[Q] Screen Replacement Questions. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a broken Screen on a Activated Evo, and another one that is fine but bricked. Am I safe to take the guts out of the broken screen and put them in the unactivated one and stay away from a screen replacement?
Seems it could work in theory. Would like some feedback before attempting.

Basically you'd be swapping the screens which would work if they both have the same kind of connectors the evos have 2 different types of screen connector ribbons, one wide and one narrow

I'm not particularly sure of the answer to your question specifically, but I just wanted to say I replaced my Evo's screen after it took a dive into a mosh pit... it's really not so bad. So if that's the route you have to go, don't be intimidated!

Thanks evil.
What about transferring a screen though? That's what I am doing. When you say not hard. I take it you mean replacing with a new screen.

I'm not trying to spend any money on a new screen.

He already told you. There are two different types of lcd connectors, and the ONLY way to know which one you have is to open the phones up. So if they are the same, then yes, you can simply swap them out.

I personally had to replace my screen recently when my fiance set it on the hood of a truck and it slid off and landed screen first into the gravel. Replacing the screen was easy, I found a step by step video on YouTube for it. Also you mention that you don't want to pay for a new screen, I found one on Ebay for 14.99 with free shipping AND it came with the tools to complete the replacement. Pretty cheap and I got the new screen in about 4 days, can't beat the IMO.

Thanks. Have a used one hopefully the same model. Lol.

can you see anything on your screen?
or let me put it like this, does/did your screen turn off fast and instantly when you pushed the button or did it dim out at a nice smooth pace?

So I guess you want to know if you have the wide or thin ribbon cable? The only way to tell is to open your phone up, but the more common cable is the thin one.
evo lcd
i would think to look what hardware you have in phone info 002 003 whatever
can anyone verify this? I bought a a screen and housing but the its the thick cable and I need the thin one. I knew I took a gamble but lost. So I was hoping on buying another evo with a broken screen and just replace the motherboard, but would like to know if there is anyway to have the seller check which one he has without having him open it.
going on 2 weeks with no EVO
jerryparid said:
1. Connect PC to Evo in charge/development mode; then adb shell dmesg > evoinfo.txt. Look for "novatec" or "epson" in the txt file
or
2. Download terminal emulator from market, type dmesg, find "novatec" or epson" in the output
or
3. Add HTC Power Widget, change the screen brightness. Instant change = Epson, gradual/fading change = Novatec

Did you buy the screen and housing from a reputable seller on Ebay? If you did he should be more than happy to exchange the wide cable for the thin one for you.
In any case, I would think the screen/housing would be cheaper than even a cracked screen evo, unless you get an amazing deal.

He's not a dealer just had a refurbished housing and screen. I think i'm done messing with it. I'll buy a used working EVO and sell the housing I just bought and sell my broken EVO for parts.

[Q] Can any digitizer be used on any Evo 4G?

I'm going to replace a digitizer soon for a friend who broke the glass on her phone. I know that there are two different types of pannels for LCDs and their ribbon cable is different. My question is can I use the a generic digitizer for the EVO (like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/Sprint-HTC-EVO-...30?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23120a967ac ) and put it on her evo?
Shortened question:
do all evo digitizers work on all evo's?
It should work just be carefully with third parties I'll tell you from experience from my iPhone that I have replace and my friends , is better to get the original part cause those don't work properly sometimes , and you will spent extra money for nothing
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I wish I could answer that, I just ordered one myself... My serial number starts with HT12NHL so if yours is the same I'll post if it works and which one I got. I doubt you want to wait 2 days for that but I think they are mostly generic. The important part from reading thus far is the screen tools and adhesive you use. Many people reported awful results without the right stuff.... I'll report back when I finish.

Atrix backdoor cracking

I just noticed this after I took my Atrix out if its case, but it's cracked where pressure is put on the corners when taking it off. ):
Anyone else having this problem? Any idea what to do to seal the crack? Or do I have to buy a new backdoor? I just got my Atrix like 3 months ago.

Mine is doing the same thing. I don't think many things can fix it, considering you keep flexing, bending and cracking the plastic every time you have to take off the cover for a battery pull. Just be cautious when you take the cover off, don't forcefully rip it off.
like already said, just be careful while taking it off. you can find a new one here:
http://cnn.cn/shop/motorola-mb860-atrix-black-battery-cover-p-11668.html
Thanks guys. Another quick question, does the replacement cover come with the mesh part that goes over the speaker? Or would I have to take that out from my old cover and stick it on the new one?
Contact Motorola and use the online chat function. I had the same problem and they had one shipped and to my home in 3 days. No charge.
Worthy of a Thanks? Lol.

DUDE. Yes. Thank you. I shall do that right now. I didn't even think to do that.
The Motorola solution is by far cheaper. But just to let you know the CNN.cn. website one is basically a factory part. Even has the stickers on it. I got it and the housing for $22 FROM THERE

Cracked my screen, what are my options?

Hoping to hear from people who have dealt with this before. Cracked my screen pretty badly but luckily (relatively...) it still works as far as i know. I don't have insurance and while I'm gonna deal with it for now I'd eventually like to get it replaced, fixed, or upgrade to a new phone. What are ballpark figures for cost considering my contract isn't up for another year and a half and i don't have insurance? What would you do if you were in my situation?

Slightly off topic, but how'd you manage to do it? I know our screens are Gorilla Glass and that mine has been through some pretty crazy drops already...
Are you the guy who called me this morning about the Galaxy S2 Screen? or is this just a coincidence in my world?

Ultimately i can't blame anything but my own carelessness. Long story short i accidentally crushed it between some heavy metal hinges on a forklift...the gorilla glass didn't stand a chance.

my advice: get it fixed
newalker91 said:
Sprint will not repair the screen, so that's not an option. Replacing the phone would be around $250 cheapest for a used device, $550 for a retail price device. Sending it in to a 3rd party repair company would cost you the $150 for the screen plus hourly labor, making it closer to $200. Factor in shipping cost and you may as well buy a phone.
Replacing the screen is easy. Undo the 6 philips head screws in the back housing, work a thin plastic wedge around the rim and pop the housing off. Undo the two screws on the board, unclip the ribbon cables, reverse the process onto the new screen. Takes about 15 minutes if you haven't done it before.

But where do you just buy the gorilla glass for this phone?

If you do find just the glass they don't seal right then they look worse than a cracked screen.
Why not just add insurance and get it fixed that way
From the 2nd galaxy
I have a brand new white LCD for epic touch if you want it, I don't need it . Same thing as what thy linked on eBay. Pretty simple to assemble too. I'd sell it to ya way cheaper.

Sprint won't allow that. If that were the case everybody would be doing that.
If I were you I would buy dude's screen who is posted above this post and after that I would go on YouTube to see if I could find a video on how to assemble or replace the Epic touch's screen. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
If I helped you out in any way please thank me. Thanks.
If the Insurance was added the best you could do is process and insurance claim and get a refurbished phone for $100.
Changing out the screen is pretty simple. Just make sure you watch the camera connection at the top and the one at the bottom of the board. Every DIYer seems to miss those two.
It's very unfortunate that our assemblies cost so much, when the iphone assembly is like 40 bucks and to get it installed will run about 90 if you don't do it yourself. Our phone seriously needs cheaper replacement parts.

That would be awesome! Just PM'ed you
You can search on Craigslist and eBay for phones with bad esn. And simply make one working out of two.
You can ask on forums for people who bricked their phones beyond returning point and sprint refuses to help them.
But of the guy above gives you a good deal. Take it.

Have you actually had Sprint tell you no? Have you actually gone into a corporate store and asked?
I ask because they replaced my cracked screen on my HTC EVO 4G a few months back, no questions asked, totally free.

Yes, I went in the day it happened and asked if they could replace it or what my options were. Other than buying a new phone for retail price, they said they couldn't do anything and didn't even do the repairs themselves. They just referred me to World of Wireless (I called them and they were charging $250 for the 'custom order' repair they'd have to do).
Buy a new one off Amazon for $8.00 and install it yourself. It take about a half hour and save a bunch of money

Keyboard is dying, can it be fixed?

I think the keyboard on my Desire Z is beginning to die, it started a month ago where the spacebar would sometimes not respond. It still at times doesn't work, but now also when pressed may insert 2 spaces instead of one. The responsiveness of the rest of the keyboard is generally hit and miss, sometimes it seems to work other times it feels slow and like I have to press harder then before.
I treat the phone pretty well, no big drops, but I did buy it used. The keyboard worked perfectly when I bought it however.
Is it possible to fix this or is the phone just showing it's age?
Thanks.
Sure, a new keyboard is around 30$, but you can usually just open it up and clean it thoroughly, let it dry completely, and most often you are as good as knew

Is this something a layman can do? I'm not totally inexperienced, but I do not trust my ability enough to not potentially ruin my phone. Also is there a guide to disassembling the phone around? Last question, if a new keyboard is around $30, would it be more worth it to do a full case replacement while I'm at it?
Thank you.
Look up g2 dissasembly or screen replacement, terms like that, in google and on youtube. Pretty easy so long as you are even slightly handy. I think it would be another $40 or so to replace the casing. And you would need to go more in depth on what you are doing including swapping the digitizer. Its more work but not too hard. It would be up to you if its worth it
