I don't know if it has something to do with the computer but I tried connecting it and it says USB device not recognized
Can someone help me out?

install everything from Windows Updater and you are good to go
I'm having the same problem. I have tried different USB cords and slots. It picks up on a friends computer though. On mine it doesn't even have a yellow exclamation. I can't even find the device in the control panel to uninstall it so I can reinstall a fresh driver. Tried drivers from Samsung website as well as PDA net app

download MTP drivers, update to windows media player 11, and make sure your entire OS is up to date.
if none of that works then you have a pretty big issue. And my recommendation would be to upgrade to Windows 7. Honestly, there isn't much reason not to.

I had windows 7 installed with all my drivers and everything set up and then "upgraded" to windows 8. All my drivers stayed and they worked perfectly. I didnt have to do anything at all. Infact I just used the drivers yesterday withouth a problem.

I am using Opensuse 11.4 for work and wondering if it is possible to connect my note 2 to the PC via cable.
I want to transfer file to and from the phone.
I installed the mtp tools but the PC still cannot recognize the phone.
You have to install gMTP do a search on Google for it. You might have to compile from source depending on what distro your running. Works great for me

You could just install the Airdroid app on the phone and transfer files through any browser.
Thats what I do on my Mac for example.
Nice thing about gMTP is that you don't have to worry about slow upload speeds and getting flagged by some savy network admin that watches there local network. Plus it's faster when your transferring large files etc.

Thanks for the reply, guys. I'll try gmtp. I have airandroid but it is too slow sometimes.
I have two micro usbs they both cant transfer files
First one- Bought from amazon only chargers, when plugged in says usb not recognized.
Second- From my friends old HTC shift (forgot which one)- shows up my internal and external sd but wont let me transfer files.
I installed the drivers correctly. I tested this on windows 8 and windows 7 on the same laptop. Any suggestions will be appreciated thanks
Edit: it once worked before with the stock usb cable
Also have just tried checking and unchecking debugging. still not able to transfer.
Try my drivers in Sig or naked drivers do a search

did that already. Did not work
Only certain ones work. The 6$ one on Amazon made by mediabridge works great if not for being bulky. Its won't break like the Samsung one. The factory Samsung one is almost as bad as the apple charger in terms of reliability.
Are you sure you did a complete wipe and reinstall of drivers ?

SOLVED. I installed kies then the official i747 drivers from samsung download center and one port works to transfer files. Any idea how to fix this issue? i could transfer perfectly with only one port on my comp wierd.. i can use usbs perfectly though on any ports
I have Android File Transfer installed (which works some of the time with my Nexus 4), I have USB debugging active, but my new N7 isn't recognized by my Macbook Pro 17" 2009. It charges, but doesn't show up as a drive, nor does Android File Transfer recognize it.
How can I transfer files over USB?
I use the Android File Transfer utility on my MacBook Air.
Works just fine..

Drivers
Drivers could be the issue
If you are on windows 8 or higher, this is the issue
to make sure of this, connect it to a windows 7 or xp machine, if the device is recognized then it is a drivers issue almost guaranteed.
