The root guide is in the wiki, once rooted I suggest 4ext recovery, once both are done download the ROM you want and flash it via recovery

Start studying up on adb, you'll need it.

Getting adb working should be pretty straightforward, there is a link to a guide in my sig if you need it.

Looking to root friends desire - unrevoked...

Hi, i've been looking around to help my friend with his new desire,
I would like to see if this works, according to my research...
If I ran the phone through unrevoked, would this root the phone?
And in turn, let us install rom manager + clockwork mod?
I don't have much experience around here as I am still looking about rooting my nexus
Hope you can help
Details needed.
Bootloader info, phone info...
Sent from my customized HTC Desire using TTP
I'm gonna have to ask about the bootloader info, but it is currently running stock (latest) which I think is 2.2?
EDIT: How do you get into the bootloader? Is it power+ volume down?
Yes.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
If its running 2.2, chances are very high that you can root it with unrevoked. Make sure the hBOOT version is 0.93.xxxx

If its the same as mine, yes unrevoked will do. However, i was having issues with CwM before so now im using amon ra recovery.just a heads up

Ye, thats right, I just found out that it is 0.93
So my plan on my original post will work?
EDIT: Do we need S-off? And how does this affect the phone?

It will work. As long as the drivers required are properly installed. And you don't need s-off unless you are planning to change the boot partitions (eg. Change from Stock hBOOT to CM7r2 hBOOT to get more space for apps)
Sent from my HTC Original Desire using Tapatalk
If your still not 100% sure I don't think you should even try rooting your friends phone. You'll need the htc usb drivers installed on pc, make sure the htc sync apps is not installed.
Use unrevoked to root and install cwm recovery, from there you can install any of the great roms.

Please read the rooting faq in my signature. There's also a guide there which incorporates pre requisite information which (for some unknown reason) is missing from most other guides.
But read the faq too. It's not about blindly following steps. It's about understanding the process and what you are doing.

[Q] Can i root 2.3.3

I have a HTC Desire A8181 that now updated to Gingerbread 2.3.3 and i want to Root it, is it possible?
It was rooted before, but was sent back to HTC under Warranty and was replaced with a completely stock phone.
Would i just use the normal unrevoked3 method?
As far as I know it's absolutely possible, however you should use revolutionary

If not try to perform a full wipe (wipe custom data + wipe cache + wipe dalvik cache) then flash the rom again. You can try this anyway if you want

Yes running a ruu will unroot your phone by placing you back onto the stock HTC rom with android 2.2.1 froyo. And unbranded means that the rom doesn't have carrier branding, like 02 vodaphone 3 tesco mobile ect.

Just out of curiosity, are you going back to stock for warranty reasons or because your selling the phone?
If not did you know that there are custom stock roms which allow you to keep all the benefits of root and have a stock rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318 Look in this thread for Sense based roms (Rempuzzle or DK custom rom being the best 2) and if you need any help flashing them post here, someone will help.

Its not because i am selling the phone or something. Its because i wanted to unroot and then root again and have a rooted HTC Wildfire with stock rom. I will find a xda unroot guide and then i will post it here and ask if its a right unrooting method. I dont wanna get my phone ****ed.

You don't need to unroot to flash a new Rom, most roms are already pre-rooted, a stock Rom would need rooting, busybox a custom kernel etc etc installing the stock roms I mentioned would already have that part done for you and can be flashed from clockwork mod recovery, just download a sense based Rom put it on your sd card then reboot into recovery by powering off the phone, then press volume down and power to get to hboot use the volume buttons to select recovery then press power, once in recovery perform a backup, then select wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache, next choose install zip from sd card and find the rom, install it then reboot into your fresh new HTC sense Rom.
Those roms are custom though so they do have a few slight differences to a fully stock Rom such as new wallpapers that kind of thing.

Use the link i posted above
- Dowload the RUU
- Connect your phone to PC and run RUU
- This will downgrade your phone OS to eclair (android 2.1)
- Let it do the bizniss and when it boots and says finished on your PC,
you will have a ****ty phone. (but dont worry) because this is what
you want
- If it doesnt work, use another RUU and run it. Just make sure it says
2.1.x.x.x in the title to make sure u go back to android 2.1. and not
1.4 or something.
You will not have CM7 after this, or any remnants of it, it will just look like basic android. It will not be branded, i.e. it will not have t-mobile splattered all over it.

Lmao I'm glad you solved your problem but can I just say how much of an asshole I think you are! Everyone who has posted in this thread have just been trying to help you achieve what you wanted to do or like myself offer an alternative which would involves less work when rerooting your device which you did say you wanted to do.
Custom sense roms do not **** up phones especially the 2 I mentioned, its muppets like yourself that don't read instructions carefully and thoroughly, before I rooted my device I made sure I had all the tools and know how to put it all back to stock beforehand. Perhaps you should do the same next time.

[Q] how increase the limited internal space for apps in HTC desire

Hi everyone,
I have got unlocked HTC desire which has very limited internal space for applications. what should i do to increase the space for apps? Can i simply get more space by rooting htc desire and installing custom ROMs? do i need anything else beside rooting for installation process of custom ROMS
Thanks in advance
are u on stock rom or on custom? if you are on stock then i am not sure if you can but install a custom rom with a2sd/int2ext/d2sd or whatever script suits u best. i use a2sd wirh app and dalvik on sd, appdata on nand
It's time you rooted your phone, got rid of the bloatware OR better still go for a custom ROM. Of the several ROMs I have tried over the last few years, I can instantly remember Supernova (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824) and ROMs from LeeDroid, Mildwild. Follow some of these threads and it will give you step by step instructions. All the best.
Thanks for reply. I am using stock Roms with 2.2 firmware. My phone is unlocked but is not rooted and also S-on . Would i have to S lock off in order to install custom ROMS or i can install custom ROMs just after rooting with S-on

the above replies are correct, though i recommend you start with guides...
read the slowly and several times. they are designed to be used for anyone, even if you have no prior experience with rooting. you will also most likely to need to partition your sd card using gparted or 4ext recovery to make more space for apps, also covered in the guides.
then get in the habit of reading and searching...the answers to your queries have almost certainly already been answered...that way you learn faster...same goes for most things in life too

you don't have to s-off, but it is much more advantageous, so do it. the guides will tell you how to do it, just like it did for all the noobs...
if you want go through with this, you will have to be prepared to read and learn, and eventually do it yourself. it may seem scary, but we all had to do it at some point. (if you don't understand terminology, or get an error message along the way, you won't even need to post or open another thread, search it here or in google (for instance), someone else will have had the same issue...)

(remove all spaces in links)
Thanks guys. I appreciate that you guys spend your time in helping others. yea i need to learn and searched because its terminology which make me confuse . I also own galaxy s i9000 which has plenty of space for apps and its also easy to root or install custom roms in galaxy s i9000 as all you need is rooting package and odion..never had to go through this S-On/off things and boat loader stuff

Not really, I don't think. Apparently there is AAHK2 available, but I don't know much about it as I never needed it.
When I s-offed my desire HD I was htcdev unlocked already, I used the manual method to s-off which for me, wasn't hard with lots of previous experience with my HTC legend.
I don't consider myself a noob anymore (I am still learning though), but im not good enough to ever be a developer either, I'll leave that to the gifted elite.
I know there is quite a few guides in the dhd forums that are really good, I'd suggest you have a look yourself and decide appropriately according to your own knowledge and skill which is best for you.
