New news about ICS for us A100's? - Acer Iconia Tab A100

As the title says, I've been reading and hearing rumors around that we might get a bite of that delicious ice cream sandwich, but I haven't been able to find any latest information about it. Have any of you guys heard or read anything, or if anyone knows it's actually confirmed that we'll get it any time this month? I personally think it would be amazing for us to get it, I mean, the A100 meets all the requirements and specs to run ICS, if it's able to run Honeycomb, then why not run ICS? Discuss below!

to the best of my knowledge, the only confirmation that the a100 will get ICS is from an acer rep in Poland.
I have not seen any definitive word from Acer about it.
The fact that it could run it is not to say that they will do it.
They may decide to do it on a the new versions ,and not to bother for the 'Old" versions,I understand that there is a replacement for a500 coming out soon,so theA100 replacement wont be far behind!!

well from what i've been seeing around is that the a200 is coming out on the 15th, but we'll see what happens, i hope we can get it.

I dont think we will have this update but normally, 3.2 or 4.0 still look same, just a little bit new things in UI

I think I read February and hoping it will be sooner. I have a transformer prime and it just updated to ICS. ICS makes everything smooth along with some GUI changes. The only issue is some apps do not work and needs to be updated to be compatible.

i really do hope we can get it, i personally like having the latest updates on my devices.

According to Acer Poland, they will roll it out to the A100 this month.

Once we get it I suggest dl OTA root keeper which might let us keep root. It worked on the transformer prime. I'm also hoping by then most if the apps are ICS compatible. Well I'm praying actually.

Not sure what apps you are running but all the apps I run on my froyo phone works fine on ICS.

Hopefully they are still on track to have the ICS update out by the end of Jan. It would be really awesome if they could get it done/out soon so that AOSP development could get started

so when and IF acer do put out ICS update,we will then be back to release cycle,,given that some regions have waited months for the 3.21 update after that was released.

Given that Acer has been completeu silent about ICS for their existing Iconia series and only explicitly promised it for the A200 and A700, I'm not holding my breath. Especially as the only "proof" so far was what one site says Acer Poland told them. With no confirmation since.
And in the meantime, Archos is, of all the companies out there, announcing an ICS release on their existing G9 series tablets for February. Bloody ARCHOS is releasing an upgrade. Maybe I should've bought one of those.

I'm already thinking of than $250 Tegra 3 tablet Asus is coming out with. I'm currently leaning towards keeping this Iconia, but if ICS doesn't come and it looks like a dead end already, I'll probably jump on that.

I dont know if this helps or makes the confusion worse.....
Im still not 100% convinced, but I hope they are right.
James: hi, I have sent a couple emails regarding a question, but i am not certain my question is being understood correctly.
REP: I apologize for the inconvenience. Let me see what best can be done today.
REP: James, kindly explain the issue.
James: My question is regarding whether or not my tablet will be getting and update to Android 4.0. I understand that is has not been released as of yet, but I just need to determine if it will indeed be getting updated to the latest android software.
James: that being Android 4.0.
REP : James, all the updates of the tablet are automatic and will be released by air.
REP: This will be done automatically.
James: right, and i understand the process. I just need to know if it will be getting updated to the latest release in the future to determine whether or not to look at new options.
REP : Could you please rephrase the above question?
REP : James, if you are unable to explain it in the chat, you can contact the voice team.
James: My A100 currently runs Android 3.2.1. I know that Acer is releasing the A200 with an Android 4.0 update soon to follow. My question is, will the A100 be receiving an update to Android 4.0, or will I have to look at a new tablet to get that version?
REP: Definitely the A100 will update the Android to 4.0
REP : May I place you on hold for 3 minutes while I research this issue?
REP: Thank you for being on hold.
REP: James, we are not sure at the time what update will be available for the A100 however there will be an update released soon.
James: ok, thats what i need to know
REP : Alright.

Dont forget to threaten to return it for something that will run ICS...........

while your at it throw in a word to unlock the bootloader or give us a expliot to use...
If we had found a work around for the bootloader you would have had a copy of ics working in the form of cm9 a while back... should be an almost direct port from the a500.. just would have needed a custom kernel

So caught up in ICS this month, I didn't even consider asking about unlocked bootloader.....
It did work for the Tranformer Prime and HTC.
I demanded camera drivers from HTC the other day...."proprietary"

So, who is eagerly awaiting a brain freeze from the upcoming software from the Google guys? Any thoughts? Who's gunna have first crack at Modding it?

Isn't it due out around Xmas?
I know, but I'm excited and want to chat about it
sent from John Crichton somewhere in the Uncharted Territories
I for now only think that we might have a slight chance of getting a custom taste of it, because it certainly not gonna be a dual core only (if they don't want to **** with the Nexus S owners).
I think GB is the last update for the Desire - ICS may have some bits ripped off perhaps like Sense 3.0
I'm looking forward to seeing it, especially if it will be an upgrade to my Xoom - I'd be disappointed if it wasn't though still as I only just got the Xoom
I am sort of betting that GB will be that last official release for the Desire as well. I am probably going to be looking for a new phone with ICS.
I have 2 issues though:
1) I need to have real exchange support which probably means I cannot run an ICS Nexus unless google finally adds proper support in with ICS.
2) I want something high powered but do not want a screen size bigger then 4 inches.
Kind of disappointing for desire owners. I'd really prefer to stick with my phone cause its a good handset. I actually had to root my phone for GB cause my Telco are a bunch of bananas lol

Well, I built and flashed a working (kinda) Gingerbread ROM on the day that they pushed the source, and I knew pretty much jack about Android development then.
So hopefully, now I know a bit more, I'll have a decent working Ice Cream ROM on the day that the source is pushed, assuming they don't break backwards compatibility of the proprietary stuff our custom builds depend on.
That was the main problem with Gingerbread, the proprietary graphics libs were completely broken (white screen issue) and the camera lib wasn't particularly happy either.
Why can't they just release it now? I neeeeed to know if someone is able to backward it for desire!!!! GAAAAH!¡!! THE ANTICIPATION IS ALREADY KILLING ME!!!!!

It'll definitely be doable once they push the source and I'll say that with 100% certainty.
How well it works depends on what proprietary stuff they break.
If there aren't any massively disruptive deep changes and it is just an incremental update to Gingerbread then it should be reasonably easy to get working and it should work well.
Dude, that's awesome news. What I do next is out of geek love *hugs* lol I say again, awesome

[OTA info] Volume Bug Fix

Samsung are beginning to roll out the fix for the volume bug. https://twitter.com/#!/SamFirmware/status/140471495288823808
Any more info, like a date, when to expect the update?
Oh, wait, it's Samsung, so it will arrive "anytime soon", which means "by the end of November", which actually means "maybe November, but definitely in December"...
Nice, I should have my Nexus by Tues or Wednesday then.
Interesting it's a radio update, not Android or anything lower level.
How will the fix be delivered? direct to the handset via update or USB?
Too bad they don't seem to have a link to it.

OTA to the handset.
Once someone gets the OTA - they can pull it from a logcat and get the URL - then anyone can download apply without waiting for their IMEI to be flagged to receive the update.
Hm, but this doesn't seem to be an official Twitter account / Website of Samsung.

because it's referencing an increment to the baseband version, and not mentioning anything about an Android version number.
that being said, we don't know what's going to happen yet...

Because the name of the update is the name of the baseband, not Android.
I am pretty sure it will be more than just the radio, P3Droid tweeted on the 22nd about ICL52 and Adnroid 4.2 with a new baseband.... When though Samsung??!!
We were told the ICL53b update contained the fix, no mention of the baseband version. I can try to get more info but its a holiday weekend here so no idea if i will be able to reach him.

As has been proven the bug occurs when the phone is in the bootloader, so it's nothing to do with Android.
The patch needs to be at a hardware level, so it will be firmware update. That comes from Samsung, not Google.
It might be the case that the patch for this particular problem was developed by Samsung but it'll still be released by Google not Samsung. So we are waiting for both but ultimately it'll be Googles decision when to push it. At least that's my understanding of the update process of a Nexus phone.
some people in this thread need to remember a few things:
1) Nexus handsets are made as a collaboration between Google and whoever the chosen manufacturer is.
2) Google push all unbranded Nexus updates, not the manufacturer.
in the case of this update, it will likely be pushed as an update to Android anyway - I have never seen a baseband change come through to an Android handset without it being with an incremental update to Android.
I've got to the stage when I don't care who does what - all I want is an update so that the phone is usable. I suspect many early adopters think the same.
I agree mate. I don't care if apple make the fix. For me this weekend staying in London my phone was unusable in certain parts. Grrrrrrrr

A100 ICS Update News

Hi Everyone,
I was just on the phone with Acer Support to replace a broken charger (The tip of my current charger just sort of fell off once night, and I had to pull it out of the charging port using a small pin) and asked about ICS update.
The fellow mentioned that ICS should be out in Canada for May 3rd of this year. Sounds pretty reasonable? I think I'll stick to the official firmware for the meantime...

Just off the phone with ACER
Just got off the phone with ACER. Asked about the update for the A100. I asked when is it scheduled to come out, and have you an exact date on the OTA Update? I was told No. The customer service person was very Rude i might add. Also, i then followed up with, well your press release states it would roll out in mid April sometime, is that still the case? The response i received was Yes, well Maybe... Maybe I said, he said it may be in May sometime or it may be in April. He would not give any more information on this. Anyway, figured I would let the owners of the A100 know that we still are likely not to get this in April, given ACER`s track record for pushing back their release dates on previous tablets and updates.
Why do people think the zombie tech support people know when things are coming out or much anything else besides what is given to them in scripts to read off to customers -_-
ICS will come out when it comes out the leaks despite gaming bugs are great. Atleast we have leaked firmware the one phone I have (Sidekick 4g) ended up being a samsung shunned child that never saw the light of day getting official gingerbread let alone ics :c

Bhargav Pecchetti: I have checked and see that the Jelly bean update is still in development as soon as we release the update you will be able to download the update for your tablet,
yessssssssssssss
hehehehe totally trolled her with my name
Ever think that since you were obviously trying to troll them, they just BSed you so you'd get all excited, run to the forums post that we're getting it, then never get it?
Case in point, the G2x at one point was said to get ICS, this was like a year ago, not only did they never get it, they pulled it completely and they never will (officially).
Asking about an update to a new OS this quickly will almost always result in bad information, they could have confused it with the A110 instead of the A100 or considered them the same thing, when they aren't.
However if it's true, that is great news. We'll get Jellybean next year.
We won't ever get an official update to jellybean. Guarantee it.

The reason a lot doubt we'll get the update is most devices get 1 major update, and we had ours, that coupled with new devices replacing ours means we hit EOL. That of course doesn't mean we won't, but that's the way it usually plays out.
We can sit and speculate all we want, we won't know for sure until Acer releases a final list with us on or off it.

My reasoning, is considering how long ics took to get to us, by the time they realesed it android would be on 5.1.

And that's Asus. It really is up to Acer if they want to spend the money developing it for an EOL device. Its not a matter of will it run, we proved it will, its up to Acer to decide its worth their time and money, simple as that. Can't compare different devices from different companies for this kind of stuff.
Especially Asus against Acer.

Darn it! I thought it was JB since I read an article that US S3 was beeing updated over the OTA. Oh well..
chat with the ATT rep regarding JB rollout for ATT. This is the second reference I have gotten from a ATT rep that says the update may "affect the network" and that "if it does have an adverse affect it will not be released."
You are now chatting with 'Paul Goss'
Paul Goss: Thank you for completing the pre-chat survey. I will be happy to help you out with any of your issues today.
Paul Goss: Once it is made available to AT&T customer you will receive a text message letting you know.
RICHARD THOMAS: Just following up on a chat I had this AM. I understand you have nothing to do with the update but why can sprint roll out JB for the exact same device months earlier than ATT?
Paul Goss: Once the phone manufacturer releases the software we then test it over our network and once that is done we will then release for customers.
RICHARD THOMAS: by the release from sprint the software is or has been released by the manufacturer. The motorola Atrix fiasco has put a bad taste in my mouth. We were promised a update from motorola and ATT for almost a year and on the last day told we would not receive it. I just kind of get the feeling that ATT is going to do the same thing with this phone. I don't have much faith in ATT at the moment.
Paul Goss: Sorry you feel that way however before we can release we need to know how it will affect the network. Our network is much bigger and much more complex then Sprint there fore it requires more testing. if it does have an adverse affect then it will not be released.
RICHARD THOMAS: so we can expect to possibly NOT get a android Jelly Bean release?
Paul Goss: I have no knowledge or control over that. I can only say were in the process of testing it. The results are not given to us until it is released.
RICHARD THOMAS: you are the second tech that has told me that it might have an adverse effect on the network.
Paul Goss: Was there any other questions or concerns I can address today?
Paul Goss: Hopefully shortly we'll get notice that it is being released.
RICHARD THOMAS: no. Just a little disappointed in the amount of time that it is taking ATT to approve a software update on its customer's phones. Last anyone heard it wouldn't be until 2013
Paul Goss: Regretfully I can not comment on that as I have not been given that information.
Paul Goss: Once it is released you will be given notice.
RICHARD THOMAS: very well, thank you for chatting. please inform your supervisors that customers are getting irritated by the slow pace of updates. Not that anyone in corporate cares once they get our money.
Paul Goss: We do caret the last thing we want is for you to update the software and ending with a phone that does not work or work properly. I'm sure the last thing you want to do is go a week with out a phone while the company sends out a new one to replace the nonworking one.
RICHARD THOMAS: I agree just not convinced that is all.
RICHARD THOMAS: remember I had the motorola atrix that was abandoned half way through my contract.
RICHARD THOMAS: Thank you for taking the time to chat. I will not bother you further today.
Such a load of BS. This is obviously what they are instructed to tell people when they ask about updates to their phone. Guess what? People install custom ROMs on their phones and it doesn't "affect the network". Although at this point I wish it did and brought the network to its knees so AT&T corporate would actually get off their butts and do something.
I wouldn't sweat it. With sprint already releasing their version, we could see ours anyday now. I hope its by end of this weekend. Would make a nice surprise.

I'm already working on it. But there is a funky issue with the kernel I believe. When you hold the phone in landscape mode the screen is upside down. I'm going to try but from what I'm hearing from some kernel devs is that it can't be done without source

How about editing your thread title to "I jumped the gun" or something similar.
OP should have changed the title
