[Q]About ET4G and LTE - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just a quick question, I will be getting the ET4G tomorrow leaving AT&T and coming to Sprint. Question I have about the ET4G is when Sprint does go LTE, and the ET4G is a 4G phone will we be able to use the LTE network on this phone? If this question has been asked before sorry, but I searched for it and couldnt find any info on it.

As far as I have heard and have read up on it our phone will not be LTE capable.

the only 4g you will see with this phone is wimax. and you should check to see if you even get that in your area. i don't but I don't need it. this phone will never have lte

Well great, and we are unable to upgrade for 2 years? They dont let you upgrade a year out on your contract expiring?

After you sign up, you won't be able to upgrade for 20 months. If you're able to wait, the Galaxy Nexus is being announced this week and will be Sprint's first LTE phone.

See there is the problem, I cant stand AT&T anymore. The price I pay there I can get my whole family smart phones and it will be $10 cheaper.. And the customer service sucks. Oh well a 4g phone is fine for now, Thats what I have at AT&T now. The HTC Inspire. Thanks for the info.

Flashing the Epic 4G Touch to Cricket

http://www.cricketusers.com/sprint-...-4g-touch-cricket-talk-text-internet-mms.html
If anyone wants to take a stab at the MMS, please do. Now that root has been achieved due to Shabbypenguin and ACS, getting this to work on the 45 dollar plan should not be a problem also...
I'm not at home and don't really have time to play with this device anymore. I should be studying or else I'll fail Jumpmaster school...
If a person buys an Epic already flashed to cricket then i assume i can follow the above instructions to flash back. But what would be the settings i flash back to? Or is there a quick and easy way to get it back to sprint?

I too would like to know if this is possible. I just purchased a clean esn Epic Touch 4g from ebay, but I am paying off the 1000$ dollars I owe sprint, so I will flash for cricket now, but will eventually need to get back onto sprint with the same phone.
I can follow guides pretty good on using QPST as my Epic 1 is flashed by me but, without them I'm rather lost!
Can someone please answer this question?

I would backup the QPST settings and also see if there is a full ODIN for the device. That would probably take it back to stock in a hurry.
I found this too so I imagine this guy got MMS working. Interesting for those in areas where there's no 4G. Can't beat $45 a month and Cricket's 3G can't be any worse than Sprint's other than signal strength. (considering Cricket buys their bandwidth from Clear).

Cricket has their own towers in some areas and uses Sprint in others (MVNO). Clear provides Sprint with WiMax 4G. They're all trying to transition over to LTE. I can't think of one thing Cricket would go to Clear for right now.

Oh your brother. Of course. I would believe him over you all day.
Seriously, I was looking for actual proof. Like a news source or a press release or something that can be vetted for authenticity.
What spectrum are they using? They don't own any there so how are they building the network?
If they are actually doing this why has there been no information released ANYWHERE?
I just bought one for my girlfriend and it was already flash to cricket and right now its having signal issues, so I was wondering what is the best modem and prl combo for cricket wireless.

Cricket has coverage in LA already. I have Cricket and have used my phone many times in LA. Also, look at their coverage map: http://www.mycricket.com/coverage/maps/wireless (enter 90013, select Los Angeles, zoom out).
Do they have little cricket booths where you can buy phones? No. Maybe that's what he meant was 'coming' to LA, but I've been using my phone in LA since 2009.

GALAXY NEXUS gt-I9250 4g ?!?!

hi. i ordered the galaxy nexus from handtec.co.uk a while ago
and it arrived 2-3 weeks ago. i live in kuwait and the cost is around 207 KD shipping included.
yesterday a store called electrozan started selling it for 199 KD with one year warranty with a company called wefix (what i care about is the LOCAL warranty)
and the model is gt-I9250 and in the poster it says 4G !
is it lte 4g ?
i did a google search and many sites are saying lte 4g even gsmarena.
and i discovered my phone have dead pixels. so i talked to handtec and managed to get an approval for a refund. so i buy the phone from electrozan and get a local warranty so i don't have to ship it to the uk everytime something happens to it.
anyways ... your thoughts?
Thanks for the no replies ...

Some networks are marketing HSPA+ as 4g. HSPA+ is basically the fastest mobile data connection possible on the GSM version of the Galaxy Network.

The gsm nexus does not have lte. you've been given the answer lots of times, and it won't change no matter how many times you bump the thread.

Again, 4G is a generic term. There are three versions of 4G out in markets now. LTE, WiMAX and HSPA+ (anything faster than 14.4Mbps). The GSM Galaxy Nexus supports 4G on HSPA+, but the I-9250 is not an LTE version and no Galaxy Nexus has WiMAX support.
thanks for the replies i get it now that they are stupid. i even asked them are you sure this is 4g and they said Yes then i asked them again " are you sure it is LTE" they said yes it is and referred me to the GSMarena link
it is sad to see stores that don't know what the hell they're talking about. i guess people who bought from them are disappointed !

Fyi, settings --> about --> status will give you your signal data. AFAIK, Verizon exists only in the US but they have Vodafone as Sister company abroad. I think Verizon is owned by the same people that own Vodafone. Don't quote me on that.

Does that means there will be no new towers installed in areas like Indianapolis. Guess we will get pushed to the back of the line for the LTE service as well.

this has been beaten to death already. it is very unlikely any new towers will be added... and certainly not in an area where this is no wimax at all. a few towns might see some new protection sites but thats about it.
wimax will work until at least 2015... so you have 3 full years to get some use out of it when you can.
I could be wrong but I don't think clearwire is done with wimax yet.
Although they do it at a turtles pace they are still expanding last I saw.

clear wire is also switching to lte as well. sprint gave them millions of dollar to help them switch over. clearwire is also ditching the efforts of wimaxes..
i just hope sprint is quick about lte rollouts. with lightsquare not being able to produce lte for sprint, they need to be quick with an alternatives
Thanks for the response, really what to use the 4g I get teased with it constantly while traveling and can't seem to find clear answers on news relating to these things
Clearwire will do some maintenance and minor additions here or there (to fulfill license requirements), but there will be no more major expansion. The existing Wimax network will be continued until at least 2015. Beginning in 2013, Clearwire's LTE network will be turned on in key cities to supplement Sprint's LTE network.

correct, no more wimax phones. there is no incentive to add any more towers. if any towers do go up they will be protection sites. altho according to the following site explaining protection sites... they were to be finished by 2011

Clearwire does not have enough money to make the capital expenditures (which is why 4G Wimax was halted). Instead, beginning in 2013, Clearwire's LTE network will be turned on in key cities ("hotspots") to supplement Sprint's LTE network.

Because Sprint is awesome. Bask in its awesomeness! Bask! Bask, I tell you!
In all seriousness, what is Sprint to do? They are now in the position that they need to change to LTE for its 4G technology. WiMax is dying. For those of us who bought WiMax devices before we had WiMax service (me included), we took a risk. It didn't pay off.
Given the position Sprint currently is in, they are doing the right things. Network Vision and LTE.

What is Sprint to do? How about offering early upgrades to an LTE phone without penalties?
And I did not take a risk, I signed a contract. Contacts exist to negate risk. I also asked them if 4g would be available in a specific area and they said yes. Now they say no. This change happened in a matter of months. Sprint took a risk and more they are pushing the cost of that failed risk on to its customers.
All I know is when they get 4g lte in an area I live in I will tell them that my 4g will not connect and have then replace it with an lte phone.
Wimax is not dieing, sprint is killing it. Big difference.

I like that idea of lte upgrades with no penalty. However i highly doubt they will go for it cause they need you to fullfill a 2yr contract to cover the cost of the highly marked down hand sets included in a 2yr contract. It would be soo sick though if they executed your idea! Why arnt people mad like you are ( other guys post not you crzchn) is for differeny reaons. I beleive most people if not all have the right to be and most should be. But for some one like me ( lives in hawaii) i bought this device knowing it woulsnt see 4g for years if ever. So i was already under the impression that i wouldnt get it so im not dissapointed. Even though the reps said i would get it i knew better than he did. I look forward to ICS because it wont be restricted to location since the net is everywhere. That is a realistic possibility im happy for. Besides my island is so tiny that there arnt lots of people hogging the towers so i average 1Mb/sec

Given how iit takes nearly a year for sprint to make money on each consumer as they take a huge hit oon every phone they discount, and how they are hurting for money as is... not happening. We knew that wimax was dying for nearly a year now, no news there. At least Sprint still allows unlimited data, as well as no BS fees like Verizon. Not to mention they are doing major upgrades to our network, specifically 3g.

GN on T-Mobile Monthly 4G vs. GS3 on Sprint's NO 4G?!

Well, I just bit the bullet and pre-ordered a blue 32GB GS3 but I'm catching myself already having buyer's remorse. I know that the GS3 won't disappoint in terms of hardware; but I also know that Sprint's abysmal data performance will continue to disappoint. Some friends from work are currently on T-Mobile's Monthly4G plan and are quite satisfied with it ($70 for unlimited everything up to 5GB of 4G). The data speeds they get are just out-of-this-world (10mbps+!!!) However, by switching to it, I'd have to give up on getting an out-of-contract GS3 with them as it will be waaay above my budget. Google is currently selling the GN for $400 and I was thinking that that phone coupled with the HSPA+ network would be a pretty killer setup. Sure, the phone is inferior to the GS3 in many respects, but what good is a phone if the network that backs it is lacking.
Well, what do you guys recommend for a lost, confused soul such as myself? I remembered having T-Mobile about 3 years ago and not being too satisfied with their coverage; have they improved? I'm in Orlando, FL by the way.
Thanks again for your time...
tmobile doesnt SUCK so to speak. If you live in an area where tmobile is strong. It works great. The problem is usually once you leave the inner city they have horrible service.
Im not going to lie ive thought about going back to tmobile. The speeds are terrible on sprint. Im reluctant to let go of my gs2 because i can at least get wimax in my area. Bit the bullet and even went and tried the new evo lte, but returned it becase there is no LTE in my area, and sprints speeds were just absolutely terrible.
I cant blame you, the galaxy nexus is a great phone with awesome dev community. Just remember at 7-12mbps 5gb will be gone in no time!

T mobile does this as well right?
Even if you get to this point, I remember my 3g speeds being a TON better than my Sprint speeds.. And since I can't use 4g on sprint because it has it's own issues I don't mind.
OP I am on the same boat, I left Tmob from sprint and regret every minute of it because of data speed/network issues.
I've been calling Sprint to complain and they have been very nice so far and I have already started talking possibly cancelling and they have agreed to work with me(possibly waive) cancellation fee's.
I'm waiting for the GS3 as well but I think it will be too bgi for my liking, since the GS2 is pretty much huge.
Another option is to get the GS3 on contract, sell it for higher and buy the GN you want.
whoa guys I am not speaking of T-Mobile but simple mobile which can be found here www.mysimplemobile.com. There is no throttling with them and actually its primarily 4g but even there whack 3g is still better than Sprint. They use T-Mobiles towers and you are safe if you get a TMobile phone and use it on their network. Do yourself a favor and try it out. You can buy a smiple mobile card on amazon for like a $1 or $2 then get an old tmobile phone and try it out. I am using my Sprint blackberry world phone and it works fine with it

True but if you activate your new phone, they charge a 15% restocking fee to return it. Not willing to give them more of my money if I'm leaving.
I just feel like Sprint is raising fees here and there (premium data, TEP increase, etc) to compensate for their plan prices. T-Mobile for 2 lines at $169.99 would come out to the same as what I'm paying for Sprint after taxes.
I'm just so fed up with Sprint's data performance in Orlando. It's useless 90% of the time. One of the neat features of the SG3 (even though I'll rarely use it I'm sure), is the Picture-in-Picture ability and with Sprint, I know that'll be pretty much useless to us.

True and true. Only thing is that I have been using Verizon file since December and I use it pretty heavy with text and data. Really if they kick me off I'd be happy to try out that simple mobile
akarol, guess it comes down to what is more important speed or getting the sgs3 on sprint. i have been dissatisfied with sprint for ages, went to verizon to check them out and all they could do was sing the praises of the GN. so here in phoenix I ran speed test on the unit the dude had at the store and on 3g it was getting 3.5mpbs! only sprint's wet dream could even get that close. If it were me (and hopefully soon) I'd try and swing the sgs3 on tmob (or an unlocked one for simplemobile, they are looking good). Surely you have some stuff laying around that could pawn off on craigslist for that extra cash for the phone
Will Sprint's 4G LTE covering your area? I think you should give that a chance.
I get wimax pretty much everywhere I go where I live (Tri-Cities, WA) which isn't a big city or anything.. in fact, it's so small that they had to combine 3 towns just to call it a city, lol.
At any rate, I get anywhere from 5 to 10 mbps pretty much everywhere. The 3G speed IS pretty craptastic, but it's fast enough for buffer-free pandora/shoutcast stations and sync/app downloads. It all depends on your coverage area which you should research before signing a contract =)

If you used WiMAX 4G non-LTE and do NOT have LTE available in your area...

I upgraded from the ET4G which has WiMax 4g. There is a 4g tower literally 1/4 mile down my street and i was getting an average of 8-10Mb/sec download speed under Wimax.
I ASSUMED... (thats where i went wrong) I purchased the Note 2, and thought there was the 3g, 4g WiMAX, and 4g LTE modes/antennas. Nope. So now that I have the Note 2 without LTE in my area, I'm stuck with HORRIBLE 3g (CDMA) speeds. No more HD Netflix or even a reliable connection to Pandora (high quality).
I live in South Bay Silicon valley area in California. Now I have to WAIT until LTE rolls out before I can use a data connection speed over 100k/sec. I cant believe they made this phone without the ability to connect to WiMAX 4g. I suppose WiMAX 4g will trashed once LTE rolls out and that would be a waste of hardware in the phone but there was no warning in the tech specs or Sprint reps.
Just warning to all out there wanting to upgrade the the Galaxy Note 2 where LTE is not available but have WiMAX speeds. The phone will NOT pick up WiMAX 4G. I would have waited to upgrade. =(

You could always switch back to the epic 4G Touch until LTE arrives and use the note 2 as a WiFi device.

woah, seriously? I had no idea this was the case... major bummer. I wonder if custom ROMs have the option?

Very true, I was just hoping to sell it for $200 and make some money back off the the beastly Note 2 price (on contract when purchased). Its so sad, I'm so used to looking at the 720p screen, it makes the E4GT look so much like a girly phone. =) I read some articles on how fast the 4g LTE should be coming out with wider coverage, I guess LTE is supposed to cover just about everywhere that has 3G coverage. Just a matter of time.Since the Optimus G and the Note 2 are being released, they are pushing LTE as "quick as they can" supposedly.

I checked as best I could. I went into the phones hidden menu using the MSL code and checked the settings. There is no mode for 4G and 4G LTE separately. Sprint tech support also confirmed this (which I don't believe the crap they say). I gave them a hard time because I had a very hard time believing that that phone would not pickup standard 4G.
The app called 'PHONE INFO' on the market show you all your options for radio settings also.
A simple, quick google search would have confirmed that this phone does not have a WiMAX antenna... Samsung tried the best they could to standardize the hardware - not only across carriers but globally as well.

Thats why I used the words 'I ASSUMED' It makes sense to have WiMAX built in. A normal person would assume it would hence the posting. Just a warning thread.
You wouldn't think to check if, 4G would work on a 4G LTE phone.
Not to piss on ur rant bit its been said a million times by sprint and everyone else no new wimax devices wayyy back before evo lte launched its kinda a no Brainer, that this device wouldn't have wimax jus sayin

Obviously my fault with not keeping up with tech specs. I stayed on T-mobile after switching from Sprint just phone their line of phones and recently came back to Sprint. GSM is alot more simple.

Even though I was basically without 4G since the inception, I am glad that they didnt include a WiMax radio on this phone. It is a battery leach (so it was always turned off) and I would not want to change the battery life of this phone ever. I am right now on 1 day 5 hours with about 15% left on this battery charge.

Yes, WiMAX was a leach! At least the specs for battery life are close to 3g battery life. Something i can look forward to.
Not claiming the validity of the thread but I only have one problem which is the OP calling WiMax a standard 4G. So far only LTE Advanced (not a regular LTE) is capable of such standard.

I was thinking about correcting that but i figure people got the idea.... ill go ahead and change that...
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the sprint s3 the same way? Lte only, no wimax?
I'm sorry about this, but honestly this was a no Brainer. Once sprint signed on with lte, wimax was done. To expect them to put a battery draining radio they had no intention of continuing with (known for a very long time) would be unrealistic.

I've been following the thread since the first page and have been waiting for someone to post exactly this. Complete no brainer IMO

Ah, oh well. I should have kept up with the High speed specs of LTE and WiMAX. I just went out and bought the lastest and greatest. I'm your typical "USER". I did some searching. obviously AFTER the fact and it seems I'm not the only one which make me feel a bit better about getting flamed.
It's not a big deal, and in fact, I'm a bit surprised you didn't get hammered sooner and harder. I'm thinking these forums are not as active or less forgiving than say the development forums.
Enjoy your new toy, I'm jealous but I'm holding off till development is further along.
