One of the most interesting things to come out of CES for me is the Joyride. Apparently it is a car charger that lets you configure apps to launch/stop and settings to toggle when you plug in or detach your phone to/from it. I think it is a powerful idea if they can pull it off, and somewhat better in my opinion than Sony's nfc tags - at least for in-car use. The benefit of the tags is that you can use those anywhere. I plan to use both solutions with my GNex.
I would share a link but I'm not allowed to because I haven't posted enough times yet. Search on YouTube.

It looks like an interesting idea. Here is the Android Central link: http://www.androidcentral.com/hands-cobra-joyride-and-tag-apps
Think this will be on my must have list
Tasker or Automate IT will do exactly this if you have Bluetooth in your car. And the car home has launch on Bluetooth connect built in a well.
I have Automate IT turn off my screen timeout, launch Pandora, and turn off wifi when I get in the car and it connects to my hands free, but only if it is charging. If it is not charging but in my pocket I leave the display timeout as is. Of course it all returns to normal when I leave the car. If you have Bluetooth in your car (and you should) this stop ROCKS!

I also use Tasker for this. In addition I have it send an automated response to any text messages I receive while connected that tells people that I am driving and can't currently text them.
@dct3416, thanks for adding the link.

Must take a look at Automate It. I once looked at Tasker and it seemed a little complicated. I'm sure I could work it out though if only I had the the patience and time.

Anyone know if there is an app like smart actions on the droid razr??
You need to check out Tasker. Actually a lot more versatile than Smart Actions.

Damn 6.50!!!
Tasker blows Smart Actions out of the water if you're willing to learn it.
what are some examples of use?
Take a look at the wiki on the tasker site.
Its got some walkthroughs and examples of how to do some useful stuff.
I use it to turn on wifi when im at home or at work, and turn it off when im not connected for at least 30 seconds, open certain apps when i plug in my headphones.
Theres lots more you can do with it and I plan on diving in more when I have some free time.
How do you use them and for what?

There are several threads on this. I have not used them yet myself but plan to. My understanding is you need an app, either to program their functions or to recognize them or both. Then you are only limited to your imagination.. Say you put one in your car, touching it will then turn off your wifi, turn on your gps, open Google Nav.. Or put one by your door at the house, you come in from work and it turns off your gps, turns on your wifi, turns on call volume & opens your tv schedule app or something.. Whatever you can think of. Others feel free to correct me where I am wrong.
So its an electronic you have to buy?

everything you need to know.
I just downloaded and setup Llama. So far it has been very handy in letting me adjust my settings based on whether I am at work or home.
However, I attempted to setup an event to toggle GPS on when I open the Maps application and to turn off GPS when I close the application. However, it doesn't do so! It did note that it cannot do this on ICS as the permissions to do so have changed. However, via Google Search, I did find some mention of it working for some people but they didn't say how.
Anyone here able to do that? If so, how? If not, any other suggestions (Tasker?) on how I can accomplish this?
It doesn't work on stock. Use custom ROM like CM.

Sorry, should have noted I am on AOKP B32. Any suggestion on how to get this to work?

You probably already got your answer or quit looking by now but you can toggle gps. You need to use the Secure Settings plugin from the Play Store. I think you might need to be a root user to unlock all the functionality as was mentioned before but mine works like a charm now.
Another great find for me was using the Smart Shortcuts app so that when I plug in my headphones, llama turns down my volume to a manageable level and pops up a list of apps (pandora, google music, stitcher...) I use my headphones with. I do the same for when I plug in any USB, it pops up with a link to care home or clock or my alarm app because I'm usually only plugging in at night or in the car.
I just wish I had some other ideas to look through. I'm sure there is a lot more this thing can do that I'm not thinking about.

I think there is an explanation in the app. Google changed how gps could be toggled. I gave up turning off gps a long time ago. It really only uses power when an app requests it and judging by the notification it's not very often. By default llama uses cell towers, but I use wifi to pin point my location. That way my Bluetooth doesn't turn off until I reach my driveway.

Hey guys. I was wondering if there's an easy way to make an NFC toggle such that when the tag is within range a) happens and when it goes out of range b) happens. Essentially I want my phone to into silent mode when i place it on my nightstand and go off silent mode when i remove the phone from the night stand.
I know a "workaround" is to make the tag toggle for each swipe but if possible I'd like to not have to swipe a second time to remove silent mode.
Any ideas?
Yeah, i'm looking for the same... i'm not sure if there is such a thing.
maybe one way would be for an app maker to have a feature where the nfc will be checked say every minute to see if it's still within range. if it is, leave the setting alone. if it's out of range, it will do the 'out of range' action. shouldn't draw much battery I don't think?
I want this feature so I can put a tag in my car so when i'm in the car, it will turn on bluetooth, and when I get the phone out of it's spot, it will turn BT back off. (so it's only on while i'm in the car)

NFC tag to turn BT on, then use Tasker to turn BT off after it looses connection to your car BT device.

that seems like a great app, but I don't think I ever paid 7 bucks for an app lol... and i've gotten some great apps for much less. just saying...
good idea though.
Tasker is well worth its money. You can replace so many apps with it that in the end you'll end up saving loads of money

I've used this in my car
I've faced the same problem in my car.
I've put a tag on the phone mount, when touched it enables car mode.
I've used tasker to take the phone out of car mode when my bluetooth HFP get's disconnected (when car is turned off, or I'm more than 5 m' away).
I can also do the same when the phone is unplugged from the car charger.
It's not perfect, but will work unless you turn the car of without removing the phone, and then on again (no NFC tap to re-enable the car mode).
Hope this helps someone
I really like the HTC's Car app, but there's one thing that drives me nuts. It disables the notification pulldown, which makes things like skipping a track (or any number of other things) much more difficult than it should be. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? If there's not a known workaround, would any devs be willing to look at modifying this behavior? I'd be willing to donate a bit for it...
I think HTC did this as a safety precaution because when it was allowed, you could access anything that popped up and wasn't "drive friendly".
However, I'd love to know if this possible. For example, getting back to navigation after switching back to music takes three or four taps.

I'm definitely interested in this too. Blocked notification bar is driving me nuts!
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Another vote from me to enable it please. On the one x it was blocked on the car launcher but launch a third party app and you had access to it again. Damn annoying as it is now.
lol i just dont use the default HTC car mode. use car home ultra. works like 100 times better and allows for notification bar AND it has default home too
I like Car Home Ultra, but it doesn't read your texts out loud and allow you to respond without ever looking at your phone. If I could do that with CHU I'd switch in a heartbeat.
In case anyone else is still interested in this, someone has finally released an Xposed module to correct these issues! It's called "Car Xposed" and it makes the Car app work exactly like it should! :good::good:
