I have a rooted Droid Incredible running Cyanogen 7. I have never been able to get the built in wireless hotspot functioning even when I was running Cyanogen 6. Here is what is happening:
I can turn on the wireless hotspot feature and my laptop is able to see the SSID. When I try to connect the connection is unsuccessful. It looks like it it hanging at obtaining an IP address.
I was able to get the Wireless Tether app from the market to work but when I use it I have to turn it on once then turn it off then turn it on once again in order to be able to connect to the SSID. The other issue is that when I activate it my notification bar shows the Wireless Tether connection active as well as an icon for the built in wireless tethering. Its not a big deal but it clutters my notification bar and it annoys me.
Can someone give me some help getting my build in wireless tethering working?
The problem with the built in tether is once you go over a certain limit verizon will start charging you, so I would recommend using the free tether app man.

What would be the difference between wireless tether app and the wireless tether built in to cm7? Why would Verizon charge for one but not the other?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Because Verizon gets notified when you use the built-in tether, if you use the one on the market they will beverages know.
I stopped using cm7 because of that same tether issue, but for me the internet wouldn't work at all, my pc would connect to the "android tether" just fine, but no internet feed.

As I understand it the only way you would be charged is if you're using Verizon's tethering app, which is separate from the built in tethering in CM7.
Yes, this is true, but even with that my pc and 360 would connect with it, but still no internet. But with any other Rom (stock included) it would work beautifully!!!!!

I noticed this for the first time today with CM7 which I installed on Friday. Will have yo try the new final to see if the wireless tether works. Would be very disappointed if it doesn't work! I don't want to go back to Virtuous.

I don't really use it but I tested it and it works fine for me.
I guess I don't really mind using the wireless tether app from the market but there are issues.
1. How do you stop both icons from showing in the notification tray?
2. How do you stop the app from showing updates with the new market? The newest versions don't work on the incredible.

First post. So, I have a Evo but I won a iPad (wifi only) online the other day and i'm thinking about keeping it or selling it. I know Sprint has a Hotspot option that you can use on the phone but I don't want to pay $30/month for it which is crazy in my opinion. I downloaded EasyTether off the appstore so I can tether for free which is great on my laptop, but if I keep the iPad and take it around with me i want to be able to get online with it, so it would be great to have the Hotspot functionality on my phone. I know you can activate hotspot functionality by rooting the Evo, but I just updated to 2.2 and as far as I am aware there is no 2.2 root option yet.
So in the meantime I guess I was just wondering if anyone who has a iPad uses the Evo's hotspot functionality. I was also curious in general how it performs over 3G with wifi devices and if there is any option like Easy Tether so you can use hotspot functionality for free until there is a root for 2.2 on Evo?
Thanks for any input/answers and I look forward to contributing to the forums.
If You Root Your Phone You'd Now Be Able To Use Froyo (2.2) With Wireless Tether 2.0.5-pre7 I'm Actually Posting This From My LapTop On Fresh 3.1.0.1 Using The Above Named Wireless Tether.. We took a trip to the mountains a week ago. I used the EVO hotspot utility to connect my laptop and my wife's ipad and my son's ipod touch to the internet all at the same time! Worked like a charm! just remember to change the default setting at set a new SSID and password.
I believe that if you can connect with your laptop you should be able to connect with your iPad. I've always been able to connect with my iPad whether it was adhoc or AP mode.
Well i started paying for the 30 bucks option becuase the free wifi cap my speeds real bad and i was rooted back then but now im stock with rooted icons wierd but dont work but works awsome the hotspot for me i have 3 360 coneected amd 2 ps3 and my msi netbook connected and works bad ass i love it yea some lag but it ok for me

Well, I can connect my Laptop to my Evo via USB using EasyTether Lite so I can get online with my laptop for free but I need free Hotspot functionality so I can use it with my iPad, but idk what I could do since I updated my Evo to 2.2.
I don't know if this will help you but there is a chance you can downgrade your Evo and then root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
hold your ipad differently, or buy a case.

I find people that type with caps on the first letter of every word to be very annoying. And there's no point.

I know that iPods (3rd gen) aren't able to connect to AP networks, since I've hosted from my laptop before and it couldn't see it.

If you want the iPad, keep it. It sound like the iPad can connect to even AP infrastructure networks. Although I'm pretty sure the Hotspot app, and wireless tether, both aren't AP network (although I don't know what it hosts, that's not my area ).
Basically, Hotspot would work if you felt like $30. Otherwise I'd wait for 2.2 to get rooted.
I honestly don't know what I'm saying anymore cause I'm watching tv and writing this. And there's models...
Oops I wasn't aware that EasyTether was done through USB. In that case, since you don't have root and upgraded to 2.2, you can either set up internet sharing on your laptop and connect using adhoc mode, or pay the $30 for the official tethering.

or you can pay $0 to root your phone, install any 2.2 ROM, and use android wifi tether.
Froyo (Android 2.2) has Wi-fi Hotspot capability: no need to root
Froyo (Android 2.2) has Wi-fi Hotspot capability: no need to root
Either 1: Open up your Apps page and look for the widget "Wi-Fi Hotspot" (on my Desire it is placed just before the YouTube widget"
or 2: open Settings, Wireless & networks and select "Portable Wi-fi Hotspot"
This has allowed me to connect my iPad via my Desire's data connection.
the desire on official froyo unrooted has a hotspot widget preinstalled as mentioned above.
my friends iphone and laptop spotted it fine. so no reason why an ipad wouldnt find it.
i note that evo can connect to many devices as can be seen from other posts here, but the htc desire has a max limit of 2 devices via the wifi hotspot at a time, although i dont know if you could connect more devices by using usb tether and bluetooth tether at the same time too. you dont need apps from anywhere for wifi or usb tether on 2.2 official version. i dont know if 2.2 allows bluetooth tether but if satnav devices can piggy back to net connection on phones i dont see why tethering cant be done but might be slow. there are apps on cnet for wifi and blueetooth tethering (cnet editor reviewed apps).
I believe the Sprint approved version of Froyo has Android WiFi removed and replaced by their own app.
Now that it's possible to root, I installed wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9.
My iPad connects, but no Internet access!
Ipad works fine
I use the Wireless Tether with my IPAD all the time works great I am using Fresh 3.3.0.1
Hotspot and wireless tether are both AP, zune hd doesn't do adhoc and i was able to connect to my evo with it
Does anyone have a working version of that app yet?

Great question for the app section... To my knowledge Barnacle works for some but can be 'finicky'. Otherwise, no.
Yea I couldn't get barnacle to work

here is the the one I'm using for TeamFenix 1.7.1 which is based off of one of the CM nightlies, and I haven't had any problems at all, just downloaded, installed using Astro File Manager and was up an running on my netbook. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre3-test3.apk
barnacle ususally works. just disable wpa_supplicant. go to barnacle's settings and check skip wpa_supplicant. ran it for a few hours on windows. works well.
Barnacle is the only one that people claims works. I haven't been able to get any Ad-hoc to work with Linux, but Windows works with Barnacle.
Not related to wireless, but there is built-in USB tethering which I prefer if I can get signal at my laptop. Just plug in the USB, go to Settings->Wireless & Networks->Tethering and check 'USB Tethering'. If it prompts for drivers tell Windows to manually use 'Remote NDIS Device for Internet Sharing' by 'Microsoft Incorporated'.
I'm trying to find a working wifi tether app for cm 6.0 as well. Ive tried Barnacle and it doesnt work even when I disable wpa supplicant. The computer sees it and connects but no webpages will load.
I also tried a few different wifi tether apk's from googles site and everyone makes my phone crash and reboot.
wireless app works for my ipad or any other device. I just can not get to tether to another android phone, it used to work no problem. The phone will not even recgonize the wireless network. Right now i have a samsung droid charge and tmobile g2x. I have also tried with a samsung vibrant. no combination works. But they will work with ipad and laptop. sometimes one phone might not have good service, so I would like to use wireless in them situations. Thanks
Hi,
I'm a new owner of a G2. I've been looking for a way to get USB tethering to work, but haven't managed to find the info on it. I saw in the wireless tether thread that sherifone gives a shoutout to teferi for "his original USB tether script", but couldn't find the post by teferi.
Is it possible to get USB tethering working on the G2? How?
thanks,
del
Your best bet would be to gain root using VISIONary, and use the app "android-wired-tether" from Google Code

Pdanet also works

Oh, I thought I read the wired tether was not working due to some kernel issue.
Thanks. I'll give it a shot.

I use pdanet and wifi tether both work.
goodluck
In case anyone else is wondering. I tried wired tether and it did not work.
Windows 7 could not locate a driver for it. The device is displayed in the device manager with the yellow icon overlay.
On the Mac, it detects a network adapter but expects account information and some other info.
Wireless tether seems to work, but it was very slow for me. That's probably because the reception at work seems to suck. It spends more time on EDGE than 3G.
I may try PDANet eventually. But to be honest, I wanted to tether at work (the client's site) because their connection sucks pretty bad. But with the speed I'm getting, I may just stick to the client's network.
I have a Sprint TP2 and have loaded the latest FRX07 build. Under Wireless & Network Settings, there's an option for tethering and portable wifi hotspot .
I have tried this feature and it works great, including on my non-rooted Asus Transformer, which doesn't accept Ad Hoc connections.
I realize most people use third party applications like Barnacle to wifi tether. Barnacle however creates an Ad Hoc, which can be used by the laptop, but not the Transformer.
Is there a reason to avoid the built in feature in Android?

I prefer the built-in wifi hotspot as well - the only reason to avoid it would be if it doesn't work - some have issues when you disable wifi tethering, it won't re-enable at best, and at worst it reboots the phone.
I just tried it and couldn't get it to work, but I have in the past - if it's working for you great! I don't see any reason you can't continue using it. Like you already said, it throws up an actual AP as opposed to an ad-hoc network - which is fantastic.
The wifi tether worked in the past (frx05 I think). The only gotcha is that whenever you went to activate WiFi tethering, you would need to go into the settings and hit OK without changing anything.
The reason for this is that the WiFi driver seems to ignore the settings passed on by the tether app until it's reapplied via hitting OK. The only other thing to note is that AFAIK the power-down code from the WiFi is still missing, so it might create a power drain even after turning off tether(wifi).

Thanks for the responses.
I boot into android and once it finishes initializing, I select the hotspot to on, and it connects to the Transformer. All the apps appear to have access to internet.
Thanks for the tip on the powerdrain. I'll keep an eye on it.
I"m finding it very glitchy with the FRX07 and the default wifi tethering. However, Barnacle wifi tether is working without any problems. I even got a reboot once from using the default tethering. Just thought I let you guys know. Not sure if the 3rd party app will be slower or not though.

Barnacle works, but uses ad-hoc instead of an actual AP. The built-in wifi tethering never really quite worked right...
There's also the XDAndroid wifi tethering app - just like Barnacle, it creates an adhoc network.
So Im using wireless tether, and for some odd reason it brings up two wireless networks connections, the default wireless tether "AndroidTether" and another which is the name of the stock sprint hotspot app connection, i cant connect to it unless i switch apps, and again using to hotspot app brings up two connections, unable to connect to the other. i removed the hotspot app but its still doing it id like it to stop lol.
wireless tether form the market today, haven't changes anything else with the rom but remove some bloat...
Edit: scratch that, i can connect to either signal.... weird.
BUMP, nanroided back to the one i man during rooting pushed SU, installed Wireless tether, same thing, is this just intended behavior?
