Help me understand NFC - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello
I am waiting for my SGN to arrive, i was looking at this forum and saw something about NFC Stickers/Tags?
How does it work, is it something like.
You program sticker(with your phone?) -> U scan sticker -> Phone due a background task, fx. starting music on a hifi or something?
Is that it? I am a hobby developer, and this seems to be really really fun to play with.
So what do i need to buy, where can i get the right stickers? Preferably amazon.co.uk or european stores.

Yeah you've got the basic idea. You can program a tag to hold simple information like URLs or vCards. Things like that. The power really comes when you use a tag to activate a task on your phone like you mentioned. Think of them like an alternative to QR codes.
You can get them lots of places online or on ebay. Stay away from the low frequency ones as I've heard they don't work as well (or at all).
Here are some threads:

LOTS of information out there. Just read through the forum.

Not with all the live stuff (would be nice though) but when I flip something up it goes into trash or closes it (think it is nice interaction) also with only pages/programs open shows up in screen slides with this interaction. Could possibly make winmo perform a little better. Sorry for bad wording and such but pressed for time at work Hope someone takes interest in this .
A really good simple app idea for Windows Phone 7
Its funny how one always has a great app idea after the event (read; http://www.windowsphone7.com/ineedt...2526pmodex253D1x2526gridviewx253D0#pbbh21054p),
An app I thought that would be really cool is a supermarket price comparison. The 'story' is that you visit you local store with your shopping list on your phone; the phone checks off the items on the list when you scan their respective barcodes, also as you scan the barcode it brings up the price for the product and the price from the competitor supermarket chains. I think this app would really sell well, and people will buy it because they know they will make their money back in their first shop
What do you guys think?
i would definitely use it
+1 !
but the problem is: who will update the price and the product list?
I believe there already is an API available (for the web -UK supermarkets) which does this for you...all a coder/dev needs to do is build the app.
an API for worldwide would be perfect... i think google provide such api for US/europe?
otherwise, maybe somebody can find an agreement with online stores to provide prices and models ...
really the idea is interesting and someone should start coding it (personnaly i don't currently have enough time )
I remember hearing of the Iphone porting of apps a while back
I was just wandering is anyone actually doing this? I know there is an windows equivalent every now and then but sometimes the apple app works better. I know I am a 6'4 guy that 270, and I love the Lose it App (my fiance has) and I know about vita one (no were near the build in database). And other things that help communicate with others and such. I am not going to apple been there 2x and always perferred windows mobile for the last 6+ years just wanted to ask this. If someone took it up to port apps I am pretty sure there would be hundreds or thousands of people willing to donate/pay for your hard work. Just a thought.
Problem with porting certain apps, is it requires you to actually have a iPhone
If you got some links to apps you would like ported, with screenshots and so on, I'd love to check it out, as porting apps is a good challenge to get familiar with the development environment.
Thanks I meant to put this in the development and hacking section in general not just windows 7 , here is a link to one of them I thought about creating a bounty or reward system for people to request apps and pay developers here to port them? Here is the link for one http://www.loseit.com/
really nice app because the database is constantly updated with nutrition facts from most of places we eat. I will have more later when I repo my girls phone for a while.
I would totally use this. I have the Shopaid app and it is okay, but doesn't update the price and such
The thing is with applications like that, is it depends more on the data that's available. Duplicating the interface into a Metro styled hub for weight-loss and exercise could be done in a day or two, but getting the actual data setup is a completely other story.
Beyond that, you can be totally sure people will duplicate that type of app.

Looks like someones already getting the ball rolling.
Someone is already developing that app actually, just go to Youtube and type "windows phone price check app" and you'll see. I can't post the link because I'm new here! The app looks amazing so far.
My company, with decades of experience with Windows development, is looking to break into mobile development in a big way with the launch of WP7. We have a couple of original ideas we are working on, but we would also like to officially port a successful iPhone app or game for some additional credibility.
I've approached a couple of different iPhone app developers with this proposal:
>>Let us port your app at our expense and we split the proceeds 50/50.
>>You retain all ownership and have quality assurance approval before launch.
I have tried every phrasing I can think of to convince them I am legitimate and that I want to create an arrangement where I take on 100% of the risk, but we share equally in the reward.
So far, not even a reply.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Jason
ebook readers
I curently have an HD2 and will probable end up with a WP7 device at some point when they come out. However I'm a big ebook fan and at the moment i'm tempted to get an android phone so that I can use he Kindle app. I'm waiting to see what developers come up with for WP7.
Do you think there's a good chance of a kinde app or something like it being made for WP7?
Cheers
Steve
I think so. I think the amount of sales will be suprising, and that there will be more hardware with WP7 on it than critics give it credit for. There are alot of peopl ethat HAVE an iPhone that want out. My father just got the AT&T Galaxy S (Captivate) and loves it, diching his iPhone 3G.
I think they would be silly not to. I'd prefer a Nook app on WP7 myself, but something to start would be nice!
Brandon Watson said they were worknig with developers who already had WM apps - that means B&N for sure. MS also has an eboo reader but it's unclear if they are going to bundle it with the phone (not likely). Based on the ease of writing WP7 apps I'd suspect all of the large developers to write a WP7 app and they are permitted to have their ebook stores.
Let's hope that you guys are right and there is a strong enough uptake to make all the big players developer readers for WP7. competition is a good thing after all!
Cheers
Steve
I relay like your idea…
After all because I had nearly the same
But I would give it more features…
X Online Service for the markets where they can register the products with barcode and price
-„POI“ Database with geodata of the markets
-Markets can enter special offers
X Online „Community“ section
-Users can Post reviews and vote for products
-Users can vote for markets / stores
-Users can enter alternate products
X Private section for Users
-You can make your grocery list an search for alternate products
-You can enter an amount of saving and a distance you would go for
So the system could give you a shopping tour
Now to the Phone App
X The App can download your grocery
X You can make a Live price comparison with the barcode
-The app could give you a market / store, it would consider your amount of saving and a distance you would go for
X You can do a live vote for Products and Stores
X You can enter a grocery list
X You can search for alternate products
X The app would use the geodata and GPS
SHOP NAV!
I thought of an app years ago called shop nav.
You type in your shopping list and your phone guides you around the store in the correct route. If your in your local then you know where everything is.but how many times have you shopped in a different store one only to find everything is in a different place. You spend most of your time doubling back on your self and walking up the same flaming isle 3 times!.Supermakets are getting bigger and if an app like this was possible it would save everyone time and ease shop congestion.

MYO Gesture Armband - The Jedi Force !

So I recently discovered a cool new piece of hardware. Looked around XDA and couldn't find anything, so I thought I'd share. ( or maybe I couldn't find it just 'cause I'm a noob and didn't look properly - forgive me).
The tool is a called "MYO" developed by Thalmic Labs. It's basically a Jedi force bracelet . Apparently it can connect to a multitude of devices via bluetooth and controls it via gestures, i.e, changing slides in powerpoint. I think its pretty awesome and would love to get one, especially since they have released its API so you can also develop your own pc/android apps for it. Only problem is that I don't have $150 USD being a student .
If you guys want to check it out you can visit thalmic's site (I can't post the link 'cause I'm a new user. Just google "thalmic labs myo")
May the force be with you

Lol on topic, here's the link for all you guys: https://www.thalmic.com/myo/. Seems like the device is still on pre-order, shipping 2014 with MSRP $159 in our geo. So perhaps it's advisable to wait till then.
Otherwise indeed looks like a fantastic device. Any ideas which apps will be available at launch?
Hey comunity,
As I finaly decided ton buy a Myo, I was ofc thinking about talk about it on xda. Let's dig a topic
I'm surprised by the way how few topics are opened about it here. I guess this techno is not enough known for the moment .
So here are my first impressions after wearing it for some hours :
Bought it on Amazon.com (because I was rejected by ThalmicLabs as "suspected of Fraude", what seems have already happend with french cards VISA).
Pros :
- The device is beautifull (Got the white one), great designed
- Confortable. I wear it for around half a day, and even if i still feel it, it doesnt "hurt" my arm or block blood circulation. Btw, as I work in suit, I can't totaly bend my arm (limited to ~95% of the movement)
- Even if it's 200% less accurate than a real mouse, it's a pleasure to stay in front of the screen, trying to controle mouse with your arm.
- A f*****g new way to interact with devices (As we are actualy limited to mouse & tactile)
Cons :
- Not enough movement recognition (only 5 gestures, with 1 aften used to unlock, so 4)
- Movement recognition is to much approximative to be used daily
- Muscle don't send the same "information" when your arm is leaning on the armrest of you chair. So you can't realy use it without to have stand your arm right in front of you (what is weird in office ^^)
- Some moves are not well thinked : Trying to close your fist (to make a " mouse click") when you are targeting the little red cross with your arm tight becomes a real challenge.
- It happend, REALLY OFTEN, that you unlock your device by mistake. Especialy when typing on a keyboard.
So I think the next big step for Thalmic and its community is to work a lot on the software to be more precise about movements. There is a beta of store, with a dev dedicated part, what let us hope about more and more app. But as Thalmic made a "all-in-one" tool to create app (called connectors for MYO), developers are limited to the what have been gave and THINK by Thalmic.
My impression is that Thalmic Labs had a very great idea of device, but are really bad to produce a good software to work with.
I.E. : You can't even change the time between last movement and auto-lock. It's fixed at 2 secondes and you'll have to deal with it.
I.E. 2 : You can't change the patern to unlock device.
So, to conclude, a very very BIG potential, but a lot of work to get it .

How to use a phone (Android and/or Windows) as an NFC-tag keychain?

Let me start by saying that I hope that I've posted this topic in the right place.
The scenario: so let's say I'd have a bunch of devices I wanted to unlock via NFC. Per device I'd have 1 tag.
The problem: but then I'd have to carry a bunch of tags around -- and god forbid if I'd happen to lose one.
The solution: what would make things much more convenient, is to use my phone as a NFC-tag keychain. I'd store the virtual tags in an app or some thing, and I'd emulate a tag through the phone when I want to unlock a device.
The questions: how and what would enable me to store multiple tags on my phone, and easily access them? And if I would select a virtual tag, could my phone then use that virtual tag to emulate a phyisical NFC tag?
I've genuinely tried to research all this, but I could just not find any clear cut answers. I guess that my sought-after-solution is either not mainstream enough, or I'm not posing the right queries to Google. Also I can't do my own testing, because my current phone does not support NFC. My near-future phone definitely will. You might ask why I am posing these questions now then? Reason is is that right now I want to building some NFC readers for locks for said devices. But before I do so, I'd have to know if my phone can indeed act as an NFC-tag keychain.
This many views and no response? Surely someone has got an insight into the matter?

[APP][BETA][Android][FREE] BoozeMap, your guide for the cheapest drinks aroud

Hey there.
I've been developing an app that tells users places around them that sell cheap drinks. These places are added by others users, who also tell the kind of drink and prices there. Being so, I need beta testers that, besides the testing, will help me getting an initial database of users/markers.
I have a beta page where you can check some more details, but here are some features developed so far:
- FB and G+ login;
- Set a radius around you
- Filter by drink
- Filter the cheapest place
- Get directions to a place
- Add/Edit/Remove markers, that get associated to your account, so you can login on several devices and still have them
Other features I'm considering:
- Real-time markers (no need for users to move their marker to update the area within their set radius)
I'll probably launch the beta during this month.
Thanks in advance!
if this was my app i would target all the places that sell booze, that way you would get the proper prices as the way you have it now anyone could just say anything and end up making your app useles, a bonus would also be by having all the places that sell the booze update there cheap deals then you could charge them on a month basis like say 5 dollars.
Yeah, I've thinking about that as well, and I think you're right. I'm not sure about charging bar owners, maybe that would kill the app, just wondering.
Do you have something like a "report-button" or a "Up- or Downvote" - function so that places or fake-entries will be deleted automatically? But actually I like the idea

Now it depends on the paradigm (places by users vs owners), but in both cases I think it makes sense to have at least the upvote/downvote. Thanks, let's see how it goes, this approach based on the owners is quite demanding, got to get lots of contacts :good:

Inquiring about developer to design app for my friends business

Anyone here that can design apps want to maybe discuss business on designing an app? My friend is a professional shopper. He travels around his state and goes to stores like KMart, Walmart, Big Lots, etc in search of merchandise to resell.
He just google maps around the area he is thinking of hitting up and then goes from there. I told him it would be awesome to have an app that would for example bring up all the Walmarts in a given area, all the KMarts in a given area and have information on the store such as hours, and when he last visited it. Maybe even some sort of trip planner and mapper to shop all the K-Marts in one particular city.
Simple ideas really.
What kind of price would he be looking at? I have no idea what is involved in coding. The idea seems simple (pulling data off google maps, etc) and adding things in like last time visited, notes, etc... He has money but it would mainly be for 1 person. He's not going to invest a bunch of money, as his way of shopping and just going off memory, etc has been working totally fine. But in my opinion an app would be awesome as he literally uses his phone all the time for this business.
PM me or post?

I doubt you'll find a developer to do this just for one person because it's their work and they control it so it would only be worth it if they built it so that anyone in your friends business and more could use it.
Besides, if you do a Google search for:
"Apps for secret shoppers"
Or
"Apps for secret shopping"
You'll probably find an app(s) that already does most if not all of what you were thinking.
You can find many developers on Upwork and Fiverr, but they're not professional as an agency. I know which type of website your friend actually needs. Catch me up here for exclusive help on website application services.
