Poor quality control or just me? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I bought two GN's from different places. One was a grey import, the other locally on contract.
The import lasted 3 days before it had reception issues. Would have full signal on startup then rapidly drop within 30 seconds to nothing at all. It has gone back under warranty and is currently being repaired.
The second one I have had for around 3 weeks now and its beginning to do the same thing. Won't have any reception where I have full reception with my HTC. It's become a paperweight overnight! Does anyone else have these problems? The first one was rooted with custom ROM etc, the second one is factory yakju.
What good is a 'top of the range' phone when it doesn't even last a month? Am I going to have to hot-swap these two phones in and out of repair? Lucky they have a 2 year warranty I guess!

I don't have any problems and have had mines for weeks.
Bought mines from Negri before the holidays. Came with yakjuxw build.

I agree with you. This is where Samsung, Google, Moto, really all of Android has a problem. I lucked out. My phone has been a champ. I have not experienced any of the screen, battery draining and reception issues that have been posted on the boards... BUT having said that, there should not be 1000s of people with problems. Overwhelmingly, I'm sure most phones are just fine. However the amount of defective phones that make their way out to the wild and give all the phones a bad name is unacceptable.
When you are trying to pull people away from iOS, (and 4.0 was made to do just that) the way to do it is to NOT let crap devices tarnish the good name of Android.

I noticed the death grip issue with both my and my brother's Gnexes. When you hold near the bottom of the phone, reception suffers.

Thanks to Adrynalyne's recommendation, made a separate thread.

How did this go from GSM to CDMA?
OP is GSM.

If you want me to create a brand new thread about it, I am more than happy to.
But the title "Poor Quality Control" seemed to be quite suiting.
Because even GSM Galaxy Nexus coming out Samsung factories have screen issues and microphone cut off issue..

It is just confusing, because the OP has reception issues, and the other issues you are introducing into the thread just serve to confuse everything and everyone while causing the thread to careen into the chasm of off topic.
I would make a new thread about it, tbh.

2nd Nexus - reception still sucks

I burned through my extended battery in 2 1/2 hours today, and 4g drops were ridiculous. I finally called tech support, and they told me to exchange for a new one. So, I got my second one, still getting 4g drops. My wifes Thunderbolt (my old phone) holds 4g full strenght in my house all day. I am highly disappointed in this phone. If Rezound gets s-off by January 15, I may be switching. It sucks, because I really like this phone other than the signal.
Also, when I talked to tech support, she said there is an update coming in March, which I also read elsewhere on these forums. Why would they wait until March, seems kind of wierd.
I always read about people complaining about this phone. I have this to say to you:
If you don't like it get another phone.
I'm sure there are plenty or Rezounds out there for you.
Haven't you guys read that the LTE network has been on the fritz?
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk
Cool story bro.
Sounds like an issue with the LTE tower near you. My reception has been great. I'm at 14 hours and I still have 19% left...barely had it 24 hours. If you have multiple phones wigging out, there are two possibilities:
1) The User
2) The Network
Let me guess, you restored all of your titanium backups and/or restored from Google Servers?
Here's another thought. Did you get a new 4G Sim card or did they just pop the old one into the new phone? Ta-Da.
Omg so many Verizon-noobs complaining, of course it has bad battery, it's LTE...
By the way i dont believe you in going from 100% to 0% in 2 and a half hours with two different batteries, unless you are dumb and has screen on 100% etc. If, however, you are serious, call Verizon or something.
Actually, half you guys are arrogant assholes. No, I installed everything fresh, my f*%$ing Titanium files wouldn't transfer from old Nexus back to my computer without hanging up. Yes, I have a high-end computer with no issues, yes the samsung drivers are installed, MTP sucks. Yes, I owned a TB since day one and never had 4g reception issues in my house. No, there are not tower issues, I know how to troubleshoot. I get 10mbs down on both this phone and the TB, except the TB doesn't lose its 4g signal. And yes, I got a new SIM card with my new Nexus.
Plus, I work downtown on the 33rd floor, and my TB held a 4g signal most anywhere in my office, even in the ****ter in the middle of the floor. My Nexus, burned through the battery twice in 8 hours and was in 3g half the day. But, I guess it's user error. It's clear as day there are issues with reception, it's just can you tolerate it.

No one said I burned through 2 batteries, I said I burned through an extended battery in 2 1/2 hours, screen is on auto, and you are an arrogant prick also. Do you assume everyone is dumb because they have issues with their phone? Also, I have been on 4g since day 1 with the Thunderbolt, I know where f##$ I get 4g and where I don't.
I had a little over 12hrs 36min with minimal usage in an area with known bad signal and had 21% left today, go figure i guess. Granted I only used my phone during my breaks and lunch. Still good for being connected to LTE all day imho. Im happy with the results I've had and I am totally realistic with battery life with an LTE phone, so much so i bought the extra battery+charger. If i happen to be in an area when I know I won't have the option to charge my phone, i swap the battery and have near full charge. It's awesome.
Software issue. Go cry to VZW please.
Yaaaaawn. User err... ogance.
Crazy world, ay?
You guys really are being dicks.
First off, it's clearly not the distance from the 4G tower because the thunderbolt is working just fine.
Second... the guy posts here saying he's had trouble with his second device. And being that an older device is working just fine he's looking for some answers. He's not trying to craptalk the device, but looking to see if anyone else has had the same trouble. That way in can gauge if he should attempt to get a third replacement, or swap out the phone for another device... or maybe someone figured out an issue with a specific ROM or discovered a radio that fixed his issue.
Instead he gets you Trollolols that are being complete dorks by telling him to switch to rezound or cry to VZW.
If you have nothing substantial or beneficial to say to his predicament, why is it so hard to just to stfu and move along?
Take that crap to androidforums.com where it belongs.
To the OP... have you attempted a different radio? Here's an article on it.

And you can try here to download some.

Gall0ws, thanks for the links, and support. I actually flashed the new radios on my last nexus, didn't get much of an improvement. The TB is between 75 - 85 dbm in my house, and the Nexus (including the new one), is typically between 95 - 115. I don't even care about the reading, because when I have 4g, it's fast. It's the drop outs to 3g that suck. Also, going to monitor this device for a few days before I flash the new radios, so I can really say if they made a difference. This just sucks, I was really hoping for an improvement over the Tbolt.
kwkslvr, I will take the screenshot, then punch it in your face. Do you think I am exaggerrating? Do you think I felt like taking all the **** off my phone, reflash everything back to stock and relock it, then waste an hour at Verizon, then reroot and put all my **** back on, I have no time for that. My thunderbolt is the original day one issue by the way, I don't exchange things for no reason. I don't use Titanium for anything other than restoring certain apps that I have that are no longer in market, no data.

I haven't had problems with my GN, but I did find these two articles interesting regarding the whole 4G problems w/ some GN owners. I'm sure it isn't any condolence but...

2.http://www.droid-life.com/2011/12/2...gnal-indicator-to-better-match-other-devices/
What I find most disturbing is VZW "fix" for this is to just change/ fake what the signal actually is at and they aren't stating if the GN is correct or incorrect?!?! lol
By the way, when I got approval from Tech to exchange my device, she said there was an update coming in March in regards to the signal display issues, seems odd they would wait til March for an update. Just repeating what she said, nothing more.
Here is a speedtest with my signal strength, speeds are fine, and I am reading 101 dbm.

The fix might not be simply falsifying any data but perhaps correcting an issue where the software is improperly calculating it. Which of course could lead to a lot of other issues such as excessive power drain because the phone thinks it needs to increase the power to the antenna instead of leaving it alone or reducing it.
For anyone having an issue with their signal, just keep a close eye on the radio threads. As soon as a new one gets leaked, they'll post it up and you can try it out.
And it can take a while, for example, my thunderbolt didn't have a good radio until on that was leaked Fall of this year. There is no rhyme or reason to it. some radios work better for some and not so good for others.
Obviously, if the phone isn't usable for his area, march is a long time to wait for an official update for verizon. But typically this stuff gets leaked out before an official push anyway.
Anywho, JC. Thanks for the links.
No major problems here
I've been running my phone for 2 days here without any significant battery issues; at least none more that I expected based on battery size and playing time. I've ordered the extended battery for insurance, but I fully expect that to do what I need. My only complaint at this point is signal strength vs. other VZ phones I've seen sitting right next to me. I have being disappointed here, am I alone?
Feel free to take a swing, but I don't think it'll fix your GN. I'll be awaiting the screen shot.
The AnandTech article is completely correct. I experienced a similar thing with my iPhone back in the day. This is a GOOGLE phone with as little Verizon interference as possible. Carriers want their users to think that they have GREAT reception everywhere they go. Those numbers are typically fudged, it's nothing new, I promise. As far as 4G drop off to 3G goes, most LTE phones suffer from this. Your T-Bolt is an older device. I'm sure you can't possibly have forgotten the number of LTE-related issues that device was plagued with early on. I remember a buddy of mine returning his because as cool as 4G was, 10% battery drain an hour on LTE while sleeping was just plain unacceptable. The Bionic has had issues. Most likely ALL VZW LTE phones are going to initially have issues the way that LTE and CDMA are basically taped together with very non-sticky painters tape.
I've seen connectivity issues with my MiFi related to specific locations that I'm in (I'm a heavy traveler with work). Any "fix" will be purely for display purposes. The day that release hits will be the day I'll be on XDA trying to research how block the update notification. The GN is currently displaying true and accurate reception strength and I'm sure it's driving Verizon up the friggin wall.
Ok, I'll stop giving everyone a hard time. But really, if the device sucks in your area, I'd return it and wait for a fix. In all seriousness, as you now confirmed from flashing modems, no modem is gonna make THAT big of a difference overall. Constructively, I'd wipe the device, log in with my Google Account, install zero apps, and see what it does. If my battery life sucked, I'd take it to the Verizon store and ask for a new battery. If that battery sucked (like draining dead 3 hours in sleep mode) I'd take the device back and exchange it.
It's not that I'm calling you a liar, it's that typically that kind of behavior is faulty hardware. Having it twice in a row is abnormal. In all fairness, my first iPhone had a bad battery and died in 2 hours (permanently). My second iPhone would overheat and lock up. My third iPhone was "fine" other than the fact that it was an iPhone.
Did it leave a bad taste in my mouth? Yeah, sure, but I still accept the fact that it was a weird chain of events and that the vast majority are perfectly fine. What I'm saying, nicely, is that both your first and your second device are not normal. It's not Google's, Verizon's or Samsung's fault...well, Samsung's for putting together a few bad units, but you know what I mean.
Haven't said 2nd device has bad battery life, just 4g drops. Hoping battery life will be better on this one.

I definitely think something is wrong with battery life. I bought the extended battery and my phone is at 20% in 4 hours with screen brightness at zero and light texting and a lil fb. I feel like the regular battery lasted longer than the extended one I might test that next.

High pitch squeal / squeek / fax tones during phone calls

Anybody running into this? I bought a GNex about 2 weeks ago and when on a call I get a high pitch squeal randomly. Loud... like pull the handset from my head loud. The person on the other end doesn't hear it. I called VZW several times and they say they haven't heard of this. My wife got the same phone when I did and it happens to her, too. My twin got the phone about a week later and his is fine. I took the phone in to VZW earlier this week and they mailed me a replacement... it does it also. I changed the ROM to the Open Kang ROM to see if it might be a software thing... still doing it. Very frustrating. It happens when sitting in my office on 4G or 3G, when driving, etc... no real rhyme or reason that I've been able to figure out. The squeal happens every 3-15 minutes without any real pattern. I don't see any notifications or anything that are new after the squeal takes place.
If anybody else is experiencing this can you post? If you fixed please advise! Thanks!!!

Yes, that happened to me when i was running stock at first too. Once i flashed AOKP 4.0.3 and franco's kernel, I haven't had that problem at all. It was REALLY annoying, sporadic, no rhyme or reason. It was also waaayyy louder than i thought the speaker could ever get ironicly enough. Also dont know if the new radios might have helped too, I flashed those separately because they aren't included on the 4.0.3 roms. Hope it helps =\
I called Verizon about this again today. I had enough trouble with one device that they sent me a second device. The second device does it too. Very frustrating. The device is also much slower than my old Incredible. I officially hate this device. Should be faster with a solid connection to 4G. I'm going to see what is necessary for VZW to somehow get me out of this device and into anything different. Hell, at this point I'm ok with an iPhone... anything but this.
I'm going to use this thread to track what I've been doing in the hopes that it can help others if they are dealing with VZW with this issue.
Dec/11 - bought the GNex new. Had the squealing problems and talked with the store I bought it from. They thought it was an app and suggested I make changes to my apps. I did that for a week or so and they finally exchanged the phone for new.
Jan/12 - new device arrives. Same trouble. I dropped the stock OS and went to the OKP OS. Same trouble. Figure I'll take notes for vzw and see if I can figure it out. What I found...
Seems to happen when talking with other mobile users, never to a land line. Later narrowed it down to only other vzw users, did not happen when talking to at&t users. Later narrowed it down that it only happens to other vzw users who are using the GNex device as well.
Called vzw last week after growing frustrated again. They had me do some troubleshooting on the device and re-provisioned my account. Same trouble. They sent me another new device. I put this device back to stock and relocked.
Feb/12 - 3rd device arrives. Stock OS, no apps installed. Had the same problem that same day. Called vzw the next morning and they had me put the device in safe mode so that they could determine if the problem was hardware or software. If you didn't know there was a safe mode now you know. Boot holding the down vol button until you're in the OS. Immediately had the same problem.
Called vzw back and demanded a different device. They told me they couldn't change the device because I was outside of 14 days. No kidding, I wouldn't be outside of 14 days if vzw hadn't been asking me to do all of this troubleshooting. I finally agree to pay full retail price if they credit my account for the past 3 months of troubleshooting. Nope. They make me upgrade eligible and I went a completely different direction to an iPhone hoping that this stupid squeal would be gone. I'll sell the GNex for close to retail on Craigslist at this point.
Mar/12 - iPhone is running for a day and I talk with my wife (GNex device). The squeal is there but MUCH SOFTER in volume. I will talk with my brother as I leave work tonight because I always have trouble with him on the phone. Hopefully this will help me know for sure.
What I think I'm finding is that it's not necessarily my GNex that had a problem... it's the reception from OTHER GNex users that is causing me the trouble. My wife has complained about the problem as well but at a much lesser frequency and only when on the phone with me. We don't talk on the phone that much. The curious piece is that my brother doesn't have the problem.
More to follow as I figure out for sure whether or not the iPhone has the same problem. If so then it's not my device, nevermind that I'm on my 4th device in 3 months. VZW has been entirely worthless through this process and has made me fight the entire way. Their customer service is horrible and the managers that I have been talking to should be fired. I can't believe they allow managers to talk with customers the way some of these guys do (especially this last Paul LaFranky dude (not sure about his last name)).
So I just came across this thread while doing my normal daily browsing here and find it interesting.
My nephew who has a SGSII here in east coast Canada on Bell txt'ed me earlier to ask if I ever get a "crazy squeal noise from your phone when you're trying to make/receive a call".
It's not all the time. He said it happened about 4 times in the past few months and it's only a land line. He doesn't make a lot of voice calls, mainly the 1 land line (work). When it happens, he hangs up and calls back and it's fine.
It may be completely unrelated to your issue. He's on stock gingerbread.
Anyway, thanks for posting the details and keeping record, i'll follow this for sure.
I have now had two calls today with the high pitch noise. At this point it is def not my device as I'm now on an iPhone. Good news is I can go back to the gnex. Bad news is that I'm all but certain that gnex devices are somehow SENDING these tones. With as unhelpful as vzw has been I'm beginning to think I may simply need to call those people less often... So annoying. I'll call vzw in the morning and see what they have to say. Ugh.
Mine does it too. It is my second one as my first stopped working on 3g so they replaced it. The first phone did it too. I just live with it.... I dont talk on phone much.
I get them as well with the GN, but I was also getting it with my thunderbolt from time to time.
My brother is upgrading to 4.0.4 today and will drop a new OS on his GNex. Once he does that I have asked him to call me to chat for a little bit. It would be great if that takes care of the problem! Fingers crossed. If that doesn't solve the problem I will call VZW with the additional info. If it does then I'll go back to the GNex and sell this new iPhone.
Update - called VZW to have my account updated with the latest notes. While on the phone the lady I spoke with acknowledged that there is a KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS PROBLEM with Samsung devices. The devices that she said are affected are the Galaxy Nexus, the Charge and the Stratosphere. Samsung is supposedly working on an update that will address the problem. No ETA for that update.
I sure wish someone had told me about this sometime over the past 3 months of troubleshooting... it would have saved me the money for the iPhone as well as the hassle with vzw. Hopefully someone here will get some good out of this.
How odd. I have a VZW Nexus, but have not encountered this issue. I don't often make calls, but they sound fine when I do.
The problem is on the other end for the person you are talking to... they will hear a high pitch squeal from time to time. Mine would do it as often as every 10-15 seconds or so or could be as little as every half hour (or not at all depending on length of call).
I have talked with my brother a couple times today after he upgraded to 4.0.4 and haven't had the problem at all. I wonder if that update includes some work to fix this. ??

Signal problems, what are my options?

As many, many other users of the galaxy nexus have reported, I am having some miserable signal problems. Obviously, CDMA nexus here.
I wish the issue was only that the signal on my phone is bad, but unfortunately it extends beyond that: my entire signal is lost at times. Usually it's intermittent and will happen 4 or 5 times a day for only 30 seconds at most at a time, but sometime (Usually late at night), it will lose its signal for even an hour or two, and I'll watch the battery plummet from as high as 54% to 0 as it searches for a signal the whole time.
I realize this is nothing new for some, but I almost feel like the problem went away for the whole world except for me, due to the low volume of threads related to the issue at all on the boards here. At least, recent ones.
What are my options? I don't really like the idea of trading in my nexus for a refurbished phone. Is 4.03 supposed to solve this problem? I had also read that rooting and flashing radios doesn't make much of a difference. To those of you with the CDMA nexus, what have you done to alleviate this problem? Or are you waiting patiently for an update?
Thank you in advance.
If bought new then return as faulty. Easiest solution.

The problem didn't go away. Most people had to make the decision to either live with it or trade it in on a RAZR or Rezound.

You could:
1. Trade it in for another GNex, on the "hopes" that yours is defective.
2. Trade it in for something else.
3. Live with it & wait it out on the hopes that someday Verizon will ship updated radios that will help. Current rumors say that could still be a couple of months away...
I am on the option 3 plan.
The leaked 4.0.3 radios have had limited & mixed results. For those who they do help, they don't seem to do a whole lot. There are a couple of people who had really good luck. Pretty much the same story for those of us who got Hardware version 10 phones - Haven't noticed any appreciable difference between it and the 9 I got on opening day.
Good luck!
strongergravity, thank you, that was extremely helpful; I was curious to how my fellow Nexus bretheren were dealing with the issue.
If a potential update can fix the radio, then I too will stick with number 3 as you have. Call me a masochist, but this thing is just too nice to part with.
Thank you very much for the detailed response.

I just saw your thread right after I created the exact same one today! I was just wondering what you ended up doing. No one has answered definitively as to whether or not this is happening on all phones. If an exchange will fix it, I would gladly go tomorrow. I know most phones are having trouble with the 3g/4g handoff but that is not the same issue we are having. What do you think!?
Mike
Same problems I've experienced. I'm on my second gnex, same issues.
Also I pulled speed tests next to other Verizon 4g phones (razor, rezound,TB) they all had significantly higher speeds than mine . I did multiple tests around our site, they had at least twice the speed as mine.
The razr pulled three times my speed most the time. 30+mb/s vs 10
The thunderbolt was around twice as fast downloads but uploads were even.
And the rezound was double on both uploads and downloads
I used the speed test app and speakeasy online.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Another comparison I did was turning on airplane mode on and off on all phones simultaneously. And switching 3g only on/off. To see which phones would latch on to 4g first.
Again the gnex was the slowest.
I really wish we received an update to fix this I love this phone!

I posted this earlier on another thread hoping it will get more views here.
So, I'm having the same exact problems but i did a log cat to see what might be culprit.
I have narrowed it down to this:
02-08 11:21:51.912 E/IMSFW (415): IIL: Disconnected from '7467' socket
still have no idea what can cause it yet.
also if you switch to 3g it seems it doesn't happen so maybe its a sim problem on verizons lte network end?
11:22:40.029 E/IMSFW (415): ImsSMSInterface: Registration failed, go for retrying if isim nounce present
that's what i found so if anyone can clarify and maybe see if it is really on Verizons end as this is the 4th phone that has had this problem
I will be going to verizon tomorrow to "try" and get a new 4g sim card and see if that helps somewhat.

I just went to the store and swapped out my 4g sim card... I dropped two calls on the way home from the store so I'm not sure it helped at all. Hopefully it didn't make it worse though!
I also checked my speeds and service against some other phones in the store and the Droid Razr destroyed my nexus and some other stock nexus that were there usually 12mpbs vs my 8 and 1mbps upload vs their 3.
Well I got my issues fixed today I was on tech support for an hour and he suggested to go to a store and get the sim card replaced. And that solved all my issues
Another problem I had was when using the headset for calling the person on the other line would here themselves. This has also gone away, I am so relieved I love this phone and did not want to abandone it.
Well, I did a bit of a test.
I kept my phone on 3g the whole day: Signal did not drop even for a single MOMENT in the entire day. Sure, there are times where it was bad, but my connection never entirely dropped. This leads me to believe that the problem lies with transitioning between 3g and 4g, or perhaps is just entirely related to 4g.
With the LTE network, I will have anywhere between 3% - 50% time with "no signal." It's extremely annoying and I'll always watch as my battery tanks extremely fast.
Maybe it's worth replacing the SIM card or at least, pulling it and putting it back in. Posting this here for others that are troubleshooting this same problem. I'll report back.

4th nexus same issue

As of now I'm on my 4th Gnexus and once again I'm being plagued with the same issue I have since my first one back on launch day. Loss of voice during a call, high pitch noises, (think scratching on a chalk board) loss of sound on all key press as well as numbers when dialing.
I have called about this issue. First time around Verizon said take it back get a new one. So I did that and so on happened 2 more times same issue same results. Now on my 4th one its starting again. So verizon said it was Samsung and Samsung said Verizon.
So I was hoping for some input on what direction I should go now.

After so many replacements, I can only imagine that this is happening because of your location?

My wife has the same phone and she has not had any of these issues. On the other had she doesn't use her phone as much as I do! I'm pretty much on mine all day and she maybe looks at it once a day.

This is an obvious case of user-error. The odds of getting a defunct phone that many times in a row is about like winning the lottery, literally.

when you said high pitch noises, do you mean that during a call you can hear a buzzing sort of noise when people speak? I get that on my nexus too, it's slightly irritating but I'll live with it, better than spending time to unroot it, go back to stock and then waste a whole week in the service centre.

It's obviously not user error.. If you read a bit you'd see there is a very lengthy thread about this very issue.. It's called microphone cutting out during call or something like that.. You can replace your phone as much as you want, it's not going to change it. the cause is unknown but I believe they have at least determined it not to be hardware..

That is correct. Audio outbound gets garbled and then lost completely. This is the worst bug of this phone. I can't count how many phone calls where I'd have to hang up and redial because the other person couldn't hear me anymore.

I'd blame the carrier, as i'm on Orange UK, and I use T-Mobile UK as well, and call quality both ends, is excellent
Your wife may not have the issue but are y'all talking on the same tower when the issue arises? I'm on Verizon as well and never had this problem. That said, I don't talk a lot, maybe 400 minutes a month - mostly to my boss that has an iPhone so half the time I can't hear crap anyway due to that fact.
I will say, as a recent T-Mobile transplant that has used Verizon off and on for several years with work phones, Verizon doesn't seem to have the same call quality in general terms. Maybe it's just my ear, but even back in the day I owned some Motorola claim shells that sounded pretty muddy.
Have you tried to replicate the problem on a completely stock phone with no 3rd party apps? I wonder if there's a conflict somewhere.

I pretty much tried everything. New sim cards, using it with nothing installed (stock) I'm super bummed I been waiting on a nexus device to hit Verizon for a while now. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to put up with this.
What about rolling back onto 3G? Are you on the fringe of LTE connectivity at all?
I know a lot of people talk about call quality. Frankly, I haven't experienced any issues and no one has told me that it sounds like crap (and believe me, I have friends that would mention it, we're a HARSH bunch). I don't doubt they exist, and you certainly don't sound like 3/4ths of XDA that are overly dramatic whiners. Out of curiosity, roughly how many minutes a month do you talk? Any chance that it's just an issue where, well you know, the more you do something the more opportunity to experience something that goes wrong? I used to talk a ton for work, like 3000+ minutes a month. I had a lot more dropped calls then than now, know what I mean?
You know what I'd do, which Verizon would HATE but, hey, you are the customer. I'd take you and your wife's phone into Verizon, and have them flip the numbers around. Keep EVERYTHING else about the phones the same. Her apps stay, your apps stay, just swap the numbers around and try her phone with your regular use for maybe 3 or 4 days. If you can replicate the problem while she doesn't experience the issue at all on your phone, then you can probably narrow it down to either the tower your on, or maybe the phone really is just buggy after you've been on it for a while.
Every so often I'll have a long conversation and a call gets dropped, but I've never not been able to hear someone or them not be able to hear me. Like, they're the typical issues that you could assign to either being a tower pass off problem or the nature of LTE long before the phone (on either my end or the other person's end). But, like I said, that's a rare occurrence for me.
What version of ICS are you running? I had this same problem, specifically and most frequently the one where the audio cuts out of a call, sometimes it'd do it and force me to re-call my girlfriend as many as 3 or 4 times in an hour.
What fixed it was flashing ICS 4.0.4 released from Google themselves (if I waited for Verizon to do it I'd probably be single by now). This fixed it for me immediately right out of the gate. I've had the other issues you spoke of every so often but the audio cut out was constant. This fixed everything. Been running for a while without problems (month or so maybe?).
Eh...you didn't flash it straight from Google. At best, you flashed it straight from the Verizon/Google ota server the test ota is on
I stand corrected, this is what I get when trying to post while on hold at work. Not straight from Google, leaked 4.0.4. Originally found it elsewhere linked to a google domain site, but it's best served up here.

Sounds like the phone is doing you a favor. If I had to talk to my girlfriend for an hour a day I'd want my phone to kill itself.

Did not fix the microphone going out issue for me :-( I just flashed the 4.0.4 leak on Tuesday hoping it would alleviate this problem, but I had the mic go out about 15 mins into a call last night. Same story as with stock, had to hang up and re-dial to continue the conversation.

Issues with February delivered Pixel XLs

For those who received their XLs in February after the delay (who ordered in November/December), have you been experiencing issues? I had trouble activating the phone and ever since, my cellular connection has been spotty. Even when it says its connected, texts and calls sometimes fail to go through or drop. Despite the reviews, I have experienced some lag and freezes. And my battery life definitely does not last a day (I have to charge it twice a day for moderate to light use with 2 hours screen on time). I wonder if this is common with the new batch of XLs that were shipped out or if, I hope, I just received a faulty device.
Try flashing the new Feb factory image, it will wipe all data and be a complete factory reset. Try that it will most likely fix any issue or issues.
I'm completely stock (locked and unrooted) and have done a couple factory resets. I'm on the latest build. Would it still help? If so, how do I do it?

Go to the link below and follow googles instructions. Pick the feb image that is in the Marlin section and listed for Verizon and most others, unless your on rogers which the other is supposed to be for rogers which is in Canada.

Is you're phone from vzw or directly from Google.

Oh sorry about that I looked past the part where you listed your stock and locked. Since your all factory I would call verizon and let them troubleshoot it, or if you bought through the google play store contact google cs about it, because you cant flash factory images with a locked bootloader.
Thanks for the replies! I bought it directly through Verizon and they will be sending out a replacement (in a couple weeks tho :/). I'm just wondering if anyone else with a February-delivered XL has been dealing with these issues.

No problem here. Got mine last week.
Picked up mine from a corporate Verizon store a week ago and my cell connection is garbage. No service 30% of the time for no reason. Not to mention, the wifi calling keeps disabling itself. I going to try a factory wipe and reflash a Google image to see if that helps.

Are you running a custom rom or stock ? Honestly I get better signal and performance running the rom Pure Nexus and the Elemental x kernel. If your on stock I would recommend giving Pure Nexus a try and Elemental x also.
I got my pixel xl at the beginning of feb, thru verizon, so far no problems. The pixel xl definitely doesnt get the same reception as my g3 did/does. All i can say is thank god im not having any issues with wifi calling, cuz i now get zero bars at my home. Purenexus is pretty nice, but i saw no gain in reception using it but ymmv. The only other thing is with substratum on PN, regardless which theme i choose they all set the color of links in irc for android to the same color as the background.

Guess what? Verizon shipped a regular Pixel instead of an XL! Verizon has been messing up and misleading at every freaking point. This is unacceptable on so many levels. And they charged me for it!
And they no doubt will make it right. Ffs anybody or company if you prefer, can make mistakes, nobodies perfect. But, because verizon is everyones favorite whipping boy any and all oopses are just dogpiled onto. Give just a tiny bit of room for human error, believe me, they undoubtedly will do something else before long to incur everyones anger.

Of course, I understand this is a mistake and human error is normal. But, it can be frustrating for someone after ordering a phone, it taking two months to be delivered with constantly being told different dates and information each time they contact Verizon, being promised a fee being waived by one rep but then being told otherwise by another, and then again being promised it but it not being applied after multiple calls. Then, the same thing occurs with a Daydream View. Then, when the phone finally arrives, it has cellular and battery issues. Then, when a replacement phone is promised, it turns out the be the wrong one. And this is just a summary. I had to speak with Verizon multiple times for different things and the customer service to address these issues was not so great.
To update on this situation, they now tell me I need to wait for this phone to arrive and activate it, in order to return it for a refund and receive the correct replacement without charge. So I still have to wait another couple weeks to enjoy a usable Pixel XL :/
I feel your pain, ordered mine dec 15th, i also kept getting diff shipping dates, was literally on the phone cancelling my order when the shipped e-mail arrived. I didnt have a clue about the vr headset until fedex dropped it off on monday cuz i had not returned their call that previous fri.
I can understand your frustration, and tbh, had forgotten the litany of mishaps you had already gone thru, i just see and read so many gripe fests against them, and most of them are from people that are mad about the locked bootloader and they then blame them for world climate change, dropping birthrates, famine, pestilence and hillary losing. Allbeit, that last one i for one would praise them for, if it were their doing.
Anyhoo, dealing with most any corporation can and often is a PITA, but ill say this, after six years, verizon has not once failed to make it right by me. The wait has rarely been very long, but it has happened.
Hope they fix it for you sooner rather then later.

I got a QB and a VS Pixel XL in February. No problems at all. I live in a rural area and both my wife and I had Samsung GS4 phones before these. I actually get a little better reception I believe.
The only problem I've run into is Trusted Voice doing its auto-disable thing, but I applied the workaround and haven't had any problems since.
My battery life is really good. I play Pokemon Go with my kids and use my phone as a hot-spot, and I can still get through a full day. Though, if I'm around a charger when the phone hits 50% I just charge it anyway.

That's good to hear! It means I just received a faulty device and the replacement should work fine. I was worried that the new batch may have all come out like this since perhaps Google rushed their production by reducing time for quality checks or something like that.
I still haven't received a replacement :/ Verizon keeps sending a regular Pixel by accident.
Anyways, from the many conversations I've had with them, they eventually admitted that the February XL's have had multiple reports of issues with activation, like mine did.
Did anyone else have activation and cellular issues? If so, how are your phones doing now?
