best way to prevent screen protector peeling - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Couldn't find a topic that discussed this, if there is sorry!
I have had several screen protectors currently an InvisiSheild and have had nothing but problems with them. I constantly have the screen protectors peeling off the screen and have used a knife to cut edges into the protector to prevent it from peeling as much.
Was wondering if anyone else had this issue and how they solved it?
Cheers.

I use steinhell screen protectors, never had that problem
We're comin from a pure power source.

I have the invisashield and had the same prob. It sticks like glue but the bottom edge started coming up, from putting it in and out of my pocket. I peeled it up a little and cut the edge off with some scissors and its good now.

Yeah, I've been cutting off bits of this invisishield for some time and its getting to look like swiss cheese. They used to offer the 'free lifetime replacements' however not sure if they still do.
I might need to try the SGP screen protectors, still curious if there are any others as well though. At this point anything is probably better.

I got rid of my screen protector after it got all scratched and ugly haven't replaced it yet and have 0 scratches on my nekkid screen, the evos glass is pretty hard to scratch Ive put it in my pocket with keys and still no scratches yet just don't kick it across gravel or drag it thru sand and it shouldn't scratch very easy, I had the screen protector on since I got it and when I pulled it off I was amazed at how much clearer the screen looked

Get a otter box that's the best so far no scratches either. A bit expensive but saves your phone.
cowboy up

Shame, half the fun is kicking ky phone around in the dirt
Good to hear that my screen probably won't get scratched and the otterbox does not sound too bad.
Comming from the Hero which did manage to get scratched up quite a bit its really good to hear!

So called Gorilla Glass

To clear rumors or to be very specific!
I took off my t-mobile screen protector yesterday and to day discovered a deep scratch on the "gorilla glass"...
To be very clean. Im very very verrrryy careful with my electronics and never damaged any in anyway! But its how how people say you can stratch it with keys or pens or put it in a bad with bolts and screws and the glass wont be scratched.
It false advertisement because i had my vibrant in an empty pocket fresh dry cleaned too! no dust and anything inside to cut it.
I had many average phones where i only got a tiny scratch on the screen from the phone falling from my hand after 2yrs of use and landing on concrete...
its funny how this glass gets scratched up very deeply without being dropped or scrapped at! and its a scratch for sure because when i move my thumb on it pressed i can feel the sharp line of the scratch on my thumb
Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, maybe only euro galaxy S phones have the gorilla glass... because this sure doesnt!
So for those who want to go naked!!! DOOOOOONT! buy a screen protector!
man... although a simple glass wont scratch with nothing in your pocket..
Maybe someone touched it when you didnt know, or something happened.
I've been using my vibrant for about three weeks now and have no scratches, only some marks on the battery cover.
The samsung vibrant does indeed have gorilla glass. Just because it has gorilla glass doesn't mean its un -scratchable. It just means it's more resistant than regular glass...if you don't mind me asking...what did you have in your pockets? A machete? A light saber?!...I kid, I kid...the morale of this story is, get a screen protector, prevent your vibrant from getting scathed by a light saber!

whether it has Gorilla glass or not, this is the FIRST phone that ended up with deep scratch only after a month of use.
I really dont care, i got it replaced and finally bought screen protector that i really like. (anti glare and anti fingerprint)
People should seriously invest into realook, it's only ten bucks and you won't even know it's on. But don't take my word for it or the other hundred posts here on xda that claim the same thing.

with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint you will always tell that its there. i personally dont like reflective screens or screen protectors so my anti-glare and anti-fingerprint work great.
lol. this phone isn't fragile, you must have done something. no way the phone got scratched being in a pocket with nothing else in it. unless you walked that pocket into the corner of a desk or something...
my phone's been without screen protector or case since release with no scratches or blemishes.

+1 not a scratch.
Real Gorilla Glass takes alot to scratch. The ZuneHD is known to have the Gorilla Glass. My ZuneHD has been naked since the day I brought it and today it is still scratch free. It is possible our Samsung Vibrant does not have the Gorilla Glass as part of carrier modification to cu cost. who knows.
that sucks man, i would be pissed too.
but what did it get scratched on? must have had something in your pocket with it...?

Interesting post...I'm actually a screen protector freak and have ordered multiple brands of screen protectors for the Vibrant (actually even Galaxy S just to try it...) so I'm all FOR screen protectors...best one so far is from Korea.
About your scratch...unless there's a scratch fairy, there is SOMETHING that caused that scratch. It may be foreign to you because you may not have known when it happened...It's highly possible someone else without your knowledge was the cause of it. Scratches just don't appear out of thin air...
Bottom line...the glass on the Samsung is solid...very solid...I've dropped my phone before so I know first hand how durable the glass is...it's some tough $#!t....

Its just the way of the world. If you put a screen protector on, soon after you take it off your will get scratched.
If you put it in a case, soon after you take it off you'll drop your phone. Call it karma, or just dumb luck, but it always seems to happen this way

I've put this phones in my pocket with keys many times, dropped it several times, not a scratch yet. Whatever it's made of, it's pretty tough.

just to say this... like many people who were surprised by vibrant getting scratched so easily... Im on of them too! Because in theory if it has gorilla glass its suppose to be a lot tougher than average glass! I understand its not un-scratchable but it deff got scratched very easily being that i had nothing in my pockets! and that whenever it did recieve that scratch it wasnt from something really bad because i would of noticed it... since the phone is around me all the time!
So if any kind souls who believe this is a gorilla screen please demonstrate it for us on a video.... Take a key and scratch it the glass around and we'll see then....
I don't use a sp, but my phone still looks brand new.. No sp, no case, usually keep my phone in my pocket when walking around. Screen is still smooth a glass. Could samsung have used different materials depending on when it was built, kind of like the problem with the shortage if amoled screens?

I actually dropped my phone on one of those concrete roads in a way that send the phone sliding on the concrete several feet face down. All 4 corners of the phone's bezel show scratches but nothing on the screen itself.

I would never personally do this, and a 3 dollar screen protector to protect the integrity of a very sweet piece of equipment, is a very small price to pay.
I just find it hard to believe that with only cloth surrounding it it got scratched. Not even lint in your pocket? I call BS

iShieldz vs Realook

I just ordered some Realook screen protectors from Amazon today. The stores here did not have any screen protectors of any brand for the Vibrant, and I just didnt want to wait any longer without protection. Then to my surprise a few of the Bell Mobility dealers just got in some iShieldz. They tell me they stopped carrying other brands because they found these were the best protectors hands down. Can anyone else comment on how they compare to the Realook protectors.
i recently bought some cheap ebay protectors for my galaxy s and to be honest i was not satisfied with the finish and bubbles on my screen. so i came on here and researched on screen protectors there are 2 kinds of them : one is water based screen protector ishields is one of them and second is dry application. i did not want to risk my device with water damage and went with realook "SP". ishields are not smooth and have that rubber feel to it just like invisible shields. i would recommend reallook as long as u do a bubble free installation , install it in ur bathroom after u take a shower cuz the dust particles settles down in steam
i will post some pix of my samsung with realook on in next post
here s a 10 % off coupon if u order from amazon "2ZDlV2W5"
Never heard of iSheldz, but if you can, go in store and see if they have any demos to get a feel of it. If it feels like rubber, then well, it's your call. I don't like that rubber feeling and went with Realook. Realook is like a piece of plastic per say. You don't have that rubber feeling and after awhile, it will feel just like the naked screen, for me anyways.
Your call.
I'm in the market for a screen protector too. I heard Realook is better than iShields but, I like the rubber feel better.
Anybody with Realook, is the installation easy?
Is Realook installation easy?
For me it was not very easy, and not very difficult. I got frustrated initially by dust particles (which for me were impossible to avoid) causing bubbles. The key turned out to be using scotch tape to remove individual spots from the underside of the film (which is exactly what the directions suggest).
The other trick was getting the positioning exactly right. The fit is quite precise, so 1/4mm off on the angle and it will run off the side of the glass at the bottom. I ended up using a piece of tape on the top surface of the film at both the top and bottom to help in both lifting it to remove dust particles and to get the positioning just right.
It's a dry application, which makes it less dangerous as far as getting liquid in the phone, but you can't slide the film around to position it.
The end result though is well worth the 10-15 minutes of effort it took me. It's probably as close to the original glass look and feel as is possible.
I took an advice from another user here saying to run hot water in the bathroom so that it will be filled with steam and result in less dust in the air. I did just that. Took a shower and then immediately started to apply the screen protector. Took me two tries. Make sure to have scotch tape ready so you could peel it off if you messed up.

Probably want to keep the tape out of the bathroom when your taking the shower to ensure the proper adhesiveness.
iShieldz look like Zagg lite, they feel like Zagg kinda sticky and after a few weeks they make the screen look like crap.
My vote is for Realook...
Just be patient and do it in a place where you are not going to be disturbed for the few minutes it will take to get it on perfectly. Doesn't even look or feel like it's there. You'll love it and you get two for the price.
real look it looks amazing and very easy to install ...
I use Realook and didn't find it to be terribly hard to install. It's the best looking I've ever seen and it's smooth, so there's no finger friction on the touch screen, which is a requirement for me (Swype user). If I were going to do it all over again I'd definitely go with the Realook again. I can't imagine anything better.
I somehow got a nasty scratch on my realook today. I really don't know how. But I want to cry lol better that than my phone I guess

wow I ordered a realook screen protector, amazon said a delivery date on the 20th, I got it 2 days after I ordered it. It was hard as hell to install, I got dirt and fingerprints all over my first one, then I tried the other, took my time, had allot of dust on the screen causing bubbles, got some scotch tape and slid it under neath and took off the lint all over it after I washed it with water, sqeegeed it on, it was tedious but it doesnt look like I even have one on it, freakn amazing, next time i put one on it'll be much easier. First time took a while lol
Realook suggests to spray some water in the area that you are going to apply the SP to cut down on dust. I sat under a ceiling fan, on low, when I put mine on. Just take your time when applying it and you will be happy with it. I am with mine .

Screen protectors...

Are they really that necessary? I had my hero for a while without one and never had a problem. I'm just saying, because I got the invisible shield one and now it sucks. For a couple months its cool, but after a while they just make my screen look ****ty. Peeling off one corner. And it looks like when I first attempted to put it on particles in the air, dust, etcetera stuck to it. There's no avoiding that. At a certain angle you can see the little particles. Its really lame I think I'm about to Peel this crap off.
Does anyone use on?

The evo screen is much more durable than the hero screen was.
I used a zagg on my evo for several months but after seeing how much it was taking away from my "viewing pleasure" I took it off and haven't looked back. I actually dropped and cracked the corner of my evo a while back and before I sent it back I TRIED to scratch the screen with keys, knives, razor blades, rocks.. I literally couldn't scratch it. I'm sure a diamond ring would do the job but at this point, imo, no screen protector is worth the money or detracting from screen clarity.
I had an invisible shield for months and was able to live with it until it just got too nasty to look at... Had it off for a couple weeks now and can honestly say I should've saved my money and left it on the rack... just my .02
I've had an invisible shield since september, and had best buy install it. It looks great, but it feels weird to the touch. I was really paranoid about the seen getting ugly, but from what I've read, there's really nothing to worry about. My friend got rid of her shield after she ruined it, and she's pretty happy with it bare.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
So to add to the OP I would also like to ask those of you that go bare, do you keep your phone in your pants pocket? Does it get scratched by keys, change, etc. when taking it out or putting it back in your pocket? The reason I ask is because I use InvisibleShield and when it starts to look like crap I pay the $2.99 shipping and they send me a new one as long as I send the old one back within 60 days there are no other charges. I am on my 3rd InvisibleShield on my EVO now, but I would seriously consider going bare if it is truly that hard to scratch the screen. Thanks.
It is truly hard to scratch the screen. I've had a bare screen on my Evo forever and I can't imagine it otherwise. Dropping it and cracking the screen is another story
Bare since day one and zero scratches. I carry my keys in a different pocket tho.

I would recommend the Realook screen protectors. You can hardly tell it's even there. You have to be really careful when you install them. Smallest piece of dirt under them will really mess it up. I got my EVO at launch and just recently added the screen protector. I had a few scratches but nothing major.
I just bought a couple sets of these
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Screen-Protector-for-HTC-EVO-4G-Pack-of-2/5497913/product.html
I've had a screen protector on my EVO since I got it on launch day. I had the Zagg on there for a little while but I hated the way it felt and it started to turn yellow after only about a month. I had several other protectors I bought from Sprint and such but when I got my Commuter case I put the Otterbox protector on there and I've had it on since. My Otterbox protector was starting to get a bit scratched up so I was looking for something to replace it. I got an email from Overstock telling me that I had $10 credit so I went to look and see what they had. The protectors I got had a very good rating and I have to agree, these are the best I've had on my phone so far. They are very smooth and clear, good stiffness and thickness on the plastic so I think they'll hold up well. Best of all, only $5 for 2 of them, you really can't beat that price. I don't know if you really need a protector but I'm ultra paranoid and I just like the security of knowing it's on there.
I use one for sure but it does take away from viewing. Pretty scratched up now so I will probably replace. Not looking forward to installing and trying to get dust free, I am very picky so it takes me much time to get it right.
I did buy the Zagg Invisishield, however I never installed it. I just couldn't get it right and ended up making the screen protector look like crap.
Needless to say, after 9 months of having no "shield" I did finally get a small scratch. This is after bouncing my phone off of pavement, blacktop, hardwood floors, and carpet. The scratch is unnoticeable unless you're at the right viewing angle, and you can't feel it unless you actually search for it with your finger nail. My phone does have 2 cracks (Power button & volume down rocker) and the corners are pretty chipped.
Gotta love that Gorilla Glass.

I'm pretty picky as well. I had a couple chunks of dust under mine after installing it last night and I just used a piece of tape to lift a corner and another to get the dust out, worked great. Installation with the protectors I linked above took about 15min.

I got some on Amazon for 50 cents a piece. (6 pack for $3) They are the crystal clear ones, so you can't really even tell it's there. At that price, I will definitely use them. I wouldn't pay the insane prices that Zagg or some of the others charge though.

Screen Protector or No Screen Protector?

I got my GNex the day of release and since day one I have had a screen protector on it.
I used the cheap Verizon ones temporarily, and purchased an invisible shield about a week later.
I really like the invisible shield, its lasted me this whole time. From December to April with no issues. It was clean looking. It did have a little bit of the "orange peel" effect, but I didn't mind it.
But its starting to get a little bit worn, dirt starting collecting around the edges of the screen protector, and won't come out. Its also got little fine surface scratches from me cleaning the screen......
So my question is, who here is using their GNex Naked?
Im thinking about taking my invisible shield off now,
But im just worried that the glossy black front of the phone will start to get little fine surface scratches from pocketing/cleaning.
I know that the screens are not suppose to scratch easily, but its the little fine hair like scratches that appear over time from use / cleaning that bother me to no end.
Anyone using their GNex Naked care to chime in on how well the screen is holding up? How about the glossy black above and underneath the screen?

Honestly, wouldn't risk it.
When you have that tiny grain of sand or something in your pocket and your phone is with it. That is just enough to scratch it and just make you OCD and annoyed with the screen because of that one scratch you always see.
Just put on a quality screen protector. I put an XO skins on mine and it's been good so far.
I used it from half of January until now. Collected my fist scratch a week ago, even though I treat it with extreme care. It is not very visible but still. I would recommend one.

I would use a screen protector just to not take the risk of the screen getting scratched. Because if those tiny little scratches bother you, imagine what'll happen when you get a big scratch on your screen. You'll regret it. I, and many others here would recommend XO Skin's. It's a really good screen protector and I'd say give it a chance.

I've never put my phone into trouser pockets. It always goes into a suit jacket pocket on its own - without any other items in the pocket. Despite this, I have a curved scratch on the screen that becomes noticeable in bright environments.
So, if a scratch will bother you greatly, you'll definitely want a screen protector.
I put protectors on all my phone's screens before use them. On my old iphone 3gs one from power support saved my glass from a 1.5 meters fall, protector broken but screen untouched.
Ran mine about a week without one until my case and protector came in...was extremely careful and no scratches thankfully.
It's like having a home alarm system. No one gets them until their house has already been broken into. For how cheap they are...it's cheap insurance since it's much harder to repair a scratch than replace a screen protector.
if small scratches that can only be seen when the screen is off and clean bothers you then use a screen protector. The galaxy nexus's Oleophobic coating will get these tiny scratches without one. the screen feels much nicer without one, try it for a day when you plan to switch up the screen protectors and you will see what you are missing out on.
I peel mine off. Was too slippery, got easily scratched with microscratches, looked greasy. Bleh. The screen is great and durable, has that nice oleophobic coating; the glass is strong enough, a protector isn't needed anymore on phones for regular, they're not plastic screens.
Now if you work in construction or other particle heaven environment, by all means get a protector.
Mines naked and I have zero scratches from slipping it in and out of my pocket! And trust me...I clean the screen and look under a light to check! Lol

Picked up 10 good protectors from ebay for like 5 quid.
Get greasy, wipe on your trousers, get scratched, put a new one on.

I'm actually looking for a very basic, as-clear-as-possible, and non-water base screen protector. I hear the basic ones from Verizon do just fine (not anti-glare ones)? I may go with those.
What exactly are you protecting the screen from? From looking bad? If isn't for resale value, then what on Earth justifies tainting the display of a phone's screen with a piece of plastic that worsens the clarity and collects dust, fingerprints and oil?
I'd spend the money on addressing the OCD. Just get the first scratch out of the way and be done with it. It's pretty liberating to not walk around as if you are babysitting fine china in your pocket.
I highly recommend Steinhall Oleophobic screen protectors.
With a good install, it is hard to even tell its in there. Very clear, and the feel of it is better than any others I've used. Almost as good as glass.

Completely clear, couldn't notice there was one on, some rainbow effect not much, Covered pretty much the whole screen. The only slight issue was that the bottom right corner did not adhere so it was off about 1mm. .
Currently I have the XO on there still waiting for 2 bubbles to dry out, almost no orange peel, but I can tell it has effected the visibility a bit. Overall pretty happy.

no screen protector here and i've been using this phone for 2 months without a scratch. It's always all by himself in my left pocket and I dont feel worried about getting a scratch.
If you want a screen protector and you'd feel better with one I suggest you the Tru brand, the feeling is really nice compared to the other brands out there that I see at my workplace...
I'm the complete opposite of you. I purchased my nexus the week it came out and refused to put a screen protector on up until 2weeks ago. Was talked into trying one by a coworker. In those 3.5 months I've never had a single scratch. I'm a little OCD about having a perfect screen. Free of scratches and clean of fingerprints and dirt. I ended up throwing on a cheap verizon one thinking I'd be pulling it off very shortly after applying it. After putting it on damn near perfect, I started to like it. Color distortion was farely minimal and I wasn't wiping fingerprints every 20 minutes. That in itself is worth the screen protector. The protection to me is the added bonus..... I really hate fingerprints. Lol

Anyone got scratches on their screen WITHOUT protector?

Hey guys.
I bought around 4-5 cases for my HTC one so far. but in the end, NOTHING beats the HTC one naked in your hand, so i bought an invisibleshield protector for it .
But i dont like the screen protector. so im wondering, people using the phone with no screen protector, have you got any scratches on it? or does the Gorilla glass really work?
It works to a certain extent. Gorilla Glass is rated about 5-6H hardness. That will save you from most metals. Sand/stones will definitely scratch the glass as they can contain Quartz, which is 7H. Glas.t is rated for 8-9H so even those won't scratch it.
No scratches on mine so far. Like the poster above said, just watch out for certain sand/minerals cause they are hard enough to scratch the screen.
My last phone had GG as well, dont remember if it was 1 or 2, but it had a bunch of tiny scratches in one spot, turns out it was my earring (which is made of quartz) scratching it every time i used it.
So now I only answer my phone with my right hand lol, since my left ear is pierced.
I got mine about a month ago, and I still didnt get a screen protector..
no scratches yet..
I have a case but no screen protector. I'm not sure how but I have a very small scratch on my screen
Running naked for a couple of months. Not one single scratch. Most durable screen I have had on a phone.

I would suggest the Glas.tr. It feels fantastic, doesn't scratch or get fingerprints on it.
Looks great and works with almost any case because of the rounded edges.

I got two scratches. Don't even know how I got them.

No scratches and no screen protector. Common sense here people. Dont put your phone in your pocket with your keys, etc...
Can say.
I put a screen protector on my phones and devices day one after opening.
Better safe then sorry you know.

Actually, keys cant scratch your screen. The metals they're made of are too soft compared to GG.
Its sand and rocks that will scratch up your phone if they ever find a way into your pockets. in other words.. better be careful at the beach.
They get into your pocket anyway, even some particals of dirt on flooring at hard enough to cause scratches. When I get my one ill probably get the glas screen protectors and take off after a month or 2

Keep your phone in its own pocket with nothing else in it and don't lay it face down and rub it all over **** and you'll be fine. I've had four android phones so far, never used a screen protector, and never got a scratch on any of them.

I'm not too sure as to how I got my scratches either but I do have two on the screen. I usually keep my phone in it's own pocket or at most it would be with my car key fob which shouldn't scratch it.. But otherwise I think it's just from normal use, maybe some sand or something. Thinking about jumping on the Glas.tr protector though.
It might well be alright without a protector; the glass is certainly quite resilient, and what others say is quite true-- short of sand, quartz, and other hard minerals, you're usually good to go. My problem is just that you never know when that kind of muck get get into your pocket, or onto a table, or anywhere. More importantly for me is keeping the screen clean from fingerprints and other gunk, so I picked up a matte screen protector just now and I am incredibly pleased with it.
I previously tried a Spiegen SGP UltraCrystal, but although it was unbelievably clear (indeed, many people who handled the phone were astonished to learn that there was a screen protector on the device at all), it picked up fingerprints like nobody's business. I was quite disappointed, especially after the huge success of my Armorsuit Militaryshield for my Galaxy Nexus. But matte is definitely the way to go.
Spigen makes a nice screen cover that's glass itself haven't tried it personally but about ready to.

I used some Matte protectors off ebay , but they were crap, they took away all the qaulity of the screen. I personally do prefer matte ones, but cant find any decent ones.
bought this one, if its german it must be good lol.

Got a small scratch on the top right part of the screen. Noticed it after 6 days of use with a tpu case and no screen protector. But I don't like screen protectors, got myself a spigen leather flip case which protects the screen when I kept my phone in pocket. Looking for a spigen glast, as I can't get it right away from US.

It'll get stratches which CANT BE seen by naked eye, only when exposed to direct light. So if you are okay with it don't use protector.
