Hi, i've been looking around to help my friend with his new desire,
I would like to see if this works, according to my research...
If I ran the phone through unrevoked, would this root the phone?
And in turn, let us install rom manager + clockwork mod?
I don't have much experience around here as I am still looking about rooting my nexus
Hope you can help
Details needed.
Bootloader info, phone info...
Sent from my customized HTC Desire using TTP
I'm gonna have to ask about the bootloader info, but it is currently running stock (latest) which I think is 2.2?
EDIT: How do you get into the bootloader? Is it power+ volume down?
Yes.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
If its running 2.2, chances are very high that you can root it with unrevoked. Make sure the hBOOT version is 0.93.xxxx

If its the same as mine, yes unrevoked will do. However, i was having issues with CwM before so now im using amon ra recovery.just a heads up

Ye, thats right, I just found out that it is 0.93
So my plan on my original post will work?
EDIT: Do we need S-off? And how does this affect the phone?

It will work. As long as the drivers required are properly installed. And you don't need s-off unless you are planning to change the boot partitions (eg. Change from Stock hBOOT to CM7r2 hBOOT to get more space for apps)

If your still not 100% sure I don't think you should even try rooting your friends phone. You'll need the htc usb drivers installed on pc, make sure the htc sync apps is not installed.
Use unrevoked to root and install cwm recovery, from there you can install any of the great roms.

Please read the rooting faq in my signature. There's also a guide there which incorporates pre requisite information which (for some unknown reason) is missing from most other guides.
But read the faq too. It's not about blindly following steps. It's about understanding the process and what you are doing.

I try to get my desire S-OFF'ed (it's PV4 and 0.93.0001 hboot). But when i try to flash the hboot via fastboot the singature gets rejected. And revolutinary method is not working too (i get the error that " Your device ace, with hboot 0.93.0001 is not supported at this time").
Any help?
COULD SOME1 GIME THE LINK OF AN OFFICIAL RUU THAT WOULD UPDATE MY HBOOT TO

Yes, ace is desire he and I would highly advise against using revolutionary if you have the desire hd

A great place to go is cyanogenmod.com and look at the wiki, they go step by step of how to get s-off, eng-off and everything else you would need, but you do need to know if you are using desire or desire hd

No need to go cyanogenmod.com, xda also provides something like this:

I didn't have the xda link off the top of my head, so thank you for that.

So why my HBOOT says its a BRAVO huh? I know its a desire because the name on the box, hboot and working roms of desire. IS IT POSSIBLE TO RE-ROOT AND S-OFF BY UPGRADING THE HBOOT TO THE GOOD VERSION?
From personal experience on a Desire, messing with the HBoot can have a chance of bricking the device. I got stuck where I could only enter commands through fastboot and adb, then tried everything possible to get it back to no avail.

Why don't you root and get with s-off unrevoked (root) and alpharev 1.8 (s-off)? Alpharev 1.8 supports the hboot version of your desire:

I know. It should be rooted because i've installed a custom ROM. But for some reason i cant flash an alpharev HBOTT. The fastboot says that singature gets rejected.

That was not my question. My question was, why you don't use alpharev live cd to get s-off? You wrote you could not go s-off with revolutionary. So you must be still s-on. And with s-on you cannot use fastboot.

So you burned the iso with magiciso on a cd and the computer does not boot from it? Is that right?
If not, could you explain this sentence "Evertime i try to make that live cd with MagicIso my dvd rom opens up" a little more (what exactly do you do?), please? Because I do not understand it.
I found you had to have a stock rooted rom installed to use alpharev 1.8 i followed the instructions from here and all worked first time

Try the easy rooting toolkit. Look at the xda bookmarks in my sig for a link. Not a promise, but worth a try.
I does all that writed on instructions and my device reboots, thats all? How can I check does my device rooted, I know that maybe very stupid, but I just started
Did it take about 5-10 minutes? If it did then it probably worked, but if it didn't then it probably didn't.
To be sure, install this on your phone...
https://market.android.com/details?id=jackpal.androidterm
Then run it and type su and press enter. It should tell you that the terminal emulator app is asking for superuser access. That means that you're rooted. If it doesn't ask then you're not.
Sorrow "permission denied"... What can I do more?
Have you tried looking in the Desire HD forum?

Why do people always go for the hardes possible option??
Use the HTC Unlock Bootloader again and lock the bootloader.
Reboot into hboot. The phone should read SHIP S-ON or ENG S-ON.
Download AAHK (advanced ace hack kit) from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821
Read the instructions and EFFIN MANUAL carefully, many times if necessary.
Let AAHK do it's thing.
After that, your phone is rooted and in hboot should read SHIP S-OFF or ENG S-OFF. The stock ROM will still be present. AAHK automatically generates a Gold Card and installs recovery. Through recovery flash any ROM you like from the Dev section.

yep .. desire s appears on video but as you can read in the memo associated in the same youtube page it works even on "HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire, HTC Aria, HTC Incredible S, HTC Droid Incredible 2, HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Evo 4G, HTC View, HTV Flyer, HTC Sensation, HTC Evo 3D and the myTouch 4G" (the memo contains also text of all procedure ..
I think is interesting for the bad_boys question, first is a all-in-one procedure to SOFF, Recovery acquisition and Root, after becouse to root a Desire already on GB require a more complicate procedure respect a froyo based one.
Revolutionary does not root your phone a jmclue said. It uses temp root (I believe) to gain s-off and flash a custom recovery.
The easiest way to obtain root after using revolutionary is to flash an already rooted custom rom.
If you want to root your current rom I think there is a zip file you can flash to do this.
I personally rooted my desire and flashed recovery using an older version of unrevoked (I think it was 3.21). I s-off'ed using alpharev some months later. It is not necessary to be s-off to flash custom roms. If you can get it to work I personally think it is easier to use unrevoked as it is a one click solution. Read all the guides before attempting this however.

I also used unrevoked 3.21 .. but I'm not sure that it works on 2.3.3 (as - it seems - Revolutionary does) .. naturally another way is to come back on froyo.
Yes revolutionary is for 0.93.0001 & 1.02.0001 hboots and is very very simple and straight foward to use

S-off has nothing to do with android version on your phone or with root. Everything depends on your hboot version.
Revolutionary does the job with 0.93 and 1.02 hboot, for older versions of hboots Alpharev Reflash Utility should be used.
The problem with Unrevoked is that it cannot bypass never hboots to flash superuser to system.

imo jmcclue has given the right advice and dont do anything else. You can find detailed instructions in the guide he has referred to but the overall picture is like this:-
- Use revolutionary from revolutionary.io to get SOFF. As part of this process you will also get a custom recovery.
- Flash root package from revolutionary.io if you want to get root on current rom else choose a custom rom and flash from recovery.
Thats all
