I'm coming from a nexus one so I'm not sure how this works. If I do a full wipe/factory reset before flashing a new ROM, does it wipe my "sd card" storage? How does one normally do a backup/restore on a device like this?
only wipes sdcard if you do a factory restore from the OS or unlock bootloader initially. wiping from clockwork doesn't wipe the sdcard partition

Clockwork doesn't wipe your sdcard. No need to worry.

What would formatting all the partitions through clockwork recovery accomplish. Would I be able to reload a rom through that if it did wipe everything. I'm trying to reformat the phone.

i'm pretty sure you can only wipe data and system, and if you wipe system then you need to flash a new rom as you won't be able to boot. other than that i don't think you can format the other stuff as that would be dangerous
So hey I'm gonna flash a new Rom and I wanted to know if it would format my SD?

Assuming you're rooted with CWM recovery flashed...
Wiping data using recovery will not flash sdcard.
Should you do a factory reset within the OS or explicitly through recovery, only then will it wipe sdcard.
Flashing a ROM on top of what you have (just that) will not wipe SDcard.
Thank you that's a perfect answer.

no it wont format your sd
Just got a T999 GS3 today. Already rooted and installed TWRP. I do not have an External SD card, so I will be putting the ROM that I want to flash (CM10 Stable) on internal SD card. But since I have to WIPE everything before I install the Custom ROM, how do I make sure that I don't wipe the custom ROM install zip as well?
Do I just do a WIPE of cache, dalvik cache, and system? And make sure that I do not wipe internal storage?
Or is there something else to this?
Thanks!!
Do a factory reset wipe system then wipe both caches install ROM wipe both caches again and fix permissions you should be good.

No, there is a seperate option for that.
1. Factory reset
2. Flash ROM and various files
3. reset dalvik cache and cache
4. Reboot
Easy as that
Which method you followed to root? I just got the phone and look ing for the easy way to root. I heard a lot about lost the IMEI so I'm kind of worry
Thanks all. I'm now running CM10 stable and all seems to be well.

I actually used this method: http://www.androidrootz.com/2012/10/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx.html. It worked fine and took about 20 seconds. I then used Goo Manager to install TWRP, and then I installed CM10 and Gapps. Whole process took literally about 10 minutes. Wasn't even aware of the IMEI issue prior to rooting. I will have to remember to backup my IMEI sometime today.
Hey there,
Running CM10 on an AT&T Galaxy S3 and I want to wipe my phone to reinstall a fresh copy of cm10. Haven't done this too often so my question is,
In CWM, is it enough to simply Wipe Data/Factory Reset to achieve a full wipe, or do I need to format the phone? If I format the phone, would I need to re-root it again?

Okay, so I have a sprint galaxy s3 which I rooted the way that is shown on this page through odin and clockwork mod. I only rooted just to get tether, but now I want to try a custom rom for the first time and it says I have to wipe cache and reset wipe data (reset factory settings) inside of the bootloader before flashing the rom. My question is, will my backed up copy of recovery which I made last week be erased if it is on the internal memory card as I do not have an external sd card. I just have the 16gb galaxy s3. I ask this in case the rom does not flash properly so I can flash my recovery again and save my phone from being a brick. I have read and it seems to say all of the data in the internal memory will be wiped, so will that wipe my backed up recovery which is inside the clockworkmod folder

While I don't know the answer to that question I do highly recommend you get an external SD, even like an 8 GB which is what I'm using right now. It acts as a safety net, I keep all my valuables on there in case something does go wrong (nandroids, music, ROMs). Practice safe flashing!
I do know, however, that as long as you simply do a factory reset you do retain your pictures and music, but as for nandroids I am not sure
