Is it possible for me to flash the sprint hotspot (ek02) odex using the stock android recovery? I have root.
Someone said that I should be able to put the zip file in the root directory and going into the recovery (vol up, and power) and picking to install it from sd. When I do that it fails saying "signature verification fail".
Do I need the CWM to do this? Please help. Thank you in advance.
i dont think stock recovery works you need cwm

OK. Got it...got everything working now. 4g hotspot is pretty fast! Will have to do some more testing.
Would like to thank you, and everyone who helped me get this going and to the people who made the hack and the tools, and the video tutorials. Crawrj, sfhub, chris41g, qbking77...And I'm sure many more people involved. Thank you.
Just wondering if anyone had been caught using this method of free tethering because I just came over from ATT and they are like tether nazis

Not sure why but the .tar file is followed by a .md5 extention, so I just removed it and it became a .tar, just for others to know, thanks
the md5 extension is so you know it hasnt been messed with, and so you know the download is not corrupt...
odin flashes md5s and checks the downloads...
What would be the benefit of flashing this versus your other similar kernel? Sorry if this is a stupid question....
Thank you so much. This is perfect. Do have a question. Does this have a new version of cwm or the same one from yesterday? I ask cause the back soft button wasn't working and the storage mounts were reversed. Just checking to see if that has been fixed.

It is the same just without root and busybox. He made it for those of us that prefer having root controlled at the system level versus the kernel. You don't lose anything either way. If you use this you have to make sure you are running an already rooted rom. There is less conflict by doing this since most, if not all, roms are already rooted.

Once again thanks for you help. One last stupid question before I retire from stupidity, but how do I know which way I am rooted? I thought the only way to root was FROM the kernel. I ask because I'm specifically on midnight rom v2 and have no clue which way I'm rooted.
Is there any way someone could upload a mirror to a different site? I'm wanting to flash this but I'm at work and my company is blocking the site that the link is for. If you can that would be awesome if not, no big deal. I'll try and get it when I get home.
Edit: Nevermind. Managed to get it from my phone.
I can up it to megaupload if that helps Tiffany.
Link deleted.

Just curious, if someone has flashed chris' previous kernel, what benefit is there supposed to be? Is it not the same stock kernel with some tweaks? Especially if you're concerned with losing root. Not singling anyone out, just curious as to the rationale.

Because kernels that have forced copying of root & busybox cause issues when you start using complete custom ROMs because they overwrite files that are already included. Plus if your including a custom recovery, what the point of including root, etc when the user can now flash what they want?
Also, Chris, the recovery you have included in this won't mount the internal storage or even make a backup to it or recover, it only wants to use the external sd card and since I don't use one because of the delay it causes coming from sleep, I can't do anything except test flash stuff
I flashed this around noon and once my phone rebooted, I updated my 'profile' under 'about phone'. Everything seemed fine, an hour later...I had a LOS, rebooted and got it back, an hour later, same thing...LOS. Rebooted and I updated the profile again, it's fine for now.
Do we have to update profile every time we do a reboot??
Didn't have any issues when in stock.

OTA updates don't work with CWM, you have to reinstall the stock recovery.

The easiest way BY FAR is stay rooted and flash the LI3 equivalent to the OTA by Freeza
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743923
After flashing the ROM with CWM, also flash the Team Epic Root from Recovery. This will keep your root.
Reboot and you are good to go. Rooted with CWM and you will no longer be prompted for OTA.

Which zip would not flash in recovery?
The only zip you will flash in recovery is team epic root from recovery. And it must be flashed in the recovery that was installed with Odin.
If you let the phone restart after flashing recovery in Odin the custom recovery will be replaced by the stock recovery.

As a TOTAL noob: appreciate the easy explanation! Waiting to do this myself, but have a few quick questions first. I've done a lot of reading up on rooting but I'm still not entirely clear on a few things so I'm hoping someone can explain it to me like I'm five:
1. Can I accept over-the-air updates from Sprint on a rooted phone? i.e. when they push Android 4.2. If not, do I unroot and reroot to update? Do I have to uninstall everything?
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?
Thanks so much!!

This is not going to be a straight up yes or no answer. If an update comes ota to your phone, you will be able to receive it providing you:
1. reflash stock recovery before accepting it.
2. haven't flashed a custom rom
3. haven't removed any required software. The ota will look for certain software and files. if the required software and files aren't present the ota will fail
None of this should concern you though. There are ALWAYS ways to get the updates while being rooted
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
These instructions seem like you are doing many things. You aren't. There are really only 5 steps. I just broke all the steps down in detail. Really all this is:
1. Downloading all the files to your computer
2. Installing your Samsung Drivers to your computer
3. Copying one file to your phones sd or external sd card. (Team_Epic Root_From Recovery)
4. Flashing CWM Recovery to your phone with Odin.
5. Flashing TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip with CWM Recovery
The Team Epic File that you are flashing in recovery installs superuser, busy box, and in addition removes two files needed to make recovery stick.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?
Rooting is really nothing more than giving you the user, the right to access root or system files. It has very little to do with flashing as you can flash updates with stock recovery.
Flashing is simply installing something in a tar, img, or zip format. tar files are flashed with Odin, zips are flashed from recovery and img files are flashed or pushed with adb (Android Debug Bridge)or fastboot.
Cyanogen is a rom. roms are very simply the phones operating system and user interface. They're called roms because their files are kept on read only memory. There are many roms out there for our phone.
Awesome, appreciate the prompt response - thanks so much!!
Thanks!
Thanks for putting this together. My new gs3 arrives tomorrow and I have already prepped my computer with your files in anticipation.
I'll report back how it works out.
Thanks again!
One more thing
When I do get my phone should I activate it first or root it first or does it matter?
I know it voids the warranty but I guess I could unroot to take it in for service if needed?
Thanks again.

I would activate it.
This works with the 4.1 update, correct?
I previously had the Galaxy S1 (Epic) and went through several custom ROMs before finally going back to a stable release with root because of dissatisfaction with the ROMs. My phone never really returned to perfect functionality after this experimentation, and always had some buggy glitches and many FC's. Now that I have a perfectly running GS3 with Android 4.1, I would love to be able to wifi tether and install apps like adblock and Titanium Backup Pro, but I am hesitant because of my past experience.
Do you think there is any reason at all that simply doing this root procedure would change the functionality of my perfectly smooth-running GS3?
Hey guys sorry for posting this thread. I've tried reading others about the same situation im going thru, but phones are different. So im rooted, I think I'am. I did the RWilco one click method for the sph-d710vmub. everything went great phone rebooted perfect turned on and I have the superuser app. Im running on android 4.0.4 Fl26 (stock). My recovery mode saids ACSRecovery5 v1.0.0.0 CWM5 based.
Now every time i try using a rooted access app. Dosnt let me at all not super user, barnacle, mobil odin, Titanium back up.
I tried flashing roms, saids installation aborted.
Can anyone tell me if im actually rooted or not?
And if so how can I get root permission so i can get these apps going, and I can flash my ass away.
Im really anxious to see my phone full potentials and Im really doing this to change my sg2 theme.
So thats my reason for root. Im a complete noob, but I got this far after almost bricking my phone/

You are not rooted if apps won't pull it. You don't need root to theme. There are plenty of launchers. Since you seem to have a CWM, you can flash a rooted ROM.

I just got my 2nd GS3 and attempted to root via Odin but when I booted into CW after to flash I kept receiving the message "E: can't mount /external_sd!" whenever I tried to "install from external sd." I also noticed that while in "Download Mode" in the top left corner under the normal status's was "QUALCOMM SECURE BOOT ENABLED" in grey. Now i never saw that on my first GS3 when in "Download Mode."
Rebooting phone and there was no root/SU application installed.
I then attempted to gain root via Odin again but this time I used the "CF Auto-Root" method and after the reboot my phone properly showed the screen with the RED Android and script. But after scrolling thru app drawer I could not find the SU app.
In conclusion I believe that the "QUALCOMM SECURE BOOT ENABLED" is preventing the root. So I have spent 3hrs combing thru forum after forum and any evidence to support my claim or disprove it. Can anyone give answers of some use???

Since it's one of the Newer S3's you need a different version of CWM /TWRP. It's because of a change that Samsung did. You can find the Modified Recoveries that you need HERE. Then you should be all good to gain Root.
