https://twitter.com/#!/BenThePCGuy/status/146337278485217280
I think, its better for MS to made WP7 more user friendly.
This is a waste of money.
Btw, phones with WP7 are so cheap, any can buy one..if he WANTS one.
The same strategy was with Chevron, and Geohot, the iPhone hacker.
And many others, possible at XDA to???????????
Anyway WP7 wont be better without poeple doing hacking and developing
Your post is confusing.
OP's writing skills are lacking to put it kindly.
That said MS needs more guys like Ben promoting WP while simultaneously attacking weaknesses/vulnerabilities of other platforms. This is critical but also to keep it timely & up to date (see recent android vulnerabilities and apps removed from site).
As more & better 2nd gen devices finally ship across all carriers (and LTE in the USA) this is crucial for social media promotions.

In many countries, a Windows Phone (like an iPhone and many Android devices) remains a very expensive device, even when bought with a 2-year contract from an operator (ex.: 400Euro for a Samsung Omnia 7 with a 2-year contract extension, and 500Euro without a contract.
That's twice the monthly salary for many people in some european countries.

Nope. All phone systems (in the usa) have a "weak market share" compared to Android.
Carriers and manufacturers are giving away (and subsidizing) Android phones. MS has plenty of revenue to do the same to customers, in the absence of the carriers doing so. MS needs to do more getting carriers to commit but Android had a 3 year head start there and billions in marketing $$ spent already.
3000+ replies to Ben are telling.
You should learn a little more about marketing and how products are sold to mainstream customers before ripping into Ben & co.

I called rather than sent an email because talking to them lets them know we DON'T want these pieces of garbage passed. It's harder to ignore a phone call than an email.
This was the best idea to promote awareness

I absolutely hope you're right.
don't get me wrong, i'm not a pro "stupid law against internet"
but was this really necessary ?
a lot of visitor are from outside the USA
so even if we sign (i did it) the petition, the lawmans from the US will only think : what does this stupid french guy bother us..
also, even if politics get petitions from the internet... as long as people don't move on the real life, it will only be hopeless...
in france we had also some stupid laws, a lot of people said : we'll go to Paris and say our disagreement with us
finaly, there were only a few people in Paris, so they vote the ugly law ....
briging down XDA to say : we are against it and we'll only come back after 50k people signed the petition, is imo not very usefull
and by doing so you also force people to sign (were is the free will ?)
imagine the poor guy wo did a wrong manipulation on his device and he comes on xda to find help... he will comite suicide
a notice would have been beter, because the usefull informations are accessible
and you know politics are dumbasses... if they saw some actions like XDA they will say : 10 people does some action on internet to force other to sign it.. so the petition will be even more worthless into their eyes
i'm never against signing petitions, even against US laws, but here i found this a little too much
and don't forget, a lot of people from other countries come here, they have not the same mind as you...
some will say : yeah they are right i will sign it and refer this petition
other will say : what the **** ? i'm not interested in this **** put it back
and other will say : yeah but was it really needed to go that far?
The thing is that the future of XDA and numerous other websites which operate from the USA are at stake.
Logging on to XDA and finding the petition page (which you had been notified about prior to the black out) is better than logging on and finding that the website has been taken down because of a stupid copyright.
XDA folk can not just let it happen. Everyone needs to do their part. This way was the most effective, and I don't think that 4.5 hours of downtime effected development significantly, but it did show us the way (notice I am not using 'force') to fighting the SOPA petition.
It was your choice. If you wanted to see XDA back, you signed the petition. If you wanted the internet to stay the same you signed the petition.
A French person signing shows that SOPA is disliked worldwide, and the effects it will have (if implemented) on the world, and not just the USA.
+1 to that! Everyone should do there part, the domino effect of those two laws would be devastating! Well done all who signed!
sent from my android powered, cyanogenmod filled wrecking machine! using xda app.
That was awesome. It's amazing how quickly this site got that many people involved. Thanks to all the admins, mods, devs, and users who spread the word.
I wish i could be a part of the blackout signature....
I really wished to be a part of the signatures...but I am not a us citizen I am a Bangladeshi.....but i was eagerly checking the status every other time i could...really i am proud of you all for make this happened...cheers to xda developers and all the supporters..proud to be with XDA family..

Surely, Apple will waste no time and definitely waste millions in undoing this. But, I hope that judge doesn't budge one bit! Go, go, go! Faith in humanity, semi-restored...
That is beautiful I understand the apology, but I don't understand how they can mandate that newpapers/magazines have to publish the apology. Apple will probably have them put it in the back, if they can't get the judge to reconsider.

I agree. I mean I understand that there was a lot of damage done to their image. I mean honestly with a story like this newspaper/magazines will most likely report on this stuff anyway. :/
I understand the whole "Copy right infringement", but this seems like some middle school playground behavior. It's the corporate world where everyone thinks they were the first and everyone else copied them. i still get a good laugh out of it though
I know that advertising, CPC, CPI platforms, and in-app purchasing are the typical monetization tactics, but these seem like several steps off from where many developers (including myself) are. I know that networking and meeting the right people may land you an opportunity to pitch an app for potential VC/angel funding, but other than that, would love to hear people's experiences and lessons learned with these types of opportunities.

I am in the same boat here...I would love to hear some resources or ideas for funding that people have actually used, that doesn't involve things like kickstarter/etc. I have 10 App ideas sitting on a back burner now. I don't think all of them are money makers, but after testing the ideas on a sample audience, I firmly believe 2-3 of them are. All of the layouts, planning, theory, and even some artwork is done for multiple of them, but just need more resources to full get going.
Again, would love to hear what real people have done to get going.

You should submit to this competition: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2355446&highlight=samsung+s+smart+app
I was reading up on the details, and the Venture Capital potential is intriguing to me - the grand prize wouldn't be so bad either. Are you working on these ideas by yourself or with a team? I'm lacking a lot of the programming end of the spectrum.
VC might be difficult
I'd say, looking at the current climate in the industry, it would be very difficult to land even a seed round (less than $500k) without a significant previous experience and a good team. Most of the investors perceive mobile gaming as a hit-driven business and I think they are right, it's high-risk and requires skills, cash and the right team to deliver any kind of decent results. I've seen teams raising seed / A rounds and just burning money.
As for personal experience - last year we've raised a seed round, it was quite difficult and I'm quite sure it would be even more difficult now.
Anyway, I'd love to hear more from others.

Honestly, if cash is a commodity for you (and to who is it not), crowdfunding is your best bet. If you can come up with a good trailer and and effective pitch, the money will start rolling in, to which you can THEN start attracting the VCs. That's what happened when I started my business.

Yes, crowdfunding is a very important, and potentially the quickest, source of cash. Thing is not each and every product is suitable for crowdfunding. Just to give you an example - my project is a B2B type of thing and its main clients are F2P mobile game devs. I guess it would be hard for us to crowdsource enough money to start the project. Crowdfunding is great for B2C, not so sure about B2B.

Couldn't help but see this thread and try to help out some fellow app developers. I understand monetizing an app can be extremely difficult if you can't find the right person to pitch your product too. I'm an app developer myself and I attended the funding, discovery, and monetization conference hosted by The AppShow and CONNECT in San Diego, CA and learned a lot about monetizing my product there. I'm now going to be attending The AppShow in San Diego early January, 2014 where I can talk to investors face-to-face and hopefully get my app funded, I'm so excited!!
