So it's the end of the year and I have a week or so off work with time on my hands.
I have a stock Desire, unbranded and not rooted. Yes it is running 2.2 but beyond that it is as it shipped.
So over the last few weeks I have started to note the low disk warning every now and then. Some of this driven by bad mailbox management on my part as I sync with Exchange and the Desire stores all email and contacts in the system memory and not on the SD card. In addition, large applications such as Swype don't help and only certain apps will actually install to SD
I can't help thinking that as I install and then uninstall applications, all the memory is not recovered.
So I have a few options.
1. Wipe everything and start again. This is easy to do and gives me a nice clean install for the new year
2. Root and then try and force further apps to SD (but this does not get around the mail storage)
3. Flash a different ROM. Some of these appear to give me better memory management.
Now this is my work phone so any ROM would have to be 100% stable. I do not have time these days to "fiddle" with settings each time I try and do something with my phone.
So any thoughts?
Which of these options would you take and why?
If it's your work phone then I suggest you to root it and flash it with a custom ROM which supports ext partitions. If you think you can't survive without HTC Sense then flash LeeDroid. For native android interface I recommend DeFroST 6.1 (but not 6.1a)
I've never used LeeDroid but heard that it is stable. I've been using DeFroST for weeks and never ever had a problem.
With ext2 partition support, you can install all of your apps to an ext partition on your sd card, which the phone sees as it's native memory. You'll never ever run out of free space.
Rooting is harmless if you do it carefully. So be careful.
Personally, I'd just do a hard reset of the phone and start again only installing the apps you know you're going to use and try and keep it free from clutter. If it's been fine as it is then there may not be any need to change it.
Otherwise I'd look at Teppic's rooted stock ROM. You can add things like A2SD+ so you can install more apps but other than that it'll be as it currently is so nothing more to get used to.
Alternatively it might be worth looking at something different - either an AOSP ROM or MIUI. I know a lot of people don't like it but, for me, it's the best ROM I've used - and I never thought I'd like it!! It's quick, stable and has a wow factor I've not experienced since first using Sense
Interesting
So I tried option 1 first to see how things went.
I have now reinstalled ALL the applications I had before (thanks to Appbrain) plus the 10MB Flash 10.1 update that I had been avoiding due to space problems.
I have resynced all mail and am back to where I was earlier today.
But
I now have 47MB free storage on the phone compared to 13MB (and remember I could not install the Flash update).
So it does look like Android doesn't clear up after itself (just like Windows). Perhaps somebody should develop an app for that
I am also seeing the phone is a lot more responsive and snappy.
So a wipe and reinstall every few months looks to be the way forward for now.
Thanks
+1 for MIUI, great rom.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Try CacheMate for Root Users Free to clear the cache and free up some of our tiny internal memory. SRSLY HTC? You give us a top-shelf phone, with less than 200MB of internal storage, and a 2GB microSD card. At least mine came with a 2GB card, what did yours come with?
I have also tried MIUI and I thought I wouldn't like it also but after using it a while I love it. It's a fantastic rom.
Having the exact same problem as the OP don't know why space keeps disappearing. my exchange account seems to store every single email instead of deleting them after 5 days like i have set it to?!? Also when apps are deleted the space isn't recovered. might have to do a fresh install again. As i havent wiped anything since the last OTA that i got, maybe that is causing the problems.

To be honest I don't think Exchange is to blame here.
I have mine set to sync all emails (but not attachments). My inbox currently sits at around 500 mails (one of my jobs over Xmas to sort) which equates to about 15MB on the Desire.
I think it is various applications that don't uninstall themselves properly.
Bit annoying this happens. as i have about 15mb free and it won't let me install anymore apps! Might consider rooting...get a HD ROM only thing holding me back is voiding the warranty as i only got this phone in october.
What ROM are you running at present? If you're unbranded (or even on the Vodafone ROM) the RUU is available to go back to stock if you ever need to
Current unbranded is 2.29.405.5, current Vodafone is 2.33.161.2
Yeah running the latest Vodafone ROM. got an OTA update a few weeks back. Might root over xmas when i have some free time. I did it before with my Hero. But i think the procedure is different on the Desire (and too me looks more difficult lol)
Here's the Vodafone 2.33.161.2 RUU, keep it safe as you can go back to stock if ever needed:
http://www.multiupload.com/K0FR1OK301
Otherwise root ahead and see what's about!
Thank you very much!! looks like my xmas present this year is a desire with an HD ROM
I've used the RCMixHD ROM and found it great so I recommend that one
Leedroid's rom has been rock stable and fast for me, I just tried the Z rom by robocik(almost similar I guess to his rcmixhd) and found it lagging ang crashy at times (though I did use a titanium backup although not recommended)
leedroids will work for sure and is save to use if your phone in important to you, robocik's next sense roms are fun to tinker with and good for day to day usage but not mission critical stuff, leedroid's is
Root phone and ues apps to SD,which is the reason why I like android!
We can enjoy the rise and fall in flash rom..
Of crouse, you can choose a stable rom to use rather than frequently flashing.
CM6,Oxygen,and MINI can satisfy your taste.Using backup software can reserve the settings,so you do not have to worry about it.
Whatever, using apps to SD and intall apps as many as you want to.
Hi all, I'm thinking of rooting and possibly installing Cyanogenmod on my Incredible. I just had a few questions before starting, and would really appreciate some help. I'm planning on using unrevoked3.
1. I've seen a few warning messages in some tutorials I've read involving the type of screen on the phone, but I'm short on specifics of the dangers. How can a find out whether I have a AMOLED or SLCD screen, and what are the precautions involved with the rooting/installing Cyanogenmod for each type?
2. When installing Cyangenmod, will my texts, contacts, settings, apps, etc. be wiped? It it right that most of these can be backed up with Titanium Backup or other apps? Will I have to re-purchase any paid apps? Can I just restore backups, or do I need to re-download?
3. If for any reason I'd like to return to the stock HTC ROM, is that possible? How? Is this done with Nandroid backups? Is there a way to reset to defaults?
4. Is there any compelling reason to purchase ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, or will I be fine with the free versions?
5. Is flashing the radio necessary at any point in rooting or installing Cyanogenmod? (I am most unfamiliar with this topic)
More questions may follow. Thanks, and sorry if I'm being a nuisance.

Your device, if purchased recently is most likely SLCD. How to know? Do you still have the box? It should indicate type. Type of 3 or greater is SLCD. There are a few threads here on XDA you can search for to verify screen type from device, but idk how to tell you that.
2. When installing Cyangenmod, will my texts, contacts, settings, apps, etc. be wiped? It it right that most of these can be backed up with Titanium Backup or other apps? Will I have to re-purchase any paid apps? Can I just restore backups, or do I need to re-download?
Foremost, you should wipe all user data/factory reset before you flash CM or any ROM other than what you are currently running. See stock ROM and backup guidance below.
Unless you back up your texts, they will be wiped - there are apps that do several things with them, search for what works for you - such as having them e-mailed, stored, etc. Your contacts, if phone and not google-based will also be wiped. There are threads detailing how to convert phone to google contacts. Paid apps are tied to your gmail account, and will be available for d/l when gmail is reactivated on CM. Don't recommend TB to restore backups, especially not system apps, but to each his own, and ymmv.
3. If for any reason I'd like to return to the stock HTC ROM, is that possible? How? Is this done with Nandroid backups? Is there a way to reset to defaults?
Return to stock HTC ROM is done via RUU. Plenty of RUU threads to be found. Recommend just after rooting to back up your 'stock' setup, then you have the stock ROM, only rooted. The default settings will remain, but with root access. Going through the RUU process to go fully stock will remove root. Conversely, Virtuous ROM is a nearly 100% stock ROM, rooted, with enhancements. A best practice in modding your device is to periodically back up the contents of your SD card to your PC so you will have those contents if/when the SD card fails.
4. Is there any compelling reason to purchase ROM Manager and Titanium Backup, or will I be fine with the free versions?
In order to get the CM nightlys through ROM Manager, you will need ROM Manager Premium. Absent that, TB Premium is well worth the money. Supporting the developers via premium/paid apps keeps them developing for the device.
5. Is flashing the radio necessary at any point in rooting or installing Cyanogenmod? (I am most unfamiliar with this topic)
If your device is new, you probably do not need to flash the radio. Read the several very good radio threads on XDA for granular explanations. Many ROMs specify in the feature list the minimum radio version required. Note that flashing a radio can be risky if done incorrectly. Opinions vary on best version. I've had no issues with any ROM I've flashed with v 2.15.00.07.28. Also take note of the HBOOT version required/recommended in a ROM's feature list.

No nuisance worries. ALL of us were asking the same/similar questions at one point; knowledge sharing is the embodiment of the open-source community.
Thanks for the useful information. Another question, hopefully someone can respond to this one quickly. I went ahead and started rooting, and unrevoked has just been sitting there saying Pushing Recovery... (3575808 bytes) for the past 10 minutes, at least. Nothing is happening to my phone, it's acting normal. Is the process supposed to be so slow? I've installed the proper drivers.
That is normal.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Wow, that was quicker than I expected. Thanks a bunch!
are you rooted?
Nope. Still "Pushing Revovery". Hopefully this is still normal...if not could someone let me know what to do?
Just want to say it's better not to pay for ROM Manager in my opinion. I do have the premium license and it is handy for CM7 nightly downloads, but I don't even use if for that purpose any more. Other than that it doesn't offer any advantages, as it still requires you to perform certain functions manually.

^^^^^^ +1 on that - there used to be more stuff in the premium section, now it's just CM. So if you want CM nightlys, go for it, else stick to the free version.
Duly noted, thanks. BTW, that root yesterday went nowhere. I closed up unrevoked and unplugged my phone, it seems fine. I'm gonna try again when I get some time, but does anyone know what might have happened? It never got past that pushing recovery stage.

Depends of if you want leading/bleeding edge stuff - CM7 release candidate, or a stable version.
As a first ROM other than stock, you gotta choose whether you want solid/smooth and issue-free, or participate in the things that come with a release candidate.
My opinion - gingerbread is not all that compared to what we have now - but that's just my opinion.
I have another question. Which Rom has the most stable and mostly stock HTC sense 2.0 found in the desire z or desire hd/inspire 4g? I really am liking sense and I tried out the cm7 rc, it was good but I had some problems like when I install an app for the first time, it force closes unless I uninstall and install again. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, let me know. I'm willing to try out other Roms but I wanna be safe and not do much.
Try IncRom - stable, fast, insane battery life. For a more tricked out Sense Rom, try Incredibly Reengineered.

Sky Raider 3.5 is an excellent Sense ROM as well.

Okay, I need help. Every time I try to run unrevoked it's either communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted or failed to push recovery image. I installed the HBOOT drivers and I'm 99.9% positive I never installed HTC sync. Any ideas?
Are you connected to PC with the original USB cable? Some aftermarket cables don't work well communicating w/ PC, and are said to only charge but not transmit data.
Is there a one-click UnrEVOked out now? Think I saw that somewhere....

Edit: SD card has ample room, and is formatted FAT32, yes?
Yeah, I'm using the original, with charge only and USB debugging. I should mention that these errors happen the instant I plug my phone in. However, I do notice that "CD Drive (E Verizon Mobile" and two inaccessible F and G (which would normally be the internal storage and the SD card when set to disk drive) drives appear under my computer when I plug the phone in on charge only. Could this have anything to do with it?
The only versions of unrevoked I know of are unrevoked3, which roots and flashes Clockworkmod recovery as soon as you plug in your phone with the program open. There's also unrevoked forever which sets your security to S-OFF, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I'm looking for.

Stock unrooted ROM, getting errors on USB plugin? That may be something else.
For context, the version of unrevoked that's out does S-OFF automatically, users get no choice in that. Make sure you follow the steps in the guide(s) -
It sounds like you may have a toggle yet to click on the device so it's not giving you wonky errors on plugin - the guide(s) will tell you what needs doing.
Edit: There shouldn't be any popup prompts for Verizon Mobile when you plug the device into the USB when connected to PC.
Also, the elements of unrevoked must be unzipped, and they don't execute until you click on them - after device is successfully connected to PC.
The step-by-step guides should fix you up.
You've probably heard about the Carrier IQ fuster cluck by now and, if you're like me, are up in arms and want it gone if you have it on your phone. I would suggest that you don't use the removal tool yet...
I am rooted using the "stock" method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728 and just downloaded the tool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110 to check for CIQ on my phone (it was there) and purchased the license to remove it, which I also did. I then rebooted the phone as instructed but can't get past the SGS2 splash screen.
Can someone please help me... if I have to flash a new rom, fine - I can accept that. I should have been thinking before I did anything but I had only rooted up to this point and didn't have any Nandroid backups or anything and that's my fault. However, I used the internal phone storage or SD as my primary file location and need to access it to grab my files. Is there any way to do this if my phone isn't booting up?
I read another thread (can't seem to find it now I was on my mobile device), where another person did the same exact thing as you and had to ODIN to stock and start from scratch. The phone isn't bricked, but it's not going to boot now.
I'm disappointed because according to Caulkin's ROM CIQ is removed, but I used the tool you are speaking about as well and it states that CIQ still exists. I was going to pay the .99 and have it removed since that tool supposedly works for Samsung devices, but after reading that other thread and now yours - I'll pass.
I'd recommend re-ODIN'ing your phone, not from experience with the issue but just from what I read from the other thread - you aren't going to have much of another option.
EDIT: Here's the link to the thread with your exact questions pretty much and the answers you can expect - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360988
Ugh. Thanks for the reply... this is so annoying. If I go that route, it's going to wipe all of my internal SD memory, too? I've already lost access to the items on my external card because I had that encrypted... but I used my internal for primary storage and have a LOT of items on there of great importance...
Starting from scratch I can deal with - losing all my files I can't.
What package are you on? It works on EG30, but not on EK02. Framework is different.
Worked find on my EG30. Waiting for it to be updated to the EK02 package. Should be around soon.
Not trying to nitpick, but you should always have at least two backups of your internal and external memory. That's at least what I do, usually I backup all my files once a week and do a NANDroid once a week. Saves the headaches from ever happening.
You could try three-fingering to see if you can get into recovery and see what you can do from there, but I don't think you are really going to be able to do much. This method has been tried and proven to soft-brick your phone.
I was going to attempt this method this morning and then did a simple search on XDA and found it had soft-bricked that guys phone I linked you too. That's all it would have taken...
Good luck.
I have some backups, as well as Titanium Media Sync running and Google+ uploading photos, but there are always gaps. Unfortunately I haven't done a 'hard' full drag and drop back up for a couple of weeks, and you can generate a lot of data in that time.
To tell you the truth I'm a little unsure about how or what it takes to have the ability to do a Nandroid backup. I've done plenty of them in the past but what I mean is that since I just did the stock root method I don't know if I needed to install CWM or something like that to get the ability to do a Nandroid. I just haven't had the time to research that fully so I hadn't done one yet.
For what it's worth, the ****storm about the CIQ thing just really exploded in the last 24 hours or less so I didn't think there was anything to look up about the removal tool. I guess I was so distracted about the BS that is Carrier IQ and just wanted it gone, so I ran the tool without thinking there was a database of information on it already. It was my bad.
In the automated rooting thread, you could choose Option C and select a kernel+CWM to install EG30+CWM and EG31+CWM are provided.
update: Fixed. Whew. Thanks for the suggestions, especially, sfhub. Did as you said over in the other thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728&page=26 ... will post followups there but basically flashed the stock rom in odin and phone booted back up like nothing ever happened. Well, the only difference really was the media scanner took a considerable time longer than usual on that first clean boot. Thank you so much, again, and see you over in the other thread w/ a few more questions...

Man,
For 3 days, i've been reading and getting distracted and confusing mysef with this OG EVO.
Can I backup with nandroid, TB, or mybackup?- which is the most current and reliable?
Can I backup to dropbox, drive, or flash card cos I'm temporarily without my 6ram HP and accessing this info through my phone and a different pc.
Do I back up before visiting HTC DEV for the bootloader?
Where is the folder I'm supposed to put my recovery.img and .zip fies in for s-off functionality?
Which new, updated and most reliable recovery should i flash?
You got the time to tweet tips to me @niteridet?

Tell everyone a little bit more of whats going on. I still don't know what your problem is, be specific.
i think i need a book of this stuff.
I just want to be pointed in the right direction..I don't know much about tweaking gadgets, but i'm a fast learner and i'm more hands on then a visual observer.its hard for me to visualize specific steps of something, but i know as i get into a routine doing this, i'll be more comfortable and not so much a loof.
whats the correct order with the root and the best up to date one?
i want to tether internet and have something other then this boring setting customization option HTC gives us, and I want my phone to be smooth....Mybad, earlier I typed out a whole thread like it was a freakin novel and it randomly disappeared. wow.
Is it possible to flash a jb custom rom after first rooting OG? All these guides are in different locations and its constant flipping back and forth between directions and i lose track of what i'm doing because I get distracted easily. I need someone to hold my hand and watch over my shoulder to correct my every kink. is that even possible. I need training! What you got? :silly:
First off, you are thinking way, way to hard. Slow it down a notch and think things through. I would really recommend that you use Youtube. I mean, since you and me both are more of a visual type of person. Try this link first http://youtu.be/zEwEM641gBs
and or/ go to Youtube and type in How to root HTC EVO4G and find the most recent one.
Second choice is to actually find a "How To" on here, but like you said, you are more of a visual person, as am I also.
Rooting is overwhelming, with all the custom Roms, Kernels etc etc. Once you are rooted it basically gives you permission to do anything with your particular phone. With following the "How to root", the recovery is included. Basically, once I was rooted I found a Rom that I wanted that looked cool and looked suitable to my needs, I downloaded it, made a new folder on my SD card called "Rom" and transfered the Rom I downloaded from my PC to my Rom folder on my SD card. I then went into recovery mode, made a backup, wiped all 3 (factory reset-dalvik cache & cache), went to flash zip, went to my Rom folder, found the Rom I put in my folder and flashed it. Re-boot and BOOM you now have a custom Rom! If need be, send me an E-Mail. [email protected] and I can help you some more.
Thanks, I'll do that and let you know Nick.:good:
Hello all, I have refered to this site many times and now need assistance with my MT3G
First off, thank you zeubea and the rest for all your work. I tried to ask my question in the developers section but...
I hope you see this post and can guide me along.
Background: I'm ok w pc's, have built and repaired/recovered my own for sometime. But this phone stuff is new teritory to me.
I got my slide mebbe 3 yrs ago? But as phones go I have yet to find one that I like as much. The key board captures my hunt n peck thumb style intuitivly. The weight and feel, and size, seems as right as can be, for me. The only thing I disliked was the carrier
I had studied, and studied this site and others trying to learn how to root. This isnt the best phone to learn on huh lol. So after asking several associated at outlet malls (soory, we can't assist you with that type of request) I found a guy at a pc store that confidently said "no problem, we can take care of that for you." Awesome! The price, $120 US. worth it to me.
2 weeks later, my phone was ready. He did great, I will lay out the specs below. But, when I asked if he could now do it again for less having done it once, his reply was " man, that was a @#$&^, I wont do it again, you have the only one that will come from our shop, but I assure you that you wont find anything like it at starbucks..." Wow...
So first, heres what I have, and then my problem..
Build number is: cm_espresso-userdebug 4.0.4 IMM76L
eng.zuebea.20120618.005058 test-keys
Version: 9-20120617-UNOFFICIAL-espresso
That probably tells you alot of where the phone is. In its apps screen I see dev toolsrom manager and superuser, along with several others.
The phone appears to function as described by the others at the same stage ie: the fn key works as long as it is held when using, no keyboard backlight wifi calling f/c's 4 times upon boot up (I LUV that little guy ) Screen keyboard a bit cut off etc...
So my problem: I was not provided a sdcard when I received my phone. Coulda sworn there was an 8 gb in it when I left it, but oh well. I have a new 8 gb sd card, sandisk. but dont know what to do. I dont want to lose the work that went into this phone. But I cant seem to download any apps from the market or play store
ALSO, I dont currently have a sim card, I plan on getting a pay as I go plan when I get this figured out.
I am unsure about the whole partitioning the sd card thing, as well as how to do it, and wether it is done with cwm or what? The guy who did it suggested titanium back up, but again, cant download. ( Yes I do have wifi at home and it connnects and browes internet superbly)
I have formatted the sd card to fat32, and see all sorts of apps running in cache.
I believe that is about it. I know this is a long read, but I wanted to be clear so you could assist. Thank you...
EDIT: I was assured that we did get S off..,.
update
New guy still here, and for all my reading, I dont feel my confidence level has increased any as far as messin with this phone. I kno I can do it once it all makes sense and maybe after a run thru it will seem easy.... "sigh", any input from you who have been there done that will be greatly appreciated.
Since my above post (this makes #2, 8 to go ), heres whats progressed.
I bought a T-Mob pay as you go SIm card and can now call and text with my phone. That much seems to work fine. I have a 8 gb micro sd card installed which was formatted fat 32 on my pc first. Befor I got the sim card, the phone would appear to download apps but they would never actually load, just went thru the motions. Now, with the sim installed, I get this dialog box from google stating several possible reasons that I'm not getting nothing from them at this time. Well I think I know what the problem is, just dont know how to fix it, which brings me to the last bit of update to include. I was able to get a reply from zeubea himself, and tho it was short and sweet, and I appreciate that he took time at all to assist, I am in need of help understanding what to do...

it is possible you have to reinstall the last version of cm9 for espresso and gapps, with proper wipes of /data /system and dalvik chache an /sdcard partitioning is no necessary for a testing setting. /sdcard partitioning is made with CWM
check in CWM thread in espresso threads or in other more active thread of similar devices as legend, wildfire s or aria.
I am working at ///////////// and this is the help I can give you. Greets.

So I am guessing its gapps that is preventing me from downloading apps. What I am asking for is a step by baby step proceedure, taking me by my hand and guide me thru all this so I learn without messing up. Please, if anyone can make sense of all this and assist, I'll be the most humble student ever...
Thank you...
As far as I am aware you don't need to root the phone after its been rooted (unless you flash T-mobile's kernel .. but lets not get ahead of ourselves). Rooting unlocks the phone's admin and allows you to install and uninstall things you wouldn't be able to without admin control. However, rooting does NOT unlock a network locked phone. There are some ways to do this I'm sure, but rooting a phone itself would not automatically unlock it from a network if it was locked to begin with. Now lets assume your phone is both rooted and network unlocked. Now you can install custom ROMS (Operating Systems), etc.
I would highly recommend you download Cyanogenmod over other custom ROMs in terms of stability, ease of use and beginner-user friendly. You can get it here -> link. This guide by the CM team gives full instructions -> link.
Most custom ROMs come without the Google Apps. To download and install apps, you need Google Play Story (previously known as Google Market), though other ways to install exist as well but are slightly more complicated. When you install a custom ROM, in most cases, you also need to install Google Apps AFTER installing the ROM. You do this the same way as installing a ROM, through CWM (Clockwork Mod recovery). Do you know how to do this? Read the guide above for details. Depending on what Android Version you have, you need to download the appropriate gapps (Google Apps) file and flash (i.e install) that after the ROM. This should install Market (or as its now known, Play) on your phone and will let you install apps.
You don't need an SD card to install. But this phone is notorious for its small space. Just turn the phone off (to be safe), take the battery cover off and insert an SD card into the phone. After boot, it should recognise and be able to use your card normally. It will not effect anything and you can move some apps to your SD card to save some space. However, this doesn't save as much as possible and so some users partition the SD card and use Apps or scripts to make the phone use the SD card as an extension of its phone memory and free up space.
I know whats a lot of information but do have a look at the link and then if you have any more questions, ask. Its quite easy to root and you really shouldn't have to pay someone (especially such a high amount) just to root your phone.
I hope I've been helpful. If so, don't forget the Thanks button!
