Hello everyone,
I've been only using iphone for last 3 years or so and I finally decided to switch over to android after big disappoint from the iPhone 4s release. Now that I have the Galaxy Nexus sitting in front of me, I have some questions that I would like to ask.
1)What is the best Custom Rom that's out there for Galaxy Nexus?
2)Is there a way to overclock the galaxy nexus?
3)Any tips and advices for someone who switched from iOS?
Thank you.
My tip would be to unlock it now and then use stock ICS for a while.
Highly agree with this post...it is an absolutely great phone so before messing with custom ROMs play with stock for a few weeks.
Yes it can be overclocked but that will impact battery life.
Also if you're familiar with the flashing process you might want to convert to yakju to ensure prompt ota updates. I was on yakjuux for months and it wasn't pushed to me but the moment I flashed yakju it came.
Bear in mind some users including myself experienced significant lag and a few bugs on the 4.0.2 image...reverted back to 4.0.1 and will likely wait till 4.0.3

Hi there, firstly.. Welcome aboard!
I have been using Android full time, but there has always been an iphone around.
I would highly recommend Paul O'Brien over at MoDaCo as a supplier of some of the most stable and reliable Roms I have used, he currently has a 4.0.2 based rom with 4.0.3 parts and compatibility. Options in the 'kitchen' (if you sign up for the low cost Add Free membership) include overclock and undervolt kernels, the 'bake' procedure is smooth and reliable, the community as friendly and knowledgeable as here at the excellent XDA.
Enjoy the freedom and customisable nature of Android

To go with the above, unlock the bootloader before setting the phone up as unlocking WILL wipe all data. Once unlocked, you can use it as normal and be able to back it up before flashing something new
I'd go with a pure 4.0.3 rom like bigxie and pair it with franco kernel. 4.0.3 has significant performance improvements over 4.0.1/4.0.2.
I'm unlocked and rooted.. waiting for official CM9 release, only then will i flash a new kernel along with the ROM.. but stock ISC is still new enough and really nice welcome to the community!

For overclocking you first have to have a kernel that supports it which I think ARHD does but you also have to download an app, the best is set CPU which is free to xda users just google it and then in setcpu you just move the sliders to the desired clock speed, but be aware some phones can't handle higher clock speeds and will randomly shut off, if this happens the turn the speed down and also higher clock means more performance which means larger battery drain

Okay, I will look into that. Thank you.
Also, is antivirus/spyware app necessary for Android? I didn't need one for my iPhone but I am not sure about GNEX

honestly i think your rom will be the best and most awesome rom ever. Head over here to build it.
I have used ARHD and was very happy with it. I just switched to the Gummy ROM this afternoon and I like it as well.
The problem is no one has enough info from you. Different ROMs have different features. Because of this, "best" is largely opinionated. Read through the [ROM] threads in the development section. Try and get a feel for what features you want then ask around for which one people like the most.
My experience:
ARHD: Pretty much 4.0.2 stock. No visual changes, just performance enhancements. Nice and smooth ROM
Gummy: based on leaked 4.0.3 with major enhancements. Toggles in the drop down menu. Ability to over clock and under volt. I have not ran it very long, but so far really like it.
Hope this helps.

I was on ARHD 2.1.2 for a little while. It ran much better than stock. Then I tried bigxie's ROM and it felt much smoother than ARHD. I'm currently using it with Franco's kernel. While benchmarks don't really tell the whole story, bigxie's ROM with Franco's kernel is quite fast. I get over 3000 on Quandrant (vs 2200 stock, although I think it's an optimization issue) and over 6300 on Antutu (vs. 6000). I like it b/c it looks stock, but adds a few conveniences, like having the power widget in the dropdown notification menu for easy toggling.
From the research I have done AOKP seems to be a winner...I have no experience with it as Im waiting for the price on the gnex to come down before I pull the trigger. But its a very popular among the members I know who have switched to the gnex.
I've always know what AOSP is but what is AOKP. I hear that alot.

Score one for the fellow Fascinate owner! If he can find one of the best ROMs available on the Gnex without even having one, the answer should be even more obvious to Gnex owners. I use the Toro version of AOKP myself and can confirm droidstyle's conclusion
Terminators run on Android
AOKP is simply the best one
Try the Milestone 2, its great!
Kang milestone 2, Franco kernel oc 1.35
Best I have used.

It's tough to say what is the 'best ROM' as different users want different things from a ROM, but personally, I really rate Bigxie and AOKP.
They are the only two ROMs I'd recommend for GSM Nexus.
Regards.
I finally rooted my phone and don't know what to do from here. I want a rom with good performance and good battery life. Which do you guys think is best? And what's aosp and open kang?
Thanks

The best thing to do is test different ROMs your self as all you are going to get is 20 different responses telling you to use different rom and kernel combinations.
Saying that my recommendation is AOKP by romann and Trinity kernel from morfic.
AOSP - Android Open Source Project, this is what all android software starts of from. The GN runs android in its purest form so a lot of devs use AOSP in there thread titles.
AOKP - Android Open King Project, this is a play on AOSP. People refer to something being kanged something has been taken and used without permission. It's used in an ironic sense most of the time as XDA has a lot of copy and paste devs who take without asking.
In reality AOKP has many original features and tweaks in it that make it one of the most unique and customisable roms available.

This may sound a little harsh but if you don't know what you want root for it's likely that you don't need root at all. I would use stock ICS for a little while longer and revisit the custom ROMs later.
Lol I have rooted before my x10 and HTC desire and my touch 4g and Samsung vibrant but don't know what's a good rom for galaxy nexus and what aosp is or aokp till the last comment cleared everything and answered my question. So ya I know how to root and load custom rom

I was just wondering how many other people are already planning to upgrade over to Jellybean once it actually comes out (officially or unofficially). There are a lot of perks with staying stock like stability etc but will miss the functionality and tweakability of custom ROMs.

As soon as there is AOKP for JB - I'm upgrading.
I'll wait a few months to give ample time for all inclusive feedback from the community, and to give the CM team some time to fine tune. But yea, eventually.
As soon as it comes out I'll be swapping! Personally I found the Google images to be perfectly fine to be running as my daily driver and as much as I love my customisations, I won't mind the new features.
Upgrading right away. I don't see a reason why not. Plus it won't take as long for cm to port it over because the code won't be a restart from scratch (compared to gb vs ics)

I personally feel the same as you. I've been using CM9 since I bought my Nexus back in December '11 and I flash nearly every nightly that's released. So keeping with the trend and to stay cutting edge I will upgrade to stock JB until CM10 or whatever it's gonna be called comes out.

As soon as Rascream gets it ill give it a go... I have been in stock, aokp, cm9,eb,paranoid,fh and tried all the kernels franco/trinity /glados/stock with all the roms also got all the apps control for the main kernels trinity/franco/glados and I kept going back to cm9 they do a perfect job and it's a great rom combined with Franco or Linaro franco its a beast getting over 4500 in quadrant at 1600mhz 512mhz gpu and the phone was smooth as the real hell but hey the battery drain at such performance its crazy... so with cpu at 1400 and interactive governor battery was about 15 hours with 4 hours screen, and still buttery smooth... or at least that's what I thought.... until 2 days ago I decided to try a Linaro optimized rom and the name Rascream came up since I'm trying the franco Linaro seemed to be a good idea...
Gentlemans I don't think I'm going back to any other rom after trying this.. he encourage to use it along with trinity Kernel and i gave it the go... now the phone its so smooth that I can't believe it... damn... And the battery over 20 hours with 5 hours screen lol... Well I'd just can't imagine what it will be with jb Linaro optimized and hey I won't ever use non Linaro rom again...

This. To be honest CM9/MIUI are gonna hold me over till jelly bean starts making its way into the branches. I'm banking on 4.1 being incremental at most anyways so it shouldn't take too long. I really can't see Google revamping again unless they do it for tablet mode only
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
Well, if it offers improvements in areas that one my phone need to be improved, certainly I will make the early transition, however, I will probably wait until there is a custom ROM and Kernel or two available.
As soon as a stock/rooted version for yakju hits either Google's factory image page or XDA, I'll try it out as soon as I can.
As it seems to be JB will be a point update, basically a polished and tweaked ICS , so stability should not be in question, so i guess as soon as it's officialy released there's no reason not to go for it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'm sticking with 4.0.1 yakju for the next week and incrementally updating to 4.0.4. I've had to many problems with random rebooting... so testing different theories out first.
If Jellybean addresses the random reboot issue (still haven't found anything concrete on XDA or other about the potential causes) I'll likely give it a shot right away. Worse case scenario I revert back to my .1 backup (or whichever stable version my phone is running on at the time).
I'm thinking of waiting for a CM. CM9.1 anyone?

I ran CM !0 for a few days but I used a Mac and MTP doesn't work so its a bit of a deal breaker for me, but in all fairness its Extremely stable to be an Alpha build. My first android phone was the G1 and then on to the Nexus One so i'm a sucker for AOSP based android roms and for Cyanogen Mod in general so ill be running it when the MTP gets sorted out on my Mac.
I tried Wanams rom, I remember him from my SGS2, Hes a great Dev & its really stable as well.
The best all around so far for me is AndroidUser00110001's Rom linked below. I've found the wifi disconnect problem that i was having with the other TW Roms is gone and it has had the best over all balance of performance and stability.

I have looked at it, and the one I have installed on my phone even has the Aurora designation I intend to use if I publicly release a rom for this phone, so we will see.
Also, son of a *****, godaddy didn't auto-renew my domain. Guess I will need a new one.

Definitely AOKP. Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean versions are awesome. I've yet to find any bugs that keep it from being a daily driver. In fact I've found none. But I haven't used it that in depth much, we shall see.
But I put my vote in for AOKP. By far the best, and I only flash for AOSP based ROMs anyways. :good:

I'm using and loving Wanam, but due to the poll, I really want to check out the AOKP.
I had miserable lag and battery life on 4.2.1. I tried every solution presented here. I flashed in every way imaginable. I did factory resets, wipes, etc, and nothing worked.
Then I downgraded to 4.1.1 and I had no more lag and got my battery life back.
I haven't even noticed a difference between the functionality of 4.2.1 and 4.1.1. Seriously! Try it!
OK.
For me battery life improved with 4.2.1 (as good with stock kernel as with Franco on 4.1.2) and I have had no issues.
Looks like I'm one of the few that didn't had any problem with 4.2.1, battery seems good as usual, no Bluetooth problem either, no lag.
I'm using everything stock and when I need to re-flash the room I use the 4.0.3 ROM.

but same here xD i´m using 4.1.2.
got this combination:
-jellybro 4.1.2
-new camera+gallery ->4.2.1
-new clock ->4.2.1
-franco kernel 300
so i got the benefits of 4.2.1 and the performance of 4.1.2
new lockscreen of 4.2.1 is senseless in any way. performance is better on 4.1.2.
the only thing i like on 4.2.1 is the cam and the clock and i got them on 4.1.2
got great batterylife, usually 3,5h displaytime. uninstalled unnecessary things. made a few synchro-optimazations and i am very happy. disabled the transitionseffects as well, no need if apps are opened up nearly instantly

LOL, please don't suggest this to anyone. There is no methodical approach to what you've done - or atleast you didn't specify what it was.
And, since there isn't one, this is a completely blind approach at fixing an issue.

Flash 4.2.1 on your device, leave all stock apps on there and see what happens. Whatever is happening is probably caused by some 3rd-party application that isn't fully supported on 4.2.1.

All our nexus are different down to a molecular level. If Samsung quality control was letting loose devices that didn't all run the software as intended then I think we'd have much bigger issues. NO, this is NOT the same principle "as cpu"...
I do not have SOD issues at all. You can't justify you're statement one bit because you have done ZERO testing to prove otherwise. Just because you read about it in the development section doesn't mean it's true. :victory:

Until the guide turns up I will wait for the next bug fix release as Google have admitted there is a SOD problem across the board when using 4.2.1 :victory:

Where is the report that google admitted it?
I just suggested to you on the 1st page that you can try... Flash 4.2.1, don't install any 3rd-party applications for several days. If you're SoD-free, then try installing your apps one by one to narrow it down.
You also failed to provide any logcats.
My uptime is nearly 1 week now.. SoD-free! I must have a magical device or the molecular bonding at the factory was "just right" that day when they produced the PCB lol.
erm...i dont have SOD btw...100% stock..

The only SoD i had was when used google maps for navigation. Had to pull the battery. And actually that is the only one i have heard off.
Except of that i have been SoD free with atleast 5 different kernels on stock 4.2.1 with about 100 apps.
The only reason for the kernels change was to find the best for battery.
Still no luck
