I seem to be having issues changing the boot animation in ics-deck a5. Has anyone else encountered this? I have tried using from toolbox and when that didn't work I tried to swap the file out manually yet it still shows the old animation.
Edit: Figured it out. I was trying to put the bootanimation.zip in the data/local folder which usually works, but it seems that you need to put it in system/media. The small file named bootanimation (no .zip extension) in system/bin was throwing me off for a bit. Hope this helps anyone else trying to change theirs on ics-deck. This really is an amazing rom.

Hope these help. I am sure there are more posted here on XDA and other forums but these are 3 I could think of off the top of my head.
Aosp: rename file to bootanimation.zip and place in system/media
Sense: same rename but place in /system/customize/resource
Reboot
not fixed yet
im having same problem and im looking for some fix in a few days...lol
i think my problem is my firmware...gingerbread 2.3.6, i´ve tried all i guess and i dont get nothing.
past System/media dont have any file with name bootanimation.zip to replace
and when we past some there only 1 bootani... results in my galaxy s i9000.
others just block, with black screen or with animation, but dont pass that.
my phone dont iniciate.
i´m almoust sure u can understand me but...sorry about my bad english.
In the good old day when we had so many gingerbread options, if your rom allowed it you could change boot animation simply put zip into system/media now that we are moving on to ICS that no longer works, I did some searching that a second file needs to be made or placed for it to work, I tried toolbox but most of those although they do work are droid themes or lame. So the question is was anyone able to change the boot animation with a ICS rom, without using toolbox, if so please post how you were able to do it. I love the android pissing on apple boot. Does any one have that anmation by chance most links I found were to megaupload which has been shut down.
Once you find the one you want just place it into system\media make sure its named bootanimation.zip
It works with dark side evolution ics. I know because I made a animation from scratch and I run it in my phone.

The problem with the bootanimation.zip file you were trying to use was that when I unzipped and took a look into the desc.txt file, the second line where it states what folder to run first was not named the same as the folder that contained the images. So when you were telling your phone to look in a certain folder it was never found. In case you run into other problems follow these basic steps.
You need to unzip it and make sure that it is filed in the correct order. When a bootanimation.zip is made it consist of a desc.txt and at least one folder with many or few .png images. The folder that contains the .png images must be named the same in the txt file. In order of course of how you want to see it run. All this is stated in the desc.txt.
And to put it on your phone just copy paste into system/media make sure that you can RW in that directory. Then reboot and your good.
Or an easier way just do adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media from platform tools in your SDK.
XDA upload wasn't working so here ya go!
Ok first off big thanks to cesar, I didnt get his post at first and didnt feel like bothering him any more as he has been much to helpful so in lamemans terms, you need it to be in a zip format when you put it into system/media.....within that zip should be a folder containing you pics and a text file (what ever the folder is called should also be referenced in the text file) I was a little lost when I saw boot and tried several different ways till I got it, and now I understand, also I think within the text file you can set the size of video on the first line. Again big thanks to Cesar.
What about power on sound?

Not sure if this is in the right forum, but I just heard about ROM Toolbox and wanted to try it on my GNex. I installed a new boot animation, but when I rebooted my phone, it doesn't show the installed animation. All it shows is the android text with a light flashing behind it. Any help with this? Was going to buy the paid version once my Nexus 7 arrives, but I guess I'm not sure how to properly set the boot animation.
ROM Toolbox Pro gerfungled my boot animations on both of my phones, Galaxy Nexus and an LG myTouch Q. Just erases the old one and doesn't install a replacement. Also be careful using the font installer, since it's set to overwrite your three main system fonts by default when you install a font. Also, most boot animation changer programs don't work on Samsung phones.
If you like a boot animation that Rom Toolbox shows you, just let it download. Then copy it from /sdcard/romtoolbox/boot_animations to /data/local and rename it "bootanimation.zip". Should work on next boot. Your original gnex boot animation is also in there, named backup(something).zip. You can also extract /system/media/bootanimation.zip from any zipped gnex rom file and do the same.

Worked perfectly that way! I downloaded it and moved it to /system/media, renamed the default boot to "bootanimation.bak". Fixed permissions and rebooted.
As for fonts, I'm not getting into that. I love having access to three apps in one!

I have tried replacing my bootanimation.zip file with other ones DL'd from the internet with no success. Is there a file size limit?

Have you changed the permissions accordingly? It won't work if the zip doesn't have the right permissions (rw-r-r).

Im having some problems changing the sprint boot animation on my e4gt. Using ROM Toolbox, and attempting manually... I have copied the new bootanimation.zip files to the /system/media directory, verified the file is correct and all permissions set but no matter what I try, I cant seem to replace that same sprint splash screen. Where is the default splash screen located? I have a feeling Im looking in the wrong place.
I have also tried the /data/local directory too with no luck. The .gif looks like its 320x480 10FPS.
Im currently searching through all directories for any other files named bootanimation.zip but if anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated.
UPDATE: Found it from Venum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818542&page=3
"Here's your fix. If you are using a stock rom but a kernel that supports boot animation (and you are rooted), using rootexplorer or a similiar app go into system/bin. Find samsungani and rename it to samsungani.bak. Now find bootanimation in system/bin and rename bootanimation to samsungani. Thats it. Now all bootanimations correctly placed in the system/media file and named bootanimation will work upon boot... "
Don't feel bad just learned how to change my boot animations too. Mine is android beating Apple with bat and pissing on it.

Just in time
I was just trying to figure this out when I ran across your thread. Thanks.
Have a nandroid backup just in case something goes wrong, Ive softbricked before many times actually just for trying to change a bootanimation. It can happen.
If you already have been using data/local for install location and its working for you great. I just noticed that i used my steps below but left out changing installation directory, so ive been installing to my data/local and my changes have been taking effect. After installing bootanimations i noticed my location was data/local then i went to change it to system/media and install a animation and nothing changes. So i am using data/local now as my target, im guessing if i were just to delete the boot zip from data/local my system/media bootzip will play only because i have a bootanimation.zip already installed to that directory as well, im not going to try it yet but maybe on a rainy day with downtime on my hands ill try it. But after all said the locations of install are working just fine, in the OP instructions are just one way of setting a valid default installation. Im guessing which ever location you started using first is the location you should continue to use.
Btw im on kuban2.1, stock FI27 , init.d support enabled

you can download xxxxxxxxxxGIF.zip and rename the extension to .gif and then use RomToolBox to Automate the install. You need help just ask ill do my best.
INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
NOTE:"Before using romtoolbox"Open romtoolbox go to bootanimations, press your menu softkey, press install location, change common locatioms value to /system/media/ select ok. Now If you are using a stock rom but a kernel that supports boot animation (and you are rooted), using rootexplorer or a similiar app go into system/bin. Find samsungani and rename it to samsungani.bak. Now find bootanimation in system/bin and rename bootanimation to samsungani. Thats it. After the above has been setup on your device you can now navigate to your gif file in a file explorer app. Once you click the gif file window pops up and use gif to bootanimation, then choose to install..
or
ONLY IF YOU ALREADY COMPLETED THE STEPS ABOVE;
If you already completed the above steps with naming samsungai to samsungani.bak, and bootanimation to samsungani in the /system/bin, and changed location install to /system/media/ then you can download the bootanimation.zip and manually copy paste it into /system/media/ via root explorer or you could even open romtoolbox goto bootanimations then choose local tab then find the bootanimation.zip click it then choose install, then reboot your phone.
Because this site has bugs when uploading i have to name bootanimations over and over again (they get overwritten) so you have to rename the bootanimation after downloading to bootanimation.zip

All I get is a black screen with the original boot sound. I am using AGATS recovery
