I've lol'd at it before and I'll lol at it again!
LOL!
Dont waste time on trying all the ROMs as everybody suggests here. Lifes too short!
Its just too time consuming. Even with Titanium Pro and similar stuff.
My personal recommendation:
Install different launcher than stock (Apex if you like stock, Nova with a bit of 3D). Try to use.
Root! Use it a week or two. See if just rooting satisfies you.
Install franco kernel. Actually you can do this in the first place.
Install AOKP ROM. That one is like a default at least for me. Reflash the franco kernel. Because ROM will overwrite it.
That combination will give you a feeling of custom Rom + kernel. AOKP comes with Nova launcher. Make it default and it will give you a totally new experience. But keep in mind that you dont need root, custom rom to test different launchers.
if he's asking these kinds of questions, i say stock rom+stock kernel.

Try slim ics and franco kernel r160. Best combo i have found yet!
Please search.

I wonder why still nobody made a simple table with rom comparison. A simple matrix with roms listed and features.
Features like: android version, kernel, customizations, launcher, what has been added, what removed.
Make it wiki and people will add their opinions in no time. Even with screenshots.

There is nothing as best. I tried many ROMs and kernels. Everytime I came back to
a. Slim + Franco MS 3 + Apex launcher
b. Slim + Trinity (if you find blue tint interesting) + Apex
Slim is maintained by 1 person and he responds to most queries himself. Great combo for my needs, hope you find yours soon.

Hi,
I have AOKP M5 installed. Just watched the Slim ICS video review on Youtube and I must say that I didn't find any differences between AOKP and Slim ICS.
The differences are really minor if there are any at all.

Yes you are right with only minor differences. However, for some reason, when I reduce dpi in aokp or anyother ROM to 280 or anyother value, market starts behaving wierd. Slim is the only ROM that lets me change dpi without colliding with any other app.
What ROM/kernel combinations do you prefer and why? Vote and reply insight on your ROM.

I am currently running wanam's 1.1 version of his stock-based ROM. Been running it for 2 days and has felt much smoother and battery friendly than stock! I ran CM !0 for a few days but I used a Mac and MTP doesn't work so its a bit of a deal breaker for me, but in all fairness its Extremely stable to be an Alpha build. My first android phone was the G1 and then on to the Nexus One so i'm a sucker for AOSP based android roms and for Cyanogen Mod in general so ill be running it when the MTP gets sorted out on my Mac.
I tried Wanams rom, I remember him from my SGS2, Hes a great Dev & its really stable as well.
The best all around so far for me is AndroidUser00110001's Rom linked below. I've found the wifi disconnect problem that i was having with the other TW Roms is gone and it has had the best over all balance of performance and stability.

I have looked at it, and the one I have installed on my phone even has the Aurora designation I intend to use if I publicly release a rom for this phone, so we will see.
Also, son of a *****, godaddy didn't auto-renew my domain. Guess I will need a new one.
A buddy of mine just got the S3 and isn't into the touchwiz and nature theme. He just got the phone yesterday so I've been looking for the best custom rom with everything working. Any suggestions? Definitely AOKP. Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean versions are awesome. I've yet to find any bugs that keep it from being a daily driver. In fact I've found none. But I haven't used it that in depth much, we shall see.
But I put my vote in for AOKP. By far the best, and I only flash for AOSP based ROMs anyways. :good:
AOKP JellyBean and ktoonsez JB kernel. Those guys rock. Never seen a preview work so well, looking to see what's to come.

I'm using and loving Wanam, but due to the poll, I really want to check out the AOKP.
I've had my sprint gnex for about a week now. maybe two weeks, I forget. Anyway, 4.0.4 ICS is mind-blowing compared to 2.3.5 that I had on my rooted S-on Evo 4g (I did de-bloat the stock rom). The fact that it's not a Sense or TouchWiz rom is the best part of all, and really I find that I have no desired functionality that would require rooting or flashing of any kind. However... a lot of the additions in JB look really awesome and I'd like to check into those at some point in the near future. I'm comfortable with the idea of rooting and flashing. After I rooted my Evo I may have actually laughed out loud for being as paranoid and anxious as I was.
Here's my concern: after trudging through the sprint gnex dev forum, there's a lot of roms and kernels available. At this point I'm not so concerned with a kernel, but I'd like some help narrowing down the options to one or maybe two roms to get started with. Basically I'm looking for one that's as close to what Google would give me if they were releasing to sprint devices. I would also be cool with one that's as close to what sprint might release in an official OTA.
I was never crazy about trying CM roms (or other AOSP based ones for that matter) on the Evo just because I wasn't crazy about having to flash back and forth between stock roms for PRLs and profiles. I'm not sure how often that would really have to be done, but I won't consider that a deal breaker if it gets me into an ideal rom.

Like the above, CM10 is as stock as you'll find. There are other very close to stock with internal performance tuning.

I prefer AOKP to CM, but the last few AOKP builds have been horrible on battery and in terms of someone wanting a custom experience and not really knowing what they want, I point them to CM.
paranoidandroid is just cm10 with more options lol
I'm trying to be a good forum member and search out my own answers before posting them, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding much info about CM10 from their own website. First of all, they don't have a subforum for the samsung gnex at all (just the google variant), and most of what I have skimmed across on the forums seems to be related to either CM 7 or 9. Should I be looking in the Google Galaxy Nexus CDMA forum over there? Do we have much here on xda for CM10 aside from a dev thread?
Still need to look at paranoidandroid, I'm not opposed to a few extra options on top of what CM10 has already
Edit:
Paranoid looks like awesome, like the ability to use the tablet UI, but I think I'll wait for that one to mature a little more since I'm just getting started with roms!
I'm also gonna have to say mmuzzy's stock AOSP ROM. It's what we would have had from Google if we had AOSP support, IMO.

What I (personally) look for in a ROM is: stability, good battery time, performance/benchmarks, features, look & feel and more. Thank you very much and have a happy new year!
tldr; What is the best (US) Galaxy S 3 ROM based on stability, battery time, performance, features and look/feel.
That's a tough question as everyone has personal opinions of different Roms and each device will also handle each ROM different in my opinion this will only turn into a this ROM is better than that ROM thread and that is not good

It depends on what you are looking for from a ROM.
If you want stable stay with stock TW
If you want latest and greatest chose AOSP/AOPK Rom.
Both are now on 4.2 which is much smoother and faster than TW.
No bloatware of course. Better battery life with custom kernels etc...
CM 10.1 is great
Tasks AOPK is better IMHO at the moment. CM is updated nightly which is a plus it minus... Task updates his ROM less frequently but it's a lot more stable at the moment...
Which ever ROM you choose if not stock READ entire OP make sure you follow it to the T and then read all posts as they tell you all about bugs and workarounds

I always follow the instructions to a T, I want the best experience possible out of anything I flash ever. You mentioned better battery life with the Kernels, any experience with ktoonsez's or Task's kernel? Could you give me some estimate figures (example: 5 hours battery on stock, 8 on ktoonsez)
Running Illusion (CM based Rom) with the latest KT747 and no issues here, so I disagree with the guy above. I prefer stock android which is why I like roms like Task's AOKP and CM10.1 the most. It all comes down to preference.
Running Tasks AOKP 4.1.2. With lean kernel. Never crashes never any problems. Most stable custom ROM I've ever used. 4 hours screen on time, best battery I've ever gotten.
Just waiting for some updates on 4.2 then I will upgrade.

Thanks, orig dev I think was the only one I didn't click on.. Time is limited taking care of a 6month old..
This just ends up being a popularity thread.
I'm a huge AOKP/CM10 fan, but right now those ROM's don't have the one thing I need (USB-DAC) so I'm stuck with TouchWiz based ROM's.
I flashed Ultimatum ROM last week and have yet to have a single issue with it.
It's mostly stock with minor tweaks, so it SHOULD be a reliable ROM.
I then flashed a 23toggle mod with blue icons, so I at least have a good looking ROM also.
I find myself always restoring a debloated version of DG's m7 stock based rom with tasks kernel. I use rom toolbox as well to help tweak certain battery consuming apps. I usually lose 3-5% overnight on standby(7 hrs if I'm lucky and my kids let me). I think juice deffender helps me as well. Performance is pretty good but I'm a battery dork. The thread is probably back a couple pages now if you want to look at it. All of these dev's make great roms though. Try them all. Its called flashaholic and i'm a member.

I had the same question, but about the newer 4.2.1 roms. I want to upgrade, but i'm not sure which one will work best for me. Seems like Task and KTz joint is the most popular right now, but CM10 has been my daily. AS far as TW, I keep going back to Bacon Step with KTZ kernal becasue i use bluetooth alot and its my last TW backup. I want 4.2, but i need bluetooth to listen to my podcasts. What 4.2 rom has working bluetooth audio?
I used the CM9 Rom on my Epic and generally enjoyed it. With the SG3, what seems to be the Rom of choice for most to offer and stability?

Fo sho its the Rom to have and use is the Chemistry Rom because I have a GS3 fleshed to boost and all my main functions I need all work with this ROM. My mms and my voice mail. If you use cm10 or any aosp or aokp rom you lose all the goodies in touchwiz like motion effects.

Personally I like MOAR ROM, great list of features and you can theme it however you want during install

what does CM10 offer that the stock rom does not?

It gives you a clean, stock android look, theme able, no bloatware, uses less ram. I have heard better battery life but I don't know. It has CM10 tweaks. If you can wait till cm10.1 is stable, it should be pretty awesome.

does anyone know if there is a zip file of the stock 4.1.1. rom out there so that if I do download cm10 rom, i could switch back and forth between CM10.1 and stock rom
Make a backup in recovery. Thats what its there for
I like to break stuff!
Agreed. Backups are good

I used the CM9 Rom on my Epic and generally enjoyed it. With the SG3, what seems to be the Rom of choice for most to offer and stability?

Most of the roms in the Dev section are rock solid (minus a few bugs which are normal in almost everything) the only way to figure out which you are going to like is to read the OP of a few that sound interesting, flash and take it for a drive (give a day or two typically) unless you can't stand it. MOAR, TPR, and FAT ASS (Cartman Edition of TPR) are all great TW based roms, offer all the fun of normal TW.. Incredible themeing options via Morphology.
Free GS3 is another great rom (from what i hear) as well. I haven't personally ran this one either, but does work with Morphology for themeing options.
Just scan the dev section. You'll find a good fit.

Is it just me, I don't recall ever seeing those in the dev section. Unless those are just nicknames

Just nicks for the roms, minus the last one.. here's the direct links.
TN's rom is the best thing around right now in my opinion. Its got all the latest and greatest mods (multi, ink, 8 lock-screens, skip tracks) while keeping the stability of TW.

Well buddy that's a matter of personal preference. Find out what you like your phone to do and find a rom that suit your needs. Unfortunately you won't get a definitive answer on this subject. Trial and error until you find what you like.
