Cons of switching to yakju from yakjuux? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I wanna switch so I can get updates from Google, and not Samsung
So what are the cons of switching?
I heard it makes your boot loader locked, what does a locked boot loader mean?
I don't plan on rooting by the way
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App

Been there, I am with Bell, had yakjuux and flashed to yakju. No regret, nothing really changed so far.
Your boot loader will stay unlocked, you it wipes your devices completely as a scurity measure. So make sure you do a backup 1st.

did you get android 4.0.2?
oh man... im such a noob to these things
can someone in toronto (mississauga / brampton) do this for me?
ill pay you

There is no point to doing this. All ICS builds are ICS. Not everyone on yakju gets their updates faster than people on yakjuux. You will not magically get the 4.0.2 update just by doing this.

this is exactly what i was thinking right now...
i don't mind if samsung updates my phone instead of google, but the question is
how much longer does samsung take?
i don't wanna wait till the galaxy s2 gets ice cream sandwich

"Androind Updating" after changing to yakju
Using the USB drivers and Firmware from the Samsung Germany website I went from yakjuzs (Hong Kong) to yakju.
After doing this, I powered off my phone, and powered it back on.
After the Google Logo and Animation, I get a message box that says "Android Updating...". after short period of time (under 2s) at the bottom of the screen it says "No Service", then the message box says "starting Applications" under the "Android Updating..." message. The phone then finishes initialization as normal and goes to the home screen.
This made me think that my phone might be trying to upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2. So I went to the system settings > about phone > system updates and checked for updates. It said my phone was up to date, and the version in the about section is 4.0.1.
Has anyone had this happen to them before? Have any ideas?
This happens every time I shutoff my phone and turn it back on.

You will not wait that long. It is still AOSP ICS, no matter who builds it. The wait will never be much longer than yakju devices. Hell my friend is on yakju and got the volume fix a week ago so so much for that.

Android upgrading is not the same as changing to a new version its a feature in ICS that optimizes installed apps and whatnot, completely different things

Easy solution: flash a 4.0.3 ROM in ClockworkMod Recovery.

No - ROM's here are full ROM's. You can flash a top of everything and it will be fine. All you need is unlocked bootloader and clockwork mod recovery installed (check stickies in General/Development subforums)

Only issues i have had after switching is now my battery meter always shows "On Battery" even after charging .. It charges fine, and i can get 100% Charge, infact i find i have better battery life on 4.0.4 Yakju then on 4.0.1 Yakjuux ... Unfortunatly the batter thing is annoying me even though its the only issue i am having.
I have also noticed my benchmarks on the device have fell a little bit. I may find a Yakjuux build and revert back to it. But for now ill test this build for a week and see how it goes.

android lying down + red triangle?

Hey guys....
Am I NOT supposed to allow the OTA update if Im rooted and running stock ROM????
This is the second time I noticed I have a dead android w/ his hood open and a red triangle.
Didn't have this issue on my Vibrant, but I read that you had to go COMPLETELY back to stock everything (Rom, kernel, recovery) on the LG G2x, and then update.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running Slim ICS
If you are not completely stock the OTA will fail.
Thank you guys.......is there another way to add the OTA features if desirable?
I don't even know if it's worth the effort?!?!?
Yeah, usually a dev will incorporate the base into a rom, or take features from it. Do you have a GSM or CDMA Gnex?

No you're not suppose to run otas over a rooted device even if stock.
Anyways, that Android with open chest and exclamation mark is the STOCK RECOVERY. Just press power then volume up to access the options of the stock recovery.

I'm with Sprint so I'm 99% certain it's the CDMA.
Honestly, after 2 yrs of fussing with the Evo and wanting a viable ICS Rom that never seemed to happen, I haven't even considered playing with other Rom's since I picked up this GN and finally got a functional ICS Rom.
What's the incentive with the current crop of Rom's for this phone, mostly cosmetic or functional as well?
Thanks for the reply!

You are getting that because your recovery is not stock. It has nothing to do with root. You can accept OTA updates if your ROM/radio/kernel/recovery are stock. Root or no root makes NO difference.
hai there guys..i'm new to android and just got my galaxy nexus for a couple of days now...mine is running ics 4.0.1 now and i want to update it to ICS 4.0.4 by using the system updates in the setting. Samsung OTA stuck on reboot

I got the update message (41.2) MB.
It is being downloaded and verifies.
I then select to restart & install.
The phone starts booting, but stays on the Google logo for a very long time (more than half an hour).
To try the update again I have to take the battery out, restart the phone (which shows 4.0.2), clear Google Services Framework and check for update.
The updates download etc. etc.
My phone is not rooted and it had no problem in the past updating OTA to 4.0.2
Thanks
So you are trying to update "YAKJUXW" 4.0.2 to 4.0.4?
hmm.. have you flashed any custom kernel or another radio baseband and are you using custom Clockworkmod..?
try to make backup of the 4.0.2 if possible (move to somewhere PC, hardware,..) and then make factory reset and try then update it to 4.0.4

No. Nothing like this.
I will try the factory reset if I can't fix it without it.

I've been experiencing same. Bought GalNex from (apparently) Poland before Play store. It is yakjuxw. Past two weeks it's tried to update itself 3 times and just sits at (white) Google on black screen for a very long time.
I actually have to remove battery to recover. Then all is well, but no firmware update and if i follow reddit.com's -> ysk_how_to_get_the_404_ota_quicker to "force" the update, same result.
Did your factory reset solve the problem?
oh4real
No resolution
Sorry, I did nothing so far. I'm still on 4.0.2.
When I get the time, I'm likely to move on to a rooted yakju.
If you do manage to resolve it, please tell us.
Thanks

Dead Robot

I got the Bell Canada Galaxy Nexus, which ran the yakjuux and I flashed it 2months ago to Google's yakju.
I did the Framework trick: Settings -> Apps -> All -> Google Services Framework -> Clear data
It downloads the update and everything, but once it restarts to install Jellybean, I get the green Android robot dead on the floor with a red warning sign on it lol. After a min or so, it restarts and I get the old colorful shapes and I'm back to ICS I go to "Check now", nothing.
I think you're getting in the recovery but without a recovery installed...
That's the screen you get when you go into recovery without having installed an actual recovery system. Try following the tutorial to get permanent recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357642 and following this tutorial here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28178320&postcount=2
You must be completely stock for the OTA to apply. Looking at your screenshot your problem is your radio. You must have XXLA2 for yakju. You can download the radio here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24193754&postcount=315
ALSO: The above post is incorrect.

Would this radio work on Bell network? I did have some experience with the network going grey and reconnecting back to blue, it does that sometimes and sometimes it'll go all grey and I have to reboot the phone. Sorry, I'm kinda new to this.

Yes it will work just fine and its required for the yakju OTA.
Also when you flashed yakju did you also flash the bootloader? It is also required for the OTA.

[Q] Issues with OTA 4.2 Update

Hey there all,
I have a fully-stock Samsung GNex from the play store. Its trying to update me to 4.2 (if that's the right number... the newest ota.) Every time it tries to do this, it gets to about 25% before popping to a screen with the android lying down, with a red triangle and exclamation point. Everything I can find on Google relates to custom roms and recovery. Mine is 100% stock, and still doing it. What gives? Will post more info if requested... wasn't sure what to give, so...
Thanks in advance!

If you are absolutely, positively, 100% stock then you should have no issues. Never used a toolkit to root or unlock anything at all?
Regardless, if you care to learn a bit about your phone, you could start here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170 and learn to manually apply the update, or another custom rom for that matter.

something wrong with software update

Just tried to perform a software update with the FOTA on my i9192, 4.2.2 on I9192xxuamh3, this is stock rom.
My phone has not been modded in anyway, and previously it shows I have the latest F/W, today it say's my phone has been modified and cannot perform update, I have check the status through the about device and through the android download.
after a battery pull, all went back to normal, has anyone got this message before or is it just a bug.

Yes mate, I have had this problem most often. The status shows modified but after a restart, or even the battery out, it goes back to Official. It also happens in the S3. Over my research I have also found out that its the memory card that does that. I dont know how that and that can relate. But it does happen so dont worry as long as it gets back on Official.
