like the title says, i have a KF and want to put either ICS or JB on it, but wondering what Amazon stuff i will loose or wont be able to access
i know i will loose the kindle lending library function but dont really use it anyway, but my daughter watches movies and we have prime. i tried pulling up a movie through the web browser but it says the Fire can't play HD movies and when you select to watch the SD version it wants to open the Fire movie app. is that available as an apk to push after i flash a rom to it? or do i just need flash to play it online?
anything else i will loose
From what I understand you will definitely loose access to Prime.
You will also lose your e-books but you can reload those with the kindle app once you have the new rom installed.
I hated stock on the kindle fire, I recently rooted and am now running AlienDroid version 2.0 and I cannot put the thing down.
If losing Prime access is a deal breaker than dont do it.

None of my Amazon apps work since I rooted my KF.
I lost access to the Amazon App Store, and all of the apps that I got through it refuse to launch. I tried to install the android version of AAS and it would not install. I also could not install the Kindle for Android app.
yeah i think those are deal breakers for me. prime is nice with the free videos and free shipping, i use that all the time. guess i'll just keep it as is
thanks

well we got an external keyboard as well and those only work with an OTG cable on custom roms, not stock fire, so it was more than just rooting it

Hi there everyone from Kindle Fire XDA Forum
I've been here for a while trying to figure out how exactly the Kindle Fire amazon's interface works, but i still have some questions, so, here they are.
1 - Do i need root in order to install google play ?
2 - Once i get to google play, everything will be just like any other android tablet / phone ? I mean, will i be able to install all the apps i already bought and etc ?
3 - Whats the easiest way to root my kindle fire ?
4 - I am planing to pay for Amazon Prime for a year or so, so flashing CM9 would not be an option. But, in case i change my mind, is it a Good choice for using at the Kindle Fire ? I mean, losing access to the whole Amazon's ecosystem would be a great downside, right ?
5 - Can i use the Built-in Amazon App Store if i am not from US ? I am from Brasil, and i have an international credit card (but it is not FROM US).
6 - What i should NOT do in terms of Flashing, trying roms and etc ?
Thank in advance

1. Yes, you need root.
2. Yes, you will have full acess to the market just like a regular android phone.
3. Use the Kindle fire utility. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?=1399889
4. Prime really isn't worth it. And there are workarounds as to using Amazon video on cm9. I am running cm9 right now and have full access to amazon's services (appstore, video, etc.)
5. Yes, you will be able to access the appstore.
6. Do not try and do things on your own. Always ask questions about the rom, even if you think you know what your doing. Always make backups.
Ihope I answered your questions.

I am using the prime streaming video service.
For doing so, i downloaded the Vodoo app to unroot and another app for allowing me to see videos worldwide, since i am from brasil, and they do not support my country.

i have the videos app and the unroot app, however the video app just force closes whenever i try to watch anything. I assume because i have not entered any information in as to what my amazon account is.
is there a workaround for this?
So, I kinda need to buy my father an E-book machine. I thought kindle fire was the best. However, since I am in Korea atm and read some **** that the Amazon content don't work properly outside the US I just wanted to know exactly what works and what doesn't. Also, if I flash for instance, CM9, will I somehow be able to download Amazon ebooks and mags onto it??
Thanks in advance!

Yes, I'm using my Kindle Fire here in the Philippines. I'm running a custom ROM (I recommend gedeROM) and I installed the Amazon Kindle app from the Google Play Store. Works exactly like the default ebook/magazines app in the stock Amazon ROM. Basically, books and magazines will definitely work on a rooted KF used outside the US. I don't think Amazon video streaming would work though.
I'm using one in Vietnam. It's a great e-reader and a good tablet. I have all apps and stuffs I want but the Amazon appstore is not working in my country. It is not my problem...

I have the Amazon app store that comes preloaded on the kf, but it won't install on cm10. I don't have the Google nexus hack of anything. I was just wondering why it doesn't work, if someone has gotten it to work, or if someone can get it to work.
Here's a link to the app. Sorry I couldn't straight upload.

Do you know why the original doesn't work?
I'll try that and come back with results
I couldn't get past the third line.
Retrying. I put in the wrong directory.
The original probably requires custom amazon libraries that aren't available on cm10. As far as I know, no stock kf software works on custom roms for this reason. I have no issues using the amazon app store apk from amazon's website, though.

There's a system error when launching it.
I put it up on pastebin.

I started and stopped before and after launching, but it looks like there might be some fluff on it too. I used Gemini Live logcat.

Is there something I can look for in the log?
Now apks gotten from Amazon app store work, and the message that "Unfortunately, Appstore had stopped" pops up, where as before I installed it as a system app, it wouldn't run apps pulled from the Amazon store.
Just thought I would say this in case it helps.
Try this it has never failed to work for me on any system or device http://db.tt/MObKmXFE . First uninstall the one you have then install this one, it will prompt to update itself eventually which is fine. If you flash ROMs like I do or you are using it on many devices periodically you must log on to your account and remove excess devices, deregister and reregister. Nothing else needed to get it to work it's just a simple as installing. Good luck.
Edit: don't let it update the recent appstore update doesn't act right just use the one I provided.

It's not a matter of getting Amazon appstore to work for me. I know the others work. I just really want this one because with it you can get kindle specific apps. Does yours let you get kindle specific apps?

I get all my stuff from the cloud just fine as far as being kindle specific I don't really care but I would assume they are. It's a piece of cake removing a system app just use root explorer mount system/app r/w and delete the apk from the system/app and then mount r/o and restart. Root unistaller can perform the same task. Just be careful not to remove anything that may be needed to run the system smoothly. Making an app system is done in the reverse order by adding the apk to system/app in a r/w mode. It will install a restart as a system application.

Even if you installed the original kindle fire appstore, you probably won't be able to install kindle only apps.
The build.prop is different and you need the Amazon framework from the original ROM. The best thing you could do is revert back to stock. Back up the apps, THEN switch to whatever rom you are currently on.

I got a couple of Kindle Fires for my kids, and Installed the Play store. Most apps that I had paid for in the Play store work just fine, but on a few I get this error when launching them. Obviously I'm hoping to avoid having to re-buy apps on the Amazon Market. I'm just wondering if there are some build.prop edits or something that may fix this issue. I realize I could flash a CM10 rom, but I was going to try to keep the kf OS to take advantage of prime, and some exclusive kids apps on the kf. Seems like there are a lot of developers of kids games that are only publishing apps for the kf devices. I'm guessing because kindle fires are a little more kid friendly especially with the new FreeTime feature on the newer versions.
I don't know if there is a work around on the stock os, but what you could do is backup all the kindle apps that you have, and flash cm10 or 10.1. You would need to install Amazon's appstore to use them, but you don't need the kindle-specific version; just the one you can download. There is a thread on here that talks about getting Prime videos working, but I don't know if that would work. There are a ton of apps that will backup apps, but a popular one is titanium backup.

I suppose I can give that a try. I just assume that some of the Kindle fire specific apps like the Dora ABC volume 1 won't work without the Kindle fire OS.
They still work. I can speak from experience. I backed up quite a few kindle-specific apps and they worked.
I guess I can't guarantee their workability, because some might not work, but for the most part, they should work.

I just tried with a couple apps and restored them on my phone. First tried Toca Hair Salon (exclusive kf app), and surprisingly it did work. The other I tried was the Dora ABC volume 1, and that didn't work. It didn't even have the correct icon. The Dora app does use whisper sync game circle, though. So it may be because it depends on those stock apps being present. Do you know if you've tried with any of these kind of apps? I still need to try restoring it on an actual kf running 4.2 and not my phone, but I just tried for a quick test.
I can't tell you about an app like that, but if you up the apk, I will try.

I just installed cm10 on my 2nd kf, restored the Dora app, and it did work. I also tried on my nexus 7 and it worked too. So, the app is not compatible with my phone I guess.
However, I tried a few of the apps that were giving the error message in the title of this thread, and they still give the same error in cm10. So, it seems the error is within the app, but strange multiple apps from different developers have the same message.

Some free ones you can try:
Space Jigsaw Puzzle or any other free app from Wombi. The space jigsaw puzzle is available for free from the Amazon store as well, which that one works on the kf.

Sight Words Games Lite

Snow white interactive book

The paid Super Why game from the play store also produces this error, but other PBS Kids apps like Daniel Tiger and Fresh Pick do not.

I tried this one. It didn't work at first, but then I changed the manufacturer from Amazon to Google and the model or whatever it is from Amazon Kindle Fire to Nexus 7 all manually. I rebooted, and launched the app and it worked just fine. So there's a work around that I would guess works for all/most apps like this.
-edit-
I just reset the manufacturer to Amazon and it still worked with a "nexus 7" device. But I went back to kindle fire as the device and it didn't work again. I didn't even notice till now, but it changed my signature to nexus 7 while I had that modded.

Big thanks! That does work. I didn't think it would be that simple. For Super Why I had to change both the model and the manufacturer. Now I think all my apps are working. Thanks a lot.
When I was searching out this error, I saw developers discussing this message on a cross-platform development software called Carona. It must be something that it adds automatically depending on the build options. This would explain why different apps have the same error message. I'm guessing all these apps were developed using this software.
I am interested in the new Fire TV firmware since it has a new Netflix app and can be used as a Miracast receiver. However, I am currently rooted (and not sure if I need to be). The only non-official app I currently use is XBMC. Do I need to be rooted to use that? How do I update to the new firmware without losing root?

I would recommend against removing root as that would be sacrilegious to the Fire TV. Follow the How to install a Custom ROM Image on the Amazon Fire TV guide as it gives detailed instructions on how to receive the latest Pre-Rooted Stock Software. The newest update does include the new Netflix app and Miracast support. And trust me, rooting is the best thing to ever happen to the Fire TV.
I'm sure that someone that has a non rootable fire tv will be willing to trade with you

This is indeed, the best thing root brought me.
I don't have XBMC as the default launcher, but that would be nice, if I still had a way to use the official Netflix app - maybe some day!
You can still use XBMC from the main GUI even if you aren't root. I have a rooted FTV and an unrooted one. I am in the process of unrooting the rooted one as I never use sub storage and the unrooted FTV seems to have been more stable. For example I have never had to reboot it to get it to play a video from Plex whereas I have had to do this with the rooted one. Mind you there could be many reasons why that is the case. Seems odd that rooting would lead to a less stable system. More likely it's what I have done as root which has caused that.
The one thing which would be nice is if you could streamline the GUI and have certain apps in a fixed place. I don't really like them moving all over the place. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.

Rather than unrooting it,sell it in its rooted state and buy a new unrooted unit. I cant speak for plex, but i have a rooted fireTV which is working just fine with hulu netflix xbmc. Just use the adbfire tool to upgrade to the latest version of the rooted firmware. Really easy, and if its still unstable for plex, sell it off. Might even make some money lol.
