There are getting more carriers on the RUU lists in HTCdev.com. I have unlocked my WIldfire. I want to root the phone. So what is the next step ? Help me.... =)
Nobody knows for sure yet but I presume using fastboot to flash cwm recovery then use recovery to flash a rom.

After you are s-off, just use gingerbreak v1.2. It worked for me

Ok download rom manager from the market. Open it and flash the latest version of clockworkmod recovery. Then download this zip http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-bin-3.0.3.2-d-signed.zip . Then boot into bootloader and select recovery. Then perform a nandroid backup (just incase) then select install zip, then choose zip. Then scroll to the downloaded zip and flash it. After this you should be rooted and ready to go. When it succeeds perform another nandroid backup so you have one with root good luck

I have unlocked the hboot by following the procedures in htcdev.com. I go to hboot of my phone, I see the ***Unlocked**** but it is still s-on. So do I need to s-off ? How to s-off ?
No you already have the equivalent to s off. Try using rom manager as heavy metal man said above. Let us know if it worked.

no. that is the equivalent of s-off. root is equal to administrator privileges on your phone.
once you have s-0ff (or bootloader **unlocked** by htcdev) install a custom recovery through rom manager apk so that you can flash custom roms and zip files to your phone. then by flashing the superuser.zip file you will gain root (administrator) permissions and the superuser apk which will allow you to select what apks gain root access and which dont
just use the links in my post above
I installed ROM Manager, Flash the Clockworkmod Recovery, went to bootloader and selected Recovery, all I get is the picture of a phone with an exclamation mark. How ?
the recovery hasnt installed right.
did it say it flashed it correctly in rom manager?
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-buzz.zip
download this and rename it PC49IMG.ZIP (exactly like this) and place it on the root of the sdcard. (not in any folder)boot into the bootloader and the phone shoudl automatically find the file and ask if you want to flash it. say yes (up volume i think) and it should give you clockworkmod recovery
ps make sure its not named PC49IMG.zip.zip
keep us posted
Sorry. I'm new on rooting Android. I am afraid to brick my phone. Can you tell me the procedure again ? ROM Manager > Flash Clockworkmod Recovery > download http://download.clockworkmod.com/rec...0.2.0-buzz.zip and http://downloads.androidsu.com/super...2-d-signed.zip > copy them into the root folder of the SD Card > boot into bootloader > recovery > backup nandroid > flash http://downloads.androidsu.com/super...2-d-signed.zip. Am I right ?
the whole process.
ok the plan is
1. download http://download.clockworkmod.com/rec...0.2.0-buzz.zip
2. rename PC49IMG.ZIP (make sure its not .zip.zip)
3. place PC49IMG.ZIP onto root of sdcard.
4. boot into bootloader and the phone should find the update.
5. let the phone flash the update. (volume up i think)
6. then boot into recovery to make sure its worked.
7. perform a nandroid backup. select nandroid- then backup. (move with the volume buttons and select using the trackball)
8 download http://downloads.androidsu.com/super...2-d-signed.zip
9. place this .zip on the root of the sdcard and boot into recovery.
10. go to install zip from sdcard-choose .zip from sdcard- then select the superuser.zip
11.reboot and check that you have root. (you should see the superuser apk, and theres a app you can download called root checker)
12. (optional) perofrm another nandroid back so you have one with root.
13 enjoy
I opened ROM Manager again, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, it downloaded something, there is a loading bar on top. After it finished loading, it tells me there is an error about "something fail to attempt to do something, something about command....."
I copied the files into the root path of the SD card. I boot into hboot. it loads. I saw a loading bar on upper right corner. The command is Parsing PC49IMG.ZIP. then nothing happens. no confirmation to update or anything. it goes back to the hboot menu: FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE, SIMLOCK. then once I go into Recovery, the same picture of a phone with exclamation mark appears...

I can confirm getting root with gingerbreak 1.2.
After reboot I got superuser and had no problem with rom manager and recovery.
thanksfor help!
Thanks! Gingerbreak 1.2 works! I have SuperUser now. Does it mean I rooted my device ? How to know that I rooted the device ? Just the appearance of super user ?
I used gingerbreak to get SuperUser. I still dun have the clockworkmod recovery. I suppose the Nandroid has been modified. Am I right ?

Successfully rooted my phone yesterday, but was unable to flash Android 2.2. After fastboot checks pc36img it just goes back to fastboot screen. Was there a problem with unrevoked3 or clockworkmod?
If you are trying to flash a rom, you need to do that from recovery. What exactly have you done to your phone so far, which root method did you use?
I used the method for rooting Eco 4g with Android 2.2 I rooted the phone through to Android 2.1 then with unrevoked3 then copied clockworkmod files to the sdcard
But have u actually installed a recovery yet? You have to push a recovery through ADB or use a terminal emulator.

I thought clockworkmod was a recovery when I go into recovery it is a clockworkmod version

Yes but more so the update zip I think the recovery flashed correctly, the guide says to go to hboot and the phone checks for pc36img, but once it does instead of asking me if I want to apply update it just go back to fastboot
If you're already rooted why r u trying to flash a pc36 image?

You don't need to flash PC136.img to get android 2.2. If you're fully rooted with recovery you can flash any ROM that uses Froyo and you'll have 2.2

You don't flash a rom with a pc36img. Download your 2.2 rooted rom and place it on the root directory of your SD card. Also, make sure you delete the pc36img on your card so your phone doesnt keep searching for it later. Turn the phone off. Boot into recovery by holding down volume and power at the same until until the white bootloader screen appears. Select recovery. Then select wipe/factory reset, then select wipe cache. Then select install zip from SD card. Scroll to your rom and select it, confirm yes when it asks, and wait for it to finish flashing. Once it's done it will say install complete. Then select reboot system now. Your done.

I'm starting to get confused here.....
1. Are you sure that you're rooted?
2. Are you sure you have successfully flashed a recovery?
3. Have you copied the .zip of the ROM you want to flash to the root of your SD card and booted in to recovery and tried to flash the .zip?
Sorry for the confusion, but I'm new to this, I'm positive I'm rooted and that I have clockworkmod recovery installed. I copied 2.2 root zip from my desktop to the root of my sdcard along with the pc36img and busybox. All three where part of the download link from the guide

Step 3: After choosing NO to the reboot, you will see a menu again. Select Bootloader from the menu, then use the Volume Down button to hover over "Recovery" and press Power to click on it.
If your phone gets stuck at the White EVO 4G screen, pull your battery, and then power on while holding volume down again. It should boot to the bootloader again, where you can select recovery.
Once you are booted into this custom recovery, go to
It's supposed to go back to your menu (the white menu with the 3 green androids on skateboards) after scanning the PC36.img This is where you boot in to "recovery" Once in recovery, you can flash the 2.2.zip I have to say I've never used Clockwork so I'm not exactly sure if it's all the same menu. I've always used AmonRA
Not sure how i'm tucking it up, but the phone doesn't ask me if I want to reboot or if I want to apply the update what I do know is that if choose recovery and flash 2.2 it says install complete, but when I boot up i'm still in 2.1

You have to flash a custom recovery either clockwork mod or amonra recovery. Then go into recovery and install the superuser.zip. In order to do this you have to be s-off. If you are s-on on 2.3.4 there is no current way to root.
My understanding as well that thre isn't a root for gingerbread.
my Dinc
my phone is currently s-off which is good.
That's good then, all you need to do (like a previous poster said) is flash a custom recovery, then flash the superuser zip in that recovery. The easiest way to do this is using rom manager, it's pretty self explanatory. Alternately, you can flash the recovery of your choice in hboot, www.dougpiston.com has recoveries available for download. Then find the superuser zip and "install from SD card" in recovery.

You mean ... there isn't a root for gingerbread ON for HTC phones. The droids are rooted just fine (my wife has a Droid 2 Global with the OTA installed) through a one click for Windows and Linux (Z4ROOT doesn't work anymore though).

There's root/S-OFF for other HTC phones on gingerbread. Look at the unrevoked/revolutionary site. Evo 3D, incredible 2, sensation, are a few HTC phones on gingerbread that can be S-OFFed.

I'm assuming that it's a zip file that you downloaded? It's most likely meant to be flashed in hboot. Rename the file exactly to PB31IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). To get in to hboot, power the phone off completely, then hold power and volume down. You'll be taken to the hboot screen and it will automatically look for the PB31IMG.zip and ask you to update. Press volume up to confirm.
the file that was downloaded is: recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc.img

when i get a few minutes, ill type all the steps ive currently taken and see where the problem lies.
Oh, that's an .img file, I'm not sure what you'd do with that without a custom recovery already. I'd recommend downloading a recovery from www.dougpiston.com or use rom manager.
when i first installed gingerbread onto my device last nice, i downloaded a file that i had to change to PB31IMG.zip. So when i go into my CD card there is a folder called clockworkmod.
In the folder there are 2 files: .settings and .settings 2
Somewhere along the line i think something got screwed up and id like to start from scratch. Would you be willing to walk with me through this thing lol. Youve been such a great help so far. Please let me know. I live in california and im off work at 6 so ill be doing this after work so i dont have to hide the screen every two seconds lol.
Would you take the challange to help me?
Thank you
It sounds like you installed rom manager maybe, or a custom recovery since you have the clockworkmod folder on your SD card. What was the PB31IMG that you tried previously?
Let me know, and I'll subscribe to this thread so I'm notified of new posts, or feel free to pm me. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be up to later but I'll try to respond ASAP. Maybe continue posting in this thread so other people can chime in and help too.

Ok first uninstall rom manager and the superuser app if you have it installed and delete any PB31IMG.zips that are on the root of your sd card. Then download cwm recovery here http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip, place it on the root of your sd (not in any folders). Then download the superuser binary from here http://dinc.does-it.net/su.zip and place it on the root of your sd. Then go to menu, settings, manage applications and make sure fast boot is unchecked. Power off the phone and then boot into hboot by holding vol down and power at the same time. Once in hboot it will automaticly find the recovery and prompt you to press vol up to install. Once installed it will prompt to reboot hit vol down and you will go back to the main hboot screen. Then vol down to recovery and hit the power button. Once in recovery select install zip from sd card and then select the su.zip. It will ask you to confirm select yes. Once installed select reboot phone. Once the phone boots up go to the market and get the superuser app to keep su up to date and allow programs superuser permissions. Install that and then download rom manager from the market so you can keep recovery up to date and make backups. Thats it you should now be rooted.

what do you know about HTC Sense 3.0 or 3.5?
0. Get S-OFF via XTC-Clip, or UNLOCK from НТСDEV
1. Download this
2. Connect your device to PC via USB with usb debug mode
3. Run recovery.bat from archive
4. Press any key when asked
5. That's all. You've got CWM.
To Root
0. Download lastest Superuser and su here
1. Put Superuser and su in the root of SD card
2. Go to CWM and install zips
3. Now rooted
Tnx to alquez for recovery port
CWM installed just fine , however the root did not happen inspite of installing both the zip files via the recovery cwm! Still an S-ON
I'd recommed rooting through HTC Super tool.

Root and S-ON are not the same.
I did the first part, worked like a charm, thanks!
As far as the second portion, though, how exactly do I "Go" to CWM? Do you just mean the Manager that I download from the Market? Or how do I boot to CWM? This is all very different from my Nook Color.
EDIT:
Disregard. I figured it out. I will return if I have an updates. Thanks again.
EDIT2:
The Root portion does not work. I ran both of the zip files, but my phone is still not rooted. If I access CM in the phone it states that the phone is not rooted and needs to be in order to perform such a task.
try to find out, is there su app in system\bin?

Point it to the file you downloaded

Can you elaborate on what you did to answer your own question?
I have the same one. I don't understand what's meant by "Go to CWM" or "reboot into CWM". In fact, I don't even understand what CWM is.
Is that just ClockworkMod? If so, what's the reason for downloading it from the links people post, as opposed to simply downloading it from the Market for free?
I power off my device, and then hold volume DOWN and power, and I get into some non-graphical program (not even sure what you call it), but there doesn't seem to be any option to install anything from a .zip on the SD card.
I'm confused

I tried a lot of method to unlock my bootloader on HTC Wildfire S, proble is that i have software 2.26.401.3 and baseband 47.23e.35.3038H_7.57.39.10M.....if tried directly on the pc with ruu.exe i gave the error 140....when i put the ruu on SDCard it say the the version is older....i make a goldcard, and he said again the the version is older.....if i tried to flash he said ''FAILED <remote: signature verify fail>''
I want to specify that the phone is unlocked, i tried 4 carriers and all work's good!
On HBOOT it say ***LOCKED*** and is S-ON
Please help! give me some advice!
PS: Sorry for my bad english!
Dont flash the RUU,directly go to the unlocking procedure
New updates have unlockable HBOOTS
Thanx
But, was a moment ideea to flash, i know that it is not good to flash it first, problem is that i tried and i read a lot of post's from XDA with unlocking procesdure for Wildfire S but why is the reason that not work for me!
If someone can help i apreciate!
Csoul is correct. Your bootloader is already updated to an unlockable one and you need to start at htcdev.com with the step that retrieves your identifier token and sends it up to their website. You cannot update your bootloader further.
Another problem!
I want to thank you for your advice, i make it UNBLOCKED with htcdev...but now, after i installed recovery.5.0.2.8 it stuck on black screen, HBOOT it's ok, boot ok, but it won't enter in recovery to instal root.zip!!!
What can i do now?
please help me!
it means cwm has not been flashed properly .so only you get black screen when you enter recovery .
Step 1: Flashing the Custom Recovery UI by XDA.cn
Again, make sure your device is S-OFF.
Again, make sure your memory card is formatted FAT32.
Place the PG76IMG.zip file into your phone SD card.
Disable Fast Boot from your phone settings (Settings > Power > Disable Fastboot)
Turn your phone off.
Hold down the "power" button and the "volume down" button for a few seconds till you see the HBOOT screen.
Don't press anything. The system will scan for some files and it will prompt you for an update. Move the cursor to OK (volume up) to start the flashing process.
After it finishes, press the "power" button to restart the system.
Let Android boot and delete the PG76IMG.zip file from your SD card via USB.
Congrats! Custom recovery has been installed. Process to step 2.
Step 2: Flashing the rooting script by XDA.cn
Copy the root.zip file into your phone SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Boot into recovery: Hold down the "power" button and the "volume down" button for a few seconds till you see the HBOOT screen. Let it do its thing and then select "RECOVERY".
At the recovery menu, use the volume buttons to select "install zip from sd card".
Then select "choose zip from sd card".
Then find the "root.zip" file on the list.
Select "YES".
Let the script do its thing till you see "Install from sd card completed".
Select "Go Back" on the menu till you find the "power off" option and select it.
Turn your phone back on and let Android boot
you can use the custom recovery PG76IMG.img or else clockworkmod recovery from
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
cwm recovery have more options ,so i prefer you to use that .
you can find those FILES in the source which i have specified.

If you have ADB installed, do this.
Download the Recovery image from here: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
Put it in a folder where you have installed adb. Example: c:\android
Then reboot phone into bootloader and enter fastboot mode after it scans.
Connect the phone by USB cable. The FASTBOOT should change into FASTBOOT USB. If it doesn't, download and install HTC Sync.
Go to cmd and type the following:
cd c:\android
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
It should flash successfully.
Then enter recovery and flash root.zip
Done! Enjoy.

so you unlocked your bootloader through htcdev.then use htcsupertool to root your phone then install cwm recovery from market and then install it.now when you select recovery from hboot menu it ll take you to cwm recoverymode then install custom roms which you want.
Thanx

okay thanx.follow the steps:
your unlocked bootloader through htc dev so use htcsupertool to root it.wants brief information here is the thread see it.
http://www.htcwildfiresblog.com/2012/03/guide-to-rooting-htc-wildfire-s-235-s.html
now you re rooted.then open android market find clockwork mod recovery.install it.after when you open it it ll ask for root access ,allow it.
and in clockwork mod app you will see first clockwork recovery mod click on that screen displays your model "wildfire s" then install it.now you have successfully installed cwm recovery.
its dont..find custom roms which you want and place in your sd card.(just in sdcard dont put it in any folder)
now when you want to install custom roms go to recovery mode (via hboot>recovery or cwm app second option recovery mode)
then install files from sd card and select your rom.zip
its easy.hope its works.but dont forget to backup your stock rom ok..
good luck
---------- Post added at 06:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:51 PM ----------
and about increasing internal memory:
two options:link2sd,app2sd
first of all you have to download minipartition tool
http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html
and format your sd card to fat32,ext4 and linux swap.
then if you want to increasing your internal memory in your stock rom just install link2sd from android market.thats it
and
want app2sd install custom rom which supports app2sd and you have to a zip file which you can get at your rom(if it supports app2sd) named app2sdinstaller.zip kind of.and install it via cwm recovery after installing rom.
overclocking kernel:
i dont have knowledge about that but its mainly depends on your custom rom.if rom has oc kernel you can overclock it by setcpu,no frills etc apps.(dont overclock more than 768Mhz,it ll dangerous can melt your phone)
Not work

okay.you done same as mentioned here:
Now that you have unlocked your bootloader, launch SuperTool.exe.
Make sure your phone is loaded as normal and that USB Debugging is enabled.
Press 1 to prep using Zergrush method.
Once it has done that, press 3 to root.
Once it has rooted, type reboot and then press enter.
It will reset your phone and you should now have root.
(If it did not work, try pressing 2 instead of 1 on the above instruction.)
Now on your phone, superuser app ll installed on your phone directly but if thats dont work.go to market and download superuser app.and tried hope it ll work.
if it isnt work tried again.once i have same problem as you re facing but when i again use supertool it ll work.
it won't work
i tried step by step all you say, but unfortunately doesn't work!!!
what can i do ?

I just got an HTC Desire A8181, and it is my very first time using an Android Device. The thing is that I already know that you can do a lot of things with Android devices (thats why I swapped from iOS to Android). Now here is my point, I basically need to know:
Basics about software and OS customizing for Android.
Basic things to know before do anything to my phone.
Tutorials for root the device (HTC Desire A8181)
Want to know if it is possible to make the phone work faster in terms of Manage the Processor and Ram Usage, how to do it, and understand the process.
And any other information that could be useful in order to make my phone work a lot better (take into consideration that I'm new with the OS and the phone, so there are a lot of things that I dont know about this theme.)
I also want to know if it is possible to install the latest Android Version on my HTC Desire and make it work fast.
Thanks in advance for your help!!!
The desire comes with sense 2.3 gingerbread. Sense is HTC's skin that they overlay ontop of the android operating system. Although it may look nice (doesnt really look that good to me), it is heavy and causes decreases in performance. When you s-off your device, and install a custom recovery you will be able to flash an aosp based custom rom. Aosp = android open source project, and basically means stock pure android...nothing running on top. As you can probably predict, this will result in faster speeds, less ram usage, and better battery. I think that answers the first few questions.
Next Ill move on to how to root it (make your phone good). I honestly think the term "root" is deceiving to most new users. I see people asking "how do i root my phone", but i think what they really want is to install a custom recovery and flash a custom rom. Being rooted on stock rom is pointless to me. Custom roms are where the good stuff is at.
Post your bootloader details here and ill walk you through the process. To get these details turn the phone off, then hold power + volume down until the phone boots into the bootloader. It should look similar to this. Post all of the first couple of lines at the top. The whole process summarized is this: s-off, install custom recovery, flash custom rom
There are also some other things that i would recommend doing so that you can have extra space for apps (you probably noticed you barely have any space at the moment), but ill get to that later when i give you more instructions.
Thanks for response so fast!

Nope, just your bootloader details for now.
Please tell me that I did not ****ed my phone
Ok so here is my problem now on, I tried to flash the CyanogenMod, but I dont know if i ****ed my phone or im just missing something...
Here is what I did:
1- I followed the instructions on another thread about the HTC_Unlock_Bootloader_Tool in order to unlock the bootloader.
2- I copied the CM-7.2.0.1-bravo.zip file into the sd card manually and also by using the "adb push" command.
But now my phone turns on, but every time that I try to access the Recovery option from the Fastboot menu just gives me an icon of the phone with a red advertise sign and then I press "Volume Up + Power" and got access to some sort of recovery options... But cannot go further than that... What can I do? Please tell me that I did not ****ed my phone?
When u unlock the bootloader u must then flash recovery via fastboot commands. In my sig ul see 4ext recovery as PB99IMG, download and extract the recovery.img and flash via fastboot. U can find a fastboot guide in bortaks troubleshooting guide (in my sig also)
Thanks for your response.

Ok so here is my new actual situation, cause I went to sleep at 3.00am just to keep working with the phone...
After check within some forums and stuff I realized that there was an app called ROM Manager that can flash the Recovery and also the ROM (Cyanogenmod is the one I want to install), I started researching for another way to do it since every single time that I tried to start in FastBoot and use the recovery option in order to flash anything I just got a black screen with an icon that seems to be the same phone with a red alert sign on its corner (icon which i really did not like at all!!!), so I started checking for another way to work with this and found ROM Manager, but when the app was installed and I tried to flash the ClockworkMod Recovery but ROM Manager was giving an error related with permissions, I thought that my HTC Desire was already Rooted since it said "*** Unlocked ***" on the Fastboot menu (My fault!) but I realized that it is not Rooted after download the Root Checker app from the Store... So basically here is the case resumed: Fastboot "Unlocked" (Via easy unlocker tool), ROM Manager App (Installed but no permissions to Flash the ClockworkMod Recovery nor CyanogenMod ROM), Root Checker App (Installed and seems that my phone is not rooted)... How do I need to proceed now on???
Thanks in advance for all your help! I never thought that Android were this complicated, but I like it ****ing so much!!! So I think that it is most likely a beginner issue

Well, to root it, you need to flash a Superuser zip from recovery. To flash it, you need a custom recovery. To get a custom recovery, you do what @jmcclue said 2 posts above.

Hahahahaha yeah sorry about that but I'm working so it is difficult to be on the phone talking about Hard Drives and troubleshoot them, while trying to figure out whats going on with my phone hahahahaha
So Basically and if I'm not mistaken (hopefully not, let me know if I am) I need to do the following:
-Download and Flash the 4eXT Recovery as PB99IMG from the previous response: After download the file can I go to CMD and use "adb reboot bootloader" then "adb fastboot flash recovery PB99IMG.zip" (that must flash the recovery right?)
-Then I need to Flash the Superuser from a Zip file: By accessing the new Recovery Interface installed previously, wipe chache / install from sd card / install from zip (that must root my device right?)
-After that I should be able to turn on my phone as normal and use the ROM Manager in order to Flash the CyanogenMod 7.2 right?
Sorry that I bother all of you in this way with so many question and ****, but I really want not only to flash my drive but also to learn about the process and what I'm doing to my phone... Thanks for everything.

You don't need to go to recovery for the PB99IMG method. Only bootloader.

Yes thats what you should do. If that doesnt work you would try flashing the recovery via fastboot.
When you go into recovery right now and see the red warning thing, that is normal. It is the stock recovery, which makes sense because you havent installed a custom recovery yet. Once 4ext is installed you will no longer see that screen.

Do this:

Unlocked does not mean s-off. You are Unlocked, but S-on. Just flash the recovery through fastboot, like jmcclue originally said.

Sello I'm glad to let you know that finally I got my phone.cpletely flashed with the CM7 and this works just great... the only thing that I were not able to do is to partition my 4Gb SD card to assign 1Gb as phone extension and the rest as external storage...
Can you help me with this last thing, I just used a previous post...
With the 4ext recovery y created a first partition of 1024Mb as the ext of the system but my phone does not sees it, it keeps saying that only have 140Mb total as internal
