Hello, I have ran into a problem, I have just unlocked my bootloader on my Desire HD. It says it is unlocked when i go into the H-boot (power and volume down). But the main problem is that i cannot root my phone. I have used various programs(HTC super tool, Oneclickroot and one other) and it says its rooted but when i reboot there is no super user installed, and cannot use titanium backup and busy box beacuse it cant find root, even with superuser from the market. When it was trying to root, it came across a few errors like "failed beacuse system is read only or somthing along those lines, when trying to Root the phone. When i was using HTC Super Tools v3 there were various "adb server is out of date restaring" but the main thing is that it says "cannot find directory su" or somthing like that when i am perm rooting it. I dont understand why this is happening beacuse, and i havnt seen this happen to any one else...
Any Ideas?
Thanks
EDIT
For those who may also have the same problem, this is my solution, that isn't rooting:

Here new RUU for Hero

Enjoy!
What language it is for Fr stands for French !!!!
Is this specific to Orange GSM Hero?
stuck up
Using goldcard I installed this RUU on Hero
Should say sorry to myself as this RUU updated the bootloader and I am stuck up and not able to root it again or load any other RUU even though I am using the goldcard.
If I donot use goldcard it gives error of customerID and if I use goldcard it gives bootloader error (error 140)
So not able to install custom recovery or this is not accepting the super user or terminal emulator.
It seems that it has altered the bootloader or partions.
If I run this RUU again it installs fine.
So if anybody has intentions of rooting the device again, I advice that one should not run this RUU and update the device.
Can anybody help me out to bring it back to bootloader and instal the custom recovery.
Or should I say I am stuck up ?

Yes tried this. No help
You can consider my experience as moderate but not expert.
Tried all the known methods to root this but no help.
It is not giving write permission when in adb shell command. Permission denied is answer.
in terminal emulator not giving the su (super User) permission.
I think I am stuck up.
Can any body help ??????????
Will be grateful.
Have you tried to root it using the newbie guide to rooting found in the development forum? I can't link yet, but it shouldn't be hard to find.
I installed an OTA update on the Hero a couple of weeks back, might have been the same update as this one, and I couldn't use VR's batch script to root after that. But I was able to use Universal AndRoot with no problems.

Thanks for your reply.
Tried this guide for sure before also.
But without success. Actually the universal androot installs and gives su access successfully.
But using Terminal emulator and flashing image to flash.img it gives me error in read error ( out of memory ) which I fail to understand how to correct.
I have used this guide before also where it worked flawlessly. But in this ROM I suppose to root it again we need to take something extra.
Can anybody help???????????
You can try to download and install a task killer from the market and kill running applications. Should free up enough memory for the recovery image to be flashed.
Hi,
I'm brand new user of HD (first time i have android phone) and i wanted to put custom rom. As i understand i have to put Clockworkmod Recovery to install any rom.
I downloaded from marketplace but when i started it, it says "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands"
Is there any workaround (phone is unlocked)?
(I hope it's a right place to ask )
Have you rooted, S-OFF, ENG-OFF your phone?
ENG-OFF is only if you want to flash a different radio.
You can find all the guides in the Development Section.
Aha, i'll do that first (in that order)....
Before i do permroot i searched for stock rom, but i found a link (http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/) from where i can't download....is there any other link? I see that permroot is little bit risky...
EDIT: I root it, put s-off and put clockworkmod.....THANKS, TY, TY!!!!!!
Hi
Let me open this thread by saying that I have just bricked a DHD yesterday. So I guess I was a bit unprepared. It was nice on part of the repair centre to replace it under warranty. (I dont think they knew, because the bloody thing won't even boot, no matter what you did.)
So, to tell you what I did yesterday, I followed this tutorial to root the Desire HD: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_HD:_Rooting
I was already on 1.32.405.6, so I didn't need to downgrade.
I then gained Temp root access and then perma root access, as per tutorial
I DID NOT Flash the Engineering HBOOT (since it said its optional). Should I have dont this if I was installing a custom ROM?
Then, I followed this tutorial for Flashing Cyanongen. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Ace:_Recovery,_Radio_and_CyanogenMod
Again, I did not Flash the radio. Is this absolutely necessary to flash a custom ROM ?
I successfully installed CM7 and booted. Then I decided to format the microSD card. It returned with a notification as, "Blank SD card" Clicking on the notificaiton would ask me to Format the card.Nothing happens.
I posted in another forum and someone asked if I made partitions ? This got me searching again and I then proceeded to make partitions with Clockwork Recover Manager
Another thing I want answered is if I should have created partitions on the microSD card or not ? At what stage should I create the partitions ?
What is the difference between ROM Manager and Clockwork Mod
Should I install a new kernel during Flashing ROM ?
I did a search via Google, There are hundreds of thousands of posts regarding rooting, but a lot of them use Visionary+ and then flash a ROM. I read earlier that this is not desirable. I can use adb on PC, no problem.
Any comprehensive definitive tutorial for rooting DHD and installing custom ROM

Those should get you started.
Do not partition SD card, it is what caused your brick. Flashing ENG hboot is your own choice, you can choose to do it later with my one click tool (link in signature). It is not necessary to flash a custom ROM and/or radio. A ROM always comes with proper kernel, so you do not need to flash it separately. ROM Manager is just an interface for ClockworkMod, nothing more.

Ouuchhhhh .. came a day too late ....
I was one of the ones bricked
You cannot remove it. Just post something useful to general or discuss here. Koush is working on that recovery problem, but I would advice to stay away from the partitioning feature at all times.

more questions after reading Guide
WOW ,,,, thanks guys ...
Just finished reading the [GUIDE]How to flash a ROM onto your DESIRE HD [COMPLETE]. Wheew....
Now I have more questions . Thanks to anyone who answers.
Here we go
1.) I have a Vodafone branded DHD, with a boot animation splash screen and useless apps. Will I need a goldcard ?
2.) Is it OK to use Visionary+ to perma root for flashing ROM's ? I had read on some forums where they didn't approve of this method. Rather they said, use the adb command prompt. The Cyanongen guide even says that if you have Visionary+ installed, uninstall it before rooting .... /confused/
3.) To put it crudely, Radio S-ON is like a security check to see if the approved apps/software are being installed. Is that correct ?
Then what is ENG S-ON ?
4.) When you do a Permanent root (by Visionary+ or adb command prompt), doesn;t it automatically set Radio S-OFF. If it does, then why do we need to do radio S-OFF as in using the tool ?
5.) I see you are not using ROM Manager for wiping cache etc. Instead you are using Full-Wipe 1.3. Is it better than using Clockwork Recovery for doing a wipe of cache ?
6.) The Radio S-OFF and simunlock tool. Can it lock my handset, since its already officially unlocked ?
7.) Why would I flash the Radio... (last step before Flashing ROM). Is it only for getting a /possible/ battery performance or network strength ? If it is not actually required for the actual Flashing of ROM, I might leave it out. Network is pretty ****ty here anyway
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
1. Yes
2. Sure it is, the guide in Cyanogen is a bit.. Weird.
3. No. S-OFF in general is a setting that allows you to write to the internal memory (read+write rights). It also disables some version checks and so on. ENG S-OFF is a special case which enables fastboot commands. Those allow you to flash radios, splash screens and such easily via USB connection.
4. S-OFF is WAY more serious mod (like god mode) than permanent root. Visionary only gives you root, which basically gives you rights to do more stuff in Android.
5. Nah, I do not personally use that wipe.zip. It is useless in my opinion The feature in cwm does pretty much the same.
6. It does not lock your device.
7. It is not entirely necessary. But if you have crappy network, it is a very good reason to flash a radio, which will improve your signal quality. My advice, flash it.
Some more questions posted in the DHD rooting/flashing thread. If anyone feels to answer them ,,,,,, thanks

Hi all,
I tried to search on this and didn't uncover my exact scenario. My issue is that after I successfully unrevoke my HTC Desire, I can't install BusyBox. I also get errors when I try to run Alpharev and by running adb su on the phone it says I don't have permissions, so clearly it's done something (I have Clockwork recovery now and also the Superuser app) but the root seems to be incomplete. Let me list everything out...
On my Stock Softbank Froyo 2.2 (HBOOT 0.93-0001, S-ON):
- Ran Unrevoked 3. This reported success.
- Rebooted.
- Attempted to install BusyBox via the installer app from market. I went to install to xbin and it says 'The application failed, either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount'. Obviously I am not NAND unlocked at the moment.
- Ran Titanium backup. It says 'phone NOT rooted'.
- Ran Root Checker. It reports that the phone is rooted.
- So I tried Alpharev to S-OFF and it reports that the device is found, but then errors out with at: 'can't open `/tmp/cmdline' errors during model detection. According to Alpharev's instructions, this indicates that the phone isn't rooted.
- So, I tried unrevoked again and it says it can't root (system version too new? it says).
Ok, so I decide to debrand by creating a GoldCard and using the latest WWE RUU. This works perfectly without a hitch. So I rerun the above procedure *without doing anything else* and it fails in exactly the same way. Really there couldn't be fewer steps. From a freshly installed firmware, I have USB debugging on and it *won't really root*
Any suggestions? I think some people report success with Unrevoked 3.21 but I can't find a trustable source of this to try (don't want to try to use a version from a file sharing site for this reason).
Thanks!
Bah, nevermind SOLVED. I was trying to install BusyBox from the market, but I needed to run Titanium Backup, click 'Problems?', then install BusyBox from there. Now all works.
(original post was in wildfire general section-- moved here on suggestion)
I wanted to root and flash my VM Wildfire S,but had some problems along the way.
Before I started the process, I had a LOCKED.
*** LOCKED ***
MARVEL C PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT- 1.10.0001
And, I have Android 2.3.4
I successfully unlocked the bootloader using HTC Dev site/process. I validated that I had (and still have) "UNLOCKED" on HBOOT screen.
Being a noob, I was really happy with this result. In fact, I was so happy, I wanted to continue on to Root the phone. Upon hours of search in xda, I found "One Root for WFS 1.5", read the thread, and even watched the youtube vid- man, it looked easy!
Unfortunately, all did not go well. See attachment to get idea of what happened..
I was softbrick until yesterday. I could get the HBOOT Menu, but when I try fastboot, I saw things like:
PG76DIA.zip
no image or wrong file
PG76DIA.nbh
no image or wrong file
I spent many hours looking through this forum and others on how to fix. I tried a couple of things, but this one worked (flashed Alquez's Unoffical 5.0.2.6 ClockworkMod recovery):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1436501
I installed Rom Manager as suggested, but it wouldn't work ("an error occurred while trying to run privileged commands"). I am guessing that I am actually not rooted??
I am happy for now, but back to searching for next step, unless I can get a hint or two from this forum? please. I am guessing I need to root (any suggestions as to best one for vm wildfire s?) Can I still do this with the alquez's unofficial 5.0.2.6 cwm recovery?
I think you ROM is still not rooted. There any many root Applications present Try out. I personaly prefer htcsupertool utility, Since it helped to Root my WFS.
After Rooting process Is done.
You can check the status using Root Checker(a small app in Google market) to verify the root status.
After Rooting you can Flash ClockworkMod Recovery through Rom manager app.....
If you've got a custom recovery, try to find a root.zip somewhere on the forum, and install from recovery. That should root you.
