Wifi performance - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm still on 4.0.1 and just wondered if anyone has seen any improvements on wifi with 4.0.2 or newer?
As of now i get a ping of around 10ms, 28Mb/s down and 20Mb/s up on my laptop.
On the Gnex i get response time of 40-200ms, 5-8Mb/s down and 1-1.5Mb/s up.

wow, that's terrible. have you tried it with different routers?
i didn't test my wifi performance on 4.0.1, but on 4.0.3 i'm getting 31ms, 13319kpbs down and 6899kpbs up.
one glitch i've noticed is that when i turn wifi on, or i come in range of a known wifi network with wifi on, it sometimes takes a while for the wifi to connect.

Sadly I don't have any other router to test on. I have internet through a VPN-connection and have setup a stationary computer with a wifi card as an access point so I can connect devices without the VPN-logon and such (PS3 does not support it etc.)
I ran some more tests now (speedtest.net) and now I was pretty stable at around 29-49ms, but, this is kinda strange, all test runs and servers got me ~1Mb/s down and 15-16Mb/s up. The laptop on the other hand got 56Mb/s down and 30Mb/s up.

I think I found the problem and solution.
I looked under the advanced settings in wifi and came over the "avoid bad connections" (or what it's called in english), unchecked that and the result, surprisingly, was quite different.
Any idea why this would cause this problem?

I can't find this option on my phone ?

It appears to be gone in 4.0.2. Previously, it did make quite a difference to uncheck it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

dam all hope is lost lol. Maybe they will fix it with 4.0.3.
The problem is you tube videos don't load fast enough on my nexus however on my gs2 and iPhone 4 it was instant.
Not a deal breaker but annoying ,

A phone will generally have less signal compared to a laptop because of power ability.
I also think the nexus has a weak wifi antenna compared to my transformer and my old G2x.
Download and use WiFi Analyzer to check signal and -db levels between devices. Just like the cellular signal deboggle, bars don't mean squat.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus CM9
Asus Transformer Revolver

wow thats terrible! i just got my GNex saturday and it's running 4.0.2 and my wifi at home is awesome between 35-45mb download and around 15ish upload. did you ever get the 4.0.2 update message yet?

No 4.0.2 here in Norway yet. Hopefully they'll just skip the .2 and push out .3 soon.
Anyhow, looks like unchecking the 'avoid bad connections' box helped, just tested now and the speed is great

I'm on 4.0.2 GSM Google build and the wifi is still sloppy com paired to my gs2. So no the update don't fix it, and there is home screen lag now, I use a static wall paper.

Wifi constantly scanning?

It seems like the wifi is constantly scanning even when connected to a network. Wouldn't this be big drain on the battery and is there any way to stop it?

It must be that it is only constantly scanning when on that settings page, because it isn't a big drain on battery.
I notice it is also scanning for wifi even though im completly connected, but im still getting great battery use out of it.

I posted this same issue to the Sprint forum and a tech responded that he will add it to the bug list for the next MR as he could see it too. Not sure if is scanning when not on the settings page, but at any rate, it seems like it should stop scanning if it has a hold of a network.
How do you check for this? May be relevant in my case...
Note, i posted this in the battery life thread - suspecting a wifi issue of some sort:

I had to plug it in around 8:30 as you can see.
My wifi was on all day and connected, since I didn't leave the house.
I've changed the wifi sleep setting today, so we'll see if that makes a change.
The only other thing I changed yesterday was from the stock wind weather live wallpaper to a koi Pond live wallpaper, good reviews and no mention of battery issues that I saw).
I'm suspecting the wifi but interested to hear any "eureka" discoveries.
Other days, i'm at work fairly long hours and had wifi off most of the day at least, and thought my battery life has been good... Still 50% or 60% left at 8 or 9 pm.

Edit:
Note how the precipitous battery drop corresponds to when wifi was turned on in the morning.
I can't believe this would be simply coincidental.
I have that issue to, but great battery life. My biggest concern is horrible 3g speeds. My wifes evo does not have this issue.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII EPIC 4g Touch on XDA Premium!
I noticed the same problem. I swear it also increases my Android OS usage. I get about 12 hours of battery life with 2 days of sample size.

Very slow speeds

Can anyone help me figure out why my download and mainly upload speeds are so slow? I'm approximately 1/4 mile from the tower and it is line of sight without any obstructions. Radios are the leaked 4.0.4 radios and speeds were basically the exact same with 4.0.2 radios. Nothing else was running and the server is about 30 miles from here. Also, I had full bars for 3g and two bars for 4G when I tested.
Top four results are 4G and second four are 3G.

I am guessing only a Verizon tech who can look at the tower can help you there. Anything else will just be a guess.
Mine is pretty bad too around the same as yours during peak hours...I think its due to over saturation at work...in the morning I get around 600 kbps...

Oops forgot this one
here is mine.
Oversaturation? VZW has so many data hungry grandfathered customers on LTE - that plus their aggressive marketing = lots of people using once-50MBps LTE now slowing it to HSDPA+ speeds?
We must work at the same place then. I don't really notice a slow down after most people leave but I'll run a speed test tomorrow evening to see if there is a difference. Btw today around 1030 I got around 30 down and 30 up, kbps.
Here is a screenshot from then.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Still crappy speeds even with less than 3/4 of the work force here today. So I'm thinking its something other than way too many people hitting the same tower.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Network saturation is a *****. Head over to the throttle thread and listen to all the people there tell you how all the heavy data users have no impact on you. The good thing is at least Verizon is proactive about their network and will likely add capacity soon. I'd certainly consider complaining a bit to them though so they know its a problem.

[Q] Wifi Issues

So i've been experiencing some really slow wifi speeds. On both my Galaxy Nexus's so i know its not just my phone. They are on different ROMs. I have a router that goes to my main router in my work room. And the Router i connect to is in the living room to compensate for the low wifi signal on ICS. I will stand right next to it and run a speedtest but can only achieve 6-15 mbps depending on what server i use. However the one in the work room will do the normal 30mpbs that i expect. My laptop will do the 30mbps on the router in the living room as well as my epic 4g... so im positive it is an issue with the Nexus... but what issue? Does it not like the router? It cant be the wifi radio... because the wifi is just fine on the other router. Any ideas as to what can be done? Or am going to have to go out and buy me a new router? Or would a signal booster be better?
did I stump everyone?

Well...as you like to put it so many times....READ. There are documented issues with wifi on the GNex. All sorts of things from low signal, to data connection, poor voltage handling and so on. I suppose you could choose any reason you like for what is wrong with your phone. Maybe you just got a bad phone. One thing i did see on a google search, (did you?), that led me back to xda was that some people reported changing the wifi signal scanning from "both" to just the freq they were using showed some improvement...YMMV
Good Luck
Thanks for the condescension.

I agree, some people are real dicks on here. If you don't have anything constructive to say or you aren't an admin, then don't say anything.
So what all have you learned about this issue? I have been experiencing this myself but just though it was something I had done.

Nothing thus far, ive reset my router multiple times, i have tried different security settings. And nothing has helped thus far. I may try reflashing the firmware for the router and see if that helps any, if not the only thing i can think of is the fact that the phone doesnt like the two year old router and needs to be replaced.
I think GN wifi issues are mostly linked to the specific router or AP. 30mb sounds pretty darn good. I would probably purchase another one of those. Buy it from somewhere with a good return policy . Just curious what type of router is the one that gets the 30? I only get 18-20 but its pretty consistent.

I have. 30mb line so thats a what I would expect. The main router is. Ubee, I have timewarner so its a internet router as well as a telephone provider. However I think something is wrong with it. Although speeds are fine. Connectivity is off and it will constantly come in and out, I'm also unable to change its settings it has options for 5ghz and 40mhz but every time I try to set it to that it reverts. If I had those options I probably wouldn't need another router.

T-Mobile - horrible reception? (Time without a signal)

I've got the T-Mobile SGS3, and am getting horrible reception.. time without a signal hovers around 30% at home on this phone, where as both my Nexus One and Sensation had no problems whatsoever with signal. Going for WCDMA preferred instead of GSM auto (default out of the box setting) didn't help.. fwiw, I'm getting 3-4 bars of signal on the statusbar.
is anyone else having this issue, or is my phone just a lemon?
Thanks!
bump.. no one else is seeing bad reception?

Im on sprint, and my signal is piss poor also. Take forever to logon to pandora and forget about watching any videos, impossible. I'm thinking the modern needs an update. What's the sense in having this bad ass phone if we can't even listen to internet radio in peace. I'm going back to my SSG2, and getting my HBO back for lunch
I'm still getting 25-30% time without a signal, just sitting at home.. why is the signal strength for the SGS3 so bad?! Is it a Samsung issue? I've only had HTC android phones before this one.

[Q] Reasonable expectation on WiFi

Is it reasonable to expect the Sprint Galaxy Nexus WiFi to perform as well as the HTC EVO 4G LTE WiFi? If not, what should I expect as being a reasonable level of WiFi range?
I have great signal for 3G and no LTE here yet. Not expecting it for some time and no need to question the 3G service. However, WiFi is poor on every ROM I have tried. I have tried 2 different routers at home on both 2.4 and 5Ghz and have found settings that make the connection stronger, but still nothing near the EVO. I have taken the Nexus to the local Starbucks and Panera testing the connection with the same results. Since I have both phones I plan to ride it out for a chance that software will make this better.
I am curious what others are experiencing on WiFi with the Sprint Galaxy Nexus and what routers are working well on what bands.
Thanks.

My speed has actually increased 50x that of my incredible.
It actually goes so fast that my nexus will shut itself down sometimes when downloading stuff.
I'm not sure why I get super speed but its awesome but the risk of shutting down instantly does not sit well.. it didn't boot for 6 minutes one time. But it constantly gives me low signal so I'm not sure why it does this.
