I like chicken... Which modem do you like? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Chello my Ep4gt brethren and Misses Ep4gt brethren!.. Im coming from the tmobile vibrant, rooted and ship... Got this new phone, swore id never root again... Two days later, im rooted! (longest 2 days of my life!) So far im on the ek02 renegade kernel... The question is ,I live near Boston.. Whats the best modem to have? And what order were they released in?... Im still a noob after 2 years of flashing, I know if you add your age divided by your grandmothers birthday add squash subtract 36 watermelons youd get the order of releases... But in closing, the only thing I could retain in school was water... Oh yeah, whats your favorite roms... Oh yeah, and what would you do for a Klondike bar?

Calk's ROM hands down is my favorite. And the EL29 kernel has the best results for me.

EL29 and pretty much all the ROMses are good.

EL29 is the latest modem. Qbking77 has them listed in the order of release.

Try out the roms for yourself. They all have their strengths and quite frankly I love each one since they're all great. Currently on TNz Blend and runs great.

Currently using EL13 modem, EL26 destroyed my battery life. Might flash EL29 today and give it a try.
UnNamed ROM is what I'm running and I love it.

EL29 is the latest modem out, and has been working the best for me. I use it in concert with the EL29 kernel that steadyhawkin puts out, and this combination has been awesome.
As far as rom's go, I've been using the UnNamed rom for a while, with the aforementioned kernel and modem, and I haven't looked back!

Pretty happy with EL29 modem

Cool, thanks for getting back.. Will try newest one

Yes just jump to the top EL29 is purty gud.
I also made the jump from Tmobile and a vibrant. That phone was a blast to flash. Lotsa luv for it on XDA.

Yeah , absolutely! The vibrant dun me well... So far el29 is a good choice... The batterie was superb on ek02... Ill test this ***** for a little bit... Thanks for your help dude
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

on el29 my signal strenght was alot better and 4g was a lot faster. On 3g on the other hand was a lot slower than usual or sometimes it wouldnt connect at all. At first i thought it might have been since i installed it through cwm but odin did the same. Running on el26 right now since with that modem is the only one i can get really nice 3g speeds
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

All EL29 setup is the best for me. GPS is working better than previous versions too.
Typically 3G ~1.5mb download and 4G is 7-10mb now.
EK02 3g was around 1.0mb and 4g around 7.

i think the orders were, eg 30/31, eg 12, ek02, el 26, el 29. i really liked el 26 concerning the internet connection, but the gps was wacked, so i use el 29 now. it seems little better, but it had little bit of a problem today over gps. I use el 29 with caluk 2.8 rom. it's harder to get older rom with older modems, because they keep updating to the new ones.. el 29's connection to cell phone service is better, some say that the battery drains more.. i also saw my blue light not turning off on the phone, until i rebooted it.
i think there is a fix for el 26 concerning the gps, but i've never tried it.
also some people swears by the eg 30, the OG.

Any series of Calkulin's ROM (best EL13 and above for no CIQ) without a doubt. Rogue repacked stock kernel line and Rogue Desperado kernel are the best IMHO.
Totally stable, fast as ****, smooth, responsive. Combine all that with Overstew's and ssconceptz's ICS theme, and you have yourself the best of all worlds.
Coming from the vibrant and team whiskey's world myself.

I switch back and forth between Calk's and Starburst each time there is a new release. I don't theme and I don't even know how to test a quadrant. BUT, for normal everyday use, battery life, and smoothness of operation; I can't tell a difference between the two.
What is a distinctive like or dislike about either ROM that makes you prefer it over the other?
Switching back and forth is such a pain though when you have to redo all your widgets, shortcuts, reinstall all the apps, etc. I'm sticking with Calk's rom unless Starburst really does something to set itself apart. Right now I can barely tell the difference besides the theming...which doesn't matter that much to me since I love the ICS theme.

Nandroids are your friends. As well as TB.
This morning I odin'ed back to complete stock then ran the new script found in the Dev forum to root a stock E4GT w/o odin or cwm. Works like a charm. Leaves the phone/kernel completely stock but w/ root to be able to run your fav root aps.

I've been using TB to reinstall all of my apps, contacts, and even remembered wifi networks. I love it, but can it does widgets and shortcuts too?

[Q] Top Epic Roms

Just curious so if anyone wants to chime in please do ok ive noticed since the last month or so there seems to be 2 roms that stay updated and the most popular which are Calk and StrongSteves and he uses Calk's as base so my question is has anyone tried both and came to any honest conclusions on which is better and if Strong Steves just a themed version of Calk's
I have been extremely happy with Calk. Great battery life and speed.
If you like battery life, check this out;

I just got the epic touch, still have my old epic and I have flashed my old one many of times. Many of great roms but ater a couple of days the fc or reboot, trying my best to avoid that. Daily driver plus tweaks ... Id say cauklins is most stable. Its a harder choice with these epic devs cus to be honest almost all these Roms are pretty damm solid for being a young phone. A lil better battery here, a lil better reception there...they're all pretty stablestable. Reboots stopped with the EK02 modem for me. And the only fc I've had is between zeam and my pandora folder. But zeam fixed it.
Coming from the HTC hero and the OGepic ...where there was a lot of test and error...were lucky to have some good smart seasoned devs on this phone...not to say they're decent ppl but they do decent work ;D memory leaks, LOS, reboots etc...get stomped out pretty fast.

To the OP; I would check out the Starburst ROM. The latest build makes it extremely easy to flash with CWM. It offers the best stock experience in my opinion. It's an absolutely flawless ROM which is basically a stock Epic ROM stripped down for speed. The most stable build has been out for over a month and it's made by one of the most respectable devs for the Epic.
There are some options for customization as well and you can flash the latest official kernel/modem for the phone. The ROM is 100% stable, I have been running it since I got my Epic and wouldn't run anything else.
It's not a flashy ROM however, I like the build, it's super fast and stable, all of what you are asking for.

GPS fix on ICS roms.

I've been reading how some people have GPS on fb17 and some don't. I haven't tested this yet so if someone does please let me know. I remember on the original epic on the dk28 Froyo leak in order for GPS to work you had to get a GPS lock first and then Odin to the leak. (For those original epic users u might remember this) im wondering if this is true for this leak. I haven't tested this out but I will later today. So for those that can't get a GPS lock Odin back to EL29 and get a good GPS lock. Go back into download mode and odin FB17. hopefully GPS will now work.

It wasn't until I flashed Caulks rooted, deodex version that GPS instantly worked. So I know, that works better for me at least.

[Q] Best rom for battery life E4GT

Hi im looking for the best rom with the best battery life. i had one a while back i was on battery for 15 hours and still had half a battery left i took a screen shot and i was actually using my phone too! open to any suggestions just wanna see how long i can get this baby to last

FYI.. everyone has a different experience with modems.. one person may be best with el29 another may be best with FDwhatever, and as far as roms go your probably going to hear alot of blazer, and calks.. battery life also depends on stuff in your phone.. like apps and settings.. 3g, wakelocks, background data, wifi.. all that kinda **** will vary your battery life..
you probably already know this, but just pointing it out.. trying to help out around here. =)

I've gotten the best battery life absolutely hands down on codename YMMV
I just went to calks e4gt 3.0 first time ive been on gingerbread since i got the phone bc as soon as i got it i went to ics lol. very smooth. calk always does amazing work. ill let you guys know how i end up and yea i usually dont mess with profiles seeing as how it already has a battery saver script but i usually roll with 3g off all day unless i wanna surf the internet a little bit then ill turn it on check fb..etc then turn it off drastic increase from having it on all day
I'm using blended ROM from from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20166744 so far I've had excellent battery life.

He could start with FE07 leak. It's ICS with TW and its pretty stable compared to some of the earlier leaks. It's an easy flash, too, thanks to sfhub's odin. You can find it in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642564
That is a hard question to answer as everyone has a favorite for different reasons. They are all pretty stable. Calkulins E4GT 2 is one of the more stock looking with a few battery saving tweaks. Blend ICS "Goodness" has really nice themed ics look and has very similar tweaks. AOKP Roms are fairly stable abd have built in ROM Control which is very nice. I'm using HyDrA tablet hybrid ROM and its stable, but because of the dpi settings the market sees the phone as a tablet and you have to change your dpi to download regular apps from the market.

There are a number of really amazing ICS ROMs, Anakonda, Venum Ice, Nocturnal Venum, actually anything from Teams Nocturnal and Venum, also anything from Calkulin, agat63 has some really sweet, clean work as well and you can never go wrong with sfhub's one-clicks.
Another vote for fe07 leak then if your friend likes it send them here to figure it out on their own.
FE07 will be your best option for a beginner. Don't go to AOSP until source kernels are released. FE07 will be the most stable. CM9 is very stable too though.

The reason for this is because of the kernel for ICS not being released from Samsung/Sprint yet. It's pretty simple to do all the regular CWM functionality on an ICS based ROM though - Use Odin (or highly recommended: Mobile Odin from the play store, which doesn't require a PC) and put the el26 CWM kernel on your phone (it's found many places, like the AOKP OP for example). It wont boot up with this kernel so just boot into recovery and from there you can backup, flash themes, wipe things, and then to get back to your ROM simply flash an AOSP tweaked kernel - also readily available (in AOKP OP again).
Certainly a few more steps than we were used to on GB Roms but it's totally worth it to me. ICS is a massively better experience for me so the few hoops to jump through are worth it. When that source kernel hits (any day now) it will be the land of milk and honey.
