[Q] Silicone vs TPU case? - General Accessories

Which case do you prefer for your cell phone?
Silicone, when you take your device out of your pocket, chances are the case will slip and stay in your pocket and the device will be in your hand, without the case.
TPU, have not used it.

If your phone is falling out of your silicone skin case, you have a cheap, ill-fitting case. I use the Amzer Jelly case on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, Nexus S and up until a few weeks ago on my Sensation. That NEVER happened to me. I also alternate between an Amzer Jelly case and a clear TPU case on my Amaze. Both cases fit correctly. I now use a TPU case with a clear plastic inlay on my Sensation. Also no problems there either.

I use neither on my phone...got skinomi, couldn't stand the bulkiness of having the other types of cases, regardless of the added protection it might have provided.

I prefer TPU cases. I've never been a big fan of silicone cases. As of now, I have an Otterbox Commuter case which is actually silicone and hard shell. The silicone part is a little loose but it has the hard outer shell around it so it's alright.

I got a cheap TPU case off eBay, and I must say it is very good and the design is very nice. It is the "S-shaped" on the back, black TPU case.

I totally agree with you!

Personally I'd much prefer the TPU ones to the silicon based

Bodyguardz
I prefer Bodyguardz full body protection. It's a wet application type material that feels like plastic but after drying up it hardens and becomes protective. It can be removed at any time and does not interfere with the normal operation of the phone (yes, you can still take out your battery). Honestly I have not dropped my HTC HD7 as of yet, but one thing's for sure it will protect this phone from any scratches on the actual case. Plus, I don't have to constantly clean the screen anymore to remove "finger magnet" phenomena.
It's kinda like InvisibleShield except that it's waaay more reliable and comfortable. If that doesn't please you, they also have a cool Carbon-Fiber cover that is a dry application type. You should give their site a try

i prefer silicon case

there are some cases made of both TPU (soft) and PC (hard) materials. I think such types of case will work fine.

TPU (termoplastic polyuretane) has the benefit of flexibility like silicone but the nongrip effect of the plastic. I would warmly recommend to you to go with the TPU even though it's a bit more expensive than silicone.
If you take into account that silicone lasts for about a month before it starts to stretch and starts falling off your cellphone like a gooey toy, the TPU will last for about 2 years before showing signs of ware.
BTW. you could try the ebay for cheap TPU cases. about=<2$

Otter Box your phone will look brand new when you get your next phone.

TPU all the way! When i had silicone lint from my pocket would always be on it after taking it out of my pocket..... TPU is much smoother and just better in my opinion.

I prefer TPU over silicone. The silicone cases don't last .

Tpu or the cheap hard plastic.

I only use Otterbox cases. Have dropped my phone a few dozen times, and it doesn't even have a scratch.

Tpu or rubberized plastic, silicone cases are not so good .

Help finding a worthy case!!

My wife has the Case-mate tough case for her Inspire 4G and I love that case. Unfortunately, they don't make cases for the Atrix yet. Any one have any ideas on a similar 2 piece rubber interior with the hard shell? I really like the design and protection it offers. Thx in advance!
Get the Otter Defender Case. I have dropped my phone plenty of times and there is no sign of damage to my Atrix.
Otterbox Commuter
it has silicone (rubber-style) inside with a hard shell cover outside. Minimal size with maximum protection.

Agreed I love my Commuter, and it matches what the op asked for better than the defender.
Defender - Hard plastic inside/ soft rubber out
Commuter - Soft rubber inside/ Hard plastic out
Try the $5 hard case from Amazon
I have tried 4-5 different cases ranging from $3 to $30 and I ended up with the $3 hardcase:
(1) $4 Silicon case: it got a little loose after a few days. Would come out of the sleeve if yo drag it too fast from the pocket. I still have 4 of different color at home.
(2) $25 feather case: it is a one piece design, basically protects the batter cover but not much on the front. Returned it.
(3) Otto case: Way to bulky! The whole idea to get an Atrix is for its sleekness!
(4) $3 hardcase (black) from Amazon: I love it the best. It does not add too much to the phone (1mm) and it fits very tight! It gives enough protection on the front (the edge on the front raises about 1mm). The only caution is that once it is installed, it is very hard to remove it. You can remove it by plying open the snaps on the four corners using a flathead screw driver, but woul probably destroy the case.
Thanks for the replies guys, I do like the Commuter! Probably gonna order one off Ebay this weekend! I don't like the the hard cases, but I've seen them allow dirt inside and end up scratching the plastics on the backs of phones.

have the speck case droped it one time phone poped out of the case and got scratched up do not recommend it go otter box
Well I have to vote for the spek case. I dropped my case and it cracked the case but phone was ok and stayed inside the case. I went and got another one, I find the otter box a bit bulky.
Both cases are very good IMHO
+1 for speck case, great size to protection ratio!

I've had it for a week and very happy due to the minimalistic design.
get either an seidio innocase or get an incipio feather case, those 2 are my personal favorites.
the innocase has a nice pad inside so it won't scratch the phones battery cover, while keeping it as small as possible.
the feather case is for the minimalist look, least amount of space consumption and the best for docks so you won't have to pull it out...but its a little fragile, it will protect for falls since it adds a little gap to the front but most likely the fall will take the hit and crack the case.
if you're looking for something similar to the case-mate cases, go for the sidio.
Incipio

I highly recommend one of the glossy black TPU cases you can find off Amazon: $8.50 before tax.
Check these ones out. I'm currently using the plain black and it is very nice.

You try to find it on ebay, I think you 'll find a variety of rubber case for your device and the price is quite affordable
I got my girlfriend a Amzer TPU case, I have the same kind on my Tbolt
http://www.amzer.com/Amzer-Luxe-Argyle-Skin-Case-Smoke-Grey-P88562.htm
I bought a $4 silicone case from amazon that seems to be working quite well. It doesnt quite fit as snug as I'd like though, but it keeps the profile small and its easy to get out of my pocket.
Case
Yeah..i think silicon case is better..
I am now using a soft pouch, I think it's better than a silicone case because it protects also the screen and it's not "sticky" like silicone cases are (I always found difficult to put the phone into the jeans' pocket when I am sitting if I use a TPU case)... You could try a pouch and see if you like it
Thanks for the ideas on cases. I have thought about getting one but never sure which are cheap and rip easy or whatnot.

I bought a $7 silicone case from my local ATT store and this thing is the best. It fits nice and snug, and is easy to remove if need be. Of course, I wear carpenter jeans so the slight stickiness doesn't bother me. AFAIK tho, I believe they stopped selling it in my area so that may be the case everywhere.
These three cases look nice! Does anyone have them? Which is best?

Best Protector Case for a captivate

Hi, i was wondering about which case buy and want to see your opinions about the best case for the cappy.
I've been watching the Trident Clyclops: http://www.cyclopscase.com/products/Trident-Cyclops-Protective-Case-for-Samsung-Captivate--Red.html
And also the otterbox http://www.otterbox.com/samsung-captivate-cases/samsung-captivate-cases,default,sc.html.

I had issues getting to the four buttons with the Otterbox Defender. Nevertheless, in terms of protection, I trust them wholeheartedly.
Anyone has tested the Trident?
In addition to otterbox and cyclops look at the seidio active x.
this one http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csk3sscap-rd.htm? i like the desing
I just had my second Otterbox holster break. They replaced the first one without batting an eye. I haven't had a chance to call about #2, but frankly I'm not sure if I want to risk it. Fortunately the phone fell out while I was driving my car, not my motorcycle, but I'm not sure I want to risk it again.
So far it's the only case I've tried.
I hate to buck the trend, but I really like the cheap TPU eBay cases. I know, I know, some of us think you need to spend a lot to pamper your Cappy, but I do have my reasons.
They are cheap. I'm big on spending less than $5 for things.
TPU is a great blend of rigidity and pliability. I think silicone is a touch too soft to disperse impact energy, and hard plastic transmits the energy to the phone and often breaks in the process.
They are slick, but easy to hold. I carry my phone in my pocket. I think holsters look kinda dumb. TPU is generally very smooth and slides in and out of a pocket very nicely.
They are thin. Many of the hard molded cases turn your sexy-thin Captivate into a non-sexy blob, cool molded patterns notwithstanding. Lots of the silicone cases have kind of a shapeless look that I don't like.
I've been using a plain black TPU case for a while now, and I get lots of comments on how thin my phone is. I've also dropped it several times with no ill effect, except a less shiny spot on one corner of the cover. No complaints, and I really have a hard time imagining how the expensive ones are better.
TPU is nice and much, much better than silicone. I wish otter/seidio/trident would use TPU. I have a thin TPU case (body glove) and like it alot. Its just sometimes I want the thicker, two layered plastic and rubber case which is why I also have the seidio active.
The first case I bought was the pdair aluminum which would be a nice case but it kills the cellular signal so I can't recommend anyone buy it. Wifi works fine so if I ever travel somewhere I won't have service I plan on using it.
I like my Bodyglove case just fine. I've used it since the launch of the cappy and couldn't be happier. It's more rigid than silicone and less bulky than the otterbox. I've dropped my cappy numerous times on pavement, and as long as a jutting edge doesn't hit the screen it won't break. There is a slight lip on the front of the body glove that makes it so the screen doesn't hit when dropped on a flat surface.

Last I checked, Otterbox only has the Commuter for the S2, ATM.
Body Glove
I have bought like 5 cases for my cappy, the Otterbox, Body Glove, a slim hard plastic snap on case and a full hard snap on case.
In the end my 2 favorites are the Body Glove and the Slim snap on that snaps only on the back.
The otterbox case is nice, it is just too bulky. I use the Body Glove daily because it protects from impact, is not bulky and slides in and out of the pocket easy.
Moving forward I am all about the TPU cases.
I use this case http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BD2-HK3SSCAP-BK
Look on ebay, I've seen these for $35. Dropped the phone twice and there's no damage on the phone at all.
I use the otterbox commuter with an invisible shield screen protector. I work with concrete and often get my phone cpvered with dust and grime. The case gets really dirty but when I remove it the phone is still perfect. I would take this case over the bulky defender version.

Otterbox scratchs the device?

Hi guys,
I bought the galaxy nexus.
since i'm in the millitary I want to protect the phone perfectly and I though about the otterbox defender.
BUT I've seen on youtube a video that shows how the case scratchs the top of the device, the bottom and around the front camera.
I wanted to know if there is someone here has the case and could recommend me buying this or not.
thanks
Because the defender's inner frame is hard plastic, debris like sand and dust can become lodged between the frame and the device, causing scratches.
The otter box commuter has a silicon inner layer, and won't have this issue.
If you want a case LIKE the defender, maybe the trident krakken case will work? Its very similar to the defender.

I bought a OtterBox Defender based on my good experiences with OtterBoxes for iPhone.2 weeks into owning the case,I decided to remove it and found that a lot of dust got accumulated in the the case and the phone was scratched at the top.Not only that,I found out that the plastic frame of the screenguard had broken on one side.I'd advise you to not buy the Defender, instead something like the Trident Kraken.

That ballistic shell case looks pretty good. The Seidio Active is another great case( http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-active-case-black-p/csk3ssgnlk-bk.htm).I haven't used it though.
Thanks for this thread. I was going to buy one as I do for all of my phones. Bet I've owned six defender cases.
After reading this and the reviews on otterbox.com I think I'll buy a trident case.
I had a ballistic on the infuse I had. Was a nice case.

Balistic cases dont have the port covers, which is a must for me.
The Defender was my first case, I was told in the VZW store that it might scratch the phone due to trapped dust, but it was better than nothing on day 1. I liked it alright but after a few months the clips started breaking, I bought the Kraken as a replacement.
The Kraken is an alright case, a little bulkier than the defender. I liked that it offered the same protection as the Defender, I disliked how the front LED was half covered. In the end - it was too bulky for me to keep it on forever, I would still use it if I wanted some super extra duty protection.
So I got the Commuter, I have had Commuters for my Captivate and Atrix so I am familiar with their design and function. The gnex Commuter is the same as past Commuters, if you've had one before you know how it works. (This is not true for the Defender) I've had the Commuter on for the past 6-8 months and will not be switching again. It DOES protect the screen to an extent, I have dropped my phone allot and there are no blemishes on the phone or screen or Commuter. I do have a Zagg applied, not the protector that comes with the OB. If I had it to do over I would have bought the commuter first and it would have been the only case I needed. It offers plenty of protection with minimal bulk.

Good protective case for Nexus 5, less than $15?

Does anybody know a good Nexus 5 case that protects the camera lens, and the screen (obviously) for less than $15? I can do $20 at most, i don't want to waste too much on a case.
Diztronic Matte Black TPU case lifts the phone from resting on the camera lense and the screen. Love mine.
I highly recommend the diztronic voyeur.
I have dropped my phone numerous times, and this case has saved it multiple times. This case is slightly thicker than the diztronic tpu case, but its not too thick. It looks nice, and the back has a clear window so you can see the nexus logo, hence the name voyeur.

I am using a Sojitek crystal clear TPU case. I got it off Ebay for $4. I got it so I could show off my Skin yet still have protection. I have also tried the Hybrid cases. I didn't like the Spigen. If you can find it, the Luvvitt Hybrid was pretty nice, but I prefer pure TPU.
I find I like TPU best as it keeps the shape of the phone and only adds a little bit of thickness. Some Otterbox brick is too thick to comfortably fit in my pants pocket. It is not too hard to find just about every color under the rainbow for a TPU case.
You can always try some on ebay or cheap knock-offs from sites such as aliexpress

I have the diztronic matte black tpu case. (Dad uses it on his s2, husband uses it on his 5s) I have dropped this phone a million times. I have no damage on this device. It's good protection with little bulk added.
I recommend the Diztronic TPU case, or if you want a little more protection the Acase Superleggera. I have both, dropped the phone about a million times with each.
The Acase saved my phone from a 15' fall on to concrete, and it still slides in and out of your pocket easily. Just my two cents.
