Do we have nandroid with full backup/restore of all partitions working yet?
If so, some instructions would be greatly appreciated
we wont have nandroid until we have a custom recovery image and possibly full /system access
So... are we seeing any progress in the nandroid department yet?
I distinctly remember seeing a twitpic (from Paul?) of a Desire running custom recovery image so that shouldn't be a problem.
What's holding it back?

I'm sure he said it wasn't a recovery image, but just an app/script. In any case, if we run the recovery script we have the NAND backup/restore options amongst the others (wipe/partition/etc).

Can you elaborate on this please? You can write /system (and probably any other partition) from within the recovery.
Run the step2.sh from Paul's given files, and you'll see a quick adb shell and mount /system gives full rw to /system.
Really? And it's fully working?
I've been reluctant to try other roms until I knew nandroid was a go.
So just to be crystal clear - I can take a nandroid backup of EVERYTHING, the full stock-rom incl. every partition and restore it later just as easily?

Nope (unless you invent/modify the method yourself using the RUU and recovery shell - not 100% sure it's possible). You can only nandroid what's on there past Pauls rootedupdate.zip if you use his instructions.

Too bad. nandroid is damn handy when you'r messing around with custom roms!
Nandroid make full back as usual. I used it many times without any issues when playing with different desire roms.

Im new to this so let me get this right, I currently have a rooted stock ROM by Paul using the original linux rooting method. Can I use nandroid to back up this up and then flash a cooked ROM and if I do not like it then I can use the back up to reflash back to where I was?

Yes. If you nandroid restore, it will be as if absolutely nothing has changed (excluding any SD card data changes).

I still need to push the recovery files in order to get into the recovery menu in order to flash etc. Will that mean I cant nandroid my current ROM?
That's something I've wondered for a bit - can you push the recovery files (step 2) without doing step 1? And if so, can you trigger a nandroid backup on it?
I don't THINK you can, but I skipped it entirely, so it might be worth trying. Worst thing that happens is it fails, right? Can you get into recovery without rooting?

I cant get into the custom recovery menu without pushing the recovery files so I think we need a custom ROM to be able to get into the recovery menu directly from the phone.

Yes, this is exactly what I did. I have a recovery.sh file which is just step2.sh without the push of rootedupdate.zip each time.

what does this mean?
I think that most of customized ROM support ext4 partition and release A2SD/CM7/A2E version.
And many apps or data are moved to /sd-ext.
Is there any good backup app or Recovery can backup /sd-ext partition and save to sdcard?
Sometimes I don't want to recovery all ROM and do restore data/apps things again and again.
Use ROM Manager, which could backup sd-ext individually.
But this function only shown in Premium version.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesnt Recovery menu offer that function? (Backup and restore menu)
I use the recovery menu that was flashed by RomManager (2.5.0.7 or something), and it is able to do a full backup (aka nandroid backup? I'm new so not sure about terms)

Do not use rom manager. It carts more problems than out solves.

The way I backup is following:
1st step:
Titanium Backup. Use this to backup all my app/data/settings.
2nd step:
Set up Google Backup if supported (that way Market knows what apps i had and starts installing them after a wipe) Does not always work however, hence the step1.
3rd step:
Reboot phone into recovery menu, "backup and restore > Backup". This backs up following: system, rom, ext partition (if any) and also recovery/bootloader.
Using these steps, i can restore only my apps/settings (step 1) on a new rom or do a complete restore if something doesnt work right (step 3). Step 2 is handy If i want a fresh start but it doesnt always work right.

4rd step:
after the backup with the step 3, u can go in the advanced restore menu, and restore only the partition u want..for example restore only the sd-ext (as the OP was asking)

No matter ROM manager or new Recovery, the problem is to support /sd-ext backup/restore especially I always format to ext4.
I installed ROM manager once, but it can not backup/resotre my ext4 partiton.
It might be 2 month ago, and I removed ROM manager.
Did anyone have the experience to backup/resotre ext4 and which Recovery version?

That's a pretty close analogy. Only difference is I don't think it captures partitions...but I'm not sure about that. (It's not clear to me, for instance, if you did a nandroid of a phone with the EXT4 mod implemented and tried to install it on a phone without the EXT4 mod, exactly how that would play out.)
As an example, though, I took a nandroid of my stock phone immediately after I rooted it and got S-off. I then played around with various CM7, CM9, and JB ROMs for a weekend, but reloaded the stock nandroid Sunday night before going back to work on Monday. (I need a reliable phone for work.)
My phone was restored to exactly the way it was when I took the nandroid snapshot. I had to re-download a handful of app updates and email that had arrived since the time I took the nandroid to "catch up" to the present time, but that's all.

It is everything on your phone at the current time when you made a backup. Including your rom, apps, files, boot animation and e.t.c.

Thanks for the clarifications and the personal experience story. It helps calm my nerves. :fingers-crossed: Now it is clear that the nandroid is a full snapshot, close to being a clone image.
Can anyone address MysticCobra's point about the EXT4 partition?
As a rule, I have followed ROM Manager app's recommendation to partition the sdcard to allow apps to be stored on it. This is what the EXT4 partition is designed to do, as far as I understand such things.
If I format the sdcard with EXT4 (which in my experience wipes out all data on the card), and then restore a nandroid that came from an older EXT4-formatted sdcard of the same size or smaller than the new sdcard, would the nandroid restoration go smoothly?

Nandroid backup/restores don't touch the sdcard. They backup to the sdcard but the nandroid only handles /system, /data, /data/data, /cache, boot, and recovery.
The ext4 partition is not the same as the ext4 mod that MysticCobra mentioned. The mod converts /data, and /cache to ext4 and changes the ramdisk to mount them as ext4. The no data limit one also disables the mounting /data/data so the phone will share the apps and app data with a 750MB. Your app data is intact with the no data limit mod but a backup is still advised. No wipe updates don't touch the filesystem in /data or /cache but the mod may need to be flashed again for the ROM to boot correctly as the ramdisk is overridden on all updates. Technically with the normal data one you are good on later cm7 and ICS/JB ROMs as it's already ext4.
If you want to undo the mod the best thing is to wipe /data and /cache and reflash the ROM.

So here's the thing: I made a TWRP backup of my 16GB nexus before I returned it yesterday (multitouch issues, dead pixels) but see now that people are reporting an OTA update that fixes the multitouch issue. I would rather not restore that backup since it is the JSS15J system, so is there a way I can get the data of at least a few apps and restore them individually somehow?

If it's not compressed (I never do), TiBu can do it perfectly.
In Titanium backup pro in it's menu is the option to 'extract from nandroid backup' .
Did it just last week, so I know the current version works.

Use Nandroid Backup Manager. It's free.
It can restore apps and/or data, SMS messages, Call logs and more from your nandroid backup. It can also decompress the backup if it's compressed.
Advance Restore and just click restore data only on twrp

TWRP backups each partition separately, thus it can also restore any single partition so also /data

Of course. TWRP has no advanced backup&restore features because it doesn't need them: you will be prompted before each backup&restore action about the partitions.
For data of just single apps use better Titanium Backup. It can extract them from your nandroid backups

I think some of the gapps data is flashed to system, so it won't be able to completely restore it but after flashing gapps, you should be able to extract google apps with data intact from TWRP backup

Exactly what I do.
marsmallow 6 will update apps + data from your google account. Not sure it's fully implemented yet but it's supposed to work. I've tried it yesterday with a Mm6.0.1 on nexus 7 2013 and many apps were already configured. Not all of them. Going from MM6 to MM6.0.1 might complicate it so maybe it's better to restore with google and do a little work by yourself, to make sure. I gave up on those restore apps. It also give you the opportunity to do a clean up

Forget Nan managers, tar.extractors & the insanely complex Bash terminal commands
1. Go to File manager on TWRP recovery, it can read the system data i.e. data/data/ file (while your other file managers can,only data files on SD or ext.SD)
2.Go to data/data and locate the data folder of the app you wish to extract; will be in the format 'com.app name'
3.Push 'Select folder' tab on the screen; it gives you option to COPY the file
4.Move up & paste the data/data file on your readable memmory: sd/ext.SD
And that's it!! Just connect to the PC & pull the file & there u have: your APP DATA FILE!

And believe me, I could repack the data into my new ROM just like that!
Not sure if this messes up with your system but I'm going great so far.
So you Upgraded to a higher OS and find some of your apps to be crashing on your new ROM & have a nandroid of your stock:
You are going to switch data files between stock & custom ROM!
1.Flash the Stock ROM & copy app data from the system files to readable memory, as mentioned above, just add a letter & Rename the copy(which again you can do with TWRP!) so that TWRP may not confuse with the new folder
2.Flash the new ROM, uninstall the app that crashes & install the compatible version from the store
3.Allow storage permission from settings; open the app & perform some action so that a storage directory is created,if not already, in the system storage
4.Boot to TWRP recovery in the new ROM , so now you have the data/data folder of the new app you just installed(which is empty) as well as the data/data folder from your stock ROM on your SD/Ext.SD
5. You know were this is going[emoji16] Delete the data/data folder on your running ROM & MOVE(again with TWRP only!) the one from SD ,after restoring its original name, to the data folder from were you just deleted the other.
6.Wipe Dalvik/caches & reboot
7. Other than receiving a pop up that there may be some trouble with your android system, on startup, everything works just fine for me & the App is fully restored!![emoji7]

I don't understand this step. I go to file manager, then navigate to /external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/... and there are files like data.f2fs.win009. Now what?

i kinda messed up my phone a little after trying to upgrade my firmware. I must have flashed the wrong one.
Fortunately i can get into the bootloader, recovery and even start a custom rom.
Unfortunately some things are broken there:
-BT not working
-cant install any apps from store
-some other things
now i tried to reset my phone to complete stock using a nandroid backup from the forum
i dragged it on my phone, twrp sees it and when i try to install it i cant choose the partitions to restore.
When i swipe it i get the Error:
E: no partitions selected for restore
i made a nandroid backup of my broken rom and i can flash this without any problems
maybe im trying to use the wrong nandroid? i tried several but i always get that message. What came to my mind is that there are some files missing in the nandroid backups i downloaded. its about all the 0byte .tar files. Are these interchangeable so i can just try to use copy the ones i have to the nandroid backup i want to install?
Can someone please tell me which nandroid backup i should get?

The bootloader 3.16 indicates your phone is on 1.12 or 1.54 software
any of these should work for VODAP102

I would try the first one first and be sure and check the MD5 of the files you download. It may also be worth your time to update to the latest version of TWRP

where are you putting the extradited files ?
they go in TWRP/BACKUPS/YourSerialnumber/nandroidyoudownloaded
in TWRP you can chang where it looks for the backup by simply click the word internel storage xxxxxmb or external sd xxxxxmb or usb_otg xxxxxmb
just choose where you put the nandroid you downloaded

thanks for all the help, i feel stupid now - i had a folder too much in the recovery folder :/
now everything seems to work properly and im also on the right firmware

I found this thread and post my problem here cause I have the exact same problem.
I made an backup with the "online nandroid backup" app ant want to restore it with TWRP.
I put the folder in TWRP\backups\myserial\ and it is available in the restore menu in TWRP. But when I try to use it the message is shown!
What can I do? Do I have to flash CWM to use my backup?

hi @all i solved this problem ...I hope it will be helpful......
the backup must be in only one folder!!!! ex: twrp:\backups\myserial\here put the folder with the file in it...not a folder and subfolder

Hey, I have the same issue, a folder with a subfolder, but I'm not sure how to fix the problem...any help?

Never mind, got it sorted. It always feels better when you work at it and figure it out yourself. Thanx sarumans for the point in the right direction.

you have to copy only the subfolder in the twrp - backup folder.....

Hello, ive the same problem. I did factory data reset and while reseting, phone lagged i waited 20 minutes but nothing changed so i unplugged battery and now phone boots only in bootloader and fastboot TWRP, when i want to restore files from my back up it sais no partition selected for restore please help!

After selected the desired backup folder to restore, did you actually "check" the boxes for the partitions (Boot, System, Data) you want to restore (before you do Swipe to Restore)?
there is actually no box like this or i just look in the wrong place. To do restore i go to bootloader then recovery, restore and i just select the backup folder i dont know where schould i check that boxes.

Probably can't help any further, since I am know seeing you have a phone that is pretty old. This forum section is specific to the M8.

YOU my friend are an absolulte BEEEEEEEEAUTY!!!!
Everywhere that I checked other than here, simply stated that the backup file had to be in the BACKUP folder.
After two days of failure with multiple attempts to install different roms for my S4 (I know, wrong thread) I resorted to the 'Restore' option. I was losing my mind until I found this post of yours. That 'YourSerialNumber' step is crucial.

Easy and useful trick, is to use TWRP to make a backup. For instance, go into TWRP, select Backup, check Boot partition only (assuming your device has that - I don't know much about the S4), which is probably just 10-20 Mb.
TWRP will construct the proper folder structure to save the Boot backup. You can then copy the downloaded nandroid to the same location.
You can put several backup folders in twrp:\backups\myserial\backup1, backup2
But remember (no sub-folders)
**backup1 and backup2 are two different backups. You can also rename folders for your ease but you can't rename (myserial folder) otherwise it will disappear.

Useful info. I personally like to rename the backup folders (after TWRP generates the backup) with details about the ROM, date, etc. such as: "Stock Rooted Magisk (2-2-18)".
I know TWRP auto creates a file name, with the date and time of when the backup is made. But I still like to change the date format to something that is easier for me to understand. Plus some details on what exactly the backup contains (rooted or not, stock or custom ROM, etc.).

Sure.
TWRP -> BACKUP -> choose BOOT only -> execute
now check where the image was saved eg: ext: /TWRP/BACUPS/XXXXXXXXXX/DATA.../files
now delete what is in the XXXXXXXXXX folder and move your folders there from the path / TWRP / BACKUPS / YYYYYYYYYYY /
this is because it was re-uploaded TWRP and now have a different backup path (folder XXXXXXXXXX)
