[GUIDE][CDMA] How to Change your Carrier name in Notifications and unlock screen!! - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

MODERATOR- Please move to correct sub-forum, it originally started as question but was solved and i turned it into a guide. Thanks.
Well... i had been trying to figure out how to change the carrier name in the notification bar for a few days and with some luck and some good tips from XDA Members and from antEris for pointing me in the right direction... here is a guide to help others who may want to change theirs as well!
**CAUTION- You will need to re-enter your google account info. This will wipe your contacts, and sync settings, so make sure you re-sync once complete!!**
Requirements:
Must have ROOT
FOR CDMA Devices ONLY! Will NOT work on GSM
Untested on all others. (if you test it on r800a, or any other one, let me know so i can update this.)
Things you will need:
1. Ninjamorph (Market)
2. HxD (google it, its free)
3. USB Cable
Method 1:
Steps:
1. Using Ninjamorph, select "New Project"
2. Navigate to system/framework
3. Select the framework-res.apk
4. Exit to home
5. Connect phone to PC
6. Browse to AndroidThemes/workspace/framework-resapk/res/xml on your sdcard.
7. COPY eri.xml to the desktop.
8. Now open the HxD application on your PC.
9. Drag the eri.xml into the big gray area.
10. You will now see a bunch of code, scroll till you see "Verizon Wireless"
11. Highlight Verizon Wireless, starting from the last letter going back to the "V" in Verizon.
12. Now you can type in what you want, UP TO 16 characters. If your custom banner is less than 16 characters, use the SPACEBAR and hit it for a total of 16 characters including how many your custom banner is. (i.e... XperianceIT is 11 characters, so i hit space bar 5 times)
13. Once thats done go ahead and exit HxD, it will ask if you want to save, say yes.
14. Now place the new eri.xml back on to the root of your sd card.
15. Disconnect Phone from PC
16. Open Ninjamorph
17. Select "Existing Project".
18. Browse to the ORIGINAL eri.xml and select it.
19. Now browse to the eri.xml you placed on the sdcard after modifying it.
20. Hit yes, a few times here, it will now take you back to the Ninjamorph main screen.
21. Select "Finish Project".
You will now be prompted for a few things, like if you want Ninjamorph to optimize it since its a .apk, I chose NO, not sure what will happen if you choose yes. Once thats done, reboot and enjoy!!
Method 2:
COMING SOON!
dont forget to thank/donate to me if you like this and it helps you out!

I'm not 100% sure on this, but as I recall, build.prop changes are undone after each reboot. You cant see changes until you reboot, but it gets reset,so you cant do it.
But google for it and you will find an answer

That's not true. If it was we wouldn't be changing dpi, model etc via build.Prop

Ok here is a question for ya guys... is there a way to modify the build.prop to change the word "Verizon Wireless" on my status bar to say something different? I did it once on my Optimus S which was fully unlocked and rooted. My Play is rooted but BL locked. I have tried a few times using ROM Toolbox's build.prop editor and it saves the words i put in, but nothing changes on status bar even after reboot. What i did on my Optimus was every word that said "Sprint" i changed to say "gROM 2.2" and it worked, but i cant get it to work on my Play.

You mean in the notification drop down? I believe that information is stored in the framework not in the build.prop.
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk

Yes in the drop down. I know for Optimus S it was in build.prop, but it could be different for Verizon Xperia Play.

The text for the carrier label is in an XML file in the framework-res.apk.
Its under /system/framework/framework-res.apk
Then you'll need to edit eri.xml inside the apk on your computer, then push it back to your phone
You can find more specific instructions Googling "how to edit eri.xml"
Or you might try conap's app to do it all for you, not sure if it will work as its intended for use with aosp roms but heck, Verizon's rom kinda looks aosp. Worth a try anyway.

Hope this helps.

Oh dude, im so walking to my laptop right now to try it!
**UPDATE: The Conaps App didnt work, resulted in having to do a nandroid recovery.
Got it! Took over an hour of playing and several crashes, 2 bootloops, and 2 nandroid recoveries later! But its friggin done!

Oh wow, i didnt think of that.... let me take a look at the ERI.XML i have and see if maybe i can reference where my banner name is, maybe that will help.
I attached a screenshot of my eri.xml with some notes, let me know if this works, so i can update the guide for your guys phones as well.

Thats very odd.... i know it was there i even looked at it! Here it is again though...

That's what I have... No sign of a 3 :what:
Edit: I've played with the eri.xml file (changed a few values) and nothing at all changed. I have a feeling I need to find a different file to edit.
If i find out anymore information I'll let you know.

That is weird! I cant imagine it would be any different for your guys' phones. Is it possible for you to pull the eri.xml and send it to me. I don't think I will be able to test it on my phone. But Id like to look at it.
Edit: I wonder if yours can be changed in build.prop. are you running a custom rom?

Ok, I will check it out after work. Also, you might want to try changing it by editing your build.prop file, I know it doesn't work with mine but it might on yours. This can be done easily by using I rom tool box then click performance, then select build.prop editor. Yours might be a little harder cause of the "3". But I will copy the one I did on my old phine using this method to show which lines to edit, when I get off work.
EDIT- I couldn't download/view your eri.xml when I click the link I get an error.

I couldnt download your XML, i get an error when i try. Also, what are you using to view the xml on your phone? I love the way that one looks, does it allow you to edit it as well?

Will this work on unlocked devices?

I zipped the xml so hopefully it will download this time.

The app I used is called HEX Editor, it's free on the market!
I looked at the build.prop editor but I can't find anything referring to "3". This MAY be useful information to you but when my phone first starts and is searching for a signal is displays "3 UK" then when it has the signal it displays "3"

I unfortunately do not have a unlocked device so i havent been able to try it. Honestly, i would just make a nandroid backup, and then try see if it works, if not then, restore nandroid, THEN i would try doing it using the build.prop method. (which i havent made a do it yourself tutorial) but you can try using ROMTool Box, it has a built in build.prop editor, you would just find your carrier name in the .prop file and replace it whith whatever you want. This method allows for more character input, but it didnt work with my phone, so im not sure if its a Stock ROM vs. Custom ROM or if its CDMA vs. GMS thing. It worked on my old Sprint Optimus S w/ Custom ROM. If you try it and get it to work, let me know which method you used, so i can update the OP for compatibility.

That is useful, it gives me more line info to try and look for. Whats going to make it hard, is i wont have any way to test it myself, in order to narrow down what the value is we need to change, but i will look it over and see if anything stands out in comparison to mine. Can you send me a screen shot of the notification drawer pulled down? I want to see how it looks. Cause thats where the name will be not up in the bar by the clock and signal meter. (I ask, cause mine never said anything different while searching for signal as opposed to finding signal on the bar, or in notification pull down.)

editing touchwiz lock screen

is there a way to edit it? This must have been asked a million times, but i don't mean with widget locker or lockbot or something like that. I find the clock tacky, since the notification bar is right there and i want to remove it. i'd imagine it would require rooting. thanks
yes
yes requires rooting because you would have to modify a theme zip like a stock theme then modify the .PNG then flash ....atleast thats the only way i know about it
You need to be rooted and running a deodexed rom. You then would have to do some xml edits to remove the clock

ok thanks guys. while i've rooted before, my epic still has the new phone smell and i'm still babying it. but could you help with this? is there a locking app that either:
1. overwrites that xml file or w.e. so that it is not active at the same time. (so they aren't fighting for domination?)
2. keeps the functionality of being able to swipe to missed texts, calls, e.t.c.
thanks.

Those two are pretty much it as far as lockscreens that work on the epic. You can get the rotary lockscreen if you use the cm6 beta, which I have found to be quite stable. Other than that you are going to need an app rather than a flashable zip.

I would recommend GOTO. Its in the market. Its a paid app, but as you unlock you can choose between messages, phone and gmail. You can change which apps it opens if you don't use the stock programs. I have been using it for a month or so. Just make sure you run through the setup twice to make sure the settings are set correctly. Initial setup is kind of tricky i though. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

Is it possible to remove the time, date, and carrier from lock screen?

Is it possible to have the stock 2.3 lock screen minus the text? I would love to have just the slide lock/silence and my background, zip download would be fine, but I would love to learn how to do it myself.
Anyone? I would expect at least at a sarcastic comment but nothing at all?
The only way I know to modify the lock screen is with a application, such as WidgetLocker...They have a default option for a Sense lockscreen, but I've never tried it (I'm an AOSP man personally)
The uot kitchen might be able to do this. I personally know nothing about it, but I've heard people talk about the wonders it works. Google is your friend in this case, I think.

yes you can hide virtually anything
just takes some tinkering
This thread interests me also... I'm using Virtuous with the 3.0 lockscreen. Haven't figured out how to remove the "31000" on top of the time... I've tried modifing it with root explorer and going into spn-conf.xml file but haven't been able to edit it. Also tried Carrier Name all it changes the file but not the screen.... Any sugg??

I know CCName can change your carrier text and, therefore, you can make it blank. I don't know how to change the other ones though. Does Sense use a Clocktopia font? If so, you could probably make a "blank" font.

[CHALLENGE] Enable ICS to show 1X / 3G

Back in the days of Gingerbread nivron created this excellent tutorial on how to enable 1X / 3G to display correctly in the status bar.
Now that most people are moving over to ICS, the 1X/3G issue returns. It also seems that the files have been changed and rearranged. The smali edits are no longer located in StatusBarPolicy.smali. In fact, that file is gone completely in ICS.
I was able to locate 2 files that seem to contain the variables that need to be changed to fix the issue: TelephonyIcons.smali and NetworkController.smali. Since I am not a developer or a Java programmer, I wouldn't know how to approach the code. So if anyone is willing to take on this challenge, it would be greatly appreciated. The files are attached to the post for your viewing/editing pleasure.

[Q] Any way to Customize/Personalize Notification Area ?

Hi All,
I've been looking for an app/tweak or something to be able to edit the notification area that opens with the "Down Gesture" on the status bar, my biggest thought about this is that there is a lot of space that could be saved/compressed so more useful information can appear within one screen, here you are some thoughts (my device is rooted and is working on stock 2.3.5):
1. Generally, rows heights can be cut to 1/3 at least.
2. Operator name can be removed (of course I know the operator I'm on and I don't need to get reminded everytime I open the notification area ).
3. The white background is really boring, it'd be better to have something that suits the background for example (at least semi-transparent).
I'll be happy to know what you think !
Thank you all.

Thank you indeed for your response, however, this isn't really what I'm looking for (when it's still very nice), but it mods everything individually, for example, I want to delete that header where the operator name is written and shift things up to save space, this isn't doable there (correct me if I'm mistaken)....
Let me know your thoughts !
Have you tried cm7 yet? It provides a greater control of your notification drawer than any of the sense versions.
Notificaiton Widgets
Choice of Large/Small Carrier Provider or your custom text
Change the tray colors using cm7 themes
For sense, I would think that you might need to modify some of the framework directly but I'm not sure as to how to do that.
More explanation to what I'm really thinking of !

Guys...
The issue is starting to turn me crazy on android but I'm still insisting on making it work, I've previously submitted a question with all what I need to make...here you are my previous post with screenshots:

When I found that there is nothing ready made for what I want, I thought I'd make it myself, I started studying procedures for compiling, adb pushing, editing xml files responsible for the items I need to modify...
I know that removing the "Carrier Name" AND WHOLE BOX WITH THE CLEAR Button depends on Status_bar_expanded.xml (in systemui.apk), I need to know what shall I modify to reach what I want as in the screenshots, I tried zillions of things and got stuck many times in botting and I've been recovering and recovering and recovering the whole day
Soooo....any clues ?

You should not post your questions there.
You can not change the icon size or bar size. They needs some new codes and options which is beyond my reach. U need a good dev. Carrier name can be removed. But it needs lots of research as nothing is written in english in the smali, it sucks. If I can do it I ll tell U. I seen ur that post in the morning. Just didnt know what to say.

This is the main reason I stick with PA. If someone can mod the framework of the rom you are using, it may be option, but most of the roms don't have that built in. You might mention it in the thread of the rom you use and see if someone can hook you up.
Yeah, I'm wondering if maybe you can copy and paste the frameworks folder from PA rom to the other rom and if that would activate the on screen buttons.
I doubt that would be a good idea, but I'm not the one to answer that one.

@Phantom: according to this thread it's just a matter of decompiling framework-res.apk, making some changes and then recompiling the whole thing, which is why I'm thinking maybe it is as simple as copying/pasting the apk.
@Tricsuit: Yeah, I know. I already learned my lesson and before attempting stupid ideas like this one, I run a full back up of the rim, settings, apparently and data, and then make sure to save the back up file in my box to be able to retrieve it from my computer just in case something else hiccups.

Yeah, I'm on call for the next couple of days so I won't be able to play with the rom, but if I'm able to make it work I'll post it here.
Welp, I began to toiler around with this, succeed in decompiling res-framework.apk, changing the bools, arrays and dimens values and added the menu images, basically all the way down to step 5, but I can't seem to recompile it back into .apk... uhm... a little help guys? ^^;
