[request]Possible to get kindle default reader on rooted Fire? - Kindle Fire Android Development

One of the main reasons i continue flashing back to the stock rom is because of the awful reader apps. Is it possible to get the stock reader flashed over?

Sure.
TiBu then flash to a good ROM and restore the crappy delivered kindle app.
Or, keep your good ROM and download the kindle app from Amazon market.

I know recently someone discovered that the "Web" link in the stock rom (Silk) is actually a .apk. I wonder if its something similar for the reader. I know that took quite a bit of work to port over though and most of the devs around now are working on the ICS port. You interested in getting you hands dirty here or are you requesting someone else to look into it?

Making the stock kindle reader is always good to have, however...I would suggest you all to try this e reader: Mantano Reader.
It also reads epubs!

+1 on Mantano Reader. I use this and also HIGHLY recommend it as it has options close to that of the one you used in stock kindle launcher.

Here's a list of the preinstalled apps on the stock 6.2.1 rom. I tried installing KindleForOtter.apk on CM7, but it doesn't run. It probably depends on one (or more) of the other apps. Extract the bin file and look in /system/app to try some of these on CM7.

I personally would rather use the Kindle app from the Market, the stock Kindle app is too finicky when it comes to books you put on the device yourself.

The kindle app in CM9/ICS is almost the same as a the stock kindle app, its gorgeous and easy to use. If you dont care about not having sound then you may want to use ICS.

That's good to know. I had no idea the kindle app in ICS was different from the one in Gingerbread. I may be getting my ICS flash on tonight.

That right there is why I won't move to ICS yet. Looks like amazon just hasn't updated the Kindle app for ICS, and some features are disabled, like the margin settings. Ugh.

I notice you are rooted. How did you get the stock kindle reader app back on there? I can't seem to make it work and my wife can't access the kindle owners lending library and it shows being registered as 'xxx android' rather than 'xxx kindle fire'.

I copied all of the missing libs from the stock rom and put them in my lib folder on ics along with a few apks. The launcher opens and lists books and apps and whatnot. However, with what I'm working with right now, it cannot read books and is highly prone to crashing the whole tab.
It seems highly possible and maybe not even that difficult to do but I'm not really sure where to go from here. I guess I'll see if a logcat could give me a tip....

I don't understand this question. I've been rooted since the first day I got this kindle. We've always used it for the eReader app.
Just don't flash that cyanogen nonsense and you'll be fine. You take the "kindle" out of the kindle with that kind of stuff. That said, when ICS stabilizes enough for full functional use (HW decoding, full lib support, all audio/kernel functions intact, all stock recognition faked properly, etc), it would make a very compelling switch. Until then, why shoot yourself in the foot?
Rooting is fine -- just keep the stock ROM on there. Don't change it. Just install market and even a different launcher if you absolutely abhor the stock layout, and you're free. No weird bugs, no limitations, the best of all worlds. Well, at least Amazon's world -- and the freedom to tinker freely in Google's as well. I use modaco's ROM now with a restore from stock. Works great too since it's based on the stock ROM with tweaked recognition.

Is there a way to get to the kindle lending library while using a non kindle device? I have a prime membership, and I'd really like to take advantage of the lending library, but I do not like the Kindle ROM on the fire.

What is the difference between stock Kindle and Kindle in Android Market ????

Kindle Fire Reader on ICS?

Hey guys, just a quick question. I really like the format of the Kindle Fire Reader but I prefer ICS. Does anyone know how I can get the same format kindle app on the ICS rom that was released?
There is a big difference in my opinion. The one that I download on ICS has all kinds of weird spacings and other odd things where the original app for the kindle fire has perfect spacing. I tried doing a titanium backup of it and bringing it over to ICS but i had no dice.
Any ideas as to what I would need to do to bring it over to the ICS rom?
Great question, Im wondering the same thing. Subscribed.
Agreed, the stock reader is great. My only two gripes are you can't change the fonts and colors, except for the three background options, and two, I'd love a page turn animation like iBooks has.
Could that be incorporated into the existing build, or it would have to be a completely different app all together?
Im not sure, but I am hoping that someone looks @ this and figures out how to get the app over because I love ICS and but can't stand the app that's in there.
I would start a [request] thread in the developer thread if I had over 10 posts
The reader app is integrated into the launcher, and most likely not able to port. You cannot choose a book from in it. When I had stock with ADW Launcher, I had to run the stock launcher if I wanted to read a different book.

try cool reader, it's pretty nifty with a bunch of features. I really love the kindle reader app on stock too, it's what is keeping me from ics, but when I do mess around with ICS for a good amount of time, I use Cool Reader and I like it a lot.

I purchase my books from Amazon and I have a Kindle as well so I'd like to use the Kindle app for features like page and highlight syncing and book extras.
Okay, I'm a little confused (surprise surprise) but how is the "stock" reader different from the Kindle Reader app you can download from the market? I do most of my eReading on a Kindle Touch because of the ePaper, but I can see myself wanting to look at color books on the Fire some day. I thought the apps are pretty much the same?
EDIT: Wait...just tried the Kindle app under ICS...very different. Wow...it used to be almost the same, but wow...they really changed since the last time I loaded this thing on a tablet.
If anyone has the stock app somewhere, I can take a crack at making it work. I'm not a OS dev type which is why I have to use ROMs other people make, but I'm a decent hacker and have written a few complex Android apps as well. Maybe I can figure something out.

EDIT: Okay, I screwed up. I don't have the free Oxford Dictionary anymore. I have a dictionary I paid for and all other paid items. Perhaps the Oxford one is only something they make available for actual Kindle devices which technically our Fire's are not if we put a custom ROM on them.

I wouldn't mind a Kindle app that was like the OEM Kindle Fire interface, but able to be quit, like an app should. The cover flow was pretty cool, but I needed more than the default Kindle Fire implementation could give me.

want to flash rom to my Kindle Fire, what will i loose

like the title says, i have a KF and want to put either ICS or JB on it, but wondering what Amazon stuff i will loose or wont be able to access
i know i will loose the kindle lending library function but dont really use it anyway, but my daughter watches movies and we have prime. i tried pulling up a movie through the web browser but it says the Fire can't play HD movies and when you select to watch the SD version it wants to open the Fire movie app. is that available as an apk to push after i flash a rom to it? or do i just need flash to play it online?
anything else i will loose
From what I understand you will definitely loose access to Prime.
You will also lose your e-books but you can reload those with the kindle app once you have the new rom installed.
I hated stock on the kindle fire, I recently rooted and am now running AlienDroid version 2.0 and I cannot put the thing down.
If losing Prime access is a deal breaker than dont do it.

I lost access to the Amazon App Store, and all of the apps that I got through it refuse to launch. I tried to install the android version of AAS and it would not install. I also could not install the Kindle for Android app.
yeah i think those are deal breakers for me. prime is nice with the free videos and free shipping, i use that all the time. guess i'll just keep it as is

Kindle Fire Amazon app store

I have the Amazon app store that comes preloaded on the kf, but it won't install on cm10. I don't have the Google nexus hack of anything. I was just wondering why it doesn't work, if someone has gotten it to work, or if someone can get it to work.

Retrying. I put in the wrong directory.
The original probably requires custom amazon libraries that aren't available on cm10. As far as I know, no stock kf software works on custom roms for this reason. I have no issues using the amazon app store apk from amazon's website, though.

Is there something I can look for in the log?
Now apks gotten from Amazon app store work, and the message that "Unfortunately, Appstore had stopped" pops up, where as before I installed it as a system app, it wouldn't run apps pulled from the Amazon store.
Just thought I would say this in case it helps.
Try this it has never failed to work for me on any system or device http://db.tt/MObKmXFE . First uninstall the one you have then install this one, it will prompt to update itself eventually which is fine. If you flash ROMs like I do or you are using it on many devices periodically you must log on to your account and remove excess devices, deregister and reregister. Nothing else needed to get it to work it's just a simple as installing. Good luck.
Edit: don't let it update the recent appstore update doesn't act right just use the one I provided.

I get all my stuff from the cloud just fine as far as being kindle specific I don't really care but I would assume they are. It's a piece of cake removing a system app just use root explorer mount system/app r/w and delete the apk from the system/app and then mount r/o and restart. Root unistaller can perform the same task. Just be careful not to remove anything that may be needed to run the system smoothly. Making an app system is done in the reverse order by adding the apk to system/app in a r/w mode. It will install a restart as a system application.

Even if you installed the original kindle fire appstore, you probably won't be able to install kindle only apps.
The build.prop is different and you need the Amazon framework from the original ROM. The best thing you could do is revert back to stock. Back up the apps, THEN switch to whatever rom you are currently on.

"Please build this app for amazon/kindle" error

I got a couple of Kindle Fires for my kids, and Installed the Play store. Most apps that I had paid for in the Play store work just fine, but on a few I get this error when launching them. Obviously I'm hoping to avoid having to re-buy apps on the Amazon Market. I'm just wondering if there are some build.prop edits or something that may fix this issue. I realize I could flash a CM10 rom, but I was going to try to keep the kf OS to take advantage of prime, and some exclusive kids apps on the kf. Seems like there are a lot of developers of kids games that are only publishing apps for the kf devices. I'm guessing because kindle fires are a little more kid friendly especially with the new FreeTime feature on the newer versions.
I don't know if there is a work around on the stock os, but what you could do is backup all the kindle apps that you have, and flash cm10 or 10.1. You would need to install Amazon's appstore to use them, but you don't need the kindle-specific version; just the one you can download. There is a thread on here that talks about getting Prime videos working, but I don't know if that would work. There are a ton of apps that will backup apps, but a popular one is titanium backup.

I suppose I can give that a try. I just assume that some of the Kindle fire specific apps like the Dora ABC volume 1 won't work without the Kindle fire OS.
They still work. I can speak from experience. I backed up quite a few kindle-specific apps and they worked.
I guess I can't guarantee their workability, because some might not work, but for the most part, they should work.

I just tried with a couple apps and restored them on my phone. First tried Toca Hair Salon (exclusive kf app), and surprisingly it did work. The other I tried was the Dora ABC volume 1, and that didn't work. It didn't even have the correct icon. The Dora app does use whisper sync game circle, though. So it may be because it depends on those stock apps being present. Do you know if you've tried with any of these kind of apps? I still need to try restoring it on an actual kf running 4.2 and not my phone, but I just tried for a quick test.

I just installed cm10 on my 2nd kf, restored the Dora app, and it did work. I also tried on my nexus 7 and it worked too. So, the app is not compatible with my phone I guess.
However, I tried a few of the apps that were giving the error message in the title of this thread, and they still give the same error in cm10. So, it seems the error is within the app, but strange multiple apps from different developers have the same message.

I tried this one. It didn't work at first, but then I changed the manufacturer from Amazon to Google and the model or whatever it is from Amazon Kindle Fire to Nexus 7 all manually. I rebooted, and launched the app and it worked just fine. So there's a work around that I would guess works for all/most apps like this.
-edit-
I just reset the manufacturer to Amazon and it still worked with a "nexus 7" device. But I went back to kindle fire as the device and it didn't work again. I didn't even notice till now, but it changed my signature to nexus 7 while I had that modded.

Big thanks! That does work. I didn't think it would be that simple. For Super Why I had to change both the model and the manufacturer. Now I think all my apps are working. Thanks a lot.
When I was searching out this error, I saw developers discussing this message on a cross-platform development software called Carona. It must be something that it adds automatically depending on the build options. This would explain why different apps have the same error message. I'm guessing all these apps were developed using this software.

[Q] Rooted Kindle Apps do not show up in home>apps

Hi,
Last month I rooted my Kindle. I decided to give it to my girlfriend to use but (for obvious reasons deregistered it from my Amazon account). Now after it has been deregistered she is unable to get the apps that i had on there (she has registered her own amazon account). The apps are still on there after a little exploring i did on ES explorer. They will not show up under home>apps where all the other apps are. Root access was not removed from this Kindle but the Superuser icon and Google Play Store icons were (along with the rest of the apps i downloaded from Google Play Store). I can still use the apps if I go into ES Explorer under Tools> App Manager and click on the app it will give me an option to open and it works just fine. I just opened up Google Play Store and downloaded the "Craigslist" app and it shows up under the apps page. It is just very inconvenient to do it this way and I want to know if anyone has any idea what is going on. I am completely lost!
Thank you!
Have u tried using an alternate launcher like go launcher HD? For the record, you can not just simply install alternate launchers from the play store and have them work out of the box, minus the exception of using other ROMs like kinology or cm. You would have to copy installed apk from
/data/app to /system/app and fix its permissions to avoid boot loop. I advise using something like kindle fire first aid or a app called kindle free for it though. Also thought I'd mention if you choose this route and are on amazon is x.4.1 or higher, you won't be able to set the background, I made a fix for that. If you decide to try using an alternate launcher, I'll send u a link to it, word to the wise though, if you choose to use an alternate launcher it is advised to run my wallpaper fix first or your system partition may run out of disk space and be unable to complete the fix. I really need to put my wallpaper fix in my signature... Anyways post back if you would like to try this.
Also thought I'd mention the apps are probably not showing up because of ownership issues, just a guess though, because I tried to run a free app from my mom's kindle 1st gen on mine and it refused to even open saying I didn't own it... Free app... Irony... Anyways that's just a guess, I'd love to test this theory using my moms account on this kindle but I currently have cm 10.1 installed so I can't without reflashing.

Hi,
Thank you for the response! My Kindle is running 8.4.3. I am thinking of just doing a factory reset and re rooting it because i have the program all set up on my computer, just need to re run the program. Then i will have a clean slate to work with. If my logic is correct i should be able to just start from scratch again which is relatively easy compared to finding a new solution. Let me know what you think.
Thank you
I'm confused, wouldn't you still need to login to your account to re download stuff from the cloud causing the problem all over again?

Amazon cloud works great. My girlfriend has her own account and can download any of the apps she wants off of there. The problem is that the icons dont show up for Superuser or Google Play Store. I can still use Superuser but i cannot touch the app icon to go into it but i know its still running because Titanium Backup was asking for its permission. Also when i go into Google Play Store i am able to download apps and have them appear on my kindle apps page but the original Google Play Store is not there so i have to go into ES Explorer to access Google Play (im trying to make it easier for her by having the Icon for Google Play Store on the home app page). I am having issues with Google Play and Superuser (which isnt a big deal that i cant touch the app to open it) but Google Play Store i would like to show up on the main page.

Oh OK I get what your saying now, that is strange, I'm starting to wonder if I misunderstood you from the beginning. Yea if doing a restore still for some weird reason doesn't fix it just use an alternate ui, I kinda don't like the carousel anymore myself after flashing a normal android os on mine, but restoring the os should work.
