[Q] Help? Lost root Access and Clockworkmod? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running Htc Desire S-OFF running Cyanogenmod7.1
A little while ago there was a new feed about running Ubuntu on Htc Desire on Xda's front site so i looked it up and started to do it, in the end i got all the requirments one of which was busybox (which i found weird as i already has superuser but i installed it anyway)
in the end i didn't actually ever run ubuntu or ever get it working in the end as i just didn't have the time.
The other day i went to uninstall busy box which i did and now it seems that i dont have any root access even though i have super user and i dont seem to have clockworkmod anymore for some reason?
When i power down phone hold down button and power ect to enter hboot when i choose recovery it goes to fastboot power down, reboot or hboot?
Help all i wanted to do was flash Miui? :L

is your hboot s-off? If yes it's no problem to reflash your recovery via adb.

Could I reflash the recovery by going through revolutionary?

When do I run the Revolutionary pre4 file?
You shouldnt have to run a file. Just start up the program, plug your phone in with USB debugging on and let it do its thing.
Are you saying I don't need to run fastboot?
I D/L'd the pre3 file, plugged in my phone with USB debugging on, it just says "waiting for device".
What do I need to do BEFORE running the Revolution pre3 program?

If you are on windows then install appropriate drivers.
I think from what times said it has to be pre 2. And You cant mount the sd card. And you need to have the right HTC drivers installed
You also have to have fastboot turned off which is under power.
Can anyone tell me where I can download the drivers. I can't get revolutionary to detect my device.

I've been reading the forums for awhile waiting for s-off to be achieved and I just want to verify that this process will just simply root my stock 2.3.3. I don't want to flash a new ROM, I'm happy with the stock experience but I just want to be able to use Titanium Backup and freeze programs as I see fit like I did on my Fascinate.
Will this indeed just put SU/root into my stock without having to flash a new ROM?

No but it does get you started down that road. This will give you S-Off which will then allow you to install ClockworkMod which will then allow you to flash su and root your current ROM.
Here is what I did:
1. Installed HTC fastboot drivers (download link was on Revolutionary documentation wiki).
2. Connected phone in Charge mode.
3. Ran Revolutionary. It crashed installing CWM Recovery.
4. Ran it again, said the phone was already S-OFF but let me try to flash the CWM Recovery again. This time it worked.
5. Downloaded the SU binary from that same documentation wiki page.
6. Rebooted and went into recovery (make sure that Fastboot is unchecked in the settings).
7. Flashed the SU binary. Phone is now rooted.
8. Downloaded and installed Busybox and ROM Manager.
9. Badda bing.
10. Badda boom.
Hope this helps!
only works on Gingerbread now!
So if I get a DInc 2 with 2.2, do I have to ota the thing to GB to use this?

I am stuck at "Waiting for Device" after running the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Any ideas?
I attempted to do it on my own but i must of messed up half way where my computer wouldn't recognize my phone but i did get S-off but didn't get CWM on it and ended up just factory resetting. I was also wondering if I do root will I be able to switch back and forth from say CM7 to MIUI or back to stock and still have everything setup already?

Yes. ROM Manager gives you the option to make a backup of everything before it flashes the new ROM.

[Q] HTC Desire Recovery Problems

Hello
I have a small problem to get to the Recovery, every time I try to get the Recovery mode, it keeps getting an error, I want to upgrade it to android 4.0 for HTC Desire, and I have Android 2.3 on it now.
Could anyone please help me.
Thanks in advance
Jaxa
Get s-off and flash custom recovery (4ext)
In short. You don't have recovery, it's not an error.
Guys I have a similar problem (i think), I bought this used. I have an s-off boot screen with the Joker on it and have clockworkmod 5.02.. recovery plus a .90 Hboot on. It was on cm7 or sth and when ive tried flashing ics sense and supernova, Im stuck on that screen.
I've to take off my battery then insert it back to go to recovery. Volume down+power aint working for me, looks like the whole (-) button is messed up.
Kindly point me in the right direction. Thanks

Usually from the recovery-thread.
But if you want to flash 4EXT-recovery, you do not need an img-file. Just download the 4EXT Recovery from thread (free) or from Play Store (paid, for donation), start the app and follow instructions.

After downloading the fastboot-files, you can extract them and then start CMD in Windows, switch to the extracted folder and you can run ADB / Fastboot just fine [at least for Windows, for Linux / Mac it's a little more complicated (see the guide jn my sig)]. So it's not really a "stand-alone"-program.

Fastboot & Windows 8

Hi all,
hit my first problem with Windows 8.
I wanted to test a JB rom on my Desire but I have to change my HBOOT (I have Data++ atm, need stock).
My problem is that I cannot seem to get any of the fastboot usb drivers to install on my Windows 8 RTM to enable Revolutionary to work.
Anyone able to offer any help?

What recovery do u have?
Have u tried the PB99IMG method of changing hboots? Basicaly download the hboot from alpharev (PB99IMG) Rename it to just PB99IMG.zip, put it on ur sdcard... Put the JB rom there too.. and then boot into bootloader (volume down + power) and bootloader will ask to update bootloader, volume up for yes.. it will then ask u to reboot? Volume down for no.. then boot into recovery,(if 4ext) format all partitions except sdcard then reboot recovery and u can then install the rom.
Click the adb & fastboot guide in my sig for a great guide coz fastboot is the best way to do things

I'm using CWM at the moment, haven't changed or updated it for months since I last installed Marange ICS Miui pretty much when it first came out.
I have done the fastboot method before, but I kinda like the PB99IMG way, sounds a lot cleaner. Many thanks for the help.
PS: for anyone else having the same problem, it worked!

[Q] How to root stock android 2.3.3 without using volume keys (broken)?!

Hello,
Does anyone know how I can root mij HTC desire with stock android 2.3.3 ROM without using the volume buttons (they're broken). I've tried the unrevoked method, but it doesn't work on 2.3.3. I can't try revolutionary because I'll have to use the volume buttons in the boot menu to root.
So... does anyone has a solution?
Thanks in advance!

U root the phone by flashing superuser.zip file in recovery. My thinking is get s-off (revolutionary) and install CWM recovery through revolutionary then download rom manger (even tho its not recomended, but is fine for basic use) and u can use that to boot into recovery coz ur volume buttons dont work and u cant do it bootloader way.

But after I've made the phone s-off, how do I add the custom recovery? I need to get in fastboot, and to get in there, I need to use the volume keys, right?
Edit: and if I manage to put 4ext on the phone, how do I boot the phone in recovery? Does the CWM app works with 4ext? so if I click on reboot in recovery on the CWM app, will it reboot in 4ext recovery?

Ok here's an update. I've done everything step by step. The S-OFF process worked and I've flashed CWM recovery with revolutionary. There's only one problem, I can't acces recovery mode via ROM manager. It keeps giving me the error: "An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!". Does anyone has a solution?
Edit: Don't you have to be rooted to use ROM manager to reboot into recovery?
Edit: Nevermind, I did it using adb. Thanks all!

I'm currently using Official 2.3.3, and I use revolutionary to S-OFF my device.
Now my hboot menu is showing AlpaRev and hboot 6.93.1002, and I'm able to enter the recovery.
MY PROBLEM is that, in RECOVERY MENU, I just stuck in there,
I can't enter(can browse using vol+- key or track ball) any selection of the menu
when I select either one, my phone just show REVOLUTIONARY, when press power button it back to recovery menu.
Can't even Power Off or Reboot System....Have to pull out battery, any one can help please?
Install 4ext recovery touch. Check my sig for the pb99img zip.

Is there a way to reset the DHD if it is not booting and CWM recovery is malfunctioni

Hey pals. I have an issue with my DHD...I am running CyanogenMod 10.1 and yesturday someone messed with the developer options and chose to emulate a 1024x760, or something like that, display. The phone froze and I had to remove the battery to shut it down...However when I try to do a factory reset through CWM recovery the phone freezes on the HTC logo and when I try to boot It freezes before reaching the home screen. I realized that this phone can't boot normally now cos the display emulation i talked about earlier is causing an issue, and the situation has been complicated by the fact that I cant use CWM recovery...So I cant acces the phone completely...So I am wondering if there is a way to undo that setting without using CWM recovery...Something like maybe removing the battery or opening it up n remove something for some time etc. Any help will be appreciated.

You are s-off dont use ruu, it may make you s-on.
Press Fastboot then do the flashing from cmd cd to your your-android-sdk-folder-location-here/platform-tools/fastboot.exe like cd c:/android/ then do fastboot flash recovery.img and make sure you have recovery.img in your tools folder. You can find a .img from the thread I posted previously (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2317202&d=1381475742) in this example extract it place .img in the platform-tools location and rename the .img to recovery.img
Flashing a ruu wont make you loose s-off, it makes you loose root. Two completely different things.
Your issue happened when you did the factory reset.
One possible solution is to:
Flash ruu
Flash a recovery
Flash rom
As long as your phone is recognized by your pc (which may not due to having done tue factory reset - can't remember if it does or doesn't), then you should be good to go.

Unfortunately the PC is not recognizing the phone anymore...Do u think I can do it by SD card...i.e renaming the stock ROM or Recovery to PD98IMG.zip and putting it on the root of SD card? I guess the solution has to not involve USB connectivity

Sounds reasonable, but not quite sure. I can't remember if you can flash a rom that way. I would suggest to do a proper search, read and see what you can find in that regard.

Well in my research (back in 2010) to flash a ruu with a previous version you need a gold card. After you get the ruu as a PDxxxxx.zip format (look for a desire hd one as others will brick your phone) and place it in the root of your sd card. Reboot your phone in recovery and press vol+ to flash, and wait for 10-20mins and your phone should be alive.
Some sd's dont work with gold cards (in my experience, a kingston 16gb didn't work but a samsung 8gb did for some reason)
