[Q] ClockworkMod recovery E:Can't mount CACHE:... - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I rooted a friend's HTC desire a while ago but never installed a custom ROM, it's still sitting on the stock sense ROM.
Recently they got an OTA update and they tried to install it in the regular way, which of course didn't work. I tried to apply the update via ROM manager and then clockworkmod recovery but I keep getting errors:
E:Can't find MISC
E:Can't mount CACHE:/recovery/command
...
I also get errors when trying to backup or trying to install the update, including the file doesn't exist and can't mount sdcard (photo attached). However, I am able to browse the sd card fine from within clockworkmod (i.e., when selecting "install ROM from SD card" option).
I have tried flashing different versions of clockworkmod to no avail, always the same issue (tried 2.x and 5.x)
Do you guys have any idea what I can do? Note that this is a friend's phone so I don't have unlimited access to it, it will take me a while to try different things out.
Thanks!

Your friend's Deire might be a PVT4 one. These hardwarerevisions so not work with CWM Recovery.
So Flash 2.3.3 RUU (save important data before you do that) and use Revolutionary to set your friend's phone S-OFF. Than flash a different recovery via fastboot (most recommended are 4EXT or RMD) and then flash the superuser.zip from Revolutionarywebsite to give your friend's Desire root.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
Note that I already have S-OFF and root on the phone, I did it using Unrevoked and it worked like a charm. Clockworkmod recovery is installed, it just won't actually work. So I can't actually flash anything right now, not even stock ROM.
I'll try install Amon Ra using ROM manager and see how we go from there.

Apologies, here is the promised attached photo.

Look for 4Ext Recovery thread here on the Desire Section. You will be able to get an apk from that post. Install it and download the 4Ext Recovery using that app. Its better than Clockworkmod.
via xda app

4ext.net and install from the application itself (recovery updater), and I agree, is MUCH better than Colckworkmod

[Q] help!! files cannot be found in clockworkmod recovery.

Hey everyone. I need help here, I am still a noob. Currently I am using a htc desire. i managed to root my desire after setting the install location back to 0. Previously i did what this website ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13557827#post13557827) said, to move my apps to sd since i am still using unrooted stock rom.
Apparently, after rooting, the clockworkmod recovery was not installed properly. it says that some files cannot be found. So i end up rebooting the device.
this is what that is shown in the recovery mode.
clockworkMod Recovery v 2.5.07
E: Can't find MISC:
E: Can't mount CACHE : recovery / command
E: Can't find MISC
E: Can't mount CACHE : recovery / log

I tried to update the fake flash for S-ON users from
udK's thread on the clockworkmodrecovery. But the same things as above still appear on the recovery screen. i also downloaded the update.zip file from leedriod and update thru zip from recovery mode. the same thing is shown on the screen. So, Can i still use the clockworkmod recovery to flash custom rom? P.S. i had rooted my desire, the next thing left to do is to S-OFF my desire, partition my sd card and flash the custom rom. What should i do next?
this is the information when i check my hboot version.

since i am using a stock rom, previously i had received an update OTA. I can't seem to find any RUU which the software number 2.13.707.2, i can only find 2.13.707.1. Can i use this one in case anything happens? if not, can anyone give me the link to download this RUU?
Thank you for helping!!
Did you try to reformat your SD card to FAT32? I suggest you do so (unix preferred, as windows isn't as tedious) and do a clean install.

no, i have not reformatted my sd card yet. was planning to partition my card after rooting. i was following the [Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED [04/04/11][Video Tut] to root my hp. currently i stopped after the rooting step since the clockworkmod recovery is not installed properly. what do you mean by clean install??
can i use amon_ra recovery as a custom recovery for unrevoked 3 and use unrevoked 3 to flash the img ? currently my desire is still S-ON. I had downloaded the recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621 .

Yes you can give that a try though, I highly doubt it has to do with the recovery itself as you were able to start CWM.
You have PVT4 device, which means CWM 2.5.0.7 won't work on it. Either use AmonRa 2.0.1 or CWM 3.x.x.x

I tried to update the CWM 3.x.x.x by using recovery via zip file. After that, same thing happen. Smth is missing and the next time I enter into recovery is 2.5.0.7 again .. what should I do ? Currently my software number is 2.13.707.2 , can I flash the RUU with the software number 2.13.707.1 ? Might want to start from scratch again.

I never experienced problems with that on my PVT4 device. Also has to do with nand alignment?

But my desire had never been rooted before until yesterday. The only thing I did was changing the install location via pc for unrooted stock Rom. But I did not change the location back when I start to root my desire. After that I change the location back to 0 and the root was successful until the installation of CWM recovery.

may i ask, can i use a RUU with software 2.13.707.1 to flash over my current 2.13.707.2. my current one is a rooted stock which is stuck halfway due to the CWM recovery's missing file.
I had exactly the same thing about a week ago and in the end used alpharev
created a ISO CD and installed alpharev and cwm that way was really simple
Once it did its trick took about 5min I was s-off and had working clockwork
Google it worked perfect

oh ya.. currently, i had burn the alpharev into my cd. but my computer wouldn't seem to boot from cd. the options i had in my setup is choose priority of hard disc ( which the cd/ dvd rom is not there. and the device to boot from, only has the hard disc and removable device. i chose removable device but nothing happen at all. what can i do ?
If you can't boot into CD then your in a bit of trouble trying to use the CD option ?
Maybe the USB option might work for you, all i had to do on my pc was F12 on boot select cd once the screen went dark plugged my phone in and followed the onscreen instructions really was that simple.
Have you actually shut down the PC rather than restart ?

Thats up to you, you can always flash back to the 2.4.1.
Personally i think it depends what your after i'm running a GingerBread rom on my desire HD which is pukka good but if battery life is your main priority certainly for the Desire HD the froyo roms still last longer imo, but i can only speak from the DHD perspective as thats the phone i have may be different for the desire...
To avoid later problems flash cwm 3.0.2.8 with fastboot

(Q) Recovery

I read somewhere that Alpharev X will also install a recovery and you can just use ROM manager after the process is done to get CWM 4. Is this correct?
Alpharev attempted to push a recovery but failed for me. I was using windows. I pushed a recovery manually then opened rom manager and it made me reflash recovery. It wasn't that bad. There's a good video in the root guide on androidforums that shows what to do if recovery fails with Alpharev.

[Q] Switching to another recovery

I would like to switch to another recovery without switching ROM nor HBOOT.
I would like to use PB99IMG.zip file
with 2 files inside
android-info.txt - the same as in all cases
and
recovery.img from recovery i wish to flash
Inspiartion from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408936
file structure and android-info.txt from here:
www.4ext.net/PB99IMG.zip
I have not tried that method so i ask.
THE QUESTIONS:
Is it possible to do it as described?
Is it a safe way?
Is it a right way?
Will I be able to switch between recoveries that way or just update versions?
4EXT Recovery Touch is a nice peace but I would recommend using the classic version until the final version gets finished, but if you feel up to it... than go for it. I had a go myself and it worked fine.
I dont think you should have any trouble switching between recoveries and keep the rom and hboot I did it a few times myself. The best thing to do is to do a nandroid backup with the recovery you have than switch to the new recovery and if for some reason your rom gets messed up (cause you never know) you can still switch back to the old recovery and restore the rom. (as long as you have the backup of the rom on the sd card you should be fine)
Thank you for your answer.
4EXT Recovery Touch was just an example. Question is this type of PB99IMG.zip file is the proper solution?
You can either flash a zipped version of the recovery via your old recovery, or flash the recovery image (.img) via fastboot (s off needed).
The method you describe, is flashing via hboot. You need to place that zip on the root of your sd and enter the hboot menu
I remember 4ext has an application which flashes the recovery for you, though you need root for it.

I used android flasher to flash 4EXT recovery. Easy to use. More info can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
Sorry if this is wrong place to ask...
What do other recoveries offer that's better? I don't even remember which one I'm using, s-off'd and root with revolutionary some time ago so I think it's theirs.
Looking at the thread that inspired the thread starter, the obvious is the touch capability, but other than that seems to offer same functions. Is it maybe more reliable/faster?
Thanks for all!

I used 4EXT due to the fact that instead of scrolling up and down with trackpad/volume buttons (CWM), 4EXT ui is touch, easier to navigate.
Why 4ext?!
4Ext furthermore offers a lot of new functions:
- USB unbrick
- Partition SD card
- Check Alignment
Full List of Features:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20642552&postcount=2
I used 4EXT Recovery Control from the Market to switch to 4EXT, if you just wanna test I'd suggest the free 4EXT Recovery Updater (Get both from http://www.4ext.net/)

[Q] Problem with CWM 5.0.2.0 stable installation.

Actually, I got no place to post my question. So, I thought of starting a new thread.
I have installed CyanogenMod 7 on my HTC buzz by downgrading its stock rom as it suffered a OTA update before. I guess you guys r well aware about the process.
During the downgrade, my phone got Revolutionary CWM 4.x.x.x by default. In fact, I have flashed CM7 using revolutionary.
Now, CM7 comes with ROM Manager built-in and I tried to install CWM 5.0.2.0 recovery right form the GUI. The update.zip was downloaded. I could update it manually form my recovery options.
But, it was not stable. Each time I boot into recovery, Revolutionary CWM shows up, instead of CWM 5.0.2.0. To use it again, I have update the package each and every time.
Is is quite normal? Or, I am missing something? Plz help with advice.:crying:
I did this via Rom manager. Not through Recovery.

Yes this is normal for ROM manager as using ROM manager is only giving you a temp recovery over your stock ( in your case revolutionary cwm ) to get the cwm 5.0.2.0 you want you need to get either a PC49IMG.zip version of the cwm and use the boot loader method, use ADB/Fast boot method or use the terminal emulator method.
Tutorials are all over the wildfire thread and so are the necessary files etc.

That what u have to flash is temporary.
For permanent recovery, copy the recovery onto your pc.
Turn on the willy in hboot mode, goto fastboot connect usb
Type fastboot flash recovery name.zip
here name is the name of recovery zip AS IT IS.

CWM update not persistent on HTC desire!! Frustrating!!!

Hi guys,
Searched a lot on the forum but to no avail.
Strange problem with my HTC desire.
My CWM update is not persisting for some odd reason.
I am currently on CWM 2.5.0.7
I am constantly trying to flash the latest CWM touch from recovery.
Steps followed:
- Booted into recovery
- Install zip from sd card
- Selected the latest cwm zip
It shows installation succeeded.
Then when I reboot to recovery, I am still in 2.5.0.7
Really frustrating!! Please help.
Thanks.
Try flashing from fastboot. Use the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img . That should do the trick. And post in questions thread next time please.

- There's a Q&A section to ask questions...
- You haven't searched very hard. You must be S-OFF to upgrade or change recovery, search 'revolutionary' method.
- As above 4EXT is better for Desire, as it partitions the sdcard properly unlike CWM.
Apologies for not posting in the questions section..
Thanks for all your inputs, actually came back to this device after a couple of years.
Still works as a charm.. Got S-Off using revolutionary method and then flashed 4ext recovery.. All Good!!!
