Hi,
I have bought a second hand HTC desire and i would like to install a ROM.
After reading this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293989&page=16
And this list of roms
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
and 4-5 roms specs i am not sure which ROM to use.
I would like something that ensure estability, no lag, no FC and the best battery life.
I do not really care if it is pretty or not.
I have been reading also that increase the internal memory with the SD card is important, but i am not sure how much.
Which one do you recommend?
Thank you for your help.
My advice to you, is to flash a few ROMs and see which you personally like. Generally speaking, you can see from the amount of posts & page views a thread has as to how popular the ROM is, and obviously a popular ROM is popular for a reason.
There are a lot of different ROMs, AOSP, Sense 3.0, Sense 3.5 and now even ICS ROMs. Decide which you like the look of best and give them a trail run. There are no best and worst ROMs, some seem to work fine on one device and can be troublesome on another, it's the nature of the beast. Flash a few and see which is most comfortable for you.
I have been a user of MIUI-XJ for quite some time now. One gig is usually the recommended partition size for an SD card for any ROM, be it AOSP or Sense. I've used MIUI on a daily basis for a good 8 months or more now and it suits me down to the ground.
You are right, the problem is that the Desire is not mine, it is my girlfriendĀ“s.
So, i need to choose one and pray that she likes it.
I think i am going to Revolution 3.0. Looks like is something will do what i need.
Another thing, i have seen that there is Data++ and A2SD+
Which one is better?
I have an 8Gb SD card, but it is class 2. Not sure if i will need a better one.
Thanks for your help
I use data ++, it will just dump all apps onto an EXT Partition you'll never need to worry about space, or moving apps etc.
Swyped from my HTC Desire using xda premium
As for the card, I use a class six 8gb, class two might not be ideal, but then again, my wife can't tell the difference between a class two and a class ten, so it might not matter so much!
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Well, the card will be this one, thats for sure.
Now to find one ROM and to choose between Data++ and A2SD+.
Thanks!
Happy flashing. ^^

IMHO the best ROM for Desire is Revolution 3.0. Read my signature for more details...

Thanks. I will try that one.
Data++ or A2SD+?
I am just looooving the new Aurora, version 5. It's a biiit laggy sometimes, but it is a gooood ROM overall.
I used LeeDroid before, hated it every minute of my life.
hi, i tried the three rom "classic", cyanogen, miui and sense.... for lag cyanogen is the best, but for battery life i prefer miui for sense i test this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961 in this moment XD

Sorry, i didnĀ“t know there was a forum for that.
Thanks for moving it.
Oxygen rom by adamG.
yep, oxygen is best for stability, battery and everything just works. It looks simple but a 3rd party launcher can soon sort that out. A2sd is built in and you can download a dalvik cache to SD zip to flash to gain more internal space.
With this zip flashed and cm7r2 hboot i have around 25 apps installed and around 250mb free space. You'll need an ext3 or ext4 partition on your SD card before flashing.
Miui is nice but you'll get lags after a few weeks that piss you off. Oxygen all the way.
Sent from my HTC Desire, using Tapatalk
I can highly recommend rootSU's dGB with ManU-Kernel (1.4). Never had better smoothness and battery life.
Sent from dGB with Transparent XDA App
I'm using latest CM7 nightly 262 version over one month and it stable as it is original ROM. Lag can happen but it's only when some other app is causing the problem. Sometimes some apps just don't die and chew up CPU and that's when lag can happen. So I recommend "OS monitor" app that monitor your phone and evil apps. It's like "top" program on linux/unix. So if there's no evil apps there is no lag. For battery to go far as it could, you should *always* have mobile data switched off. If I don't use mobile data, just calls and some music. It can run for 48 hours without recharge.
+1 Oxygen rom. or if you want a bit of colour for it Mildwild.
Quite liking Alex v's mod of the pvteam runnydroid Rom. Nice battery life for a sense 3.5 Rom and fast (very) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427706
try MildWild....it's plain simple but the speed rocks.
no need to flash any other stuffs aside from the ROM itself....unless of course you would want further customization...
Do not forget to partition your SD up to Ext4....I'm not sure if there's be an issue with a Class2 SD but if ever, just buy at least Class 4 or 6.

So i probably flash a new ROM maybe every second day at the latest lol, my wife reckons i should just make my office a new bedroom for my and my phone lol. ive tried about all of them i think, except the MIUI versions, tried one, didnt like it at all.
Out of pretty much all of them in the "Desire Index" i think i like Oxygen and ReflexTSense 1.8 the best i've flashed between them both many times...
At one point i had 7 ROM's backed up in clockwork ready to go just incase i had a panic attack (not really) and had to flash another ROM while in the drive through at burger king hahaha.
Any ideas what i can do next? ive tried building one and i got as far as using the kitchen in Ubuntu and a bit of Eclipse but i gave up after not being able to open the android .XML files lol.
SO... what can i flash thats not in the list or who can give me some more ideas about building or creating a theme?
I have flashed about 10 times in the last 2 weeks
currently using leedriod 2.3d and so far this is the one that spends the most time on my phone
Yea i definitely like LeeDroid 2.3d also, very reliable. the only reason i like ReflexTSense over LeeDroid is the HD Rom has a slightly better stock email app, the small fonts are kinda cool i think, and a just a few extra other little things i like about HD roms
I am addicted to SENSE ROMS, right now i am using AuraxTSense and quite happy with it until i find some thing that catches my interest. What would you recommend i try as a SENSE HD ROM.
I have the DESIRE.

I would recomend either ReflexTSense Or iNsertCoin 2.0.1 For iNsert you need to partition your card using the FAT,1GB EXT4, 300MB EXT4 and 100MB EXT4. so if thats a bit tricky stick with Reflex
I would lean towards Reflex, seems a tiny bit faster and you dont have to partition (apart from the standard FAT then EXT3 which you can do through ROM Manager) and i still have tones of apps installed and still have 127mb internal left
There are other good ones but ive tried about 9 or 10 of them and these 2 are the best IMO
I'm using a MIUI rom just for the folders.
the same to me, I have flashed 6 times between redux, amethyst and oxygen in last two week, finally, I stay on the redux.
Well...Now, I am using InsertCoin 2.0.1 Datas2Ext.
I flashed my Desire only during the search for a ROM that is suitable to my taste and needs.
I have flashed LeeDroids, RCmixHD, RCs Z, and DeFrost before I tried BaadNewz 1.3.
I have also tried one of the MIUIs and I don't like it...it is a bit too..iPhone-ish.
After flashing BaadNewz ROM (now InsertCoin), I know I have found what I have been searching for and decided to stick with the ROM.
So..it is not really an addiction for me.

Definitely has awesome battery life I was having a few issues with wifi on 2.0.2. Giving the latest redux a try tonight seems good so far. But I really like 2.0.1 oxygen. Really well put together ROM and quick as.
Tones of room after flashing the delvik 2sd script also

I'm a bit of a crackhead-level ROM addict, I tried using RCmixHD DeSenseized 3.5 A2SD+ and then realized that i could not make or recieve phone calls, and so flashed mini-sense only to find that the recommended A2SD+ script doesn't work at all, reverted back to a CM7 RC3 backup to then go to ReflexTsense 8.4 which i decided is the ROM for me(for now at least)....all in one night!!
P.s: is EXT3 better than EXT4 at handling most A2SD+ ROMs? (specifically DHD roms)
EDIT: Just wanna give a shoutout to Rerware's MyBackup Root for being so fast at restoring apps!
Haven't flashed a new ROM in weeks, found Redux 1.1.0 and I've been more than happy, first Gbread rom I've had that's been fault-free so far.
And trackball wake <3

ext4 shorten card life? why is that?
i used leedroid for awhile but the dsp manager on the mini site doesnt work proeprly for me. it crackles and pops if i even turn on the equaslizer. so i went to cool hd which is by far in my eyes, the best most stable hd rom out there. used it for afew weeks. never had a reboot or fc. just recently changed to cyanogen rc3 to give er a try. the thing u gotta do is find the rom that suits you. gingersense suits me but until shes done, cyanogen rc4 and cool sense hd is where il stay

Im a noob so dont take my word on it, but I've heard flash memory becomes slower over time the more you write on it. EXT4 has a feature called journaling that I guess should be relatively similar to indexing service on windows. It will improve performance at the cost of writing data more often, hence the shorter life expectancy.
Now lets see if a real geek feels like showing us some light on this matter so I can eat my words.
I've searched for an answer or comparison on the internet, but I can't seem to find one.
The long-ish story
Yesterday I took my first leap into the ROM world by installing Cyanogen 7.03. It rocked and I loved it. However, as with the main problems of the Wildfire, the space got to me. I wanted the ability to move all my apps to the SD, as I was able to do using Ruymanca 7.1 and the a2sd cachesd u command. Now I'm on Ruymanca with a mere 30MB of internal space being used, and 70 apps in. However, I don't know anything about Ruymanca. I do know more about Cyanogen. Cyanogen is the name, in my opinion, for famous/well used ROMs. I never heard of Ruymanca, but I like the SD Card use.
Has Cyanogen 7.03 got the same ability to push all my apps and system, basically, to the SD using the above command? I know they are both very similar, but instead of moving to CM7 again and losing my SD ability, can I do it?
Finally, are CM's more common and frequent than Ruymanca ROMs? Which should I be on? I want SPEED and SPACE!
Tl;dr
CM7 vs Ruymanca for speed and A2SD (# a2sd cachesd u) - which one? Can they both do it?
In CM7 go to CM settings and Applications.
You can set it there.
I didn't do any of the ext (or w/e) **** and I can move anything to the sd card
Thank you for the reply!
But when I had CM7 installed and that box checked, the internal space dropped majorly. It was half eaten within a couple of apps. Why would this be?
Well, I've got no problem.
Try using Apps2sd app to move them and to see which occupy a lot of space.
That's great.
How many apps are you on? How much (internal) space are you on now?
I've got about 50 apps and 90 mb of free memory.
(if you put widgets on the sd card, you can't place them on the desktop tho)
99 applications, 175MB total space/131MB free. Good or bad?
(Four apps are on the phone: SetCPU, Memory Killer, a widget and one other)
Do you think I should return to Cyanogen then? Is there anything that Cyanogen has that others (Ruymanca) don't have? And, are the updates more frequent/stable?
As said, it's all about speed and space for me.
That's great.

Sense based roms = roms with htc sense = similar to stock roms.
And htc sense is a user interface with htc widgets. But it has fewer customization options than custom UIs.

They've got the same base, it would appear. All using Cyanongen base. Seems to be the same type to be honest, but Ruymanca has LauncherPro vs. ADW in CM7.
Major difference seems to be the heavily stripped rom and the A2SD.
I've put CM7 back on now, and tried S2E to give it a go, and benchmark/compare overclocking. It seems slightly slower, and I'm on 710, as 761 is apparently a bit hit and miss.

Try Redux 2
You could try Tamirda's Revolution rom (sense 2.1+3.0) fast and very stable. Or maybe you want some AOSP lovin you could try MildWild oxygen based ICS themed rom. Both are awesome
The most stable, fastest 2.3 rom i've use on MY desire is GingerVillian 3.3. I know its abit old now, but I've tried the latest CM7 nightly build (262 - no more have been made in a while) both with and without custom kernels, with n without a2sd / data2sd (tried a2sdx but caused FCs from what i could tell) I have also tried ALL the sense ROMs and they just do not compare, MIUI is ALMOST as fast but not quite....
The fastest/best setup imho is as follows:
-CM7r2 hboot
-GV 3.3 (maybe remove a few apps from system as they r out of date - like youtube)
-do not use dalvik to sd, slows it down... imho
-class 6(+) sdcard with 512(mine is actually 1024) sdext (ext4) using ext4 recovery
-use villian setup to install 3.1 wifi pm_fast module
I have tried many different ways of setting up my phone with several ext partitions, or just one large one... and after a week or two of useage, im ALWAYS finding that its just NOT as fast as GV. however the sense 3.5 roms are most defiantly more beautiful! but just NOT AS FAST. I have 350+ app elements according to titianium backup pro. and it STILL doesnt slow down. I mean it boots in less than 30secs everytime!
I do personally use Go launcher EX (system perm n removed other launcher) and the Go widgets and GoSMS Pro (mms.apk still in system), however, if you have ALL the effects on go launcher enabled, you can see the difference, i suggest just picking one you like, and sticking with it, just dont use random.... however at the end of the day, the use of the Go for Android apps, does effect performance SLIGHTLY, however between that and the tmobile theme engine, I can make my phone look how i want, and still have it faster than any other rom ive tried...
thats it! its PERFECT!

I agree the Facebook / Twitter intergration is awesome in Sense, if i could get the Sense contacts n dialler on aosp, I'd deffo do that! but I got round this problem by exporting my FB m8s via a CSV card and then imported into google contacts... Then using syncmypix I have everyone setup correctly. Effort I know but it works! If you do this, the FB app syncs / links nicely.
I have never suggested using an alternative launcher on sense (with the exception of if you dont have root and i dont think the user is smart enough to root it safely) as while it does give more free RAM, you miss the best parts of sense; THE WIDGETS!
The Sense framework will ALWAYS be running in the background taking up some RAM, so you might as well use it... imho anyways...
I really like the runnymede AIO V4.0 Special edition! If you want something smooth and different, try that one
I have been on synergy RC1 for more than a year. I am sick of not having enough space to install apps on my phone. I am hoping to find a rom that doesn't take up so much of the available space on the evo 4g. I like sense but not married to it. I thought there was more ICS roms out there But I guess not. Any suggestions?
MikG is a very similar rom to Synergy, yet uses a lot less space. Try it out.
I saw that rom and was thinking on it thanks for the suggestion
You can also run with NITROUS Rom which so far is living up to the heights, very stable and reliable Rom
aosp roms are very light in size. a2sd also helps to move the bulk of your apps to a partitioned sd.

if your not ties to sense try CIUI... i just switched to it from ENERGY 3.5 sense rom. I loved energy, but wanted to experiment. CIUI is a mix between CM and MIUI... it will neeed some mods to make it better... i use Go launcher for the launcher/app drawer. it is a very light rom and doesnt use much space. If you are that worried about storage space for apps, why not partition your sd card, flash dark tremors a2sd? this will install all the apps to an ext partition upon download form the market. you can also download terminal and enter the following commands:
su[ENTER]
a2sd reinstall[ENTER]
cachesd[ENTER]
this will move all your apps already installed and your cache to the sd card. here are the links.

Hello everybody, I have been a long time user of android phones and have had a HTC Desire S for the last one year. My younger sister has a Wildfire S, and after 8 months, she has finally agreed to allow me to S-off it as she is plagued with low memory and inability yo install more apps.
Being a part of the XDA community for quite sometime now, I have realised that no matter how much you know about android in general, specific advice should always be taken from members using the device in questions. Because there are issues only they are aware of. As an outsider, I can only request you to kindly give me your opinions on which ROM I should flash once I have S-offed it...
My only requirements are that it should be a sense 3.x ROM with plenty of memory - eg link2sd or something like that. To be honest, I dont know much about the latter, because having 1 GB of internal memory on my DS, I've never attempted to use it. But my lil sister would appreciate it if you guys could guide me in the right direction.
I really hope you can help me out on this one. Thank you.
Do pardon me if I'm asking an oft repeated question, and sorry for intruding into your forum.

Flash Thing for 2.1 or EQDKP for 3.5
EQDKP for 3.5. I feel this is the best right now. I tried .sense also but it has a few bugs right now which, I really can't live it. It maybe minor 'bugs' but I don't like it. EQDKP is nice. Would wait for .sense to give out the final build and then flash it
Thank you everyone for the replies. Waited a lot for some opinions yesterday, but when none came, i read thru the forum and decided to go for this one :
[ROM]m1ndh4x8r GB2.3.5|OCKernel|Stable|Apps2SD|DATA2SD|Premium Features[2/29/2012]
I must say, so far so good. No real issues with the ROM. Except that i had two system freezes requiring battery pull. Maybe these were related to the phone not being able to handle the high clockspeed of 806MHz. Toned that to 245-768 On demand, and has been fine so far. I like the clean, stock feel this ROM has...and since it's based on an official release, i don't expect any real issues. Big thanks to the dev behind it - m1ndh4x8r
I also stuck to the built in A2SD for moving apps and dalvik to sd card, instead of links2sd or data2sd because i wanted to set up a selfsustaining phone where the user wouldn't have to bother about linking apps and stuff- just point and shoot!
Although since so many of you recommend .sense and EQDKP for 3.5, maybe i'll give those a try and see how it goes. Now that she's rooted, can't be long before she starts craving for something new, eh?
Ring a bell, anyone ?
In Link2SD, once it has been set up, you can put it on Auto-Link so that all new apps installed directly get linked to SD without you doing any work

That's an old version you're using.
This is a new one, with Sense 3.5

It's deodexed, which means you'll have ~30-40mb free when you flash it, but just follown the instructions for how to re-odex deodexed ROM, and you'll have ~110mb free. Then you can use Link2SD.

They are much more bug proof.

It's also based on an official ROM so nothing undpredictible should happen. When its dev launched kernel v2 I was totally convinced.
