[Q] agps patch any good - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i saw this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442032 and was wondering if this patch would work on the xplay(works on x8)...would it make a difference on the xplay i mean make the gps lock to more sattellites, apperently its able to lock on 9 to 11 sats instead of the default 4 sats ...
Oh and before i forget how do we know how many sats our terminal is logged on?

I don't think it's needed on the Play, it has the best GPS I've ever used in a phone, locks within seconds even indoors

thats what i thought too ,mine had issues with 233 but 234 fixed it ,
but since i have a protective case now i wondered if it could better reception
Mine doesnt lock indoors unless i am near a window ...thanks for your reply

Yes, it probably would 'work' on the Play as it's only a modified gps.conf in /etc/. Whether it would actually give better signal or not, I'm not sure, as like others have said, the GPS fix on my Play is really good already.
I'd also be weary of using third-party servers for GPS etc anyway, as you're giving them a lot of information

Need peoples help to prove GPS HW or SW issue?

So to my surprise I do not see this topic for the Galaxy Nexus yet. I want to see if this is a batch issue or an actual SW bug most haven't noticed yet.
Basically, if I only have GPS turned on my nexus running 4.0.1 will not find a GPS signal. I've used the GPS tool on the market to confirm that only when I enable the Google assisting using mobile towers and wifi will I get a signal. But GPS is still searching. My wife also has the same phone bought at the same time with the same scenario.
After Googling this I see that Google forums and the android community forums have topics like this indicating similar issues. Some posts even have someone comparing with a colleague if their nexus under the same condition works and sure enough it does. Other posts indicate Samsung mentioning that there may be a problem.
Can people try to turn off the mobile tower and wifi assistance then see if GPS locks on quick (or at all) then post their comments? I'm going to exchange these phones and need as much proof of defect as possible.
I appreciate the time.

So first, I appreciate the responses.
Second, my story in more detail:
- I bought the phone and wanted to prevent battery drain so I unchecked the "Google's location Service" box.
- Once I started Maps, by Google, I noticed my location wasn't being found at all. In fact the Searching for GPS timed out and said that this is temporarily unavailable
- I checked my wife's phone that was purchased at the same location and found the same issue.
- Accuracy with the "Google's location Service" box was up to 50 meters. It did NOT improve...
- After looking online, I found these two forums:

This is where I found people comparing devices...
- Today I downloaded a GPS Status app and found that the search was yielding no satellites.
- No Joke, I updated my Maps program (google market notification) and now I have no issues. No matter what setup I have I am found within 9 seconds with just GPS and accuracy to 10 meters. while with aGPS I'm found with accuracy to 5 meters...

Try 4.0.3 and see if that fixes it for you? Battery life is way better than 4.0.1 anyway
When I ran 4.0.2 stock my GPS was connecting in under 30 seconds, currently on a 4.0.3 rom it connecting in about the same time
Gps is slower without agps. These arent dedicated gps units. Starting a new thread about it isnt going to solve the issue any better either.

Yes, I would not wait 5 to 10 minutes to get gps fix.
This has been discussed time and time again...
The phone must download orbital data or an almanac for the GPS satellites in order to establish a lock. With assisted GPS, the phone can download what it needs via the mobile network, however, with assisted GPS turned off it must download it from the GPS satellites which can take a very long time - anywhere between 15 minutes and a half hour.
There is nothing wrong the the GPS in the Galaxy Nexus - mine locks on me, in my house, within a 5 meter radius within 5 seconds.
actually hes right. i too dont get locks till about 4-5 mins on just gps, w/o agps. this shouldnt be the case. Gnex has GPS+GLONASS support with barometric assistance built in. It should be locking in very quickly w/o agps. My captivate, with the galaxy S broken gps, locked on in 3-4 mins w/o agps. It must be some kind of software issue.
As to the questions of why you need it, say you are in another country, you wouldnt be able to use your gps, and would be in deep **** if you got lost or watever. I was in the Bahamas and it would never lock in for me, even when outside.
I'm on 4.0.1 bought in sweden late november and in roughly 1min i get a fix with satelite only.. a few min after first test i enabled airplanemode and got a fix within seconds.

Here's a general rule: Don't turn off the A-GPS unless you want it to take a long time to get the initial fix. Pretty simple.

Reason for me to uncheck Agps is to use pree loaded maps when going abroad and still need to find my way around so it is a good thing to be able to turn off network location assistence.. using data when in another country can cost you PLENTY of money

there is absolutly no reason to uncheck agps.
unchecking it DOES NOT increase your battery life.
at least not drasticly. the agps is only used when you use apps that are location aware. such as maps, alfred, google+ and many others.
if you just leave agps on, it will not decrease your battery at all until it is being used.
as as it's been brought up, and as you saw, your lock time goes from a few seconds to 5-12 minutes.
i just took a trip up to orlando, and while traveling at 80Mph my galaxy nexus got a GPS lock with agps on EDGE, not 3G, in about 5 seconds.
sometimes people want to hike 50 miles into the woods where there is no cell service, and still use their GPS. sometimes people travel to china where they dont want to pay roaming, and hence use their GPS with no data enabled. hopefully most people understand this point now.

There is no option in ICS to "uncheck" A-GPS.

So why not purchase a pre-paid foreign SIM for the people who use roaming as their excuse? Or better yet... Why not purchase a dedicated GPS device? People these days.

Maximum number of birds lock for GPS??

Hello all, Just a quick question...
how many GPS satellites can our phone lock on to? ie maximum..
i usually get 9-11 locks within a few secs but i am always able to see about 25 birds....
Is there any way to get more birds to lock on????
not a major issue, but im just curious.
Thanks,
i think t mobile has to do a update to our phones-hers some info about it
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/12/qualcomm-dual-gpsglonass-positioning/
I have locked 18 a couple of times, but it was totally random, and I was in a really, really wide open area, I mean , nothing for miles ..
So I think it can do it, using the GLONASS system as well as the USGPS system but, I could not tell you why I got that many locks , and it was on two different ROMs, and I don't remember what kernels I was running at the time ...
Hmmm okay i was just wondering. Im actually very satisfy with my GPS being quite useful in a congested city like nyc lols
Hopefully we get the update for the russian sat soon. Or however to enable them.

Yes ?
No ?
I tried all kind of solutions, programs, change gps.conf and sirfgps.. but nothing works for me. I´m from Spain. I have read other guys from Europe have same problem, so i want to know that this problem is only for us, and if there is a solution, on new roms like the spyke555´s rom.
My GPS only find 1 satellite on my actual rom rootbox android 4.1.2 and I used all android 4.2.2 roms, with the same problem too.
Thanks

gps doesnt work here with stock rom either.
I've tried many gps patch, but still nothing.
on stock rom I never got a lock, neither on rootbox(I also tried to edit the gps. conf and those stuffs, but nothing helped) , but with cm10 and cm10.1 it locks in seconds if I'm on the street, however it shows that only 2 sattelites can be seen. But my position is accurate

I think 3 sats are needed to work gps, I think your device use wifi to get your location, try to disable, and it wont work IMHO.

you're wrong, it locks up quickly without wifi and I can use it (sygic) for navigation as well. However as you can see it shows only 2 sattelites
mine works only when wifi enable, mine sees 2 sats sometime, but still no position. When I enable wifi location ( without wifi enable) it shows instantly my current location.

cm10.1-m3, litekernel, i927RUXKJ5 baseband.
You need 4 sats to get position, even in 2dimension (plane) you need distance from 3 points, because 2 cycle will have 2 intersection.
please european guys, respond the cuestion, only that way can find a solution together..
bubor, you think the problem is caused by the kernel or the rom?? or maybe our devices are defective? :crying:

I'm using this spyke's guy cm rom with the kernel from kick buckowsky's pacman thread. But before I flashed that it worked with the original (lite) kernel. Again, it worked with the old dman's cm rom, but not with rootbox and never with any stock rom (ics nor gb). Modifying the surfgps and gps.conf has never really helped.
Sometimes (its really not typical) I simply dont get a lock now either, but after a reboot it works fine.(be sure to test it outdoors, under a roof it's really weak). I use sygic for navigation (it has downloadable offline maps) and I live in hungary, but when I was in Prague, it worked there well, too. Mobile data needs to be on, and those ticks that I posted before.
I hope you'll get the gps working I know how annoying a useless gps is.
well i´ve just tested the rom PACMAN by kick buttowski, and for me gps works on it, but reports only 2 sats. I know that it is a cm 10.1 issue, which i don´t know if spyke is working on in his rom or not??. While i´ll wait for the spyke´s new kernel cause litekernel I think is draining the battery so much for my daily use.
So I gather the rom is what causes the gps problem? my phone is healthy uuffff :victory:
mine works only with "wifi and mobile network location" checked, and it shows my location very fast, so I'm happy with that.
I have no clue what needs for "mobile network location", but it does its job well, since I see maximum 2 sats, while I have my position.

Seeing 2 satellites is part of a bug. The NEMA messages, raw satellite data, aren't coming out of the driver properly in the latest build. So your software will always show that there are 2 satellites. That's incorrect.
Wifi location works because the GPS coordinates of the MAC addresses of nearby base-stations are known. When people have this feature enabled, the phone will silently upload MAC addresses and lat/long. It also uses cell tower triangulation (this was how the first google maps worked before common phones had GPS in the old blackberry days.)
You'll notice if you ever move (from one house to another) it will take Goog a while to figure out that your home wifi base station has new GPS coordinates.
If you're out in the middle of nowhere, you won't be able to get any kind of lock like this.
But, I'm fairly certain while these roms are not reporting correct NEMA, they are actually getting a real GPS lock.
In other words, software that asks the API "What's my lat/long and accuracy?" will get a valid answer.
Software that asks the API for "exact, raw satellite data, I'll figure it out myself" gets garbage.
It works for me (Italy).
I still have the 2 sats bug but it seems i get a lock in 30 secs.
I even tried with no wifi and no data connection: same result. I got a lock in 30 seconds.
I havent tried a navigation tho.
Hi guys, I'm in the u.k, and as far as I'm aware, the only person in the country with one of these phones!
But,, gps works fine for me.
The phone can see 12 satalites, and have a lock on 9 of them, giving me an accuracy of 16 feet.
Only problem is I don't know what rom I'm on as the chap rooted it for me before I got it sendt over.
I have no bugs in the rom that I've ever noticed, its 4.0.4 but that's all I know, anyone know how I can find out?
I'm guessing its stock ics, and as no other roms seem to be stable or ever finised, there doesn't seem to be any point in flashing anything else, accept maybee the litekernal which is the only stable one I could find.. but since I don't know what rom I'm running, I can't tell if the kernal will work, unless anyone else knows?

GPS Issues

Sounds like I am not the only one having GPS issues with my HAM. I have tried pretty much everything to improve things but with little or no success. Just to be clear I am talking about GPS locking and accuracy not AGPS (mobile tower) or WIFI based location which seem to work fine.
Hopefully this thread will get noticed by HUAWEI and they will fix the problem which in my case is :
Inconsistent GPS locking, sometimes it locks on pretty quick < 1min other times the GPS icon in the notification bar just keep flashing.
Inaccurate GPS location when it does lock with the position jumping around.
Location and heading changes when stationary which are probably related. Looks like internal compass maybe buggy or is not getting used.
I very dependent on GoogleMap and its Navigator which is where the above issues have been identified. I tried Waze which seems to dampen the location and direction jumping a bit but the initial lock was still a problem.
Same issues in B906 and B907 roms, haven't tried B221 (trying it next but it looks like others experienced the same with this rom)
Tried:
GPS Status and Toolbox - no difference
GPS Fix - no difference
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1563226 - Used Method 2 and with SSL as suggested by member svvv - Improved AGPS and WIFI based location lock but didn't help with the GPS
Never had this problem with any of my previous 4 Androids and even my old Windows Phone worked flawlessly. Maybe its something to do with my HAM being a Chinese model and it also having GLONASS which has better coverage in the northern hemisphere. Will see if I can set it to just use just the US GPS system in the build.prop.
Its a shame that Huawei stuffed the GPS on the HAM, it would be my perfect phone otherwise, if I can't get it going reliably it will be the Galaxy Mega for me as much as I hate Touch Wiz......
Location Access enabled with both and wireless networks enabled.
Google account Location settings enabled.
2GB no NFC International Model, rooted.

If ur AGPS is working fine eventually ur GPS should work fine. AGPS will use network to locate the GPS satellites.
try changing AGPS settings in the Ascend Mate secret menu *#*#2846579159#*#* under backgroundsetting

AGPS wont be that accurate as GPS...but whenever mobile cant fix a position with GPS satellites it goes for AGPS until GPS becomes active. U will not see any difference in the navigation.
Also try using GPS in the open skies mostly u wont get a fix inside a house or closed areas.
Thanks Svvv, that's what I found. Still can't believe Huawei couldn't get this right, even my wife's $50 ZTE's gps works like a dream. Searching through the P6 forums shows similar problems, not surprising given the similar hardware. I'm starting too suspect it's a hardware problem, maybe antenna related so I'm not confident of a software fix. Spent far top much time on this and I need accurate navigation so it's so long HAM. It's a shame, great phone otherwise, going too miss the battery life.....

GPS update. Tried B221 for a week but GPS issues were the same, positional accuracy was seemed slightly worse.
Rom was more stable than b907 though, no random reboots or system freezes bit b907 has better functionality. Very jealous of my wife's nexus 5, can't tell you how good the hardware and software is. A absolute bargain!
Can't go back to a small screen though, fingers crossed we see a nexus 6 to bridge the gap

since i dont quiet use gps in phones (i'm using other gps only gadget) i'm sure there must be something missing in the HAM that prevent it having good GPS signal/system.
well, if you ever wanted to replace the HAM, still wanted the same Batt Power, big 6.1", why not go for the HAM 2 which is LTE version with many improvements over the first HAM, heard that they improve GPS too.
It is the same problem with Huwaei MT 7 - I can not believe the this company did not discover this issue in their product yet, this is what is bad about the Chinese products

[Q] Problematic GPS

My GPS has been problematic lately. Currently I have an AT&T version that I converted over to GPE (4.4.4 with GPE kernel 3.4.0-gb1b6fb1 [email protected]#1)
Lately I haven't been able to use my GPS apps. So, I started going through the motion of refreshing the A-GPS data.
When I downloaded GPS Toolbox from the Play Store, I noticed that it was seeing GPS satellites but it couldn't lock on ANY of them -- I ran it for roughly a few hours but inside and outside. The number of satellites it's seeing is always roughly 15+. My location settings have High Accuracy enabled. (Which I believe is the only thing I need to have checked, right?)
I think it has something to do with the modem but I don't know how to troubleshoot through a process in order to get a definitive answer.
Could someone offer some suggestions on what to do?
