[CHALLENGE] Enable ICS to show 1X / 3G - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Back in the days of Gingerbread nivron created this excellent tutorial on how to enable 1X / 3G to display correctly in the status bar.
Now that most people are moving over to ICS, the 1X/3G issue returns. It also seems that the files have been changed and rearranged. The smali edits are no longer located in StatusBarPolicy.smali. In fact, that file is gone completely in ICS.
I was able to locate 2 files that seem to contain the variables that need to be changed to fix the issue: TelephonyIcons.smali and NetworkController.smali. Since I am not a developer or a Java programmer, I wouldn't know how to approach the code. So if anyone is willing to take on this challenge, it would be greatly appreciated. The files are attached to the post for your viewing/editing pleasure.

OH YEA!! I have asked about this in several posts since I went to ICS. If other folks are wanting this mod, please speak up and let others know this is a desired mod...

I would love to see this in CM9 if it were possible.

The 3G/1X is in CM9 by default. I will look into the ICS leaks tomorrow and see where the change needs to be... unless someone does it first.

You're going to want to grab maddoggin's stock framework-res and policy.jar. Then you can theme that framework-res.
I actually had to change alot if things to get it to work with sfr1.2 and eb resurrection.

It is not enabled in framwork, the images are added in framework, but you need to edit androidpolicy.jar, but I don't know the changes that need to be made . But my problem was when I tried to theme it, even though I replaced all the correct images I still got FC's in some areas.

Haha remember back when I first released Nebula?
I had a ton o' problems! I couldn't get the menu colors to change and **** kept force closing... And you just sat there!
Kidding.
OP: Use the stock or simply blue as a template. Adding specific files would be an annoying process. Theme/add the files that you would normally be changing and whip them in with the template.
Off-topic: to Mystery, eccoce, and other themers, I am having trouble getting application icons to stick. And now my wallpaper is not sticking. Some that look good on stock don't show up on SRF. The wallpaper shows up on stock but doesn't on Frankenstein... Any idea what is causing this?
There are also xml files in the framework. What I did was build the theme just how I wanted it. After that I copied the jar file, all of the unlock images and all of the unlock xml files from simply blue. I modified some of the unlock images and that was it. Granted my theme is simple so that made it easier.

you realize I got it to work on my rom and I also got it to work on my theme. The amount if work I had to do to get it to work is alot to type.
I had to transfere xmls &pngs to a 100% stock framework-res.apk. I also had to modify other xmls and then I had to android.policy.jar.
If I am to go into details it would take me hours to write one post and it wouldn't be 100% gurante it would work for him cause then there is going to be changes he is going have to make to work with his theme cause my edits may contradict some of his.
So unless you know the full story you can just keep your mouth shut or tell him your self how you did it

Yeah, I saw what an undertaking it was. I used the existing gb puzzle theme as my base, but it slowed the gb Rom down to a crawl. Then i got a bunch of bugs to fix at work.
When I have time, I'll look at it again, cuz i want to get more into android (i.e., give back)

Just remember it took maddogin month to port. It took me 2 weeks to port to the rom and I just spent 4 hours last night trying to iron out more bugs

Can do like I normally do when porting to a new firmware (ie EC05 to EF02). Decompile the jar and dex, then do a directory diff between maddoggins and your jar. I use winmerge. Then start figuring out what are the differences for the firmware, and the differences for the mod... and just copy mod differences over...
Thx. I'm busy trying to muddle through facebook documentation, atm. Not sure when I'll pick this back up, but I was planning on doing a diff on th jar.

I'm interested. A dev (sonnysekhon) is working on an ICS theme for cm7, so we could use that as our base.
This is his theme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310925
Obviously, there are a few bugs with some of the icons at the top, but once those are fixed, it's almost drag and drop for us. (for some things...since it's not tw based, which you already know)

I've heard sdk ports are wonky. And I could imagine I went looking through the dump and the damn thing is practically empty. It has images so that people can at least at most theme the status bar, but no roaming images or anything else for that matter. So odd.

Yes I completely agree, after looking through the framework and SystemUI dump its only partial at best. I was hoping to find some new ringers/ui/notifications but that was empty except for 2 files.
Did anyone notice that they had battery meter pngs in the SystemUI.apk? WTF is that about, and they still remained in the framework too... Strange...
I thought about building a theme on the NS4G but after looking at the missing pieces and stuff I decided to pass until a more complete dump is available.
Did notice many new additional pngs in the framework now to play with that we didn't have before.. Overlays, and different glows to inputs/keys... Misc here and there...
Good luck guys, post a boat load of screenies so we can see what it looks like when you have something to flash

[DEV] Rotating capacitive buttons for ICS and other builds

Credits goes to st.matt, he gets full credit for the programming. He seemed a little busy, so I thought I'd spread the news so you guys can implement into your builds.
st.matt said:
Also just a run-down of how it works for anyone that is interested:
I use three different elements to get it working. Firstly, I use a small addition to surfaceflinger to set a system property (sys.orientation.landscape) to 1 when it is in landscape mode (either 90 or 270 degrees rotation) and 0 when it is in portrait mode (0 degrees rotation).
When this is set an init service will start depending on the value of sys.orientation.landscape, which in turn starts a script (/system/etc/rotate_lights.sh) which takes the brightness value from the expected led class (ie. if it's changing to landscape it will look at /sys/class/leds/button-backlight-portrait/brightness) and then set this to the new orientation's led class.
The third part is a small modification to the lights lib which also checks that system property when making changes to the button backlight brightness so that it sets it to the correct class.

The necessary files/code are on Virtuous' ICS vivo repository: https://github.com/vivo-ICS/android_device_htc_vivo, and you will also need the patched proprietary libsurfaceflinger.so that references to the changes.

made a CM7.2 kang for you Inc2 users.
All I did was put in the latest commits as of March 03 2012 and added the rotating softkeys. I can't really test it because I don't have an Inc2, so back up your data in case you are not sure if it will work.
You can flash this without wiping if you are on 7.x already.
For the IncS, I know the rotating buttons for them are not perfect. Sometimes you have to toggle the brightness to get it working. Other times it might take a few seconds to rotate instead of immediately. This is because this script was originally written for ICS roms in mind, but it's backwards compatible with GB.

its different for miui, because we dont build it from source and cant cherry pick commits
miui is more like a sense rom port that uses cm9 or another aosp rom as a "base"
any significant changes have to be done in smali, which is more involved than java source....i k nowwhat has to be changed (or at least part of it) and where for rotating buttons in miui by diffing the builds from aerovan before and after it was implemented but it was a no go on my part...and didnt seem worth the effort to keep pursuing it atm
I tried this yesterday. My phone wouldn't get past the HTC boot screen. I ended up having to pull the battery and reflash my current ROM.

Hmm, well I guess that didn't work. If you push /system/lib/libsurfaceflinger.so from an earlier working build you should probably be able to boot.
I just copied the file over from the vivo build which seems that it doesn't work with the vivow.
Guess the vivow surfaceflinger is done differently.

Just tried a flash over but didnt work for me. I guess I can always try a wipe and install.
This wouldn't be hard to add to Miui -- as long as they have no weird additions to libsurfaceflinger. You just need the patched liblights, patched libsurfaceflinger (built for CM), script in /system/etc and changes to init.vivo.rc (or init.vivow.rc for Inc2).
Requires no changes to smali or framework.
The other thing is that if someone wants to clean it up and submit it to CM then the MIUI team will pick it up themselves (someone already did this but didn't seem to have to skill / couldn't be bothered to clean it up to their standards and also didn't really submit it correctly).
I would do this but I don't really have the time these days.
Also: I suspect the problem with the lights not working sometimes could be solved just by adding the conditional I have that checks first to see if the brightness is zero to both orientations (in rotate_lights.sh). I will have a quick look at this soon.
just wanted to share a slight modification in the script. When the brightness level is set to the least the leds turn off completely. The attached script makes sure the leds do not turn off completely at this instance. Unzip the file and replace the file in your /etc/ folder. You may want to make a backup of your existing rotate_lights.sh just in case. Ensure the permissions on the file are the same as before after copying.
Just realized that the settings work only the first time when the phone is rotated. I guess I need a better fix. Sorry, remove the attachment as it has undesired issues. Fix No damn good.

[Q] Possible phantom voicemail fix

I'll give this a try when I get a chance.. Not sure if it'll work on ICS or not though.
Edit:
I went ahead and did it... And it seems to work! Great work finding that thread, the phantom voicemail notification was the one major issue I've had with CM9.
Here it is:
Phantom VM Fix for CM9 Beta 0 (Changed link to new thread)
Just flash it in CWM. Should not need to clear cache.
Let me know if it works for you. Make sure to create a backup of your Phone.apk beforehand, just in case something is broken that I haven't noticed yet.
If everything seems to work OK for you I'll probably create a new thread and keep it updated for the latest versions of CM9.

Yeah, it can be a little tricky with ICS system APK's. It is usually the plurals.xml, or dimens.xml files that need a little editing to get it to compile properly.
Sweet....first time I haven't had a vm notification since the switch to ics...big props....thanks a ton
Looks like its working on my end as well. Thanks for the help! For sure one of the annoying parts of CM9 wish I could hit the thanks button a hundred times.

This is the main reason I stick with PA. If someone can mod the framework of the rom you are using, it may be option, but most of the roms don't have that built in. You might mention it in the thread of the rom you use and see if someone can hook you up.
Yeah, I'm wondering if maybe you can copy and paste the frameworks folder from PA rom to the other rom and if that would activate the on screen buttons.
I doubt that would be a good idea, but I'm not the one to answer that one.

@Phantom: according to this thread it's just a matter of decompiling framework-res.apk, making some changes and then recompiling the whole thing, which is why I'm thinking maybe it is as simple as copying/pasting the apk.
@Tricsuit: Yeah, I know. I already learned my lesson and before attempting stupid ideas like this one, I run a full back up of the rim, settings, apparently and data, and then make sure to save the back up file in my box to be able to retrieve it from my computer just in case something else hiccups.

Welp, I began to toiler around with this, succeed in decompiling res-framework.apk, changing the bools, arrays and dimens values and added the menu images, basically all the way down to step 5, but I can't seem to recompile it back into .apk... uhm... a little help guys? ^^;
