Hi Everyone,
I was just on the phone with Acer Support to replace a broken charger (The tip of my current charger just sort of fell off once night, and I had to pull it out of the charging port using a small pin) and asked about ICS update.
The fellow mentioned that ICS should be out in Canada for May 3rd of this year. Sounds pretty reasonable? I think I'll stick to the official firmware for the meantime...

I was Skyping with my daughter the other night on ics beta build 12 and I couldn't adjust the volumes... it was quite strange. I'll stick to official for now, just cuz it's right around the corner.
BTW they said for region of Canada May 3rd, so it might be different in other regions.

Just off the phone with ACER
Just got off the phone with ACER. Asked about the update for the A100. I asked when is it scheduled to come out, and have you an exact date on the OTA Update? I was told No. The customer service person was very Rude i might add. Also, i then followed up with, well your press release states it would roll out in mid April sometime, is that still the case? The response i received was Yes, well Maybe... Maybe I said, he said it may be in May sometime or it may be in April. He would not give any more information on this. Anyway, figured I would let the owners of the A100 know that we still are likely not to get this in April, given ACER`s track record for pushing back their release dates on previous tablets and updates.
Why do people think the zombie tech support people know when things are coming out or much anything else besides what is given to them in scripts to read off to customers -_-
ICS will come out when it comes out the leaks despite gaming bugs are great. Atleast we have leaked firmware the one phone I have (Sidekick 4g) ended up being a samsung shunned child that never saw the light of day getting official gingerbread let alone ics :c

Acer has posted some FAQs about when to expect the ICS update for their tablet models, which was why I was asking. Of course I was dealing with a different issue and the CS had the option to say "sorry sir, we don't have that information". I always expected to get the official update around my birthday; which is May 4th

After reading some forum posts from around here and other sites I'm starting to get really discouraged. I got this phone on December 4th, so I can return it on/before January 3rd. My other options are of course SGSII, SGSII SR, Vivid, and whatever phone pops up before now and then. Do you think I should return the Nitro for one of those options or wait and hope it gets ICS? ICS is a dealbreaker for me.
ICS.. Good news, i hope!
As per GSMArena and Bell Mobility's website, ICS will be available to its' customers confirmed, no answer though as to when. hope this clears it up a bit.
The thing with the updates is you never know. From all of the phones you listed, the likely fastest one to get the ICS update would probably be the Vivid based on HTC's speed at updating followed by the SGSII then skyrocket. Last on that list? Probably the Nitro HD. Given the things I've seen elsewhere with LG updating I wouldn't expect much, then again, you never really know with these things.
If this thing was just unlocked and able to boot into CWM recovery, it wouldn't be too hard to bribe some devs with devices to get some good ICS-based ROMs, I'm thinking. The Nexus S ICS ROMs have been pretty awesome, thus far, and that is with them still based on the 2.6.35 kernel.

Honestly, Samsung's gotten MUCH faster at updating.
Look at the SGS II, it already has a ICS leak, that says something.
Of all phones, I would expect the AT&TSGSII and SR to get it first, then Vivid, then Nitro, unfortunately. :/
The Thrill was supposed to have GB within a month of release. That was back in September. Then they promised October, then November...
I trust LG about as much as I trusta politician, and it's a shame because I'd LOVE to buy a Nitro but I won't because it's LG.
I won't really worry or sweat over the ICS....as long as this phone is unlocked, anything is possible, and we will have even better ROMs than vanilla ICS. Heck, we might even get CM9 support if the Devs feel it's worthy enough, and I'm sure they are eyeing the Nitro right now, just waiting for the right time. All we need is a single Dev joining us to spark the fire of interest with other Devs.
Does anybody know someone who knows the person behind CWM/Rom Manager? I forgot his name, he helped a lot over at the Atrix Forum when he released a compatible CWM for that phone. I don't mean to make it sound like harassing the guy, but maybe some of us can directly PM him and ask him nicely to help us with this phone. Just my input to speed up the possibility of making this phone even greater.
Koush, and he is working on CM9 for the NS.

If your waiting for LG to update ti to ICS and then for AT&T to put its bloat on it then I'd say you'll get ICS by aug, if you wait for the Devs you'll have ICS by the end of Jan

Unless they also have a sprint cdma sgs2
I'm very surprised by this, I was expecting Samsung to repeat their old ways and push updates out ~6 months or so after Europe updates hit OTA. I'm very glad I went with Sprint's SGSII because so far, I believe it's had the most official development support (out of the US varients). My cousin's SGSII who is on AT&T still has the soundpool bug. Ha!

We can only hope but my ballpark guess would be April for our ics "love"
Unless sprint does their "marketing technique" which could mean they will hold off on updating their older devices until the "new new" drops
That is the fear in the 3d forums but hey its all rumors till it hits a phone/device
My one concern is that Sprint will hold off any official ICS updates until they drop the galaxy nexus. They want to make a big splash with it being their first LTE phone & may want to be able to push that it has ICS as well.

Yup that may happen.. And is a fear... But by the end of march possibly April we will have a stable cm9/miui4/aokp... (there all really good right now with exceptions to the things people consider a "must" in a DD)

Could not agree more, only plus is official releases tend to lead to more stable 3rd party goodness
There is one thing though they have a good angle to sell new phones. There new phones will be lte not wimax. So they can upgrade these because there 3g blows and people will still get lte phones
Most likely this will be for the Interntional version, Since they had builds way before us meaning that they had more time to work on the interntional version than the CDMA version.
Plus its no "Middle man" in between the interntaional version.. aka a carrier having to approve the update before pushing it out.. its some carriers out there.. but their not as controling as ours..
With all these leaks not like your going to be running the stock ICS rom anyway. plus it will get leak before it even become a OTA as always. till then you have many leaks to play with

The source code that has to be released beside the official release is responsible for that. Not the build itself.

IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.

Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

By the time we even get Android 4.1, Android 4.2 will already be out in the market.
First, 4.2 will not be key lime pie.
Second, its not Samsungs fault, its the carriers.
And being the carriers fault - you have to wonder. Do they each only have like 2 people working on the Updates...or wtf. lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!

Well and doing carrier certification. I think that's more of what ends up taking a long time than updating any carrier add-on software.

this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...

Darn it! I thought it was JB since I read an article that US S3 was beeing updated over the OTA. Oh well..
chat with the ATT rep regarding JB rollout for ATT. This is the second reference I have gotten from a ATT rep that says the update may "affect the network" and that "if it does have an adverse affect it will not be released."
You are now chatting with 'Paul Goss'
Paul Goss: Thank you for completing the pre-chat survey. I will be happy to help you out with any of your issues today.
Paul Goss: Once it is made available to AT&T customer you will receive a text message letting you know.
RICHARD THOMAS: Just following up on a chat I had this AM. I understand you have nothing to do with the update but why can sprint roll out JB for the exact same device months earlier than ATT?
Paul Goss: Once the phone manufacturer releases the software we then test it over our network and once that is done we will then release for customers.
RICHARD THOMAS: by the release from sprint the software is or has been released by the manufacturer. The motorola Atrix fiasco has put a bad taste in my mouth. We were promised a update from motorola and ATT for almost a year and on the last day told we would not receive it. I just kind of get the feeling that ATT is going to do the same thing with this phone. I don't have much faith in ATT at the moment.
Paul Goss: Sorry you feel that way however before we can release we need to know how it will affect the network. Our network is much bigger and much more complex then Sprint there fore it requires more testing. if it does have an adverse affect then it will not be released.
RICHARD THOMAS: so we can expect to possibly NOT get a android Jelly Bean release?
Paul Goss: I have no knowledge or control over that. I can only say were in the process of testing it. The results are not given to us until it is released.
RICHARD THOMAS: you are the second tech that has told me that it might have an adverse effect on the network.
Paul Goss: Was there any other questions or concerns I can address today?
Paul Goss: Hopefully shortly we'll get notice that it is being released.
RICHARD THOMAS: no. Just a little disappointed in the amount of time that it is taking ATT to approve a software update on its customer's phones. Last anyone heard it wouldn't be until 2013
Paul Goss: Regretfully I can not comment on that as I have not been given that information.
Paul Goss: Once it is released you will be given notice.
RICHARD THOMAS: very well, thank you for chatting. please inform your supervisors that customers are getting irritated by the slow pace of updates. Not that anyone in corporate cares once they get our money.
Paul Goss: We do caret the last thing we want is for you to update the software and ending with a phone that does not work or work properly. I'm sure the last thing you want to do is go a week with out a phone while the company sends out a new one to replace the nonworking one.
RICHARD THOMAS: I agree just not convinced that is all.
RICHARD THOMAS: remember I had the motorola atrix that was abandoned half way through my contract.
RICHARD THOMAS: Thank you for taking the time to chat. I will not bother you further today.
Such a load of BS. This is obviously what they are instructed to tell people when they ask about updates to their phone. Guess what? People install custom ROMs on their phones and it doesn't "affect the network". Although at this point I wish it did and brought the network to its knees so AT&T corporate would actually get off their butts and do something.
I wouldn't sweat it. With sprint already releasing their version, we could see ours anyday now. I hope its by end of this weekend. Would make a nice surprise.

In the face of that point release, we think it's now likely that we'll see Android 5.0 shown in mid-2014. It a lot of babble but On 13 June 2013, VR-Zone also claimed that Android 5.0 will be optimized to run on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM.. We will see . I have doubts we will see ...

I don't know why everyone always insists that it takes a half a year for ours to get updated, when all the updates we received from 4.0.4 - 4.1.2 happened within a few months of each other. Often in only 2 months.
I'd imagine that Samsung is going to push to get everything updated before or at least right after Christmas. The main reason we are skipping to 4.3 is for compatibility with future devices such as their smartwatch. They'll sell a lot more for Christmas if they are already compatible with the S3!

If you think so Doc. I'm not getting my hopes up for it.

And you are probably wise not to. As the device gets older, it will take longer to get any updates. If I am right about the timeframe for this one, it'll likely be the last timely update we see.
If I'm wrong and we have to wait a year, then so be it. I don't plan to let it reduce my enjoyment of the device if that is true. Never understood why people get so worked up over an update! If they're not happy with it, there's always other options available.
My only real issue is with people claiming we are always last, or it always takes 6-9 months for an update, and then feeling like that gives them reason to complain about poor customer service. Personally, I'm fine with it if it does take a year. In the end, anything and everything you see written about it, including my last post, is pure speculation, nothing more. I keep getting asked about what I expect to see though, and while I don't usually like to predict anything, I figured I'd go ahead and post my thoughts on it. If I'm wrong, so be it, I'll just continue on through life with my poor outdated formerly "smart"phone! But I'll still be happy with it!

That's the thing, I'm not complaining, I just replied with a time frame when we would get the update, no need to get upset and go on a rant. I cant even remember the last time ive actually touchwiz on my s3 for more than a few minutes, I could actually care less when the S3 is updated. I'm happy as long as there's support for cm/aosp/aospa/aokp and hopefully Ubuntu touch in the near future, but I think we have a better chance of T-Mobile updating our poor outdated "smart" phone than getting a fully working port of Ubuntu touch.

Wasn't a rant. And it'll take a lot more than this thread to get me upset! Just covering all the bases because so many people keep asking me this. And any comments about people complaining were not directed at you or anyone in particular.

I would think around January or February we will get the update. But also am not getting my hopes up.
I thought of making a new thread but figured it made more sense to post here, question for anybody using one of the currently 4.3 roms. What are the common problems and issues with any of the existing 4.3's? Is there a 4.3 that is good enough to use as a daily driver? I haven't tried any myself yet mainly because I have tread enough yet to make an informed choice.

The 4.3 ROMs in the development sections are custom ROMs (cm, aosp, aospa, aokp...etc). This thread is covering the 4.3 update from Samsung which we do not have.
What may be a daily driver to others may not be a daily driver for you. Go through the 4.3 custom ROM threads and read a few pages to get an idea of what issues may or may not be present and flash the one that suits your needs.
If you don't want to flash a custom ROM, then your only option is to flash the 4.1.2 touchwiz ROMs available until T-Mobile releases the 4.3 update.

I would consider those to be in beta, sometimes alpha stages. If for no other reason than they sometimes have problems reading the nv data. Doesn't happen to everyone, but it happens enough. After flashing, baseband, serial number and imei (maybe more) all read unknown or zero. You have to either reboot several times or flash another Rom, to fix.
The nv data isn't lost, as is sometimes the case with the IMEI. As I understand it, the Rom just isn't reading it.
