Anyone get the built in wireless hotspot working?

I have a rooted Droid Incredible running Cyanogen 7. I have never been able to get the built in wireless hotspot functioning even when I was running Cyanogen 6. Here is what is happening:
I can turn on the wireless hotspot feature and my laptop is able to see the SSID. When I try to connect the connection is unsuccessful. It looks like it it hanging at obtaining an IP address.
I was able to get the Wireless Tether app from the market to work but when I use it I have to turn it on once then turn it off then turn it on once again in order to be able to connect to the SSID. The other issue is that when I activate it my notification bar shows the Wireless Tether connection active as well as an icon for the built in wireless tethering. Its not a big deal but it clutters my notification bar and it annoys me.
Can someone give me some help getting my build in wireless tethering working?
The problem with the built in tether is once you go over a certain limit verizon will start charging you, so I would recommend using the free tether app man.

What would be the difference between wireless tether app and the wireless tether built in to cm7? Why would Verizon charge for one but not the other?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Because Verizon gets notified when you use the built-in tether, if you use the one on the market they will beverages know.
I stopped using cm7 because of that same tether issue, but for me the internet wouldn't work at all, my pc would connect to the "android tether" just fine, but no internet feed.
killing in the name of...
As I understand it the only way you would be charged is if you're using Verizon's tethering app, which is separate from the built in tethering in CM7.
Yes, this is true, but even with that my pc and 360 would connect with it, but still no internet. But with any other Rom (stock included) it would work beautifully!!!!!

I noticed this for the first time today with CM7 which I installed on Friday. Will have yo try the new final to see if the wireless tether works. Would be very disappointed if it doesn't work! I don't want to go back to Virtuous.

I don't really use it but I tested it and it works fine for me.
I guess I don't really mind using the wireless tether app from the market but there are issues.
1. How do you stop both icons from showing in the notification tray?
2. How do you stop the app from showing updates with the new market? The newest versions don't work on the incredible.

Absolutely can't get tethering to work. Tried everything.

Jellybean 4.1.1
T-Mobile SIM
Kernel 3.0.31 -g6fb96c9
Build JR003C
Rooted using Wug's Root Toolkit v1.5.2
Permanent CWM installation
Running Root Check Basic shows my device does have root access.
1. The network doesn't even show up on any devices with the following programs:
Wireless Tether for Root Users: 3.1 BETA14
Wireless Tether for Root Users: whatever is on the Market right now
OpenGarden
Barnacle
When I click to see the log it says it can't be found.
2. Using the built-in hotspot function means I'm able to see and find the tethering network, but after connecting to it there is never internet access. I ran the built-in hotspot with the other tether programs both installed and uninstalled.
Encryption and Passwords are all set to off for both methods.
EDIT:
I erased everything. The following is on a brand new install of rooted Jellybean. NOTHING else has been installed on it yet other than unlocking and rooting it via Wug's.
Built-in hotspot works. Will this incur tethering charges on T-Mobile?
Barnacle - WIFI: Failed to connect to supplicant: No such file or directory. Stopped unexpectedly! Can't see the
Wireless Tether for Root Users: 3.1 BETA14 - can't see the tether's wifi
Open Garden - right after granting SU permission it crashes. On re-open it says "unable in install... (couldn't catch it before it disappeared). When I go to view the log I get unable to open log file. File doesn't exist!
Have you tried foxfi? Worked when I had T-Mobile. Just moved to verizon and it still works.

FoxFi does not work. Error starting WiFi tether. Please use Bluetooth DUN. This happens both when I have the WiFi already turned on or off.
After uninstalling a host of somewhat recommended VOIP products I got at least the built-in Hotspot and USB Tether features to work: uninstalled AutoAir (always ensures at least one of either 3G or WiFi is on to intercept VOIP calls), Plane Mode Tweaker (allows WiFi to still work in airplane mode), Y5 Battery Saver (automatically connects to known WiFi access points. Turns off WiFi automatically otherwise.
I'm not sure which one of the 3 apps above is the culprit.
But basically: none of the 3rd party tethering apps work.
Only the built-in apps work, and now I'm very concerned that I will be charged for tethering on my T-Mobile prepaid $30/month plan.
EDIT: The built-in WiFi tether works but grinds to a halt when you turn the screen of the phone off. When the screen is on it works better. USB tethering doesn't seem to be affected. I can't get Bluetooth DUN to work because my Win7 computer can't find the necessary drivers for the Nexus.
Don't worry about T-Mo charging you for tethering. If they detect tethering your web browser will display a message linking you to their website. Just don't stream any video or download any obscenely large (300 mb+) files and you should be fine.
I'm in the same boat sort. I can. Get blue tooth tethering to work but not WiFi. Keeps deselecting the enable WiFi in settings automatically. Is this not possible thru verizon even when rooted?

How exactly does att detect tethering? Can I vpn?

I am still on a grandfathered plan and would like to keep it.
When I connect to my work network, it routes all traffic... Vpn and random Internet traffic through the vpn tunnel..
If i tether while I'm connected to my vpn, can att detect it? I would think not since it's encrypted?? Or is there something I'm missing?
I'm worried that tethering would force it to use atts gateway/ip instead of the vpn.
Does anybody know?
Thank you!

guess i'll find out...
couldn't get wifi tethering working.. anytime i enabled it 'settings' would FC (maybe because i froze tethering provision apk?
so i tried foxfi - and that wifi tether would turn on - but it would change the routing tables of my vpn.. and use normal 4g/att internet
but i have bluetooth on my laptop!
connected to vpn on phone, enabled bluetooth DUN on foxfi - and on my pc when i check my ip on third party websites (i.e nwtools.com) , it shows the IP of my VPN....
so far so good, i hope they can't see this traffic.

[Help] No tethering & portable hotspot option in setting after updating to 6.0

I use many file sharing apps like Sender & Share it. While it uses hotspot tethering for Sharing file, after recent update to 6.0 there is no option for tethering & portable hotspot in setting. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
i have the same problem. there is no setting for hotspot option.
Yeah. thanks Google ! Maybe on Android 7.0 you can remove wifi and gps aswell and on 8.0, remove Play Store

WiFi hotspot or tethering works on devices which have other ways of connecting to internet aside from WiFi connection so the internet can be shared from that other source (like cellular data access) through WiFi. So technically the availability of the WiFi hitspot or tethering option on the previous vesrsions of Android was meaningless and Google made the right decision to remove it from devices which are incapable of using it in Marshmallow. By the way, I beleive applications you mentioned in your post use being-on-the-same-network and WiFi Direct technologies to share files between devices not WiFi Hotspots or tethering.
Ok but how about usb tethering? That had to be removed also ?

I think Google believes that nowadays every PC or Laptop has WiFi adapter by default so they can use their own WiFi adapter to connect to the internet.
well my laptop's wifi doesnt working and i was using my n7's usb tethering to connect internet and now after the patch it is gone. i just dont understand why. I was even able to share my files with hotspot to everyone around me and i was able to use airdoid or wifi transfer without any internet connection. I will go back to lollipop 5.1.1..

Bypass T-Mobile Tether limit

Does anyone have a working method that will allow to use WIFI tether on the Tmo network?
Unlike most carriers Tmobile and Metro PCS don't block hotspot however they do limit you to 5/8 GB after that they slow you down.
Im using Android N 7.0 and I've spent countless hours trying to bypass the T-Mobile tether throttle but most guides I've found are from like 2014 that no longer work.
What works:
- PdaNet+ APP
Download it from the play store and using it through USB with "Hide tether usage" is the fastest way to enable tether, HOWEVER its through USB PC only.
- TetherVPN APP
First download the app from the play store.
Second get any VPN provider (paid or free app like opera VPN, turbo VPN or Open VPN)
Third connect to the VPN network -> tun on your default hotspot from setting -> open TetherVPN app and click "Wifi Tether" -> Profit Side Note: this option works with iPhone latest IOS update but you need jailbreak PMme)
Although this second method is wireless the speed limits are significantly slow some as slow as 3mbps compared to 40+Mbps I regularly get.
Hope this helps!
There no "Wifi Tether" optiion in TetherVPN for me, any ideas?
I found a way to do it, email me [email protected]
Just wanted to say thanks for this:

Can I be let in on this method? The native tether toggle works, I just need to bypass the metro splash screen.
