upgrade confusion - Desire General

i'm due an upgrade at the end of jan and am in the same predicament as many.
My options at the moment seem to be :-
1) Keep the desire until something `wow` comes along and get a giffgaff sim -(although a top spec model will probably come at a daft cost p.m.)
2) Samsung S2
3) Sensation XE
4) Sensation (apparently XE battery fits and of course it can be rooted and overclocked to 1.5ghz).
The giffgaff idea sounds appealing but if i drop my monthly spend my missus wont understand why I then need to spend more when a new phone comes along !
Plus although I am rooted certain things about the desire are starting to wear me down a bit - and its the chance for a new toy - id never had a phone for longer than 10 months before; 22 months has been a long time.
I thought I was headed for the SG2 but am now leaning towards the XE. I`m sure its just psychological but the fact the Samsung has been out a while preys on my mind when you add another 24 months before another upgrade.
I was excited by the RAZR and Nexus but have found them both lacking - I dont know what to do !

WHY hasnt the nexus got an SD slot? WHY????

I like the look of this Lumix phone.

I think that's better... No mount / unmount of an external memory, maybe less battery consumption
Why you need that btw? Lots users, included me, will not notice the difference.. Because I never (or maybe 3-4 times in 2 years) remove my sd.. So for me it's better if integrated like in the Nexus
A defects for the galaxy nexus maybe it's the gpu, it's one year old gpu.. It's the gpu of the nexus s

I have the HTC Desire and have ben using it since the past 3 months .. But seeing and experiencing the samsung galaxy S and its super amoled screen with gorilla glass and the bigger 4.3 inch screen tend for me to exchange it .

It remains a personal choice but if you are doubting between the two why not choose the nexus s, it does seem to have a flash (one of the big minuses of the galaxy s for me)
After being familair with both devices, I'd opt for the Galqaxy S. It's build quality is inferior compared to the Desire (although you do get over that quite quickly), but with ample internal memory, it heavily overshadows the desire.
I originally got Galaxy S phone. and now have a desire.
let me tell you this. if you use your GPS avoid galaxy S. the GPS doesn't work. it might be able to lock on your location when you are standing still after a few minutes. but start driving around and all of the sudden you are jumping from street to street.
also. Galaxy S doesn't have anything near the size of the dev community that desire has. it all might change since its very close to nexus s. but at the time there were no AOSP roms for it available so you were stuck with roms based on samsung's original rom.
I pretty much like every aspect of the desire better than the galaxy phone except the screen. even then desire has a pretty nice screen on its own.
what about the front face cam for video calls??
i find the galaxy s an awful looking and feeling phone may have more space & bigger screen, but i wouldn't swap my desire for it.
They are essentially the same phone so it comes down to the quality of the hardware and the desire wins by a clear mile. Desire for me.
Additionally The Samsung customizations are absolutely terrible ... They just destroyed android... I have tried one and for instance the Samsung application that replaced "people" is much much worst than the desire one...
If you plan to go on a lot of 3D games like the gameloft ones the galaxy s much better. Also the super AMOLED screen is probably one of the best out there.

yes humming bird is better for graphics than snapdragon as snap dragon is over a year old now while humming bird is 6months old

Imho the devs working on galaxy s roms are not as good as the ones we have involved here. Also the gorilla glass is a lie: it gets scratched anyway, check youtube yourself if you want. Sure galaxy s works better for games, but it needs a lag fix or it will become really sluggish...on top of that samsung is really bad in terms of user assistance and rom updates. I trust htc way way more and i don't care too much about games, hence why i picked the desire. My 2 cents...

+1.
Samsung has better battery though, but Desire is clearly a better device. And between 8GB of internal storage and SD slot I would opt for SD.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Samsung TouchWiz looks fairly ropey to me - HTC Sense is nicer.
Samsung GPU is better than the Desire's - Samsung if you want to play heavy games.
Samsung's casing is lighter but plastic compared to Desire's nicer, but slightly heavier finish.
Two users that I know with a Galaxy S said they _needed_ the lagfixes on it - while four users of desire haven't needed anything of the sort.
I think the battery life is neither or nor there - my phone lasts about two days between charges - so does the galaxy S from what I've heard - think it depends how you use it.
I'm sticking with my Desire
feel like putting in my 2 cents as well.
Love the look and feel of the desire, galaxy just felt budget.
I wont ever buy a phone that doesnt have an sd slot (sorry apple)
Choosing between screens is a bit nit picky isnt it...can you really tell that the desire has less pixels or a less sharper image? come on get your microscopes out.
After i got my desire i tested it next to a galaxy in the store and pic quality was better on desire, also speed was better.
I think i have a thing for sense it works for me.
For someone who was previously a samsung fan for my last 7 phones (after nokia went to that rubbish symbian thing) i have to say desire hands down
Desire or desire hd, the hd has similar graphics to the Sgs and a better CPU

I want to add something here.
Galaxy S is not something you want to compare with the normal Desire.
Galaxy S belongs to a younger generation which is obvious better, Desire is also much cheaper than Galaxy S.
If you want to compare than compare Desire HD and Galaxy S.
I prefer to have a Desire HD instead of Galaxy S.
Reasons: Sense HD is way more beautiful than TouchWiz. trust me on this one. I have flashed the ported Touchwiz on DeFrost...pheeeewwwww...I wanna puke seing the Touchwiz UI...but this is only my personal taste tho'

Of course you're right, but this isn't the topic...
To add something, do you think the hardware of the Desire will last 1 year and half or more ? I wish it would not become obsolete...

It is very difficult to say...if you pay attention to the smartphone development this year, you can see that the technology advances mega rapidly.
There is already news about the existence of dual-cored smartphones somewhere next year.
I think, even Galaxy S and Desire HD will be strongly out-of-date if the news are true, not to mention the normal Desire which is already older.
The question of the term obsolete is therefore going back to you, how often do you want to get a new cellphone, how much are you willing to pay for it and what are you going to do with the phone.,
For me, I am planning only to use my normal Desire (bought 2 months ago) until the dual-cored smarties are available on the market. I will consider that my Desire is obsolete at that time.
I appreciate all you're opinions ..
I have researched alot into the galaxy S and desire is for sure better built quality .. But the samoled and hummingbird with the gpu inside tells me to gt galaxy S .. But than the ppl say lag and gps stuff .
I m all for rooting and modifying my phone to the fullest with developer refined roms .. Would the darkys rom and newer voodoo kernels fix all this problem of stock gps and lag problem ?
I m also more leaned towards galaxy due to the fact that Googles newest Nexus S is v similar in hardware to the galaxy S .. So there will b a big spike in development in upcoming months is what I think ?
I may be wrong ..

HTC Desire - what's next?

The HTC Desire has been a pretty great phone for me, love the physical buttons, and the rooting scene is very very much alive.
Just wondering, will there be a phone that have the same size as the desire, but with updated internals like a dual core processor and more ram? Seems to be trend for bigger screens and any dual core phone is usually 4" and up.
What do you think?

The new samsung is so light you don't even notice the screen size difference in your pocket. Personally I would like to stick with HTC but if you were looking to buy a new phone right now nothing comes close to the samsung in terms of sexiness/thinness and lightness!

Thats the thing really, I’m not looking for a phone right now, I can wait for another year or so. But I have always had my eye out for new phones. My 1st smartphone was the 1st gen metal iPhone, I used that since 2007 till my job required me to have a phone without a camera. I got the Desire mainly because I wanted an iPhone-like OS and that I could easily remove the camera module without damaging the rest of the phone. But I’ve fallen in love with the android OS and the amazing variety of phones there are in the market.
HTC as a company is great. I think they’re moving in the right direction. Just that their new phones have locked bootloaders and well, the rooting community is what I really love about the android platform.

Yes, and I agree - I want one with the same physical size as the desire personally...
I want a phone that's quad core, 32GB internal mem, 1GB RAM...
BUT
I want it smaller and thinner than the Desire, and have a battery that lasts a week with heavy use
Seriously, guys - it's not gonna happen. You want more features, the phone will get bigger and have crap battery life. Just enjoy what we have as this is a golden age for mobile phones
Sensation will be my next step.
The unibody is awesome and the specs are too.
I stick to HTC cause I just love their hardware and quality.
[Mobilerit]
I think it's worth waiting till Q4 to change for me, love my Desire and am very keen to have physical buttons(not keyboard) on my next handset but unfortunately it looks like the top handsets will no longer have them.
I'm with the OP on this one. I love my desire, still do, but am keeping my eye out for the next desire-like phone. I suppose the htc desire s is the next logical step, but from what I've been reading, it's not that drastic of a jump and therefore not worth the upgrade. I would have to say htc dropped the ball on this one. The desire s will not reach the same popularity s it's predecessor simply because it doesn't bring enough improvements to the table. While the sensation seems to be the next flagship, the large size, insufficient ram and internal storage are deal breakers for me.

Sensation seems to be the logical next step, though gaining root access and S-OFF is a bit of a problem at the moment. Last summer when I bought my Desire, I knew I would not have to change my phone until dual cores kicked in. Well, they came a bit early I'll probably keep my Desire for a year or two more before I move on to dual cores.
I do keep hearing that dual-core processors and Sense 3.0 are not optimized, but that won't be much of a problem once the device is fully rooted and ROMs start cooking. Think of how innocent the stock Desire feels, if you ever for some reason turn back to it. We have a monster now. So, it's all up to devs to figure out a way to root Sensation. After, it's golden.
rant... Disregard...
I was thinking on buying the HTC Sensation but its too big for me...
HTC Desire S didnt evolve much... and I love HTC Desire buttons...
Ill be waiting till IceCream Sandwich!
I know its v picky, but why has HTC switched to shiny buttons for power and volume? They look so tacky. One thing I love about the Desire - it looks muted/classy, not shiny shiny.
On the S Nexus S, I was surprised how little I noticed the increased screen size, v different to the Desire HD which feels massive (there's only a .3 difference, isn't there?)

Still no decent replacement for the Desire

I have had my desire for 18 months now and its been amazing, but looking at the current crop of phones there just doesnt seem to be a decent replacement. I dont like the new 4.3" phones as they are far to big to carry around. Ideally I would like a 3.7-4" dual core phone but there only appears to be the LG 2x and I dont want that phone due to the poor support from LG. I have looked at the SGS2 which has great spec but again the screen is just to big! Are there any phones on the horizon that suit my needs? I may even look at an Iphone 4S!
There is one, but it's US only according to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19282336
Yep agree with op my contract is almost done yet no phone is drawing me towards it.

I agree with everything so far! The quad core phones look nice but my android desire running aosp seems to do everything I need it to do that is it worth upgrading or just wait another year and see how things turn out?!
Yeah, I recently grabbed a DX2 just to mess around with...I don't know how, but my CM7 Desire is faster/smoother than the dual core, just 6-month old X2 in almost every task.
HTC hit the Desire out of the park and haven't outdone themselves yet.
I like the look of this if we ever see it that is.
http://gizmodo.com/5845043/the-pana...p-might-not-suck-at-being-a-camera-or-a-phone
Let's hope that Ville comes to Europe. That looks Delicious. (And has proper camera too. Only thing bugging me with the Desire.)
agree, fast, reliable and perfect size. Thinking about Sensation XE, but bother me size.
Same with me. Even if I would want to buy a new phone there is none, and that's a shame concerning the enormous amount of phones thrown on the market.
I even would maybe buy a 4.3'' one but only with bigger resolution than Desire (so, SGSII is out). And also with big enough internal memory (so all HTCs are out, and in principle after the mess with our Desire, I don't want to buy a HTC anymore).
The only possible one would be a Google phone, but both, the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus don't have micro sd card slots, so they are out.
No phone left. Well done, manufacturers...
Agree. Another possibility currently on the market could be Motorola Atrix. 4" and if I remember right, it's dual core.
Edit: checked that out, it's Tegra 2
I have my tablet now.. arnova 10g2.. market place etc working ... so i use that for email etc and my phone for text etc.. playing a game on my 10" tablet then going to my phone is odd... do i want a larger screen , dont think so .
Do i want to use my 32GB SD card , yes.. would I like to use USB hosting ( like my tablet ) yes... my desire is wonderful .. but i think one day i may trade her in .. may ...

Upgrade time. Keeping your desire or moving on?

Hey guys and gals.
My contracts up next month (finally) and I'm torn between a shiny new phone or a dirt cheap contract, what are you planning to do?
My thoughts are swinging towards cheap contract as I'm always near wifi most of the day, mainly use my phone for offline video and music and I barely call anyone and use Facebook messenger instead.
sent from my desire running seb's aio rom
definitely cheap contract! have yet to find a phone as good as a customised desire...
I'm going to negotiate a deal for a cheap contact and buy out right one of either the Samsung galaxy S3, HTC one X or iPhone 5
I'm moving on. I'll probably HTC One X/S or maybe Xperia. I'm pretty much undecided right now about what to get but I'll get something very soon.
I really don't know. The hardware of the desire is pretty good, but it depends on if they can make ICS running well on the desire. I've used the beta ICS rom for 3 days and it was really fast, but full of bugs. If they could fix these I will continue my desire for a longer time otherwise I'll get another phone. (First world problem... argh )
My contract is up this month so I'll see what I'm offered. But with the HTC one and S3 out shortly I might hang on see what deals come up.
Maybe the s2 will drop in price.
The desire is still a decent phone

There are a few things I do not like about my desire :
The screen , a bit small now ( I have a 10" tablet .. ) but the phone does fit in my pockets.
The lack of RAM .. this is a BIGGY !!...
My back button has peeled off...
All this is annoying , but I need a new phone .. may get one in june... ( go sim only for a while ) one X or Xperia S.. ( so far XS is winning )
I'd like the ION as I have a 32 GB card!!!!!
keeping desire for now.
one x and one s are disappointing for me at the moment - sad there's no removable battery or microSD.
i also have a nice 32gb microsd to use in a phone and 32GB -> 26GB usable is a tad annoying when you have a microSD free
will maybe see how the next Samsung range looks like - besides I have no contract (or a cheap no-phone contract actually) so I have to buy my phone outright - so I've been pondering on getting a cheap sensation or evo3d recently...
a shiny new phone for sure
I'm getting either
HTC ONE X "Your quad-core-powered entertainer"
OR just settle for
HTC Velocity 4G (price will go down as soon as the ONE is released)
Contract wise, depends if you can afford to buy new model outright or not, simple. f you don't have 4-500 lying around then you have no choice because as for the hardware...Definite upgrade the Desire, although a monster in terms of the customisation it has had and still has, it'ss still no match for today's h/w and there's no doubt these new devices will be customised to the hilt too...all about the HTC One X (although yes, no microsd is big bug bear but at least it's 32GB) and the SGS3. Although if you can't wait for either of them there's no reason to leave out the SGS2 (buy it outright then sell later on). The Desire will never perform as good as the above no matter what hacks you do and the fact you have to hack to get to the same base level as the above should give you the answer in itself.
I am considering HTC one s or x. In that order.. but, I have no real need to upgrade. ;-)
I'm going to stick with the desire,,I'm running mild wild cm which I'd really nice and going to go with a Sim card only deal

My contract (2 years with Orange, £17 p/m, free phone) is also coming to an end in a couple of months, so the issue of 'what next?' is quite important right now for me.
As much as I love the freshness of Sandvold's ICS rom, it does make clear the hardware limitations of my Desire, particularly the small RAM and constant annoyance regarding the tiny internal memory, so I reckon I'll probably move on to a shiny new phone. Hopefully, the Galaxy Nexus if I can find it cheap enough (cheapest I've seen it is £330 out of contract, sim free).
another 10 months to go on contract for me.
I have loved the desire but i am sorely tempted to get the new One X sim free when it hits the uk next month.
I just moved on to the Incredible S pretty decent phone and yes HTC are working on ics on the Incredible S they say it should be released in April or may

I don't think I'll get another HTC, the lack of being able to see the screen in direct sunlight is a deal breaker, especailly next to my bros galaxy s. With regards to hardware limitations, is the ram really that bad? My desire plays video and music and can access t'interweb. The only thing that grinds my gears is the camera is rubbish since going to custom Roms. I've found a contract that works out to £2 a month after cash back with enough data and minutes to still enjoy the pleasures of a contract, plus sky sports mobile which I will eventually find a hack to get working on my TV.
I worked out I'll save about £600 over 2 years, then double once the wife has paid off her hardware aswell. Works out pretty damn good.
sent from my desire running seb's aio rom
If you don't use many minutes and usually near WiFi, you can go the pay as you go route. $10 for 2500 msgs, $0.25/minute for calling and pay for data if you get stuck in the woods. (all these numbers vary from carrier to carrier) This plan with an outright desire has been pretty good
Thinking of getting one s or one x when they come out. They said that they'd be focusing on phone quality rather quantity, and I personally love sense.
That's another thing, I just love sense, I've tried loads of custom Roms and launchers and i always come back to the latest sense because it works and its very easy on the eyes and has everything I want.

Just ordered myself the HTC Evo 3D...

Thinking of jumping ship?

So, had the One X since release date, always had HTC before this. But after having all the issues that have been described here on xda, I spoke to my network (3 uk) and they have said that so long as its within 28 days of the 4/4/12 that they will either replace it for a new one or any other model that they stock.
Now, I'm a flashaholic. I do not want to use the HTC unlock method, always relied on the very clever peeps here for "alternative" ways of s-off. But as it seems the biggest team of Revolutionary aren't working on the One X. I'm considering leaving the HTC brand and moving to the Galaxy Note?
Have any of you guys left the note to come here? It looks the part on paper at least?
Anyone else from 3 UK willing to take the plunge if the offer was sat there?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I think you shouldn't switch to the Note...
Sooner or later there will be a S-OFF tool.
The NOte is IMO too big, but that's your decision. The other reasons why I dodn't get the note:
- DPI is not as high
- the PenTile thing, this means the display has 33% red and blue subpixels. some people don't notice, but I do: there's not a single straight line. it appears as if every other row of pixels was shifted by 0.5 pixels; I just can't stand it.
I highly recommend you to check if that's a problem for you before getting it. Just saying
P.S: Even though the One X isn't perfect, it's the phone the closest to perfect I ever had.
Iff i waz you id go for Gnexus over note the note is ridiculously big my sister has it as a work phone
Mod or Die
see the thing is i am on Three UK as well. and i had the choice for my two replacements i had so far to go for a different handset. and both times i got close going for the gnexus. now all this hype about quadcore for me i am sorry i really did not notice it so far with the HTC one x...yeah apps load faster than ever but 50% of the apps stuck in loading phase...anyways still a great phone i say and i am more than likely to stick with it because i am really liking stock Sense now
but i do miss overclocking and undervolting and also using an AOKP rom...tough decisions to make one thing i do hate about this phone is though why HTC locked the bootloader..why not just unlock it..
Note no way man stay clear of that huge thing..no no no
Hmmmm? Thanks for the replies folks. As for the size issue (that's what she said!) Im not thay concerned, saying that I've never held one! But I currently have a Advent Vega, that if the Note could replace might be a good thing? Kinda streamline my tech, save me carrying 2 devices?
But aswell as a flashaholic, I'm a sucker for POWER! 1.5ghz quad core vs 1.4ghz dual core? I feel in a real dilemma, I love HTC, always have, but the ONE X has, so far, let me down.
@Dobbi, I will look into the red/blue pixel issue, I have now been spoilt by the quality of the one x screen! It is nice.

all honesty mate...it is like cameras..more megapixels does not mean you are going to get better picture. same with the quadcores..so far i would say and yes i know i might get flamed for this my s2 dual core felt bit more snappier at times compare to the one x. so if you are really a flashaholic then maybe the phone to go for is the gnexus...the development for that phone is crazy...but at this moment of time i still will go as to say i will stick with the one x..this must be the longest time i gone without flashing
In all honesty too........my Sensation felt better than my One X.
Please don't go mad at me people. I not a massive sense fan, so that was always the first thing that went once s-off was achieved and all the roms about seem to be sense based or desensed. Not AOSP. I respect all our Devs massively and I am not clever enough or do I have time enough to even begin to learn how to build roms from the ground up using AOSP. But even the sensation was lacking in these roms.
Oh man. I may have to have a long hard think about if I'm ready to leave HTC.

Note is excellent don't let anyone put you off it, I've played with it many times and the size is a sweet spot. I've had the S2 before the HOX and don't find the HOX that much of a jump in size. It's nice the 4.7" but the 5.3" of the note gives you some more real estate.
You get use to the size after a while.
I'm holding ship with the HOX for the time being the only phone that can sway me away will be the SGS3 only if it excels the HOX but for me it'll be down to the software side and not hardware. Sense > TouchWiz.
I'm in a similar situation only that I've not ordered my HOX yet and I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus. My biggest issue is to be frank all the problems you guys seem to be having with the htc , i dont care what people say you should NOT be having these sort of issues with a final retail handset. I jumped to samsung with the galaxy s2 after years of htc handset (android & wm) and looking back I'm glad I did. How can anyone defend this locked bootloader policy? seems like the days of simply plugging the phone in and flashing straight from the box are gone for htc which brings me onto samsung.... everything is geared towards flashing there phones, hell Ive even got a £2 clip which unbricks your samsung should anything go wrong With all that said I always a space in my heart for htc just a shame this whole mess may have put me off this time round.
Come next week when I can upgrade I'm 90% sure I'll order the samsung note partly for the reasons above and partly because it is such a sweet device despite the PenTile display which is not noticeable, trust me
oh and dont go for the gnexus if you use any games what so ever the gpu is crap and the main reason I switching (missing my psx gaming fun)

No way mate ..... dont get me wrong the nexus is very nice and there's more custom roms than you can shake a stick at but the camera is well.... **** and the gpu is shameful I found games really struggle to the point i dont bother now as much pity really .........
I game on my gnex and it doesnt lag??? And the camera is decent aswell especialy video www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePfy25sS0Yo&feature=player_embedded
And at the min gaming on the ox isnt awesome YET just see the genral section thread created already
Best thing to do is go to a shop and test the devices and decide.
Mod or Die
well i am sticking with my htc one x for now...the more i hold it the more i am falling in love with it....it was the same when i had my galaxy s2..was scared to root it in the start but once it was done i could not stop flashing..same with the HOX. once i get my grey replacement that would be it for me...hate it or love it this phone does grow on you and no matter what flaws i still would recommend it

What about GTA for starters? Id say anything thats abit better than the norm and your screwed :/
Right. I'm going to go into the 3 store to play with a galaxy note, along side my One X and compare them in real life usage tomorrow.
Real life usage, not stats on paper, not benchmarks, just what feels best. C'mon HTC don't fail me after 4 years of brand dedication.
Report back tomorrow peeps.

Let me know how that goes. If my One X replacement still has issues I might swap for a Note too.
I've used both nexus and note. Of the two the note is far better. After a day, the size is no issue. Plus the screen looks great, battery from what I've seen is good, but there is noticeable scrolling lag when compared to the one x.
That being said, the slight lag is not bad enough to deter someone. My dad loves his note

Isn't the Note still running Gingerbread. So performance might not be as smooth as iCS.
